New K8N diamond plus questions please help.

Hi all well i am new to this msi site and am thinking of buying the new MSI K8N Diamond plus motherboard, the problem i have is that i have been a fan of ASUS and have had there last 3 SLI motherboards of which i have not been happy with.
Well i am totaly into overclocking and have an Opteron 165, balistix ram, 600w Enermax PSU, 2x Gainward 6800gt's,
what i am looking for is a motherboard that does what i says it will do, yes the asus a8n32 was a great motherboard but has a limitation on the voltage if useing the new E4-E6 stepping cores of which would only give a max voltage of 1.58v of which the asus spec said 1.76v.
What i am asking you chaps is is this a great motherboard, can you play with all the coms settings without any limitation, or do you think that the DFI motherboard is better.
If you can let me have some info on this motherboard that would be great, as i can not seam to get any reply from MSI about some information.
what i am looking for is what is the max CPU voltage and is there any limitation on it for some chips.
what is the max voltage for the ram
what is the max voltage for the chipset.
any help on this would be great.

there is no mobo that alows 4V for the memory. i think the DFI goes up to 3.4V and you can use a DDR Booster to get to 3.8V. the only mobo that is capable to pass 3.3V is the DFI since you can have the choice to select from which rail the memory will be powered (the 3.3V or the 5V). you don't have that option in any other mobo.
Hi thanks for the mail but i have just copied this from msi about this motherboard, see below.
1.Adjust CPU FSB Frequency:
You can adjust the desired "CPU FSB Frequency" by using "+,-" key. The default value of AMD Athlon™64 is 200MHz. The maximum value is 450MHz.
2.AMD Overclocking Configuration (CPU Ratio):
If the CPU is Athlon™64 FX series, the ratio range is from 4 to 25.
If the CPU is Athlon™64 series, the ratio should be set according to its model number. For example, the ratio range of 3000+ is from 4 to 9, and the 3200+ is from 4 to 10.
3.Adjust Extra CPU Voltage:
This is for adjusting CPU voltage while overclocking. Following the CPU default value, the maximum is 1.8V. The interval is 0.05V.
4.Adjust DDR Memory frequency:
The Memclock is the major part which has four different frequencies to match many kinds overclocking memory modules. The memory frequency settings includes DRAM/FSB=1/2, 2/3, 5/6, 1/1.
5.DDR Memory Voltage:
This is for adjusting memory voltage while overclocking. K8N Diamond Plus has a special design. We use jump to distinguish two level arrangement of voltage. In this way it can get maximum 4.1V for overclocking modules. As you can see the below pictures, the left one is the standard mode when jump hat is located at the top postion. The default value is 2.5V, and the maximum is 3.2V. The interval is 0.05V. As the right one, it is overclocking mode when jump hat is located at the under postion. The default value is 3.2V, and the maximum is 4.1V. The interval is 0.05V.
What i am asking is there any limitation on the cpu voltage like the asus a8n32 as this had a max voltage of 1.58v due to it having a limit put on it by recomendation of amd.

  • K8N Diamond Plus Questions?

I have a some questions about my K8N Diamond Plus. I recently replaced a K8N Neo Nforce 3 board and some other parts as well. The machine has been working very well with this new board so far but there are a few issues I’d like to get resolved.
    1. Does anyone know if there is a new BIOS out for this board? I have that problem where at start up it shows that I have a new card in one of my PCI slots even though I do not….it does’nt seem to hurt the machine at all it’s just annoying….i’m wondering if they released a BIOS that corrected that?
    2. On my old board I overclocked the machine with no problems at all. Now I’m no expert at over clocking but I do like to dable a little and last time I did I had no problems. This board seems like it will over clock well so I went and got better RAM….i just received some Corsair XMS 2GB DDR 400. I went into the Cell Menu to look at the options for the RAM and saw much, much more then I had on my old Neo board.
I know I need to adjust the CAS Latency, RAS# to CAS# delay, Min RAS# Active Time and the Row Precharge Time for this RAM….people have been saying that their motherboards do not detect the correct timings for this RAM (2.5-3-3-6) so you need to adjust it Manually…along with uping the Voltage to 2.7.
My question is…..do I need to worry about any other options under the MCT Timing Mode besides the 4 I mentioned above? Also…I could’nt seem to adjust the Voltage for the RAM? Every time I high lighted it and hit enter nothing would pop up for me to adjust (and it is white not gray like some things are)….is there something I’m missing that I need to shut off in order to access it???
Thanks ahead of time for anyone that can provide me with some answers.

