New issue with Tiger...

I'm using Tiger (10.4.10) and all of a sudden I can't open System Profile or download upgrades or new software? Otherwise all is well!
I use Onyx and Cocktail for general maintenance... usually about once a month or when my Mac slows down.
I could use some directions

I'd restore your backup and only perform maintenance with Macjanitor or Anacron if you find you can't leave your machine on overnight at least once a month in Screen Saver. Other functions of Onyx and Cocktail should only be used when troubleshooting very specific issues and should not be used as general maintenance software.

    Why does FF save files to desktop, when I have "downloads" checked in options? This is a new issue with the latest version 3.6.3 . Using Windows XP Driving me nuttier! Thanks.
    (Is is that MicroNetFrame Asst thing?)
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == When I installed latest version

    Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help.
    It was just a hunch that MircoNetFrame was causing the problem. I disabled it as you suggested, and I still have the problem.
    I just changed under Tools>Options> General - had checked "ask me every time" under downloads, so instead of asking me, FF saved the download to I know not where. It no longer saves it to the desktop, leaving a duplicate in "my documents".
    In windows, I have found unless one knows the entire name of the document, one can never find anything. It isn't listed under recent ''''''__. I can't recall the nomenclature, but the
    capability is ridiculous. So, I don't know where that file I just downloaded is!
    I downloaded a PDF file, but this happens with all DL's. It was so easy to have them all stacked in one place and I could recall
    what I had and when I downloaded it easily.
    Do you have any other suggestions other that going back to the old version of FF, which I would rather not do?
    Thanks again for your time, it is very considerate to help a complete stranger, I must say. Sounds like something I might do! Cheers!

  • Website Owner having new issues with Clients and Windows 8

    I own a website that has a home-programmed chat. We've been in business about 12 years without any issues with compatibility. The chat is programmed in C and runs in a standard browser.
    Lately I've had a few users (3 or 4) that have upgraded their machines and can no longer run the chat.
    Most users that use Windows 8, or 7, or Vista, or whatever, have no problems. They can use the latest versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome, whatever they choose.
    However, these users with problems can use none of the above.
    I've gone through standard programs that block a chat, like firewalls and other spyware preventions. Shutting these off doesn't resolve the problem. Conflicting programs doesn't seem to be an issue, either. They aren't touch screen so I don't believe it
    is a problem with the video card.
    So that brings me back to the OS. The common thread seems to be that they are HP computers, and they have a new install of Windows 8. I think that there might be a missing DLL or other C Library that HP's installation of Windows 8 might be lacking.
    Any suggestions on if I'm on the right track, and more importantly, how do I fix this problem?

    Hi,
    Seems this is a web-based chatting program, I suggest you add the site to a compatibility view list, (launch IE, Tools\Compatibility View list) then check this issue again. Check the error message and infromation recorded in the event viewer to find out
    the cause.
    Make sure the computers have all the latest updates, especially for video and audio drivers.
    Clear the cache\temporary internet files in IE, or test this issue in a no add-ons mode.
    From your description, it also sounds like a "defect\bug" for the chatting-program on Windows 8 on HP computers, if so, it should be related with development. you may find more help in the developer forum

