although I have a library of photos stored on an external hard drive.
Check the formatting of this external drive. Probably the file system is not supported for iPhoto libraries. An iphoto library needs to be on a drive formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).
See: iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
If your external drive has a different file system, move he library to a correctly formatted drive.
I clicked "import" and it imported everything excpt that library (including videos/PDFs) but not my old library.
Never import an iPhoto library. That will create a mess of duplicate photos with poor resolution - faces, thumbnails, previews.
Open iPhoto libraries by double clicking the library.
Which iPhoto version have you been running? If you upgraded from iPhoto 7.1.2 or earlier, you need to prepare the library for upgrading, before you can open it in iPhoto 9.6,  see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader

    No.
I know the previous install is at least 7.0, but I have no idea about which point release.
Try checking the content of the iTunes Music Library.xml file.
Finally, what's the expected behaviour (or required procedure) with respect to reauthorization of this computer to use the same ITMS-purchased files?

  • Relocated iPhoto to external hard drive - now need to delete old library.

I have relocated my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I did this due to space issues on my internal hard drive. Now I need to delete my iPhoto library on my internal hard drive to give me more memory. What is the best, easiest, and safest way to delete? Thank you so much!

    Before you delete anything:
1.) Make sure the drive you put your library on is Mac OS formatted. Click on the drive icon and go to File > Get Info and check the "Format". If it isn't Mac formatted, reformat the drive and re-copy the library over.
2.) Tell iPhoto to look at your library on the external drive to make sure it has all the pictures you want. Hold down option key and launch iPhoto and choose the library on the external drive to see within it.
3.) Do you have a backup? I have my library on an external drive like you do. I have another external drive that backs up my computer and the drive with the library on it. External drives are relatively inexpensive (You can also backup using DVDs although if you have a large library it might take quite a few disks.)
__You will see it said over and over here on the discussion boards. If you have information that is important to you, have a backup.

    To Delete your library:
In the Dock (long strip of icons at the bottom of the computer screen) click on the Finder icon.
Look in the sidebar on the left hand side of the resulting window. You will see the Home.
__Inside the Home go to the folder called "Pictures". Drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures folder to the trash and empty the trash.
    Hope that helps.

  • Deleting old library folder?

    Hi there!
I recently updated to Lion, and I found out that some people couldn't see their library folder after upgrading, but I could see mine.
I tried that method with option-clicking on the 'Go'-tab, and I got into a new library folder. The content in the two folders aren't completely the same, but some things are. So my question is:
Can I delete the olde library folder from Snow Leopard?

  • Can't upload new songs into old library?

I had another itunes account under another email... I moved... I misplaced my ipod & went on with my life.
I found my ipod. I created a new acct with my new email & bought a bunch of songs. Now there's some foolishness that I can't have 2 libraries & so I can't get my new songs on the ipod with my old stuff. There are threats of deleting the old library for the new & I can't have that!
Any suggestions appreciated before I put my ipod back in a drawer. Please feel free to point me to another thread or a section in a manual. I've given up trying to find the answer myself as I am old, cranky & up way after my bed time.
    Thanks

    Welcome to AD!
There are a few ways to approach this.
First off, authorize your PC under the old account. If you have forgotten the details, use these directions to recover your old account info.
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/password/
You might need to contact iTS support if you can't get to the old email.
Once you get the PC authorized with the old account, you should be able to use the "Transfer Purchases" feature - and not erase anything.

  • Syncing with a new computer after deleting old library

This is SO frustrating! Only a few days into my iphone 3g and im running into problems. All right, so I got a new computer cause my ancient one had a virus. (note: I deleted itunes off my old computer) I redownloaded itunes got some songs and went to sync. Heres the message im getting "This iphone is synced with another library. Do you want to delete this iphone and sync with this library" Please HELP!! If I proceed will I be deleting everything on my iphone????
    Thanks in advance. :I

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with a single computer only.
If you proceed with syncing iTunes content with iTunes on another computer, you won't be deleting everything on your iPhone but you will be deleting all iTunes content that is currently available on your iPhone that was transferred to your iPhone from your ancient computer with a virus. Aren't there a number of antivirus programs available for a Windows PC?
Deleting the iTunes application from your computer does not delete your iTunes library. Your iTunes library is stored in the iTunes folder located in your My Music folder. Maintaining a backup of all important data on your computer including for your iTunes library stored on an external drive or some other media used for backup purposes only is important regardless the platform, but even more so with a Windows PC due to constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.
iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased/acquired from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for content that was purchased/acquired from the iTunes Store only.
With your iPhone connected to the new computer and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.

