New iTunes 9 folder organization left many files untouched

So I ran the new iTunes 9 "organize library" command. And it created folders labels "Podcasts", "Movies", "Music", "Audiobooks", etc. And it moved and sorted most of my 220GB of files into the correct folders.
But it also left about 250 folders of music completely untouched. Why didn't it put them into the correct media folder?

Oh, I think I just figured it out. I tried importing the songs that were left behind (e.g., the stragglers that weren't filed into the iTunes Media Organization folders) and they didn't import. Instead, iTunes put them into a "Not Imported" folder. When I tried to play them, they wouldn't play. So I guess they are corrupt files or otherwise unplayable. Makes sense that iTunes wouldn't import them into the iTunes Media Organization scheme.

I need to know how to fix this. I updated itunes and it created a new itunes folder on my hard drive after I ported all of it to an external for space concerns. It took all my files from that folder and recreated part of it to my hard drive. Now when backing up I have no idea where it is backing up to. Any help appreciated

Sort of. My media was on multiple hard drives, some local, and actually some networked, and then I conolidated it to a single external hard drive. Renaming drives and moving files sounds like a recipe for disaster.
When doing a consolidation, files are copied to a new location and the old ones are left untouched. Does iTunes create a backup database of the file locations before doing a consolidation? I could use the backup if that were the case, since everything still exists in the original locations.
I've recieved my replacement hard drive for the one that crashed and I may be able to copy everything back manually if I knew where it went. I looked inside the iTunes Music Library.xml to see if I could figure out the folder structure, but for some reason they all say they're located in the iTunes folder in My Documents. They're not, of course.
Would the Previous iTunes Library.itl be of any use, or is that for another purpose?

  • What is causing this?  The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged) 4".  This happens everytime I start iTunes lateley.  Help!!!

Everytime I open iTunes lately...I get all my music thrown out of the library and this annoying message come up...The file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged) 4”.  Is this how an apple works?  It doesn't?  Why all of a sudden is it doing this?  Please help.  Thank you.

Did you happen to bring this iTunes library over from a windows machine? You might read this kb article to see if it helps http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451

  • Why has this occurred The file "iTunes Library.itl" does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged)".

My itunes library suddenly that the file “iTunes Library.itl” does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has created a new iTunes library and renamed this file to “iTunes Library (Damaged)”. I use an external hard drive for my Itunes.

The library file appears to have been corrupted.  You say you use your external drive but is the whole library on it or only your media?  No matter, you will have to rebuild the library file:

  • New iTunes folder on external drive...move xml file there?

About a year ago, I created a new folder on an external hard drive and I thought that I followed the apple designated steps to move my itunes music to that folder.  I then selected the advanced tab in preferences in iTunes and selected the new folder on my external drive as my "iTunes" folder.  iTunes seems to have worked OK for this past year using the folder on the external drive.  After updating to the latest version of iTunes (11.1.1), I tried to sync some apps to my iPhone 4, and I got the message that the external drive folder I am using as my "iTunes" folder on the external drive is not the one associated with my iPhone.  iTunes asks if I want to erase my iPhone and use the contents of my external drive folder on my phone.  This is the first time I have seen this message, even though it has been a year, and I have connected my phone to iTunes during that time.
In investigating this, I see that the .xml and .its files are not in the folder on the external hard drive.  In fact, there is no folder at all called "iTunes" on my external drive. They are still in the "iTunes" folder in my music folder on my internal hard drive.  This is what is still in the music folder in my home folder on my internal drive:
Should I manually move the .xml, the .ita and the other files into the folder on the external drive?
    Thanks

In my message above, I tried to include a .png file of what my internal hard drive has in the music folder, but that did not work, so I am trying to paste it in here.  I am wondering if I should manually copy these files to the music folder on my external hard drive.  There is no folder on my external drive names "iTunes".

  • Backed up iTunes folder, need to add files to new installation. How to?

    Hi all,
Basically my Mac HD had some problems which forced me to backup by copying the entire iTunes folder as found in username/Library/ and save to disk.
I am now back up and running with a fresh installation of Leopard and would like to re-add all of my music and other data, as it was on my previous install.
Which of the files out of the iTunes folder do I need to copy over, and will it be a smooth transition?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Move the entire iTunes folder back into the Music folder of your home folder. If you erased the hard disk and backed up the iTunes folder in the Library folder but not the copy in the Music folder, your iTunes library has been erased and needs to be reimported or redownloaded.

  • How do I create a new iTunes folder?

After moving backwards and forwards between Mac and PC, different format hard drvies and versions of iTunes (I recently "downgraded" back to iTunes 10.7) my music folder is in complete chaos. There are duplicate files, folders all over the place and deleting music from iTunes doesn't remove their folders. I'm wanting to have a huge clear out and basically rebuild my library and the folder itself from scratch, but I'm having trouble doing so.
Currently my iTunes folder is on a FAT32 partition on an external hard drive and what I would like to do is create a new, "empty" iTunes folder on the NTFS partition, then pick and choose which mp3s to copy across, leaving behind all the stuff I don't want to be deleted once I'm done. I tried doing this by making a new library, but all the actual mp3s are still being kept in the same place. Basically I want iTunes to ignore the folder that already exists long enough for me to copy the stuff I want to a new one. The best way I can describe it is that if you were to install iTunes on a new PC, it would create a folder without any actual music in it, then you could drag and drop mp3s from your old folder into iTunes itself, filling the folder up.
I hope this makes sense to somebody who can help me out, thanks!

assuming iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s):
connect your iDevices (one after the other) and right-click or control-click them in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
above will cover your purchases. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.
when done, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point iTunes media folder location to the new external. on the same tab, ensure the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked.
next, go file > library > organize library > consolidate files.

