New iPod on existing Mac

I am going to retire my old 4Gb iPod mini which I only really use for the gym, and go over to a 5th gen iPod with the 80Gb disc, mainly as I travel more and want to watch movies on it.
I have about 8Gb of MP3's on my Mac which i don't want to rip all over again, but I guess its not as simple as plugging in the new iPod and it'll sync up is it ?
There are no iTunes purchases on the Mac at all - just CD's I own.
Is it possible to just transfer the iTunes library to my new iPod or do I need a third party software programme ?
Thanks

but I guess its not as simple as plugging in the new iPod and it'll sync up is it ?
I can't speak from experience (still using a 5 GB 1st. gen. iPod), but there is no re-ripping required.
It should be just as simple as plugging in the new iPod and selecting the entire library to sync.
No 3rd party software required.
Hope this helps.

My 1st ipod was lost. My library is on a Dell with Windows.  I registered my new ipod to a Mac.  How can I get my library from Windows onto my new Ipod?

Thank you for your help.  I am still having trouble.  As you can tell, I am not technologically advanced AT ALL.  My music is all showing up in the library but when I go to file in the top left corner, Sync is greyed out and I cannot select it.  I'm gonna continue to try this.  It's been a long time since I had my 1st ipod and things have changed so much I will probably need to research this stuff.  Thanks again for your help.

  • Upgrade issues - new ipod with existing itunes

My previous 20GB ipod died and I have bought a 5th generation 30GB. When I try to install the new software using the disc provided in the box, I get the following dialogue box:
"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel."
If I do this, will it erase all of my songs on the pc? I have Windows XP. If so, can anyone tell me how to update the software for the new ipod without losing my current personal library of songs?

    Hi Jjonty,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You shouldn't have to download more software (iTunes)
since you already had an iPod. Did you upgrade your
iTunes to the latest version? You
should be able to just hook your iPod up to your
computer and have it work. I am a Mac user so I am
not positive how your PC works with the iPod.

Excellent. Thank you. Seems to be working beuatifully on downloading the whole catalogue. Great news as I have been going through iPod commuting withdrawal.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. I appreciate it.

  • New iPod touch and mac

i got a new ipod touch and i need to sync it so that i can get the songs that are on my old ipod touch but i don't know how to sync my old ipod to the itunes on my mac. i deauthorized my old computer so i havent had an itunes

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer non-iTunes purchased music by using a third-party program like one of thos discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
    - Then sync the new iPod to the computer.

  • Synching new Ipod to existing library

Sorry if this is really basic.... I have a new Ipod classic (used to have a mini) and I want to start using it and synch it to my existing library. I have no idea where to start. I have got the most up to dtae version of itunes, but the synch option seems greyed out in the file menu. Do I have to de-install my old Ipod or is it possible to have 2 synched to the same library???
    Thanks in advance.
    Fiona

When you first connect the iPod, you see the set up assistant/licensing agreement and of course you must click "agree" in order to proceed.
Then you'll be prompted to name the iPod and choose a method of auto syncing your iPod. If you want to manually mange the content of your iPod, remove the check mark from the auto sync option. (It may be already set to manual and that's why the sync option is greyed out). Click "done" and that takes you to the registration screen. Then your done, and you can begin transferring music from your iTunes library.
You can have as many iPods as you like synced to one iTunes library.

  • New IPOD w/Existing ITUNES, CAN'T download 7.4 & NO SETUP ASSISTANT?

Ok. I have two ipods. Now Three... My One IPOD has been updated with new version 7.4, my other one-(shuffle) was updated with 7.4....but..
I just got the new IPOD and when I connect it to my computer, it does not send me through the Setup Assistant....just tells me that I need a newer version of 7.4 to use the IPOD.
The problem comes when it directs me to the 'Download 7.4 version'...I hit the control key and says "thank you for downloading itunes"..
THe issue is that I already have iTunes and it asks me if I want to replace my existing itunes setup?
I say ok,and save it and nothing....Same screen and no prompts...
With my other two ipods, as soon as I have plugged into my computer; it recognizes it as a new ipod and takes me through to register and stuff....I can't download new version....so I am now in a rutt......
Can anyone help me to understand how I download the new version 7.4 into the new IPOD, so I can get started on the Setup Assistant?
    What am I missing here???
    Thanks..

