New k8n neo platinum w/ long beeps on post

I just bought a new mobo and processor and when I get it to boot it just posts long beeps.
I started out with mem in all 3 slots - got long beeps
pulled mem out of slot 2 and 3 - got long beeps
unplugged power and plugged back in - system dead
moved mem in slot 1 to slot 2 - got long beeps
unplugged power and plugged back in - system dead
moved mem from slot 2 to slot 3 - got long beeps
unplugged power and plugged back in - system dead

moved mem from slot 3 to slot 1 - got long beeps
It seems that I have to change the mem config for the box to even power up....
I pulled the video card also with same results.
The mobo is a k8n neo nvidia nforce 3 250gb
the processor is amd 64 socket 754 3000+
the memory is IBM 33L5039 1gb pc2100 CL2.5 2.5V DDR ECC (it also has a Samsung tag on it that says Korea H 0405 PC2100R -25331-NO M312L2828ETO-CBO 1GB DDR PC2100 CL2.5 ECC)
The power supply is an Intel ATX 12v AMD Recommended that ouputs 400w max
power chart reads:

Anyone have an idea what could be wrong or where I can find an answer.

Hi gotmud,
I think you  may find your a little underpowered with your PSU.
What graphics card & drives have you plugged in.
See Basic Building Tips - Quote
As this pertains to A64's make sure that you have a power supply that is either approved for use by MSI/AMD or that you have plenty of amps on the 12 volt rail. Typically we have noted many issues based on stability with PSU's being rated at less than 24A on the 12v rail.
Until you get a stable system it would be best to work with just 1 memory module in slot 1

  • K8N Neo platinum edition, only beeps

    I have had my K8N Neo (7030)for about 1,5 years and its been working good. Today however, when I restarted my computer it only started to make beeps, about 1 sec long and maybe 4 seconds in between, all of the same length(they never stop). I have tried to move the memory dims ( have two 512 MB), in different positions and only using one (tried both), but nothing seems to be working.
    The last thing I did before the restart was in the BIOS, and I chose "optimized" at an item in the "overclocking menu". This was not an item with a warning.
    can anyone help?? any ideas? I have none at the moment or links to other with similar problems.

    Not so fast...
    I thought it was working ok since I got all the way to the BIOS.. But it kept on crashing, just freezing within 2 minutes from when I started it, no inputs worked, not mouse or keyboard.
    Now, after I tried to start it several times, it just turns itself off again without any sound at all. Tried to reset the CMOS once more, but to no help. Any ideas?

    I am trying to find the thread that was moved to the BIOS section? Can't find it.
    I've been really lucky with this OCing and putting stuff together. I'm self taught and 45. I got burnt in 1999 with a compaq presario 500mhz. I'm very poor and started reading. I did have a MSI board but can't remember what it was. Never used the new MB. OOOHHH... I just found the disk. It was a MSI M6340M.
    Thanks for the help so far and in the future. I am really tired of OC'ing the 2600+ mobile. Have I made it to the 64 group!?

  • NEW K8N Neo Platinum BIOS *OFFICIAL*

    Version 1.6 is out. get it while its hot! Doesn't look like anything major....but hell I always give it a try.
    1. This is Award BIOS release.
    2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:
    - Update CPU ID.
    3. 2005/03/10
    Update: I flashed my BIOS and everything is running great. Temps are about the same or Maybe SLIGHTLY lower with my 3200+ clawhammer. I turned back on agressive timings because it was giving me bluescreens before to see if it will work now. So far....RUNNING GREAT. I don't OC(college) so somebody else can report on that.

    When are they ever gonna sort out the bios for maxtor diamond max 10 16 meg cache ncq drives i got 2 of them and i need something done, i cannot be the only ser having troubles with, this board and maxtor ncq drives, what makes it worse it=s both these drives are showing signs of being damaged now. The 300 gig is making some rather strange noises, linke a pinking sound every couple of seconds, until i fromat it again, and now the 250 gig, J partition is freezing, locking, crappy performance issues, and i cannot format it using windows, it starts, but locks at about 75% busy scanning for bad sectors now, and i expect this to stick@75% as well, surely both hardd drives cannot be broken, from 2 different copanies, its the board killing them.
    MSI get your RRRRSSS ito gear and test these max 10 ncq drives with your hardware, then actually do something to make them work, for gods sake they are just hard drives, and on a side note, if anyone from maxtor ever views this, or if your thinking about buying a maxtor drive, answer my emails you morons. Go back to school and learn to read, then you could reply to the emails. MAxtor support sucks.
    somehow, I doubt the motherboard, which is only attached via a IDE cable, is causing your drives to destroy themselves.