I have not been able to find any information on those other settings.  It is my current project and I am not having a great amount of success.
The defaults for them do not seam to have any adverse effect on stability the system in my signature is my MS-7220 system at FSB=225, CPU multiplier of 12, Memory/FSB =1/1 system is quite stabile if I am not playing with the BIOS settings.
I am working on, some major some minor these current problems.  Watch out for number three it will flat blow your BIOS Parameters.  It happens on my system every time, but I not been able to find any body that is will to trash the BIOS to verify it, so I can be sure it is a real BIOS problem or my system.  “MCP Timing Mode” use to do the same thing, that where the V1.16 BIOS version came form MSI Tech Support sent my that one to fix the problem and this one looks to be the same.
    1.   First boot screen the line “DRAM = 400 MHz, Dual-Channel.” It reads 400 MHz do matter what that actual memory transfer rate actually is.
    2.   Cell Menu parameter “Adjust DDR Voltage (V)”, has two problems (1) the BIOS default voltage is outside the manufacture specification for normal operating range.  BOIS default is 2.65V and manufacture states the Memory Module should be operated between 2.7V minimum and 2.9V maximum.  (2) The voltage cannot be set to the manufactures minimum voltage of 2.7V.  Starting with the BIOS default voltage of 2.65V and you press “+” key once and voltage jumps to 2.75V, press the “-“ key and the voltage jumps back to BIOS default of 2.65V.
    3.   Cell Menu>Memory Configuration>User Config Mode parameter, when set to “Manual” and all of the “User Config Mode” sub-parameters left at BIOS default.  The system will not boot.  When I say will not boot I mean Blank Screen, no beeps, no drive activity, just case and motherboard fans come on.
    4.   Menu “CPU Frequency Configuration”, parameter Adjust CPU VID.   CPU correct voltage tracks the set by about 0.03V high.  Example: if Adjust CPU VID to 1.375V and actual vCore voltage is about 1.405 Volts.  The offset is maintained through the voltage adjustment range of the current CPU.

  • MSI K8N Diamond Plus Question

Will the ThermalRight XP-90C Heatsink and 92mm fan work with this board?  Thermalright's web site does not say anyything but I can't help but wounder if it will fit with that fanless cooler on the MOBO.
    Thanks

Quote from: nanohead on 15-February-06, 00:23:59
I've got an XP-90 installed and there is plenty of room.   Plenty of airflow also.   I'm at a constant 31-36 celsius, so no worries on the CPU.  This cooler is large, I had it on an Asus A8V deluxe, an Abit AN8 SLI and now on the MSI K8N Diamond Plus, and its basically located on the same place regardless of mobo, so I wouldnt worry too much about it.
I did'nt mean that it has a massive effect on the temps, although comparing your rig to my last (AN8 Ultra, 3700 @ 2.7) my temps never went above 32'c idle and 44'c loaded!!
I meant that the airflow in my case struggles a little because the exhaust fan is right next to the hs and I cannot operate it the other way round due to my ram hs being so bloody large <damn you Corsair!!>
    Sorry if I caused confusion!!

  • K8N Diamond Plus , Need some help please

I have the Diamond Plus board and I seem to be having the same issues that most of the rest of you are.
Memory stuck at 333 , When I try to install a soundcard into a PCI slot I find that I now have a modem onboard!
A few other glitches that I am sure will be fixed soon.
Anyway can anyone tell me how I can get the new Beta bios for this board that some of you have? I have sent a
letter for help to MSI but it has been almost 3 days with no responce.
Is this normal? or should I wait more. Or can someone tell me how to get the bios , and if it will help me any at this time.
Anyway thanks all and I will be here more now that I have found this forum

