New iPod with FireWire connection?

When I plug in my new video iPod to the FireWire connection, the screen says "FireWire connection not supported. Please use USB cable." I was just wondering if anyone knows a way to use FireWire with a new video iPod.
Thanks,
Geoff
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

It is impossible to use firewire to transfer media off your computer to your 5g Video iPod. However you can still use the firewire cable to charge your iPod.

  • New iPod, won't connect

I installed all the software for the new iPod video, then connected the iPod. Then I realized I hadn't hit "restart" first. I disconnected my iPod, which had loaded on two songs, then restart my computer. Now when I connect my 'pod, it flashes the "do not disconnect" method, but iTunes doesn't seem to pick up that it's there. Any help?
    Thanks in advance.

    For your second problem:
You have the most recent version of iTunes installed and did you install the full cd that came with your pod? How are you moving the files onto your iPod?

If you are getting that message on a brand new Mac with nothing connected to the USB ports, take it back. It is broken.

  • How to get a new ipod with ipod's warranty

My ipod nano is a total loss. The screen is totally unfanctuanal. Its a Technical problem. What are the steps to get a new ipod with the warranty?

I was honestly just wondering that myself. My LCD screen literally cracked last night and i cant find a single thing on the apple support site that is helping me get it fixed under the warranty. It's kind of frustrating

  • Is possibile to syncronize a second new ipod with the same library?

IS possibile to syncronize a second new iPod with the same library?

My gf was having the same issues and also with a big echo every time I called her either from my 4S or even fron a land line as per other comments here. They told he to take it into the Apple store and they reset the software and now it's working fine.....so far.
Now today my bluetooth earpiece has decided to stop working for some unknown reason and then the last person that called me said my phone keep cutting out. I don't know whether that was because I had to turn off my bluetooth to answer the phone or what.
I suspect Apple will be sending out an update to fix some of these reported issues but in the meantime the local Apple store seems to be the only option. Just hoping I don't have to take that option as that would require a huge inconvenience for me as neither of the two stores in the Vanvouver area are remotely close to me.
    Good luck.

  • How to install a new ipod with new serial number

I have recieved a new ipod with a new serial number. i lost my old cd which installs the ipod onto the comp with the new serial number ect. and ofcourse ints not enough to just have the new ipod updater and itunes. HOW do i install the ipod? anybody? how do i get that program?
    Thanx

good lord ... the 0x80040707 can sometimes be
caused by uninstalling software from a different user
account from which it was originally installed, or
installing a higher version of the software in a
different user account. (haven't seen a report
strongly suggesting this was going on for a while
with an ipod updater install, but it's been reported
    every now and then.)
Just so you know, nothing was done with the original installation, on the original user's account (let's call it UserA. My account, UserB was already in existence when all the software was originally installed to the root directory in C:\programs. Both accounts are administrators. This is getting so frustrating that I think I'll bring my external drive that has all the stuff I want to put onto the Ipod, do it in the office, and that will be that!

  • Does newer Software allow iPod 3G Firewire connection?

I just replaced the hard drive in my 3G. Afterward, I could not get it to be recognized by iTunes, or even the computer as an external device. I could not restore or use as disk or any type of access to the iPod.
I was just about to throw it away when I thought I would try the USB cable that came with my new nano. It worked, iTunes came up with the iPod and gave me the option to restore.
It started the restore fine and then gave me a message saying to complete the process, I needed to remove it and plug it into an external power supply (I know it is not powered by a USB cable). I took and plugged it into the firewire charger and the progress bar came up and the restore process completed.
It is now working fine using the USB cable, but sill will not allow access using my firewire cable. All that it will do using firewire is the drive clicks about every three seconds and iTunes cannot see it.
Possibly the firewire cable is bad, but I have checked it for continuity and it seems fine. Thus the question, is there any chance the newer iPod software is not compatible with firewire? It behaves the same using XP or Vista.
    Thanks

There is no newer iPod software for an old 3rd gen iPod. When you do a Restore with the latest version of iTunes, it is installing the same old 3rd gen iPod software that has not changed for years.
iTunes itself is different, so you might suspect that the latest version (8.1) no longer supports 3rd gen iPods using FireWire. However, I have a 3rd gen iPod connected over FireWire, and it works 100% with iTunes 8.1 (although its on a Mac).
So I would suspect your FireWire cable.
You can get a docking cable that has both FireWIre and USB connectors on it. Apple used to sell their official cable, but they do not offer it any more. However, there are third-party version (much cheaper) on eBay
    [For example|http://cgi.ebay.com/1394-FIREWIRE-USB-CABLE-DATA-WIRE-CORD-FOR-APPLE-IP ODW0QQitemZ120389654657QQcmdZViewItemQQptZOther_MP3_Player_Accessories?hash=item12 0389654657&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1% 7C294%3A50]
(I don't know anything about this seller.)
You connect the USB end to your computer for data syncing. You connect the FireWire end to your power adapter to supply power while syncing. So You can charge and sync at the same time, without using your computer's FIreWire port; use the USB port instead, which you know currently works with this iPod, your computer, and your iTunes installation.

  • Charging New iPod with Old FireWire Charger

Hi, this should be a quick one to solve... I have an old FireWire AC Charger from a 2nd (or 3rd?) Gen iPod I no longer use, and the original FW cable. The dock connector on the old FW cable fits my newer iPods (5.5G iPod Video and a Touch), can the FW AC charger be used to charger these newer USB-only iPods, or will it fry them?
If so, will it also work with a Nano? I want to get one for a friend who doesn't own a computer, so a wall charger will be their only way to charge (in which case I'll just by a new wall charger if the old FW one is incompatible).
    Thanks!
(Note: I don't need it to transfer data, just to charge)

Yes, you can charge new iPod off older Firewire chargers. Just no data transfer.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • How to use 2 devices with firewire connections on new MBP?