  • I just changed the OS from Vista to Windows7.  I have a folder on the same computer with the old iTunes library.  I installed a new version of iTunes from scratch.  How do I move my music library, etc from that backed up folder into the new iTunes folder.

I need help with moving my music library.
I recently upgraded the OS on my computer from Vista to Windows7.
During the process it copied my iTunes library to a folder on this same computer (marked it Windows.old)
Once the OS was done, I installed a new copy of iTunes on the Windows7 but it now has a blank library (folder)
How do I move my music from its current folder location (on this same computer) into the new iTunes library folder ???
There don't seem to be specific instructions on how to do this.

My situation may be different from yours since all mu music is ripped from cd's not bought from iTunes, but I would think the premise is the same.
Doesn't matter what is in your library.
When I moved computers I literally dragged and dropped the music where I wanted it to be. THen when I opened iTunes I imported the files back into iTUnes
This creates a new library with all the same items but you lose a lot of info: Ratings, comments, date added, custom EQ, playlists, etc.
If you simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder, it is the exact same library, not a new library. No info is lost.

  • Moving a Folder from the iTunes Folder to My Own File Structure

I'm trying to move a folder from the default iTunes folder to a folder on another drive where I am managing the file structure. This allows me to file music as I would like to on the disk an makes things much easier to find when I need to.
Recently I've noticed that when I do this I lose some of the song meta data such as the image and rating which is kind of annoying. Is there any way to do this and not lose meta data?

If the external drive is in NTFS format (which is how most new drives are shipped), the Mac can't write to it. Reformat it with Disk Utility, putting it into Mac OS Extended format.

  • ITuned 9 "automatically add to itunes" folder does not add files

Help! I am new to iTunes 9, just built a Win 7 HTPC works well but now wanting to add all of my music to iTunes. Have approx 7k songs in iTunes but when I drop any other folders into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder created by iTunes it does nothing with the files. They are not added to the library, they are not moved or deleted.
It makes no difference if I re-start iTunes or if I give the application Administrator privilages. Help / ideas please...

I too, have an external drive and it works for me.
The "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder should be in the "iTunes Media" folder on your Music drive. I created a shortcut to this folder and put it on my desktop. I can drag mp3's to this shortcut and they get added to iTunes.
Check your iTunes Advanced Preferences. The "iTunes Media folder location" should be "/Volumes/Music/iTunes Media". You *may* have to check "Keep iTunes Media folder organized".

  • New Itunes can not find library file

After comuper crash and new hard drive, I downloaded current version of Itunes. Error message is can not find itunes Library.itl. Any suggestions?

Did you restore your iTunes folder and all its contents from a backup?  The library.itl file contains all the references itunes needs to where your media files are located, playlists etc.  Without the old copy and without the media files you are basically starting brand new.

There are about 3000 files and the folder is a server.
Well, that would certainly do it, especially since you said it's on a server, hence a network drive.
In this case i was looking for a progress for the List Folder to use that in a progress indicator for the user.
Unfortunately, there is no built-in mechanism for this. Perhaps you can organize the files in such a way that you can get a list of them in "chunks", based on some search pattern. Or perhaps you can organize them in folders so that you dynamically populate the subfolders when a user wants to see what's inside.
Aside: having 3000+ files in a folder is a poor way to orgranize files, especially on a server, as this leads to a massive amount of file I/O and network I/O burden on the server.

  • New iTunes wont access my music files on my external HD

ive tried using the file path on iTunes advanced settings and still no music

will itunes reference the songs on the external drive without importing them?
Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and tell iTunes not to copy them to the iTunes Music folder; once done, drag them into the open iTunes window. Alternatively, you can change the iTunes library location to the external drive.

  • New Itunes update "can not locate file" for music videos

Every music video I have ever purchased is gone!  WHat the heck happened?  Everything I have purchased before the recent 10... update is no longer in my library.  The vidoes are still on the devices (IPad, Iphone, and Itouch) but not in the library.  I have tried to transfer purchase from these devices and the videos do not transfer.  The two videos purchased after the update are the only ones there our 100+ videos and movies.  Anyone have any ideas?  IMy computer is a WIndows 7 64bit based operating system.

    I don't think I understand you.
In iTunes, are you looking for your music under Library> Music, in the left bar?
You can't play music from your iPad thru iTunes. If you select your iPad in iTunes, then click the disclosure triangle, then select, say a playlist, the contents of that playlist will show up in the main window, but will be displayed grey and can't be double-clicked to play. So I don't understand what you mean.
On the iTunes Summary page for your iPad, do you have Manually manage music and videos checked on?