    Sealance.
There are about three or four reasons for what I have done.
First, the reason for buying Diamond was not for gaming the only gaming I do not Spider when a waiting on the computer or the network.  System are for my personnel use and that I use them to how high of performance I can get out of them and there are use for my home automation system.  A lot of them end up in the hands of my grand kids.  Therefore, my primary goal on the system is hard drive throughput and data handling.  The nVidia Chipsets RAID Controller are poor, for one main reason and that is there are software driven, the RAID is a Service ran on the Main Processor.  Being software driven is the primary reason they are slow and second is the use up valuable Main Processor time.  Third, right now they will not work with the newest high speed SATA drives.  That means I use a third party RAID controller that is hardware driven.  The fastest third party RAID Controllers uses the PCI express bus.  As I am not using the system for gaming and do not use the second PCI-E x16 Graphics Card, which means I can use it for an PCI-E x4 RAID Controller Card.
Why is it in the secondary Graphics Card x16 slot?  (1) Placing the single Graphic Card in the Secondary Graphics card slot spreads the bigger heat generators out on the motherboard.  Using the Primary x16 slot for a Graphics Card puts the Processor, Memory, Northbridge Chip and Graphics in one small area of the this motherboard ( poor design, but you work with what you got.).  (2) This leaves the Primary x16 for use by the RAID Controller Card, which is low profile in proving ventilation for the Northbridge Chip.  The is a PCI-E x4 slot on the motherboard, but it only has to lays connected to it, if you wondering you I did not use it.  (3) The Primary x16 slot has the shortest Hyper Transport data path to memory, which I am hope will improve Hard Drive Bandwidth.
If there were anything else, you would like to know, or what I just said did not sense or would like more details just reply.

Yah I am torn now between sli'ing this 7800GT or just getting a 7900GTX...
Tough choice. Now Machbuster will witness another possible scenario.... instant obsolescene & not being able to count on buying a last gen card at a reduced price to fill a 2nd slot.
You might better get that 7800GT now TS... Looks like they're going bye-bye!
Check this.... When I was shopping for my 7800GT, NewEgg had 7 or 8 (or more) kinds of 7800GT's.
Now they're down to just these - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2010380048+1067917485&Submit=ENE&SubCategory=48
2 of those cards are the dual GPU 7800GT cards and out of the 2 regular 7800's, 1 is out of stock. So just 1 is available to order. And a quick look at zipzoomfly showed all 7800's on BO as well.
I personally would get a 7900GT & slap an aftermarket cooler on it & OC it, but if your budget will allow it, go for a GTX.

  • Help please Problem Raid K8N Diamond Plus

I have a PC with mather board K8N Diamond Plus 2HD maxtor 80gb (6V080E0) sata II. You can help me I am becoming crazy I must mistake in the bios or in the raid, I just do not succeed to install windows on 2 HD Sata II are compatibility problems?
    Thank

    Welcome!!
Firstly, may I suggest you give as much system information as possible, this will help us to assist!!
Second, I recently set up my RAID 0 and had an XP installation problem, but I believe mine was caused by my motherboard not liking the new 1.2BIOS.
As soon as I went back to the default (1.0) BIOS, no probs!

  • K8N Diamond Plus- bios freeze & question about temp/voltage monitor

A weird issue I had right after I setup my mobo last night was that I could not access the "PC Health" portion of the bios.  If I tried selecting it, it would just freeze.  Is this a known issue?  I'm hoping a bios update may solve this one.  Does anyone know anything about this?

Well I was mostly just asking if this was a known issue, so I guess "no" is all the answer I need...  Now, what would be my best solution?  I am assuming bios update, is there anything else that I should consider?
But if it helps, as I said its a brand new build, so I'm running the default bios. 1.00.  My other components are:  Silverstone Zeus 560w, 2GB of G.Skill pc4000, Raptor 74gb, 7900gtx, Opteron 165.
Also, since my other thread was locked (I figured seperating two different topics would make it easier for people to respond to specific questions, I apologize,) here's my other question pasted:
"I just set up my new system with this motherboard (K8N Diamond Plus,) an Opteron 165, Scythe Mine heatsink, and a Silverstone Zeus 560w. Its these components that lead to my question-
I am getting temps of about 31C idle, 41C load.  Nice temps yes, but I'm not sure how accurate those are.  That means that it is idling at 86F in a room that was probably in the high 70's, maybe 80.  Seems a little too good to be true, but then again, I am used to Intel's furnace-like temps
Its the voltage reading that has me a bit more concerned though.  Corecenter is reading my +5v as 5.36v, and my +12v as 12.28v.  The +3.3v is reading about spot-on at 3.33v.  I'm hoping that someone else who has this motherboard can tell me this- are the readings in Corecenter for this motherboard generally accurate, and should I be concerned about this?"
Thanks for any help you can give.  No sig yet because I just registered an hour ago, I'll work on it.

