New iPad, side switch failure?

About 1-2 days ago, I started having problem with the side switch, I am no longer able to unmute or unlock rotation by using side switch.
If I choose side switch to Mute, no matter how I toggle switch button, it stays at Mute status, no system sound, no lock sound, no keyboard sound, no notification sound, no game sound... but Video/Music/YouTube are OK.
If I choose side switch to Rotation Lock, no matter how I toggle switch button, the "Rotation Lock" icon always appears in status bar.
Usually when you toggle side switch button, the screen will show a big icon to tell it is now muted/unmuted, or rotation locked/unlocked, but now the big icon does not appear any more.
Looks like my iPad sets side switch's default as Mute & Rotation Lock, and does NOT allow to change from the hardware button.
I tried reboot, reset all settings, restore as a new iPad, nothing worked.
Does that look like a hardware failure?

If it's still an issue after a restore, then it most likely is a hardware problem which you can't fix yourself.
Replacements can be refurbished, but you won't be able to tell the difference. If it's not 'as new' they'll replcae it again for you! Even so, if you ask nicely, they may offer you a new one!
Restoring from a backup does take a long time, and I fully understand that the drive to the store is a long way, but there's really not much else you can do. Make it a day out, go shopping while you're there, find a restaurant for some lunch, and then that 1 1/2 hour journey won't seem to pointless!

    I just purchased the New Ipad yesterday, and it looks like I will have to go through the trouble of getting another one.  I have done EVERYTHING.  I have contacted support and reconfigured the entire system, and the problem remains.  When I try to get an app, the language for the app store, game center, etc. changes to german (some things are still english, and some german...seems random), and there is no way to switch it back without hooking the device to my computer and pretty much wiping out the entire system and starting fresh (a good 2 hour process), just to have it happen AGAIN.  This Ipad was purchased for my speech-impaired father, and we got the Ipad for it's "easy" configuration and app selection (for assistive speech apps).  That is the only reason we got it, and we can't even use it for that one reason.  On top of this, the apps will not even download (though that could be because all the confirmation boxes suddenly switch to a language I cannot read).  This is ridiculous.  This is the first apple product we have purchased, and we are far from impressed.  I really want to smash it because it is worthless.    Is anyone else having this kind of problem?  I know I am a new apple user, but I am not stupid...even the technical person from apple support told me if the reconfiguration didn't work I'd have to get a new one.  What a hassle!

    Try this again  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.     Use the new ID on her iPod but only for:
    Settings>Messages>Send and Receive
    Settings>FaceTime
    Settings>GameCenter

    Continue to use the same/common Apple ID for Settings>iTunes and App stores so you can share purchases.

    Potential Problem:
    Upon initiating the New iPad's Verizon Hotspot, other devices initially see the iPad's SSID, then you receive an "Unable to join..." message and/or the SSID disappears, never to be seen by devices that you are attempting to connect to the iPad.
    Apparent Cause:
    The characters used to name your iPad are the default, unchangeable characters used to name your iPad's Verizon Hotspot's SSID (the network name).
    You cannot change the SSID, unless you change the name of your iPad.
    Apparently, when it comes to naming the SSID, certain characters, maybe including spaces, are not allowed and subsequently corrupt any connection.
    In my case, my iPad's name, and therefore it's SSID had a space and an apostrophe in it, one or both of which (probably the apostrophe), would not allow proper broadcasting of the SSID and the connection to the hotspot.
    Preliminary Solution:
    ename your iPad using alphanumeric characters without spaces or special characters; stick with letters and numbers.
    To rename your iPad, connect it to iTunes, and before doing anything, allow it to sync.
    Then, with the iPad's name showing in the left-hand column of iTunes, double click it's name, which will allow you to rename the iPad.
    Reboot the iPad, and hopefully, the hotspot SSID, which is your iPad's new name, will reappear among the visible networks on your other wireless devices.
    Apple Tech Support should verify this problem/solution, then provide guidance as to allowable naming conventions that won't trip up the hotspot.

    After I get the "unable to join" message on my laptop, I turn off, then back on the Person Hotspot and then the second attempt to join from my laptop works...
    I did rename my ipad, however i didn't use special characters or spaces...   maybe just renaming is causing problems?
    It's stupid that you can't use your own sid!
    I really hate these crazy issues.    Why can't it just work!

  • IPad Mini Side-Switch Lock Always-Active Bug

    Hi,
    I have an iPad mini that behaved perfectly until around the time I upgraded to 7.0.6, when it starting making me choose between Mute or Landscape mode.
    If my iPad side switch is set to control the Mute option in settings, when I try to play audio the iPad is always silent. If I use the volume rocker the indicator shows the volume changeable from minimum to maximum, but no sound occurs when playing audio of any kind.
    I can swap the side switch lock between active and disabled, and the mute indicator comes and goes, but still no audio in either side switch state.
    If I set the side switch in Settings to control the Lock Rotation instead and restart the iPad, I don't have any problems with audio, but my iPad mini becomes locked in landscape mode.
    If I swap the side switch lock between active and disabled, the locked and unlocked orientation icons appear, but the screen stays locked in landscape.
    I don't want to reset the iPad as I have apps on there that are since discontinued, so are there any other options/fixes available? Or Is anyone else experiencing this bug?

    I didn't say a restore, which reloads a fresh copy of iOS. I said a reset which does not remove any data or apps. It's equivalent to power cycling your iPad - a reboot.
    That said, you should always download copies of your apps to a computer and keep them for just the situation you described.

    I have six 'wireless clients' on my AirPort Extreme.  The first five are identified by name, i.e. GJ's iphone, GJ's Mac Mini, etc.  However, my new iPad does not show a name but just the IP Address of 10.0.1.5.   My new iPad does have a name but for some reason does not show up.  What should I try.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)

I have tried the mystical swiping upward on the screen with 4 fingers to get some special sound menu (which I never succeeded in getting).  My headphone jack doesn't work all the time either so some times my kids can hear their games and sometimes they can't.  I am super frustrated at this point.  So any suggestions would be great.  Am I missing something basic or do we just have a soundless iPad now?

  • Broken lock switch on new iPad air

    Has anyone else experienced problems with the lock switch that controls the landscape and portrait orientation on the iPad air?  Bought 128 gig. New iPad air and the switch broke after a few days.  To make it worse I took it to the Genius Bar and they verified it was broken and have been waiting two days for a replacement.  My husband bought one too and his has been fine.  Based on the price, I'm a little frustrated with the quality issue but maybe it is an isolated case.

    I don't see many complaints here or online so probably isolated. Besides, it sounds like the issue is already resolved since they are giving you a new iPad.

    The software switch is in the task bar at the bottom. Double tap the home button and swipe to the right in the bottom of the screen. The speaker icon on the left would be where the software switch would be.
    If you don't see a lock icon in the upper right corner, the screen isn't locked, reboot your iPad.

    Have you tried to force quit the app? Double tap the home button. Scroll sideways if needed to see the icon and preview for the camera app. Flip that app up and off the screen to close it then single tap on the home screen preview or single tap the home button to exit the mode.
    Try your camera app again and see if you can switch modes.
    When you switch modes, you do have to drag the words, not just tap on the video word, if that makes any sense. When you try to go from video to photo, do you try to drag the photo word to the front?

    That setting only works for system sounds like push notifications (emails and the like), some game sounds, keyboard clicks and things like that. If you want to mute all sounds you still have to turn the volume all the way down with the volume switch.
