New iOS update resulted in 6GB of "Other"

When I updated my iPhone software last week, suddenly my "Other" category jumped from virtually nothing to over 6GB (meaning, the yellow bar designated as "other", as opposed to the space taken up by Music, Photos...etc). Previously the "Other" category was just a sliver, maybe under 100 meg. I never really even paid attention. I have no idea what is taking up all the extra space and I had to delete a ton of my content. Any ideas?

I've synced my phone several times since the initial issue, trying to fix it. I assume that in doing so, I eliminated the option to restore from my most recent backup? Assuming I need to restore as a new device - dumb question, but will I lose all of my progress in games on my device (e.g. Angry Birds)? I know it's the least of my issues but am curious before I move forward. Thanks!
