New iPad makes time capsule internet slower

I currently have a time capsule as my internet router for an iPhone, iMac and MacBook Pro.  I also use the time capsule as a back up disk. I recently bought my husband an iPad 2 and have noticed that when he is using it in our house, the desktop and lap top internet speeds become REALLY slow.  When he goes somewhere with his iPad, the internet goes back to its normal fast speed.  I did a bit of reading and understand that the more devices you add to the network, the slower it becomes and that it is only as fast as the slowest device.  Also, I know that our time capsule is a dual band wireless network (2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz).  What can I do to speed up our internet again so that we can use both iPad and computers at the same time?

Your three devices connected to your TC means that you have no "unknown" devices using your WiFi network.
Speedtest should connect immediately through your browser.
Let's try working backwards to find a solution...
Apple computers / devices > WiFi Network > Time Capsule > ISP modem > physical connection to residence > ISP service.
Step One
Firstly - I make assumptions in my instructions - please let me know if you require further assistance with any of the suggested actions - rule of thumb - if you have spent more than two minutes trying to work out what I have written, then I have not written clearly or with enough detail, so please reply and ask me for clarification.
Assuming your iMac and MBP are working OK, let's try to determine whether there is a problem with your WiFi Network (the radios in your TC). Using an Ethernet cable, create a physical network connection from either your iMac or MBP to the TC. There are three Ethernet ports on the back panel of the TC - connect to any one of these. Next, disable the WiFi radio on the connected computer. The easiest method to complete this task is via the WiFi symbol in the top right corner of your computer screen - often this icon is located just to the left of the clock. Click on the WiFi symbol and select >Turn Wi-Fi Off. Now open your favourite browser software - for example Safari - and attempt to connect to the internet. You may as well attempt to load the www.speedtest.net page, and if possible run the test. Do not wait five minutes - if all is working as it should, this page should load in a few seconds and the test itself should take 10-20 seconds.
Do you have the same issue with speed? Please let me know the outcome of this test and we can progress further.

  • Why is Time Capsule Internet Slower than Belkin Router?

My Time Capsule is conneted via Ethernet to my Belkin Wireless router and is serving as my wireless backup drive.
I am extending the Time Capsule "network" via an AirPort Express in order to boost the signal over distance.
However I find consistently that when I log into the Time Capsule, my internet access is significantly slower than if I access it over the Belkin wireless router, whether I use the Airport Express or not.
I've also found that logging into the Belkin from my Mac to do my Time Capsule backups seem to run considerably faster and have fewer "stalls" than when going direct to the Time Capsule, which also seems quite strange.
Is there some reason for this? Something in my settings conflicting? One would assume that with the Mac going directly to the Time Capsule which is connected directly via Ethernet, that it would be faster than going through the 3rd party Belkin router, or at least no different.

Let me just get it clear..
    Belkin is main router..
TC is bridged and plugged into it by ethernet.
Express is doing extend wireless to the TC over 5ghz.
Now there is a couple of misunderstandings..
The Time Capsule is set for the 5GHz band ONLY to avoid conflict with the numerous 2.4GHz radios in close proximity, including the Belkin, automatic channel selection.
TC is not able to shut off the 2.4ghz.. even if you don't use it.. it will work.
So it is better to set it up and use it on fixed wireless channel out of the way. Indeed if it is some distance from the belkin rather than right next to it.. you can use roaming network setup. Both Belkin and TC use the same ssid ie wireless name.. same security ie WPA2 AES = WPA2 Personal. Same security password.
But different channel.. IMHO it is better to lock the wireless channel. Set TC to 11 and belkin to 1.
Wireless channel on 5ghz is less of an issue but I recommend lower end channels.. ie <40.
Extending wireless on 5ghz is often poor.. the range is actually bad.. and link speed can be worse than using 2.4ghz.. so I would carefully test the speed using wireless on 2.4ghz and then on 5ghz. .If possible only use 5ghz on single hop up close to the TC.
Any wireless that does double hop.. ie TC--Express--computer will go at half the speed of TC--computer, if they link at the same speed. This is caused by double hop wireless being highly inefficient way to extend wireless.
If the TC is faster by ethernet via the Belkin than via the TC I would find that difficult to follow and you will need to give me exact model number of the belkin.
That the belkin 2.4ghz wireless is faster than the TC is no surprise.. apple limit wireless to N lite at 2.4ghz.. whereas the belkin is probably 300mbit. And better signal.
You have heaps of testing to do.

  • TS1398 My new iPad keeps forgetting my Internet password every time it is switched off or goes on flight mode

My new iPad keeps forgetting my Internet password every time it is switched off or goes on flight mode. Have tried resetting the network setting as it suggest on the support page. The Internet  works fine with my windows PC and my son's iPad 2. Any advice?

Have you tried powering off and then back on your router?
Does it only happen with your router? If so that would tend to indicate a router problem.