  • More Heat/Fan Issues with Tiger--Help

    I have followed the heat & fan issues for sometime. However, I finally decided it was time to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.3.
    I upgraded yesterday, first using the upgrade option to move from 10.3.9 to 10.4.0 and then installed the 10.4.3 combo upgrade. I've repaired permissions and rebuilt the disk directory using Disk Warrior. There were no directory errors and only a couple of trivial permissions changes.
    However, my Powerbook's fans are running constantly and my CPU heat is always pegged at about 135 degrees F, which is as hot as it ever gets. This happens within about 40 minutes of starting the Powerbook up cold and it stays that way for as long as I'm using it, regardless if there are any apps being used.
    Activity Monitor indicates that the launchd process is using from 18% to 20% of my CPU, even with nothing else running. I've disabled all Spotlight indexing and I've turned Dashboard off. It appears that it's the lanchd process that is accounting for the extra heat and fan use. It simply won't drop below the 18% to 20% of CPU. There is no other process that is using any significant amount of my CPU when nothing else is running.
    My processor is set at Automatic, the same as when I was using 10.3.9.
    I was using Silk, Application Switching Menu (ASM) and Macaroni, but I've uninstalled them. No change.
    I've reset the Power Manager (including deleting the com.Apple.PowerManagement.xml file) and reset NVRAM. Again, no change.
    Finally, when I boot back into 10.3.9 (on my backup hard drive), the fan activity and heat return to what I consider normal--much lower than with 10.4.3. Specifically, the heat and fan activity is directly related to CPU use. If I'm not doing anything, the heat drops and all the fans go off.
    There is one other curious effect of 10.4.3 vs. 10.3.9. When I'm running Firefox (latest version), all Firefox user-interface stuff (menu selections, opening many tabs in succession, etc.) are MUCH more sluggish than when using 10.3.9. Frankly, I was expecting the opposite.
    I would really like some help with this. I've read all the troubleshooing info on MacFixit and Macintouch related to heat and fan issues associated with Tiger.
    12 1.5Ghz Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    I'm the originator of this thread and I appear to have an answer.
    I tried an "Archive and Install" of Tiger, on top of my existing 10.4.3 install that was giving me the trouble I described above. I had the time today and figured "what the heck[ll]".
    I then installed each additional piece (10.4.3 combo update, airport updates, quicktime updates, java updates, etc), stopping after each one to check CPU temperatures and CPU use in Activity Monitor.
    I'm now back to a full 10.4.3 install, with all current recommended Apple software and I don't have the heat/CPU use problems I previously had. There is no significant use of the CPU by the launchd process.
    I also re-enabled Spotlight indexing and that doesn't cause a problem either.
    Also, my entire system is *MUCH* quicker and responsive. I wish I knew what piece in my previous system install was causing the problem, but hopefully my experience can help someone else. When in doubt, do an "Achive and Install" rather than an update to the previous system installation.
    By the way, with heavy Spotlight indexing going on and mild web browsing, my CPU temp is just 112 to 115 degrees F. Previously, with no Spotlight indexing and with NO apps running, my CPU temp was maxed at 135 degrees with fans on full. And if you're reading this thread, you know what max fans sound like on a 12" PB.

  • New Issues with Flash builder - Second time you do search from imported Tutorial file it breaks with AS error

    Okay, so I had an issue with the Design View that was broke because of the <s:text> tag inside of the <s:RichText> tag. Adobe fiexed that in one of the next released builds (discussion here in fourms). So I took the tutorial file (again) and started to work on it and all went okay, except that the 'tracking' method on the ricktext tag was taken out. Forums mentioned that. So on import of the 'tutorial' fxp from FC to Flex builder, you get several errors because FC still builds the fxp file with 'tracking' property being used in the RichText tag. No biggie, i just remapped to trackingLeft property in the effected files. Now mind you in  the older build that I had this project, worked fine, with the exception of the 'design view' issue with the <s:text> file borking the design view. Bug on it said it was fixed with the next build. which it was but this now when you take the EXACT same code and compile and run it the seach will break each and everytime. Think it has or may have something to do with Adobe taking out the 'tracking' property on the richtext tag.
    anyone else having this issue?
    attaching the fxp file
    btw, posted as a bug FB-21116

    I can recreate the problem but I haven't seen it reported

    There is information in Snippet 1 on my site about TOC

  • New issue with 3G network

    Hey guys, I live in Flagstaff, AZ which until recently has not had a 3G network. Today noticed that the phone connected to a 3G network when I turned it on, so I guess that 3G has been expanded. Unfortunately while connected to 3G in Flagstaff the phone will not browse the internet or the apps store (it appears that no data is moving, it just sits there trying to load a page for a while, then says it can't connect) and voice calling is terrible (apparently my voice breaks up a lot on the other end, though I can hear whoever I'm calling just fine). I have used 3G in other places and it works just fine for voice and data, so my question is this: is this an issue with my phone not working right, or is there an issue with the 3G network here? Maybe it was just turned on and isn't working right yet?
    Thanks.

