New iSight

PB G4 17 laptop, 1.33 GHz, 1.5 GB Ram, Tiger 10.4.7
Plugged in the iSight right out of the box and get the green light but no video. When I try iChat I get the message "camera is in use by another application" there is of course nothing else running (that I can see). When nobody else is on ichat and set preferences it says isight camera not connected --even though it is and the little green light is on.
Yes the cables are plugged in correctly and firmly. Any other ideas? is there a conflict with some other software that runs in the background?

Here is the story as it develops. I took my new iSight to the Computer Lab at school were I teach, and plugged it into an iMac. It worked first time! So now I know that the iSight is not defective it has something to do with my 17 inch laptop. For kicks and giggles I decided to plug it into my machine with a different cable. (I have boxes of old cables from 20 yrs of dedicated Mac ownership.) I am not connected to the internet mind you, the Computer is not even plugged into power, but the iSight was recognized immediately, and it started to download software? Is this software in the iSight camera itself? It was very weird. Anyway, It seems to be a cable issue. Of course it is one of the old Mac firewire cables (braided wire with clear umbilical covers.) that doesn't fit the new thin and slender firewire iSight holder, but I can pick up a new one of those at will.
With all the problems, I've read about iSight and 10.4.8. I won't be updating anytime soon. But at least I have a functioning camera. (I use it to make teaching demos.)
Thanks again everybody.

  • New iSight camera out of focus

I just received my new iSight external video camera which I am using on a Mac Pro. I have access to an internal iSight camera on an iMac. The internal camera works great. However, the external iSight is out of focus.
I have gone through all the Apple trouble shooting and contacted Apple support by phone. I have spent many hours on this problem. After completing this process the camera remains out of focus in iChat, iMovie and Skype. After reading several discussion groups I tried iGuess as it has a focus feature which is not available in iChat, iMovie or Skype. To my pleasant surprise the camera focused.
My conclusion (which differs from that of Apple Support) is that this is not a mechanical problem but a software problem. Am I correct? Will there be a software update to fix this problem?

Know anybody else with a Mac that you could check this iSight on? Know anybody else with an external iSight that you could try on your computer? Just to make sure it is, in fact, the software and not the camera?
Plus, since the camera's new, go through Apple Support again and if they still think that the camera's hosed, why not exchange it? (See about them sending you a new one with a prepaid shipping label to return the old one, so you're never iSightless).
A software update for what? iChat? iMovie? Skype? All of the above? These softwares all work for your internal camera. Not familiar with iGuess, but you might be manually (un)focusing to compensate for a possible mechanical problem.

  • Two brand new Isight cameras won't work with my computer!@!!= ARGH!!!!!!!!!

The first Isight I bought had some stuck pixels and was returned to apple for a new Isight. The new camera worked for a couple of days then screwed up the video with ichat and skype. Worked OK with Quicktime, Imovie, Quicktime Broadcast although it locked up like the first camera did when recording on native resolution in QT.
I hope my experience hasn't been typical of the Isight camera.
Why would it work with quicktime/imovie/quicktime broadcast but refuse to provide decent video to ichat or skype even after formatting and reinstalling everything. Why then would it work ok on a macbook with no problems but not work on an Ibook? Why would a firewire camcorder have no problems using any of the programs but then run into problems using an Isight camera?
    ibook g4 12   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

10.6 Snow Leopard will run on any Intel mac. So that's any Mac made in the last 6 years. Snow Leopard came out in July 2009 and only cost $29. So you had over 3 years to have upgraded your MacBook.
You're willing to pay a couple of hundred dollars for a new phone but not the $29 in the last three years to have upgraded your OS on your MacBook.
The Snow Leopard 10.6 DVD should still be available from Apple for $20. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775 to purchase it. It may still be in the Legacy Products list. The App Store which is required to download 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion is part of the 10.6.6 update.
If they no longer have any in stock you will have to buy it from eBay or Apple resellers that still have stock. But you will have to pay a premium since the DVDs are no longer being made. Snow Leopard DVDs are already up to $100 on Amazon.