When you setup the wireless and ethernet in the computer.. ipv6 will be on automatic.. this is wrong for the latest TC firmware and airport utility. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
Go to the wireless and ethernet setup in preferences and change ipv6 to link local.
Once you do the big backup by ethernet the wireless will function fine for incremental.. it is obviously not estimating the size correctly..
A full back-up on the iMac would be about 650 GB.  The partial updates that I have been trying start out at 115MB and keep growing indefinitely.  The original back-up never finished nor have any of the follow-up attempts.
The first estimate should be the full backup but it will keep growing as the backup advances.. I would also delete any inprogress files to make sure it is not messing up .. delete even a sparsebundle if there is one for the imac on the TC and start afresh once you have ethernet connection.
    See A10 here.
Pondini may have some other clues there to give you an idea of why the backup is slow or not finishing.. there is a lot of issues with TM when it decides not to work.

  • Time capsule painfully slow wifi

New time capsule , painfully slow wifi , cisco works lightning fast so the issue is with the TC. Looked at forums and I see it's a common isssue. Any ideas that actually work?

Download the free  iStumbler  app to examine the strength of your connection.
If it's not good, look for interference with another wireless device, cordless phone, microwave oven, etc.  Turn them off temporarily;  if you find an offender, move it farther away.  See  AirPort and Bluetooth: Potential sources of wireless interference  for more.
    Try different WIFI channels.

  • New dual-band time capsule but computers only access 2.4ghz channel

Just set up a new dual-band Time Capsule (bought it prior to the latest release though). Everything is working so far - Time Machine, wireless internet - but I noticed that both computers in the apartment (2 Macbook Pros - one running 10.5.6, the other 10.6.1) are only accessing the wireless network on Channel 2 (2.4Ghz). And on the laptop running Snow Leopard, I'm only seeing transmit rates of between 50-100. On the Leopard laptop I see up to 130. Doesn't this suggest that the computers are only using the "b/g" band and not the "n" band? When I option-click on the airport menu icon on the SL laptop it does say PHY mode is 802.11n, but I have no idea what PHY mode means frankly.
I feel as though the laptops should be connecting on a much higher channel and seeing much higher transmit rates (closer to 300?), but I'm not at all well-versed in these wireless realms. Any help would be much appreciated...
    thanks
    Tom

    Welcome to the discussions, Thomas!
+"And on the laptop running Snow Leopard, I'm only seeing transmit rates of between 50-100. On the Leopard laptop I see up to 130. Doesn't this suggest that the computers are only using the "b/g" band and not the "n" band?"+
If you were receiving "g" rates, the number would be 54 or less depending on the distance from the router to the computer, so you are seeing some "n" speeds from the 2.4 GHz network. I believe the default setting for this "guest" band is 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible).
Would suggest that you contact Apple as a number of users have reported that either the main network or guest network is not functioning correctly.
The default setting on the main network is 802.11n at 5 GHz, so if you have a good connection and are relatively close to the router, you should see speeds in the 200-270 range.
Many users assume that 5 GHz is a stronger signal, but the facts are that 5 GHz signals are absorbed by walls and obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals, so depending on your home construction, distance from router, etc., the 5 GHz signal may not be strong enough. Your computers will connect to the strongest signal. If that's the 2.4 GHz band, that's where they will connect.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Airport unable to find brand new, never-used Time Capsule

I'd appreciate any help with this problem, as Apple doesn't seem to offer support for this product yet. I followed all the instructions to set up my new, 500 GB Time Capsule, but the Airport utility refuses to detect it. I can't see a way around this impasse--there are no buttons to click or anything like that, and the only troubleshooting suggestion that comes up is to make sure that the Time Capsule is plugged in (it is). The thing is obviously useless if my computer (MacBook Pro, purchased less than a year ago, running OS X 10.5.5) won't detect it. Again, very frustrating. Any help welcome.

    Matthew,
If you have not yet resolved your issue, here are some tips that have helped others.
*_Time Capsule Has Disappeared From Airport Utility / Amber Light_*
*Reboot ISPs’ Modem & Time Capsule*
If you are using the Time Capsule as your only router then power down your ISPs modem.
Unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
    Wait 10-15 seconds.
Next turn your modem back on first. Let it initialize and acquire an IP address (about 30-60 seconds).
    Re-plug in the TC again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), does it show up in Airport Utilities?
If not try "Rescan" from the File Menu.
If the above doesn't work, then…
    *Cycle Airport Preferences*
    Open Network Preferences.
Click “Turn Airport Off”, wait 10 seconds.
Now click “Turn Airport On”. Close Prefs.
Does it now show up in Airport Utilities?.
If not go to the “File” menu and select “Rescan”.
    Does it appears now?.
If not, unplug the TC, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
Does the TC show up now in Airport Utility?
If the above doesn't work, then…
    *Hard Reset*
Take a look at this KB article. It will explain how to reset the TC:
Make sure you hold in the reset button for at least a good 10 seconds.
Then you should be able to see it. Now follow this KB article to set it up again:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1178
Let us know if any of the above resolved your issue.
    Cheers!