    You isolated it right away
    If 3G is working in other areas with no voice breaks, or data issues. And only in Flagstaff, then the performance of 3G is isolated to that area not the iPhone.
    It may be possible at&t is still working on that area and are powering some of the towers up for testing purposes.
    http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/
    If you enter your area, then check mark the 3G box, you will see currently no 3G in that area. At least according to their map.

  • Now I have a new issue with this phone...

    I said in my last post that this is my first smartphone, and I'm having some issues with it.
    I played one of the videos stored in my phone, now it won't let me play any videos, it prompts me that " Device Media Processor is Busy"...
    Also I noticed tonight that I have no sounds for incoming calls, texts, etc...I went in to try and "change the ringtones and it keeps telling me "Invalid Ringtone Selected, Please make Another Selection". But the thing is, is that these are the ringtones the phone is equipped with?!?! Has anyone seen this before or have any solutions?

  • New issue with iPod update 1.2

    So I just got off the phone with applecare and the guy said that with all the issues that have just come up with the ipod and 1.2, this one he hasn't heard of. Any of you have it? here's the issue:
    When the ipod (5 gen 30G) is turned on the screen "scrolls" like a ticker screen in times square in New York. The whole screen shifts from right to left. Sometimes all the horizontal lines of pixels don't scroll all together and it results in a "smeared" look making it unreadable. If the lock is on, it stops. If I scroll the wheel clockwise or counterclockwise the whole screen "scrolls" right to left faster. The faster I spin the wheel, the faster the screen moves. Tried everything with applecare and they can't get it to stop. It occurred IMMEDIATELY after installing the 1.2 update. (as a matter of fact while it was resyncing the red circle with the line thru it started moving across the screen).
    Anyone else encounter this?
    Tom

    Try doing a restore, and if that doesn't work, you may need to return/exchange it.

  • Start up issue with Tiger G3 Ibook

    I'm running a 800mhz (I think... I know it's no more than that) G3 with the latest update to Tiger (as far as the hubby remembers...) and he had to force quit Firefox (latest update as well), and then restart the comp. During restart, the gray screen with the apple logo would appear, then the screen would go black (but still on) and nothing. He'd have a mouse...but that's it.
    We do not have the start up disk for Tiger because we bought the comp off of ebay, and the seller didn't provide the tiger disk. We've had the comp for about 6 months or so with no problems at all; it's been awesome.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi, Stephie. to Apple Discussions.
    Try adjusting the angle of the display. Does that make the display come back for you?
    If not, try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
    If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say? If it says "Verified," you should be in good shape, as far as the hard drive is concerned, at least.
    Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
    See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.
    If this doesn't work, you are probably going to have to buy the retail version of Tiger in order to maintain the hard drive. Did the seller include the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?

  • New Imac with Tiger want Leopard and ILife without waiting

    I just got a new IMac for Christmas but it has Tiger on the hard drive and in the box. (Last time I buy hardware from Amazon). I do have a full Leopard install disc I used on my Laptop. Can I use this while I wait for my free Leopard upgrade to come or is this breaking the user agreement? Secondly if I do a clean install when I get Leopard how do I get ILife back onto the IMac without buying it again?(since it came pre- installed)?