  • Lens off-center on new iSight

I just received my new iSight and just started testing it. I notice that my lens internally seems to be slightly off-center as I am not centered in the window if I sit dead center in front of the camera. Is this a common issue? It doesn't seem to be a huge problem as I can rotate the camera and center myself, but it just seems a bit odd.
    Thanks for the help,
    Todd

I guess I just wasn't sure how common it was if at all. I searched here and so no other mention and seeing as your reply is the only one thus far, it leads me to believe it is an anomaly. I may return it for another, I haven't decided yet.
Thanks a lot for the response,
    Todd

  • New isight and cant do anything with it!

i have a new ibook 12 inch G4 and a new isight cam.
i cant use it on msn, it wont work on yahoo, amsn doesnt work, and on the chatroom that i want to use it on noone can see me.
i have clicked the video box in this room but still nothing.
i have a .mac acount but still nothing. the cam works in ichat but i dont know anyone else who uses ichat.
at the minute i have £100 of camera that does nothing other than show my reflection (that is a mirror isnt it?)
will any of this be resloved with a different camera or is a mac and webcam on the internet a no-no?

Hello renek. Sorry, but I do not understand your response to me. SightSpeed is one of the chat apps listed in Some Applications You Can Use With iSight. Did you not see that when you read Using iSight linked above?
If I misunderstand and you are really trying to respond to richarddrake, please ignore this post.
However, if you want more discussion on SightSpeed, I can offer that my testing from my system to others that are working properly shows that SightSpeed's video quality is not nearly so good as Chat AV's. Moreover, once connected, you will note that SightSpeed's interface is definitely "un-Mac-like", although it is not difficult.
Many posts here report that SightSpeed makes easier connections than iChat AV for some users, albeit at lower quality than iChat AV. Chat AV's superior A/V quality may explain its more demanding connection requirements.
In my testing, SightSpeed Basic's quality does seem better than the quality of the free version of iVisit, but those having difficulty connecting via iChat AV could certainly consider both of these video chat alternatives.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • New Isight G5 20"

    Greetings All;
I have had my new MAC now for 3 weeks and thought I would post my impressions so far. I have been using MAC for about 20 years now and in my experience apple has done a fantastic job. My G5 runs silent, I can't even hear the fan. I have had no problems to date with the exception of getting USB printer sharing up and running with my G3 running 10.3.9, I believe this is a bug in the 10.4.3 update and am sure will be corrected. I have experienced some problems with DVD burning but think this is related to the disks, Memorex which can be of questional quality. Everything else is working as it should be. I am running a small wireless network and have had no issues on that side either. So in a nutshell I am very impressed with the latest addition to the Apple line up.
    JJ

I feel you Vedic. While I do think this iMac G5 iSight is the best machine Apple has ever released. I do understand some peoples frustration with what can be considered spotty reliability. I owned a Rev A or 1.8 G5 iMac 20 inch and had 5 major replacements on it in 11 months. It was replaced with this new 2.1 G5 model. I think apple released the iMac G5 as a beta without fully doing comprihensive testing on heat concerns with this computer. Look at how much they redesigned the internals of this machine.
    here
IMO this means they couldve done more testing and avoided a whole lotta bad press on this. BUT Im glad i have the machine I have now. One thing you can rest assured is for the most part AppleCare will take care of you.
Anyway, i hope you dont have anymore probs. I know how frustrating it can be.

  • Unable to test new isight due to "insufficient bandwidth"

My father just bought the new imac and sent me a isight camera.
We tried to test it today and kept getting the "insufficient bandwidth" message
Both him and I are running 10.4.3 and have cable internet.
We both ran speed tests and our connection speeds are great.
We both turned off our firewalls and that failed to help.
We made sure our speed lined up with our streaming media preferences in both ichat and quicktime.
    Neither of us have Virex.
    I am at a loss.
can anyone give me a suggestion?