  • Brand new Ipod touch old library

So I got a new ipod touch and a new macbook. I was able to import my itunes library for my old ipod to the new macbook easily. Now, how do I get my library onto the new ipod touch? If I just plug it in will it sync? I kept the account info the same and authorized the new computer on the account. Can I have two ipods using the same itunes library? TIA

*Can I have two ipods using the same itunes library?*
Yes you can, at the moment I use three different model iPods with the same library. Just connect your new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions to register and name it. It will connect to iTunes and prompt you to automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like. You can leave it at manual update or choose to sync music - selected playlists: How to use multiple iPods with one computer</a

  • Problem deleting old library structure

I switched from Aperture 1.0 to Adobe Bridge. I found it much easier to work with, particularly organizing my workflow. After reading the great reviews of Aperture 2.0 I purchased the upgrade and switched back. I downloaded the upgrade and am now on 2.1. My problem is when I try to import photos, Aperture is still seeing the folder structure in Finder from a year ago which is totally different than my current folders. Of course since the photos are no longer there I get an error message. How do I get Aperture to recognize my current folders? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I went through the tutorials, but could not find anything that helped.
    Thank you.

When you Import folders into a project, you can't choose individual images but just the folder that contains the images. Sub Folders come along and become albums or subfolders depending on if they contain other folders. It should import the file structure on your hard drive not an old file structure from Aperture.
AppZapper will wipe all remnants of an Application from your computer but not the files. Just download the trial and drag the application on top of it.
    Manually:
Move these files to the trash, but don't empty it yet.
    The Application itself
Root (not User)>> Library>> Application Support >> ProApps>> Aperture System ID
    User>> Library>> Preferences >> com.apple.Aperture.plist
    User>> Library>> Application Support >> Aperture
Then reinstall. You'll be asked to enter your serial number. On an Upgrade version, it may ask for the Aperture 1.0 serial number as well so have it handy,

  • Create New User--delete old user-- Lose applications? (giving iMac away)

I want to give my iMac to a friend. I want to just create a new user for him, then delete me to erase my info and files.. If I do that will my bootcamp and Windows, and iLife, and applications all remain for him? I hope so!
I can erase my mobile me, mail, and itunes account. Basically like a pseudo "wipe clean". Any suggestions?
I would rather not re-install. It would be nice for him to have it up and running already.
    Thanks

After you delete your personal files, you can use Disk Utility to 'Erase Free Space'. When you trash files in OS X and empty the trash, the files are no longer accessible (and they become free space that may be reused) but they are still on your hard drive and could be recovered by someone with the necessary software. By doing +Erase Free Space,+ OS X will write 0's over all free space, eliminating the ability to recover the deleted files. Read the Help topics in Disk Utility for more info.
For the extra paranoid, you can specify doing this 7x or even 35x when you erase free space in Disk Utility.
There is no need to completely wipe out the drive & reinstall. Even if you did a complete reinstall, if you don't do a secure erase first those data files may actually still be recoverable because the free space they occupied previously likely won't get reused during the installation.

I was deleting some of my pictures in the picture file where i store photos before i email them. However, I decided to "delete all".

I also recently purchased a video from itunes that will not add to my ipod when I drag it, also saying that i am not authorized. A majority of the songs transfered, but what is with the others not working?