  • New issues with 1.5 FlashOnly and more

    Hi,
    I have a project that creates a SWC library, which I reference from several flash projects.   This all works great when I used the 1.4 lccsFlash library - compile in Flash Builder 4.5.  If I simply replace the 1.4 library with the 1.5 lccsFlash library.  It seems to build OK, but when I use the resulting library it generates the following error:
    [Player: WIN 10.2.153.2]
    VerifyError: Error #1053: Illegal override of recordMessages in com.adobe.rtc.session.managers.SessionManagerFMS.
    I am not using the recordMessages - the LCCS related code simply creates an P2P audio.
    That's issue #1.  Issue 2 relates to my reasons for switching to the LCCS 1.5 API.  I have a couple applications - different code bases that worked a couple weeks ago when that used the UserEvent.USER_CREATE and UserEvent.USER_REMOVE events to detect user's entering and leaving P2P audio conversations handled in rooms.  This all worked fine.  Today, in testing the same applications, I am not receiving these events consistently.  Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.  There have been no changes to the LCCS code in the past two weeks - so I'm stumped.
    My thought is that maybe some server-side changes occurred to suport version 1.5 of the API, so that's what led me down the upgrade path.  Unfortunately, that's when I ran into the VerifyError.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated - I don't need to upgrade as much as I need to get the UserEvents working properly.
    Thanks!

    I've tested the following code in Flash CS5 and Flash CS5.5 with both the Flash 10 and Flash 10.1 swcs from version 1.4 with publish settings for Flash 10 and 10.2.  In this case, the code resides right in the FLA timeline frame 1.  I see similar results from my swc library.  In this case, I connect to an LCCS room, subscribe and publish.  Then I start a timer for 15 seconds - at the end of 15 seconds, I disconnect (stop the subscriber, publisher, etc.).  I've highlighted the trouble area in red, i.e. I stop the publisher, but the STREAM DELETE event is never received and the user is still publishing to the room after the stop call.  In the original post, I mentioned the USER_CREATE and USER_REMOVE not working, but I believe the real issue is that the publisher is not stopping properly and issues compound when trying to log into a different LCCS room.
    I've also included the debug output from code execution in Flash below the code.  This shows Flash Player version 10.1.52.14, but I've tried it with FP 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3 - still the same results.

  • New issue with ACD 30"

    Hey guys,
    I've been looking around and I've seen a lot of threads about this similar issue but not found a solution to it . Rather than chiming in with those however I'm starting a separate thread because I believe my experiences are slightly different to what others have seen .
    I have a 13" MacBook Pro, 2009 I believe and a 30" ACD - both bought new this year around 6 months ago and have both up until now been performing wonderfully . Most of the time I have the ACD connected to my PC as that is what I do the majority of my work on but when I have editing to do in FinalCut I switch over to this MBP and hook it up to the monitor via the dual-link dvi/mini-dv thing . As I say, has been working fine until now at the 30" ACD's native resolution .
    The monitor is now exhibiting the blinking black state that others experience, occasional graphical corruption and green patterns along the lower third of the screen . Interestingly this only happens at resolutions that are not 1280x800, the native resolution of this MBP - it remains completely stable at this resolution with no blinking or green patterns . Anything higher or lower causes it to freak out .
    If I connect the display back up to my PC, it again resumes working fine and stable at its native resolution .
    If anyone has any clues or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it !

  • New issue with blank frame at end of coverted .avi

    Here is the project (scenario details):
    I have 2 .swf files. Both are 30 fps. Call them "chapter1" and "chapter2". Frame count is 3600 and 9600 respectfully. The last frame of "chapter1" contains the same image as the first frame of "chapter2" - basically I'm splitting up an overall animation so I can easier manage two Flash documents versus one large document. I used SoThink SWF Converter to create 2 .avi files. When I place these .avi files back to back on the same timeline in Encore, both .avi files have an extra blank frame at the end. This causes a black frame flicker between the end of "chapter1" and the beginning of "chapter2". Even if I drag the end of the .avi on the timeline to the left (as to trim the video track), I still see a black, empty frame at the end. I don't think the problem is with SoThink because I've even imported these .avi files into Sony Vegas and zoomed in all the way to the end of each video track and the very last frame of both files is as it should be. This leads me to believe the issue is with Encore somewhere. Also, initially the problem in Encore was the audio tracks were extending a few frames beyond the video track thus causing the back to back .avi files to align according to the audio track (which was leaving a few blank frames from the video track). I have included some screen shots of the last 3 frames of "chapter1" and the first frame of "chapter2". Hopefully the images below appear in progression as I attached them. Watch the timeline indicator. One frame before the end of "chapter1" is black. I've run out of troubleshooting ideas. I can't imagine this would have anything to do with the .swf being 30 fps and the Encore timeline being DV NTSC 29.97 fps.

