New iPad restore from old ipod backup - Apps not transferring

Am trying to set up new iPad Air (on iOS 7) for son. He has an old iPod Touch running 6.1.5. I backed it up yesterday. I wanted to bring all data from that over to the new iPad. I obviously want this to happen so he will be able to pick up playing his games where he left off and not have to start all over again. So, have followed steps to restore from backup. But not one single app will transfer across.
I've tried twice, reset to factory the 2nd time and tried again but still not one app appears. I get a message saying
Settings and data from some apps are not compatible with iPad and will not be restored.
but I can't believe that not one single app is compatible, he has loads of games on his old iPod!
Can anyone help me - need to get this sorted before the big day tomorrow!
Thanks

Kind of answering my own question here.... have just done a ton more research, and tucked away in a tutorial on how to do the transfer, I found someone had the same problem as me. This was his answer

So after much time with apple support….  You need to “transfer purchases” to your computer via iTunes before making the backup.  And the iPads need different names or it may automatically back itself up, and that may end up being what you restore from (which of course would end up doing nothing).
In my case it seemed to be just transferring purchases from old iPod to iTunes see how to do it here
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848http://
Go to 2nd para to transfer from device to iTunes.
Hope that will help someone frantically trying to do it before Christmas.
TIP do it soon as it is taking ages for the 83 apps he has to copy across...

  • Is it possible for the software to be too new to restore from old iPod's backup?

So I tried to restore my new iPod from my old iPod's backup, but the old one was working on iOS 5.1 and the new one was an older software.
It said it could not restore the new one from the backup of the old one because the software was too old, but the only option is to update it to iOS 5.1.1.. will it still say it is not compatible now because the new one is too new and the old one is too old? :/

If you update your iPod to iOS 5.1.1, you'll be able to restore the iPod to a backup from any iPod with current or older software.
To put it simpler, you can update your new iPod to the latest iOS and restore your old iPod's data.

  • I just recently upgraded from a 4S to a 5C.  I backloaded the 5 from Itunes and now everytime i plug into itunes, it asks if I want to set up as new or restore from a previous backup.  Why is it doing this.  I did it twice yesterday.....

I just recently upgraded from a 4S to a 5C.  I backloaded the 5 from Itunes and now everytime i plug into itunes, it asks if I want to set up as new or restore from a previous backup.  Why is it doing this.  I did it twice yesterday.....  In addtion, those are the only options I have.  I cannot do anything else unless I choose one of the two.  Zero options.  Phone works fine though.

I figure that either of those options will result in losing all SMS and data created since the last backup. Not a major loss, but ** annoying when nothing has changed and the time it will take to restore.
When was the last time you synced your iPhone with iTunes since the backup is updated as the first step during the sync process?
Is there anyway to recover this WITHOUT having to do a full restore or set up as new?
    In a word, no.
If I do restore or set up as new, how do I know it's not going to do the same thing tomorrow (like a few other forums threads I've read indicate might happen)?
There is no way to know for certain but I've never experienced the same in the first place. I venture to say having to do this is the exception rather than the rule.

  • New iPhone restore from old backup and lost new photos

    Hi there
I recently got a iphone 5 and from the excitement of seeing Obama in cape town, took pictures of his speech and even recorded my friends shaking his hand and have brief converstaions. Now when i connected the new phone into my mac, itunes requested a restore from old backup. So agreed, not knowing that all the new photos / movies of the US president would be deleted!!!
Can i reftieve them or not. and why doenst Apple provide such informaition to users for new restorations?
    Please help!

Same problem.  My wife lost her iPhone 3Gs while on vacation.  Purchased iPhone 5 on the trip and took pictures with it.  When we got back home I clicked restore from a previous backup and all the pictures disappeared.
I wonder if Apple is reading this thread. ?????????
NO... What did you expect the phone to do when you restore from a backup.
You should've imported the new pics to your computer as you would a digital camera..

  • HT1386 I accidentally synced my new iPad with an old iPod Touch Device, can I undo that? How?

I just got my iPad a half hour ago and by mistake instead of listing it as a new iPad I clicked sync with an old ipod touch. What do I do?!!?

If you want to start all over again - erase it - if that is what you are asking. Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings.
If you have a backup of another iPad, restore from that backup and sync again with iTunes. Connect the iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, right click on the iPad name on the left side under devices and select - Restore from backup. Select the iPad backup from the pop up window and then sync with iTunes after the iPad finishes restoring,

  • Can i restore from itunes ipod backup to itunes

I had (emphasis on had) an iPod 160GB that I lost or was stolen not sure but can't find it. I have it backed up within iTunes. My iTunes library was stored on an external hard drive which failed. I want to know if there is any way to restore from the iTunes backup folder on my primary drive (C:Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup) to a new external hard drive so I can rebuild my music library from that backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Media is not  included in iDevice backups.
Use the backup of the computer to put everything back.

I am trying to restore a new ipod touch gen. 4 from a backup of my old ipod touch gen. 4  They are the exact same ipod (the first one got crushed).  After completing the restore process, the computer recognizes the ipod but then immediately asks me to "set up your ipod" and wants me to either set it up as a new component or restore AGAIN.  It will not get passed this step.  I can not sync, etc.  HELP!!!!!

Connect to iTunes, Control-click on the iPhone icon in left frame of iTunes and select "Restore from Backup."