    Hi Portland,
Most likely this is due to two device doing DHCP
DHCP is a way of the routing device giviing out IP addresses to the other devices on the LAN.
A modem will not pass on the Public IP address if it is DHCP issued unless it is specifically set to Bridge or Pass Through mde.
A router howver will pass oon previous IP addresses and add in it's own. This can give the end computer two IP addresses and confuses iChat. (you can only see one) (subnets)
Another problem can be if both devices do Port Forwading or any other form of NAT (Network Address Translation). If there are two lots of this the ports get messed up and no chat happens.
Your dad may need to learn a bit about LAN networking to enable him to use the modem and router with iChat.

  • NEW iSight at Apple Store?

OK, the ship date still says a week, if I order it is it the new version? And if it is, what's different? If it ain't much, I may look for a bargain on e-bay. If it does have cool improvements, I'll buy a new one from Apple. I can't find ANYTHING concerning changes in this camera. Has anyone heard anything to indicate the new one will be worth the wait, or do I need to fire up the PayPal account and go for it on e-bay? Apple...tell us what's up with this camera! I'm tired of waiting for news. Just a HINT of what to expect? C'mon...throw me a bone at least!

It sounds like I might go bargain hunting on E-Bay then. I've been holding off, kind of expecting a new unit with some improvements, but buying a 3-1/2-year-old cam new doesn't make as much sense to me as saving a few bucks on a used one, since it appears little has changed. Heck, who knows, the old one may work better with the tried-and-true toxins inside! The iSight still sounds like the best cam out there, but until they announce an improved model it looks like some private party will get to pocket my dollars instead of Apple. The least they could have done by making us wait this long would be to lower the price. Oh well, if you want the best, I guess it's gonna cost ya. Better switch sites and get to bidding!

  • New iSight not working at all. Need help.

I've read the other discussions to see if anyone has had the same problem.
    Here's what mine is:
When plug up the isight via firewire, the green light comes on for about 3 seconds and then goes off while making this quick "tzzzz" sound. Ichat recognizes i have a camera. when i click on the video icon, its a black screen.
    That's the problem, here's what i've done:
Changed firewire cords, changed firewire ports, checked apple profiler, its ok, thrown away 3rd party software, opened and closed the white iris. Trashed some preferences out of the library. i think thats it.
Any suggestions? I think its broke.

You have tried several good ideas. Other suggestions in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.

  • My processor isn't strong enough for my new isight...HELP!

I recently moved overseas, so I purchased an isight for my imac (450 MHz PowerPC G3) and installed OS 10.4 so I could video chat with my friends back home. It wasn't until I attempted to use it I realized my processor was 450 MHz...not the required 600 MHz. Is there anything I can do without spending a fortune. Or is there another compatible webcam out there that would work on an imac with OS 10.4.2? Please advise. Thank you!

    Hello Lyonsfam,
Two software products that will let your iSight and iChatAV work with your G3 are iChatUSBCam and iGlasses.
Both are from the same company. Both offer free a trial to let you try before you buy.

  • New iSight - Why did iChat AV Work 1st Time but Not Since?

I recently bought an iSight to use with my sister in Minnesota (I'm in Canada, eh). It worked perfectly - the first time I used it after installation. I haven't been able to create a connection with my sister since.
Between the first connection and my second connection attempt, my sister installed a Linksys router and turned on her Mac firewall. She is still able to use iChat for video chats with other people without a problem. Nothing has changed at my end (I have a Linksys router, too, and my Mac firewall has always been on). Sadly, I don't have anyone else with whom to test my connection, but as I said, nothing has changed on my system.
The error message accuses the invited party of failing to respond. This is simply not true. The invited party always "Accepts". (We've alternated initiator and responder roles.)
I've reviewed several support documents including the one about using iChat with an NAT router, although I don't think this is the problem. I opened the ports in my router and after this I was still unable to connect, but for a different reason - "insufficient bandwidth". Restoring my router to the previous configuration (i.e., no special adjustments to ports) restored the original error message ("failed to respond").
I checked my Quicktime and various system preferences and they were correct. This isn't a surprise since iChat did work with my system the one time.
I'm reluctant to keep fiddling with various settings when my original setup actually worked - once.
Thank you for pondering my problem!
    James

    Hi.
I apologize for not noting the model of router. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G wireless, but my eMac is hooked up with a wire (the wireless is for another Mac). I'm not sure what my sister is using but I will find out.
I agree that it looks like all this is her fault, what with the router and the firewall and the what-not, but I'm mystified by the fact that it worked the first time.
I've printed off some of the other threads and I will try a few other things.
    Thanks you very much!