  • K8N DIAMOND PLUS RAID 0+1 Question

I have K8N Diamond Plus due tomorrow as the base for the new system I am building.  In addition I have 4 Western Digital 320GB SATA drives with 16MB buffers on the way to serve as my storage.  My question is this, I would like to set the drives up in a bootable RAID 0+1 array.  In fact I would like to have the ability to multi-boot from the array.  Is this possible?  If so, it would be greatly appreciated to hear recommendations on partioning the array.  I would like to dual boot for sure and possibly add a third OS.
    Thank you in advance,
    --Sarge

like syar said, it will show up just as one harddrive on your machine. that means that you can do with it whatever you are able to do with 1 harddrive: partition, multi-boot etc. since this is your first 0+1 array, i wish you good luck. you're gonna have fun with it, i know i did with my first array (took me 4 hours to figure out what's what, but hey, there wasn't any MSI forum at that time  )

  • K8N Diamond plus!!! Help onboard sound

Hello, I have seem many posts about the onboard sound blaster and this board.  I have a slightly different story.
I am one of the many who have VERY low volume on my onboard sound blaster audio. I read about needing a -5V rail and some other posts, but i decided to just buy a PCI version of the card instead.   Well i plugged the card in, Removed the old audio drivers and installed the PCI sound blaster card...and guess what, I STILL HAVE LOW VOLUME!!!!!  WHat does this mean?  Is the power supply screwing with both audio devices? Is it the motherboard??? DRIVERS?? HELP!!!
I upgraded my bios using the latest version in LIVE update and all drivers are updated with live update.
I have NO front audio hooked up and i tried new jumpers on the audio pins with no help.
ALSO... whenever i plug in my Plantronic USB headset....the system will use them one time and never again unless i system restore!!

  • I need help DDR voltage and latencies (K8N Diamond Plus)

I noticed my DDR voltage was incorrect in the bios and I don't know what "Auto" is doing with my timings. I have 2GB of Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2 DDR400 Memory installed on DIMM1 and DIMM2 of my K8N Diamond Plus board.
So far I've made the following changes (as my RAM's specs indicate) in the BIOS but I'm new to this (first build).
    DDR Voltage 2.75V
    CAS  2.0
    tRCD 3
    tRP   3
    tRAS 6
I left everything else at it's default setting. Are there any other changes I should make?

I'm having an issue with the 1.10 BIOS that is preventing me from manualy setting the timings...The problem I'm having right now is deciding what BIOS to install and where to download it. Perhaps you could help me with that?
With pleasure!  I had the same problem with the v1.10 BIOS, as did another member here.  I flashed BACK to the v1.0 BIOS (make sure to use the command line switched (just run the batch file)) and was able to set timings, and then I flashed directly to the 3.0A BIOS and was able to adjust timings still.  See my old thread here.
For my success (I don't know if any or all of these influenced it, but I'm just happy it works) in flashing I did the following:
Download the 1.0 (original) and 3.0A (latest "official") BIOS images from MSI's support site.
Downloaded the DrDos BIOS flash bootable ISO CD image from bootdisk.com
Used my ISO software to add the BIOS image files onto the ISO image.
    Burned the ISO to CD.
    Booted from the CD
    Flashed to 1.0
Cut Power (flipped PSU switch in back), held down the CMOS reset switch button on the mobo and the power button for 45 seconds.
Powered up, set "Optimized Defaults" and set memory voltage to 2.75v and rebooted.
Set all "normal" BIOS parameters (boot devices, et al).
Windows (x64) loaded with no issues, Everest reported timings appropriately
Did the same procedure for the 3.0A BIOS, with similar success.
You can see my post or click on the link in my sig for detailed memory reports.