  • New iPhoto not working at all - blank library on startup

I just upgraded my iLife package to 09 and must admit that I've never experienced this much trouble in my 15 years as an apple.
First of all: Upon upgrading and first launch of iPhoto I was met by a complete blank library. I quickly checked all my preferences and while clicking around my Events and Librarys appeared in iPhoto though I'm unable to open any Events and generally nothing's working.
I've tried trashing my preferences and reinstalling. I've made sure that everything is up to date. Still I met by the same blank screen. Furthermore it seems I cannot quit iPhoto and I have to force-quit the application.
While looking for a solution I tried "iPhoto Library Manager" - but no luck there either. It was unable yo rebuild the library, what seems to be the obvious solution. As far as I know, there no way to rebuild the new iPhoto 8 (09) Library...???
Anyone have a solution to my troubles.
    Thx

Hmm it seems I cannot go back to iPhoto 08 without making a complete restore. I'm not ready to try that and risk trouble in other applications (Adobe packages etz). By the way I upgraded both iLife and iWorks at the same time.
The rebuild didn't help att all it seems. The problem is the same. Blank iPhoto until I click around in the preferences, then all librarys and events suddenly appear. But they're all completely useless. Still no access to individual pictures inside Events. I can open Events in a new window and look through the photos but that's it...
I did this upgrade on my MacPro. Luckily my "real" photos are on my MacBookPro, but I don't think I will try upgrading before i find a solution...
    Any ideas are most welcome.

  • Re: iPhoto deleting photos from old library and new library

Hello.  I really hope someone can help me.  I'm about to tear my hair out.  I recently copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive because I'm seriously out of space on my 24"iMac (2008).  I am a photographer and have a mess of an iPhoto library to clean up.  It was a VERY large volume, and it ran overnight.  It appears that everything transferred fine.  I did the transfer exactly as instructed by many forums: Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library, drag and drop to WD My Book 1 TB EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Then I opened iPhoto via the icon in the dock while holding down the Option/Alt key and chose the new location on the ext drive to point iPhoto to the new library.  My problem is this:   I went into the old library, which I renamed iPhoto Library - Old (after the fact, which I hope didn't cause the problem), and deleted an event that I didn't care about.  To my surprise, it deleted the event in BOTH libraries.  I have tried repeatedly to point iPhoto to the right library, both using the dock and going through applications.  It is as though the 2 libraries are somehow inter-connected, and not separate.  At times, I will open the old library through finder, but I can see it highlight the icon for the EHD and it opens that.  I am at my wits end, as at any given point in time I don't know which library it has brought up.  I am trialling Aperture, and am trying to move photos over to Aperture from iPhoto, but really need to free up space on my internal drive to be able to work with it. I'd eventually like to move the masters to the EHD, etc., but I'm still in the learning curve with all that (I'll be hitting that forum soon, I'm sure).  My highest priority right now is to figure out how to separate the 2 iPhoto duplicate libraries so I can delete the photos from the desktop without affecting the photos on the External Hard Drive.  I've tried everything I can think of and everything I found while scouring these forums.  Here is the information I think you would need:
                                                             - 24" iMac Intel, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5)
                                                             - 2 TB WD External hard drive running Time Machine, (so everything from the desktop is backed up).
                                                             - 1TB WD My Book that is formatted as I mentioned above, which I copied the iPhoto Library to.
                                                             - 1 soon-to-be-bald photographer.
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give me.  I really like my hair, and don't wish to lose it!
    Gail
PS - Just a little background.  I have been working on this whole space issue for more than a week now.  This is the 3rd new external hard drive I've had this week due to "issues."  Had a problem with all 3 but finally figured this one out, and it's now working fine.  I am so far behind in some photo editing work because of the hard drive space issues, and I cannot seem to resolve them no matter how hard I try.  Hence the frustration.  Thanks again.

THANK YOU LARRY!!  I did not realize that once you switch libraries, it kept you in that library until you switch back using the option key. I thought that the iPhoto icon would take me to the new library, and going through finder to the old library name would take me to the old one.  I was actually in the new library the whole time, and all of the images I deleted were deleted from there.  I just switched back to the old library and all of the photos were still there.  I also tried deleting from the old library, which is what I wanted to do, and then switching to the new library and it did not affect the photos there at all.  So, this was indeed the answer.
Whew, what a relief. You're a life saver.  I might actually be able to get some work done now.
    Thanks again so much.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
