New iTunes won't let me update iPod version 4.2

It's rediclious! It says "backing up iPod" for 6 HOURS or more and never goes anywhere. Is this a glitch?? it definitly needs fixing. All the stuff i'm using requires the update and it won't work. Any advice?

Ya, Clinton's suggestion was it - i installed both packages manually, and now can open iphoto and my mac says its at 10.8.2.
Whether future automatic OS updates will work or not is definitely a concern, but for now i'm happy
Thanks for your help! Clinton I'd love to give you more points but accidentially clicked the "helped" instead of "solved"...  if i can figure out how to reverse that I will.

  • ITunes won't let me update or restore my iPhone.

So, I got my new iPhone 4S (16GB, Unlocked) yesterday for Boxing Day (hooray!) and since that morning, I've been trying to set it up. Before I bough it, I was using my SIM Card with another phone, and so I had to 'convert' it to MicroSIM, since that's what the iPhone supports. I had the SIM Card with me, and inserted it in my iPhone to set it up, as was required. At first try it didn't recognize it, so I took it out to check if I placed it correctly, and, after I put it back in, everything was ok. I downloaded quite a few apps and have a 'latest' backup on iTunes and iCloud. This morning (27th) I took my SIM card out, so I could transfer my contacts from the old phone. After I copied them, I tried to put it back in, but it wouldn't recognize it. After figuring out I was experiencing the infamous 'No SIM Card Installed' error as described on article TS4148, I followed the instructions. I backed it up and restored it. iTunes did its thing, downloaded the latest version of the firmware by itself, and restored the iPhone. And here is where the problem is. I was expecting the phone to read the SIM card properly this time, but it didn't. I'm not sure it downloaded the right version (5.0.1 9A406), to be honest, as I lve in Cyprus. So, here I am with this factory-default iPhone that cannot get activated because it cannot read the SIM card, and not restored to a downloaded version of the latest&correct firmware, because iTunes will also not allow me to restore it again unless I activate it, which requires a SIM card. Note that in Cyprus we have no Apple Stores.
    Thanks for your time,
    George

An update: I tried manually entering Restore Mode with TinyUmbrella and then rstoring it from the IPSW I have downloaded, but for some reason it's not letting me because it's incompatible in some way. I've also tried using my SIM with my old phone and it won't recognize it. I guess the only thing I can do is follow deggie's suggestion and get a new MicroSIM. Thanks!

  • New ITunes won't let me upload runs

Quite simply, downloaded newest version and now when I sync my nano with new runs to upload, the runs never upload. I've tried unchecking the 'auto load to Nike+ website' and recheking and nothing. Any suggestions other than reinstalling the old version?

Recently I had experience the same problem, and I wrote to Nike+ the following message:"09/17/2009
Hi, after upgrading my iTunes to the latest version(9.0), my runs are not showing in the Nike+ web. I see the runs in iTunes, but they are not transferred to the web. Any known issues with this new version?
    Thanks"
They sent me a step-by-step guide and I finally uploaded my runs. Here it is. But still I have problems with Facebook (the problems started after updating to the new version of iTune),Facebook do not sync with Nike+ most of the time now.

    1) Dock your iPod nano. When iTunes opens go to the Nike + iTunes tab.
    2) Un-check the check box to "Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com" and click Apply.
    3) Safely un-dock your iPod nano.
    4) Go for a run or short test workout. Around the room is fine. Just enough to register a distance on the iPod nano.
    5) Dock your iPod nano, then select the check box to "Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com" and click Apply at the bottom-right of the screen.
    6) iTunes will make the connection to nikeplus.com and send the workout.
Note: At this point, the workout is not attached to your account.
    7) In iTunes, the button to "Visit nikeplus.com" should be displayed (you may be presented with a window to either "Visit" or "Don't Visit"). Click on Visit and your default internet browser should open and go to nikeplus.com.
    8) Your workout is visible, but it still is not attached to your nikeplus.com account. Log in to nikeplus.com and the workout will attach to your account.
    9) Close the browser window. It does not matter if you log out or not.
    10) Go back to iTunes and click on the button, "Visit nikeplus.com." Your web browser should open, but you can close it immediately.
    11) Go back to iTunes. Your email address should appear below the "Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com" check box and the options Cancel and Apply will appear. Click Apply to save this setting.
All future workouts will automatically upload to the appropriate nikeplus.com account".