  • How to restore new ipad air from old ipad backup using itunes.

I'm trying to get all of the content from an old iPad onto new iPad air. I backed up the old iPad on iTunes, and when I plug in the new iPad air, it prompted that I must first update the software in order to back it up. I updated the software, but now I'm not sure how to get the old iPad backup onto the new iPad because it isn't seeing the new iPad as brand new anymore. How to I transfer the old stuff onto the new one after updating the software? I'm using iTunes for Windows.

    Hey jh232808,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to restore a backup to a new iOS device. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
    Restore using iTunes
Use these steps if you have a new iOS device, or you need to to restore after a factory reset:
Connect your device to the computer that has your backup.
Install the latest version of iTunes.
Choose File > Devices > Restore from Back up.
You won't be able to install a backup that uses a later version of iOS than the device you're trying to install it on. Find out why.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,

  • New iPhone restored from old backup off iTunes but keeps telling me to "connect to itunes" after it's done.

    Hello-
I just upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone5s.  I was trying to set up my new iPhone.  I connected it to my Mac and iTunes and chose "restore backup from old phone".  It's now finished syncing but my iPhone keeps on telling me to "connect to itunes".  It's as if my new iPhone is not recognizing that restoring is done.  What do I need to do?
    Thanks for your help.

if the iPhone goes through the cycle again every time it is re-connected to your Mac, there is a problem with the old backup or with the new iPhone.
Try restoring the new iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup. If no problem after this, bingo.

  • New itunes wont restore new iphone 5 from old phones backup

My new iphone 5 refuses to restore from a backup of my old 4S using i tunes (latest version).
It recognises it as a new phone, asks where to restore from,
It starts the restore then freezes indicating 1 minute left,
this then turns into 2 minutes, 3 minutes 4,5,6, and on and on
I have about 20G of music on the old phone and i cloud will only accept 5Gig
    Any advice
    Thanks in advance

You're welcome.  If your phone is not showing under Devices on the left side of iTunes after connecting it, see the troubleshooting steps here:

  • Can I set up a new iPhone using an old iPod backup?

The support articles cover backing up and then restoring from backup but only on like devices. I just got my first iPhone and I need to set it up with my old iPod data. iTunes didn't cue me when I plugged it in and just set up the phone as a new phone. I just want to make sure I don't render the phone useless or something if I restore it from iPod data. If I have to re-enter everything manually I might cry.

I'm going to answer my own question in case someone else needs it.
I synced my iPod. Then, I wiped my iPhone and restored it to factory settings. Since I've only had it 36 hours, there wasn't much to lose. When it came back up, iTunes asked me which backup to use (which it didn't the first time, I still don't know why). I selected the one for the iPod. Everything seems to work. It installed everything, apps, as well as app data, but left everything unique to the phone alone. My biggest fear was bricking the phone if I installed iPod data over it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I still have a new, functional phone but now it has the treasure trove of data that's been in my critical device for the past four years.

  • New iPad restore from iCloud is stuck

I'm just posting this to hopefully save someone some grief. When restoring my new iPad from iCloud everything was going smoothly up to the point where the apps start to download again. They got stuck.
I found several articles on the internet with tips on how to get the apps moving again. All the tips worked somewhat, in the sense that I was able to force some of my apps to go ahead and finish downloading. Others remained stuck.
I finally gave up and went to sleep, and was going to tackle the whole thing again in the morning.
To my surprise, the iPad took care of itself overnight, and everything was restored and waiting for me when I woke up.
If this happens to you, try patience first.

ID start over.  Clearly there is something wrong.

  • Restored from Time Machine backup-Apps hang/crash

I do apologize as I saw there is a similar thread to my problem but I wanted to post mine as it is a little different:
I am still troubleshooting this but I would appreciate any suggestions as well. Last night, my 24" C2D imac became unresponsive and had to had a force shut down. When I rebooted, I got the white apple screen for approx 10 mins.
I then booted from the Snow Leopard CD and did a complete restore from my Time machine Backup. The computer did come back but when I tried to open most programs (Safari, Mail, Itunes, iPhoto) they all unexpectedly crashed. When I looked at the crash log it mentioned something about a java webkit being missing?
Finally I got firefox to open. But the computer would hang every 10 seconds and have a spinning beach ball. It would hang for 10-30 seconds then it would just continue that cycle.
I restarted from the CD again, ran Disk Utility and repaired permissions. I tried running from my hard drive and still had the freezing/hanging issue. I then restored my HD from another TM backup (different time). But still had the same issue
I downloaded the combo update 10.6.2 on another machine, tried reinstalling that to no avail.
I currently am restoring yet ANOTHER TM backup from yesterday morning (since I know that was a good boot).
I dont think it is a hard drive issue because I do have a bootcamp partition, and can boot into that with no problems/issues.
I wanted to ask if there were any ideas of what this could be or anything else I could try? I was thinking about redownloading the java updater and seeing if that helped...
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. My other question is if I do a clean install of SL, how do I then migrate information over (mail, pictures, music, etc.) from my TM backups?

if the restore you are doing now produces the same behavior just reinstall SL on top of it. your TM backups could be corrupt and missing some vital system parts. there have been a number of similar reports by people doing a full system restore from TM in snow leopard. so if the next restore doesn't work boot from the SL dvd and reinstall SL. it will keep your current data but give you a fresh system.