  • New AirPort Extreme time capsule to replace current AEBS

Is there a simple way to do this. I want to replace an old  AEBS with a new AirPort Extreme time capsule. Do I have to create a new network? I'm not really extending the network, I'm just replacing the base station. If I use the exact name of my old wireless network and the exact password, will all devices abe ble to automatically connect to the new base station? Should I expect any trouble connecting to the pre-existing modem that the other base station was connected to? I'm hoping to avoid calls to the ISP and/or Apple and many hours of lost Internet time. Thanks

I am a first time user of the new airport extreme time capsule 2TB. I use a macbook pro and imac. I installed the router today and got on wirelessly. The worked fine on my current set up OS Mounitain Lion 10.8.4.  Apple tells me it is the printer mfr issue and printer companies tell me it is apple issue. Any help appreciated.

    Arguably, they're both right.
Changing your router changes everything, so your best course of action is to research the respective printer's documentation and determine how to reset them to factory default condition. Then, add them again using System Preferences > Print & Scan.
For that, I recommend you first "reset the printing system" according to these instructions: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system. Its instructions for Lion are identical to those for Mountain Lion.
As the article states, it will remove all your existing printers, leaving the Mac's printing system in a similar "factory default" condition ready for you to create a new print queue for each printer, which you should probably do.
Apple's printing support documents contain a great deal of redundancy, but this one may be a good place to start: OS X Mountain Lion: Set up a printer to print wirelessly

I have to restart ipad each time for internet access and some games.  Never happened until about 2 weeks ago.  ?

Firefox is a browser: it doesn't require you to 'sign in'.
It sounds to me like you have some kind of malware installed if you're required to 'sign in' every time you use it.
I'd recommend you use Internet Explorer (''assuming that doesn't require you to 'sign in' too'') to go to http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and download the free version. It will quarantine any malware it finds so restart Firefox afterwards to see whether the problem recurs or not.

  • New Time Capsule incredibly slow internet.

I just purcahsed a new iMac 27 inch along with an Airport Time Capsule.  I connected the Airport Time Capsule without difficulty.  Once connected the internet access deregraded significantly not only for the iMac but other wireless devices in my house as well.  I disconnected the Airport TIme Capsule and reconected my Cisco router and all devices work well.  The iMac also worked when I bypassed the Airport Time Capsule and connected directly from the DSL modem to the iMac. Clearly the Airport Time Capsule creates an internet connection problem. For what I paid for these products this should not happen. What is the connection bottle neck caused by the Airport Time Capsule?
    Thank you,

Can you try bridging the dsl modem and running pppoe client on the TC.. that could work better.
To confirm that the Airport TC was the problem I connected an Ethernet cable directly fromm the DSL modem to the iMac.  Worked fine and fast as ever without the TC in the circuit.  However, I cannot establish a PPPoE with the TC in the circuit.
When you plugged the iMac into the Modem.. what IP do you get on the computer? Are you using the PPPoE client in the Mac?
Just go to the network preference and check what the ethernet is.. you can do a screenshot.. as it is unlikely to be your public IP unless you are running pppoe client on the Mac.
If the Mac gets standard private IP.. eg 192.168.x.x then the modem is also a router.
That means when you place the TC into the network.. it has to be set to bridge mode.
To get the TC as the main router you need to bridge the modem and then use the pppoe client in the TC.
Try a file copy to the TC.. what speed do you get?
I do not understand the instruction.
I am trying to confirm where the issue is..
Mount the TC hard disk in finder. Select a single large file in the Mac and copy it to the TC. The file should be around 1GB .. you can use a bunch of large files if you must but a single large file is better.
Open the activity monitor and check the network speed whilst the copy is taking place.. you should get 50MB/s transfer speed. If so that proves there is nothing wrong on the LAN side. The issue is totally WAN related. If it is slow.. less than 10MB/s then you have issues also on LAN or even mainly on LAN side and we can progress from there.
For the moment.. leave the WRT610N connected to the modem..
Plug the TC into the WRT610 in bridge mode.
Set wireless in the TC off.
Plug by ethernet into the TC.. how is the Internet speed?
This will help establish if the WAN port is faulty or has issues.
Note carefully when you test by ethernet.. please turn off the wireless in the imac.. just click the wifi icon and turn it off.. to ensure all connections are made via ethernet and not via wireless. It can get messy when you have both wireless and ethernet turned on.

  • Setting up internet for ipad w/time capsule, but don't have internet to download airport app.  Now what

Hi all -  Set up my time capsule and got the wi-fi working for my computer.  Now trying to set up internet on my new ipad and have seen that I need to download the airport app onto my ipad.  Problem is -- I don't have internet for my ipad so I can't download the app.  Advice?  (Other than . . . go somewhere w/internet)?  Thanks!

You do not need the app. The TC can be setup and is setup from what you have stated.. the ipad should get internet as soon as it connects.
If you have issues.. please try the following.. setting it up from your computer.
Use SMB compatible name for wireless ie short no spaces. .pure alphanumeric.
Use fixed radio channels.. as the ipad seems to not like auto rotating channels.. fix 2.4ghz to channel 1, 6, 11 in turn.. pick the one that works best.