Are you running just one set of TWINX2048-3200C2's?
Just one pair.  I fiddled with the CR and the only result was with the single known good DIMM my latency got slightly slower (like a 5ns drop), but still no love with 2 DIMMS.  I think it is just dead.  But this is not my story (at least not in this thread)...this is memticvirus's story.

What does it mean if it has a short...
There is a 12 Vatx Connecter on my motherboard with 8 pin, but on my power supply theres only four, i've connected it anyway, and it fits in, on the half of the connector.
    Could that be the problem?
I use the same type of connectors, no need for converters.
I too have only 4 pins out of the 8 on the board connected, no problem at all....
    And yes I do overclock
    But big chance it's the PSU that can't cope, it has only 14A @ 12V1 & 18A @ 12V....not very much for a 500W....
Also, try to boot with just 1 stick of memory in slot 1.

  • K8N Diamond Plus, SLI and Creative X-Fi cards, anyone running similar?

    Hi there!
I've got an ASUS A8N32-SLI board and my X-Fi card does not work with it, nor does it for many other people with similar setups.
    See here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=31426
    and here:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=26289
I get crackling and popping noises when running most games, e.g. BF2, Fear, FarCry.  When my 2x7800GTX's are in SLI mode it crackles loads, e.g. start far cry, click options, and listen.  When i disable SLI mode it crackles less, but it still crackles.  Many others encounter similar issues with their systems that are not identical but the symptoms are similar - high load = crackling/popping.
    My question is:
Is anyone here sucessfully running any X-Fi card (music, fatality, elite pro, etc) with 2x video cards and NO crackling/popping in BF2, FEAR and FarCry?
I've already had a replacement X-Fi card from creative which their tech guy said "should" fix it, lol, I'm wondering wether to replace my A8N32-SLI with an K8N Diamond Plus to fix the problem.  Besides, the MSI board has better PCI slot location and works with nTune too unlike the ASUS board.

    What's going on guys.
I hate to see peep's having soooo many prob's and it sucks major BALLZ. The reason why I'm reposting is that I encountered a new issue. Not with my rig, but a friend's.
We pretty much have the same setup. Differences are he's using 2GB of Corsair DDR400 (which is picking up as DDR333 as well), different branded video cards (I'm running two EVGA 7800GT's in SLi, he's running two BFG 7800GT's in SLi), XFi Platinum (me, Fatality Edition) and he's got a dedicated ITE RAID PCI card for his RAID from his previous rig. Configured his BIOS pretty much the same way I have it running (he wanted to Overclock his AMD x2 4400+ to 2.6 GHz), but when it came to installing Windows we kept getting BSOD's during installation. Looked over things numerous times and it didn't make sense. We resetted the BIOS to default settings and Windows went through without a hitch. We tried OC'ing it one more time and Windows was fine. But, when he installed and ran Quake 4, either Windows or the game would just lock up. He booted back into the BIOS and put the CPU back at stock frequency of 2.2 GHz. Game ran flawlessly afterwards. That points at the processor. The only differences were we both have different stock fans and his CPU was manufactured in July '05. Mine in Sept '05. His rig also reports the infamous "Phantom" PCI modem as well.
Quake 4 is the only game he's got installed so far, but he reports everything is set to their highest qualities, including resolution. He said it runs great with no anomalies. He's going to install Dawn of War and Winter Assault later I know.
Me? I haven't run into any issues with any games either, including F.E.A.R. as Hydrasworld asked. Both of our sound cards are in the Communication PCI Slot of the motherboard. My take on the OC issue is since we're using different proc's from different wafers, maybe my chip had revisions in September that the July proc my friend has didn't. Also, his heatsink has one less copper pipe I noticed. I'll still drop by for help. Good luck to you all and the only other thing I can add is try using the latest drivers for each piece of hardware you've got.
    LPB
P.S. If you can and you purchased a retail version of the processor, on one of the sides of the carton insert for the processor, a date should be printed. Maybe that can explain some issues. Once more, my proc was manufactured September 15th, 2005.