    Stan - thanks for the reply...
    I don't recall what was covered when you posted the similar question earlier:
    Not much more than me explaining the flicker between 2 .avi files, and the only response was someone telling me to just have one .swf file. I'm not sure why some people's response is to "just do it a different way" instead of trying to figure out what is causing the issue.
    What does mediainfo or gspot show about the avis?
    I'm not sure which information you need, but I will attach what I was able to get out of the problematic .avi. Let me know if you need different information. This was the first time I used MediaInfo.
    Without knowing what to look for, I did notice a couple of lines that caught my eye. Line 25 mentions 30 fps frame rate (which I imagine is this .avi). Line 26 mentions 25 fps as the original fps (which makes me wonder if SoThink misread the .swf file as 25 fps instead of 30 fps) - not sure if I'm reading this right. Also, lines 45 & 52 mention a 26ms delay in audio (relative to video). Could that be why the audio track in Encore extends a couple of frames beyond the video track? Either way, Vegas is STILL showing the last frame as filled with the image. What does this report tell you? Maybe I should find a different way to export .swf to video. Is there anything else out there I might try (to see if the problem is SoThink)? Just looked at the .avi in PremierePro. The last frame looks fine. SoThink won't let me convert .avi to 29.97 fps.
    Could the fact I have a 30 fps .avi placed into a 29.97 fps project timeline, could this be the issue? I tested another .avi (from a movie), and the last frame appears correctly in Encore. Now this looks as if the issue is back to SoThink's conversion to 30 fps. I really should find a different .swf to video converter and retest. Again, thanks for any help (from anyone) in this and suggesting alternative video converters.
    *added - the .swf files contain tweened and frame by frame animation along with a streamed audio layer, but even when I completely remove the audio layer, the resulting .avi still shows up as a blank frame at the end. I thought at one point the fact I had a streaming layer of audio might have been forcing the frames in Flash to skip around, but this wasn't the case.

  • Very new, issue with applets not loading

    Hello, thanks in advance for any assistance provided.
    I am having trouble getting any applet that I create to run in my browser. I have tried using both Netbeans and Eclipse as the IDE. Most of my testing is in a .htm file on my desktop pointing to a .class file also on my desktop, but I have also tried hosting both of them on a webpage with the same results.
    The HTML I'm using is
    <HTML>
    <HEAD><TITLE>
    HTML Test Page
    </TITLE></HEAD>
    <BODY>
    Test
    <HR>
    <applet code="HelloWorld.class" width="420" height="210">
    </applet>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>The code in the .class file is from http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/applet/getStarted.html :
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import java.awt.Graphics;
    public class HelloWorld extends JApplet {
        public void paint(Graphics g) {
         g.drawRect(0, 0,
                 getSize().width - 1,
                 getSize().height - 1);
            g.drawString("Hello world!", 5, 15);
        }The error message I get in my browser is
    java.lang.ClassCastException: HelloWorld cannot be cast to java.applet.Applet
         at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source)
         at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source)
         at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
    Exception: java.lang.ClassCastException: HelloWorld cannot be cast to java.applet.Applet
    Can anyone explain what I'm doing wrong in terms a java noob could understand? Thanks alot.

    Even though I tried that multiple times before, it seems to be working now. I think my issue must lie with me being confused by what I'm supposed to name the package and the main class and all that. Thanks Paul.