  • ITunes won't let me download SD version of TV shows on my iPod Touch when I am a HD season pass holder

Hello, I have the 4th gen iPod Touch and I purchased the HD season pass for Supernatural Season 8 from iTunes on my computer. I downloaded the HD version of the Comic-Con 2012 Supernatural Panel, which was part of my season pass, to my computer. As an experiment, I wanted to see if I could directly download the SD version of it from iTunes on my iPod Touch. When I clicked the icon to download, it allowed me the choice of downloading SD or HD to my iPod Touch. Now, a week later, episode 1 is available and I downloaded the HD version to my computer but when I tried to download the SD version from iTunes on my iPod Touch, it automatically downloads the HD version without providing me the choice to get the SD version. Is there a glitch with my iPod Touch software or did an update happen that I wasn't aware of? I hope someone has encountered the same issue and knows a way to directly download the SD version from iTunes on the iPod Touch without having to sync with a computer. Thank you.

When I try to update my apps on iTunes, I get a message stating that "The item you tried to buy is no longer available." And then nothing. It doesn't update any of my apps.

I think I have to uninstall my iTunes but I'm afraid I will lose all my music...can anyone tell me how not to lose it all?

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the thingy):

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.

  • ITunes is not letting me update to version 5.0.1?

Yesterday I tried downloading an app from my iPhone 4 and it said that it requires iOS 4.3. I clicked the update button in iTunes (on my computer) and waited for a couple of minutes. After it was done, a messaged appeared on the screen and said, "There was a problem downloading the software for the iphone. The network connection timed out". I did some searching about this and it has something to do with my firewall. I managed to disable Kaspersky and updated my iPhone again. No joy

  • ITunes claims my 5th gen ipod has old software, but won't let me update

I have two ipods... one an old 3rd gen scroll wheel ipod that just seemed to go kaput... it wasn't showing up in the iTunes source list or on my desktop. So I followed some directions on the apple site to try to restore it:
    "Step 1
    Delete the file using Terminal
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
    Type: sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions/iPodDriver.kext
    Press Return.
Enter the administrator account password when prompted.
    Quit Terminal.
Restart the computer (From the Apple menu, choose Restart).
    Step 2
    Reinstall iTunes
Download the latest version of iTunes from the iTunes download page.
    Install iTunes.
Restart the computer after the installation has completed.
    Connect iPod.
    Step 3
    Delete the iPod.plist file
Remove the following file in the your home directory and launch the iPod updater again
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.ipod.plist"
Anyway none of this worked for my old ipod (I think it's dead) but here's my new problem. Since I did this I plugged in my new ipod, 5th gen black 60g, and I got an error message that said:
"Some of the items in the itunes library were not copied to the iPod "Honey" because your iPod software is too old. Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Update to get the latest iPod software update."
When I went to the Summary page the whole "Version" section is grayed out and it says "Your iPod is up to date."
What is going on and how can I fix it?

The 1G iPod can only go as high as 3.1.3. The 1G does not have an internal speaker or volume buttons on the upper left edge.

It depends on what iPhone you have.
If it's an iPhone 4S or earlier, click here.
If it's an iPhone 5, you need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and that requires an Intel Mac with at least 1GB RAM.

Syncing music via iTunes is only one way: from iTunes to your iPod.  If you need to copy the music from your iPod back to your PC, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to do this.

AFTER recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

how to update Ipad 2 from IOS 4.3.5 to IOS 5? Itunes won't let me do it because it keeps showing error messages asking me to check if my network is active.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.1.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 7.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.
     Cheers, Tom

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.