OK. Now trying to figure out what you are saying here. It sounds to me like you are only downloading iTunes 7.4 to wherever it is your default location is for downloading and not actually installing it.
From what you are saying above it sounds as if you are only repeatedly downloading it and Windows is asking you if you want to overwrite the file it had previously downloaded and saved.
After you download the file does it give you an option to open or run the file? If so you need to do that. If not you need to find where the file is being saved to (save it to your desktop if your not sure where it is going by default) and double click it to start the install procedure.
The tips here may be useful http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
But honestly it sounds to me as though you didn't actually install it.
As far as the latter part of the question goes. iTunes does not actually get installed to the new iPod. The new iPod Nano does, however, require iTunes 7.4 to be installed.

  • Updating a new iPod with existing iTunes library - Unknown Error (-69)

Just unwrapped my shiny new iPod and connected it to my laptop and part way through the update an unknown error occurred and the update stopped as it was unable to update disk. Error (-69).
Anyone know how I can sort this out or shall I take the iPod back?

  • Synching new iPod with existing iTunes

Hi, my old iPod mini was replaced by apple within warranty for a defect. How do I load all my songs that are currently on my iTunes onto the new iPod mini. It's an iPod Mini 6GIG and I'm using iTunes 4.7.1.30 software.
    Thanks

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
    Still no joy, see these.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
    Strange iPod behavior.
When restoring the iPod, put it into disk mode first.

  • New ipod on Existing iTunes

I currently have an iPod classic and have recently purchased an iPod touch that I have not used yet. Tonight, I am going to try synching it to my current iTunes. Should I run into any problems trying to share an iTunes library among a few differnt iPods? My wife has one also so that would be 3 iPods using the same iTunes, same computer.
Additionally I backed up all my music on CD's through iTunes as I am going to be getting a new computer. Once I get my new computer, download iTunes, and login does all my "purchased" music through iTunes transfer or does that move with my backup disks?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can use as many iPods on a PC as you want. iTunes knows each one's unique serial number.

New iPod Touch devices require a minimum of Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 in addition to a fairly recent version of iTunes. If you are running Tiger (10.4) or earlier, you can't just update to Leopard for free; you have to buy it.

I own an iPod Touch 4g. Now i'm planning to buy iPod Touch 5g. Is it possible for me to register the new iPod with existing Apple ID so that i can transfer the apps from my existing account to my new Ipod 5g?

There should definitely be no issue. You can register more than one Apple device with the same Apple ID and get the same apps on both devices without having to pay for the apps again.
Alternatively, if you want all your settings to say the same, do a backup of your old iPod Touch and then whe you receive the new iPod, restore the backup on it and it'll save you the trouble from having to redownload everything.
    Cheers.

  • Issues using new iPod Touch due to OS

    Hello all.
I just got an iPod touch for my birthday, and upon attempting to use it, I was instructed to download and install the newest version of iTunes.
No problem, except I cannot install the newest version of iTunes because it won't run with my current operating system.
So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
I am assuming that I cannot install OSX 10.5.whatever because I am currently running Mac OSX 10.3.9!! (Old, I know)
After hunting the apple site, and finally the web, I cannot find a download for 10.4.0 (tiger) and without it I am afraid that I can't continue to update my OS, and therefore I can't even USE my brand new iPod touch.
Help! Please! What do I do?

So, I went to download updates for my OS and I cannot install the newest versions (my machine tells me that my software is up to date when I try to use the software update tool - it's a big liar).
Software Update only shows you free updates.

You can if the computer meets the requirements for it. A previous OS version isn't required for the retail package.

  • How can I re-name the name the system automatically gave the new iPod I connected to my iTunes account?  It did not give me a choice, but automatically named it.

I got a new iPod Nano for my 80-year-old father who lives with me.  I already uploaded his cds to my iTunes account, but when I connected the new iPod to my Mac to put his music on it, the program automatically named his iPod with MY name.  I want to differentiate it from my iPod Nano, but it never gave me a chance to give his iPod his name instead of mine.  He will not have an iTunes account; I will handle uploading his music and managing his iPod for him, but I need it to set up under his name, not mine.  My iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc.  all sync automatically with my entire iTunes library.  I only want to selectively upload music to his iPod.  How can I rename what iTunes is calling his iPod?   Help! -    Judy- Charleston