I just bought a new Mac Book Pro and I am planning on recording a band with Logic Pro soon. I plan on purchasing an external hard drive with firewire to record the audio to.
My question is I am confused on how I will use both my Firepod (which is a firewire audio interface) and a Firewire external hard drive when my Mac Book Pro only has one Firewire input.
Is there an obvious solution I am not seeing? Could I go from the firepod to the external hard drive to the Mac Book?
Would using the USB ports for the external hard drive make the quality suffer? Thanks for the advice and help!

Is there an obvious solution I am not seeing? Could I go from the firepod to the external hard drive to the Mac Book?
Use a FireWire hub. If the external drive has two or more FireWire ports, it's a hub.
Would using the USB ports for the external hard drive make the quality suffer?
    No, but performance might.

  • Ipod with firewire cable

My son was given an older, 1st gen, I think, Ipod that seems to only work with firewire cable. Is there a way to charge this directly on a laptop with USB portsw only? Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
I wanted to try to buy a Firewire wall charger (the one he got seems not to be working very well), but I couldn't find any on the Apple website.

If it's a 1st or 2nd gen iPod, it does not have a dock connector; it has a FireWire port (like an external hard drive). So the FireWire cable used with it would have a FireWire connector at both ends.
Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
If you are able to try using your USB docking cable, the iPod is probably a 3rd gen. Does it have a touch wheel and four round touch button in a line between the wheel and display? It was the first iPod with the standard dock connector, but unfortunately, the 3rd gen iPod was designed to work with FireWire, so it will not charge over USB.
Apple does not sell the FireWire power adapter these days, but you can find them on eBay. Make sure it is the FireWire type.
If you want to use USB 2.0 to connect and sync the 3rd gen iPod, and you are able to get a FireWire power adapter, you can get this special cable that Apple still sells.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A
It has both a FireWire connector and a USB connector. You connect the USB connector to your laptop USB port. At the same time, you connect the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter to supply power for charging.

  • Can I charge my new ipod using firewire power adapter?

Just got my new 30GB ipod and realised that it doesn't come with power adapter to plug in directly in power outlet.
Can I use the firewire power adapter which I have leftover after my 3rd gen ipod died on me?
Also can I use the firewire to connect it to my powerbook for charging and song transfer? I thought firewire is faster than usb2 then why new ipods don't come with firewire cable anymore?
    Many thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

think if you do your research and read up you will see the USB2 is indeed faster than Firewire. I actually did a few test on a dual G5 using both the Firewire and USB2 and in all my test, USB2 was faster.
If USB2 was faster for you, that's wonderful. I'm not about to start arguing with you over it.
What I can tell you is that you're certainly in the minority if this was the case for you.
USB2 has a theoretical maximum speed of 480Mbps. While this is certainly a higher number than Firewire 400's 400Mbps, Firewire will still vastly outperform USB2 in almost every case. It is near impossible to get anywhere close to 480Mbps with USB2. Even under ideal conditions, USB2 still has to contend with other processes on the machine, and other devices in the bus.
This is the nature of USB's design.
It is not uncommon for Firewire to reach near maximum speeds consistently. This has been proven time and time again.
Like I mentioned already, if USB2 is faster for you... go ahead and use it. I'm not going to tell you otherwise.
I'm quite sure I've done sufficient research on this, as well as many other people in this industry, and these forums. Perhaps it is you that might want to do a little more reading.

  • New Ipod (with video) crashes my Windows PC

I have just bought the new Ipod and have to say I am generally very impressed. However, whenever I connect it to my PC (Dual core AMD64 with 2GB RAM) after about 10 mins of streaming music, video, or data transfer my machine either freezes or reboots itself. This is the first time a usb device has done this to my pc and I use a few. Therefore I strongly doubt that it is something wrong with my pc. Does anyone else experience something similar? Anyone found a way to stop it? Do Apple recognise these sorts of problems if they dont affect Apple macines? For example if it doesnt crash a mac, it must be the PC. If anyone can offer me some answers I would appreciate it

How many other USB devices do you heavily use? If you can copy all that to a USB HD (other than the iPod) for 20 minutes and it doesn't hang then perhaps the iPod/itunes combo has a problem. If its a bug in the firmware as you suggest, then many more people would be having the issue. Also just try copying data to the ipod as if it were a HD and see if it hangs, that mostly removes the iTunes portion of the equation.
New devices can sometimes bring to light driver and other issues that weren't there before. For example: On my iMac G5, I had just connected up a new Firewire Pioneer dvd burner and I was burning coasters left and right and locking things up. It wasn't until I noticed that having the iSight on the same bus caused the crash. Granted, it shouldn't do this period, but it showed that a combination of circumstances caused my issue.

  • New iPods with old eMac

I have a G4 eMac with USB 1 and,of course, firewire. The newer iPods have no firewire connection and are using USB 2. I know that USB 2 is backward compatible with USB 1 but it USB 1 is painfully slow for data transfer.
Is there any way to add USB 2 to an older eMac?
If I purchased an external HD with both FW and USB2 ports, could I attach the HD to the eMac with FW and then use the USB2 port on the external HD to attach a new USB2 iPod and get true USB2 performance.
    TIA.
    Maurice

The USB 1.1 ports can't be upgraded. A dual-interface HD won't trick the computer into running faster, either; nor are there any Firewire-USB converters.
On the semi-bright side, depending on which model iPod you have in mind, you might be able to just purchase the iPod Firewire 400 dock cable for around US$20 and use that. The cable's no longer included with new iPods but it still works with the larger iPods although not, apparently, with the Shuffle or the Nano.