  • Is there a way to make Firewire iSight work with USB apps?

I am awaiting attival of my new iSight on Monday and I was beginning to wonder if there is some software or a trick you can use to get other chat programs to look at the firewire port instead of USB to enable the programs to see the iSight as a viable cam to use in those programs, or am I limited to using iChat when videoconferencing? I have the iChat for USB software that allows my Piece-Of-S#@% Kensington to work in iChat—making it recognize a USB cam as opposed to looking at the firewire port. Is there an equivalent out there that fools the other chat programs into looking at Firewire instead of USB?

OK, if I read you correctly, these programs such as Yahoo, etc. will look wherever they can to find the cam then? I wondered if they just looked to see if there was something plugged into a USB slot it could identify as a cam and if it didn't see anything there, I wasn't sure if it would look to the firewire port as well. I guess I'll know more when the cam gets here and I try it out, but from what you said they should work as well. 10:30 a.m. estimated arrival time. I'm pretty excited!

  • Is the new Ipod Touch 5g compatible with all of the ios 6 features and is the new Ipod have the exact same design as the Iphone 5 for example square sides, instead of curving sides?

Does the new Ipod have the same features as the Iphone 5 in terms of panorama, or like the new Isight camera? Like the same features/ design?

it is compatible with most iOS 6 things, the main difference is just the fact that it doesn't have 3G or 4G, which limits how much it can use Siri or Maps.
it does have panorama, and a 5 MP iSight camera. the design is different. it is a lot thinner, it has curved edges, and at no part of the side is it flat, same for the top and bottom. that is NOT the case for iPhone. also the iPod doesn't have a mic. on the front.
    hope this answered your question.
just remember this for iOS 6: pretty much everything that doesn't always require internet the iPod can do. if it is something liketurn by turn direction, unless you have wi-fi in car, it wont work.
if you need siri for anything outside of wifi, unless it's something on the hard drive itslef, i.e. setting up reminders, it wont work for thing such as facebook posts, looking for restaurants, etc.

  • ISight not picking up audio

I just unwrapped my new iSight camera. Plugged it in, started iChat and was thrilled to see the video come through crystal clear. I didn't do a thing, just plug and go. It was great.
I invited my wife to a video chat. She accepts. I see hear. I hear her. She sees me. But that's it.
"I can't hear you," she says.
No audio coming through at all. So I check the iChat preferences. Yup, iSight is the selected audio input. But no reaction from the audio levels. Slider works fine. I crank it up all the way... still nothing.
So I go to the system preferences under Sound. Same thing. iSight shows up. Slider works fine. No audio input at all.
So I go to the MIDI utility. Same story. iSight shows up. It's clear the computer knows it's there. THe video works, after all. The sliders work fine. But I'm gettin nothing.
It doesn't seem to be the computer.
It doesn't seem to be the cable.
I'm left to think that I got a bad iSight camera (or more properly, a bad microphone).
Please help. What is my next step?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Using iChat 3.1.5

So, in response to the tips left by others on this thread, I took my iSight with me to NYC and tried it out on my wife's MacBook.
    Same exact problem.
All the proper preferences are selected. The computer recognizes the camera. Video works. No audio input whatsoever.
Interestingly, the audio input meter in both iChat and System Preferences will once in a while spike and hold, then gradually come back down. Of course, there's no sound coming through the speakers when this happens, and I'm not making any noise that the microphone might pick up. I suspect it's a connection issue, like how bad microphone cords will sometimes "pop" when you twist them in the input socket.
At any rate, I seem to have recieved a bad product and I'll be sending it in for repair (groan). If anyone knows anything more, perhaps something like a recall or a known defect, please post it.
    Thanks for your help.