  • K8N Neo Platinum suggestions

    I look at the specifications of the new K8N Neo Platinum. Here is a list of what I would like to be added to it:
    1. Second LAN controller (on the PCI bus) 10/100/1000 or at least 10/100. It looks as the board is already designed that way, it is just not soldered to it.
    most important is 1. !
    maybe only 8. is near it.
    2. Remove FireWire (I doubt that this will be popular with other users )
    3. Remove SuperI/O chip (Floppy, PS/2 keyboard&mouse, COM, LPT, IrDA)
    4. DualBIOS with Flash chips connected to the nF3's LPC bus (becouse there is no SuperI/O chip - removed in point 3)
    5. I have not used this board, but I would expect fully configurable/overclockable BIOS - settings for HyperTransport MHz, bit, CPU reference clock frequency (this is the appropriate name, not FSB, not PSB, not HT, whatever - this that is 200MHz by default), AGP clock adjust (and below it - indicator for resulting PCI speed), CPU/Memory clock dividor/multipliers, indicator for Memory MHz and CPU MHz (only indicators - that speeds depends on CPU reference clock/CPU main clock), Memory timings (CAS, etc.) adjust, etc. features
    6. Diagnostic LEDs, Reset, PowerUp on board
    7. Front Panel in the package - 2xUSB, phones, microphone, 1000-in-1 FlashCards (OK, 7-in-1 is enough , 1x SerialATA with hot-swap support, Diagnostic LEDs&buttons, fan controlls &etc., IrDA if you insist not to remove the SuperI/O chip.
    8. add a Silicon Image 3114 (4 SATA ports) until nF3 gets 8 SATAs. This will be helpfull for such a configuration (appropriate for top-of-the-line "Platinum"):
    - 4ports: RAID0+1 array of HDDs
    - 2ports: two optical drives for copy-on-the-fly; SerialATA ATAPI DVD+RWs are expected this summer
    - 1port: external hot-swap drive
    - 1port: reserved for later upgrade or for second external hot-swap drive
    Anyway - congratulations about implementing all 4 SATAs of nF3 and about designing two LANs (but why don't you solder the second?)
    personal wishes (I don't think that these below will become reality on mainstream boards soon)
    - digital FM tuner on board. Anthenna connector on the back I/O plane (instead of the COM, LPT, PS/2 ports). Maybe also add second connector and digital TV tuner PAL/SECAM/NTSC. Even HDTV/PAL/SECAM/NTSC.
    - I am waiting for WirelessUSB. I think it is better than Bluetooth, becouse less different standarts are better for the health of the PC as whole. The same reason for removing FireWire.
    - I am waiting for USB3.0/960Mbps - but this is only a wish
    - I am waiting for A64 IGP chipset with DX9 - some NV34 or NV4x-lowest-end core
    - I am waiting for A64 SoundStorm APU chipset - with also 24bit/192kHz on 7+1 channels
    - I am waiting for 8+1 channel setup: two front, two side, two rear, one center front, one center back, + one subwoofer; 32bit/192kHz. 32bit audio is overkill, but "32" is much more "round than 24" . FP64 in DX9 PS/VS is the same case

    go on there lad - dont ask for much do thee :>

  • K8N Neo Platinum BSODs

    Hello,
    I'm having problems with my new K8N Neo Platinum board.  So far I've had 3 different kinds of BSOD, unfortunately I only wrote 2 of them down:
    Stop 0x00000050 (0xD731FB75,0x00000008,0xD731FB75,0x00000000)
    no file mentionned
    Stop 0x000000D1 (0x86FF0224,0x00000006,0x00000000,0xF740EB68)
    in NVATABUS.SYS
    The third one I'm not sure of. I thought it was something like Stop 0x10000007F.
    The errors occur randomly (while completing boot-up, while scanning the harddisk for virusses) but mostly under heavy load.
    What I have done so far is:
    Memtest86: extended tests ran fine all night (24 cycles)
    Prime95 torture test: sometimes runs fine all night, sometimes stops with rounding errors: should be 0.4 but is 0.5
    Any thoughts on how to solve this?
    Thanks in advance....

    Devel28, thanks for your reply, but I guess I fixed it myself.
    Yesterday I searched the forum some more and gathered all tips on improving stability and applied some of them...
    What I did was:
    Changed BIOS settings:
    - AGP frequency to 67 instead of 66
    - CPU Ratio to 12x instead of Startup
    Set the DRAM configuration myself, instead of Auto:
    - Max Memclock: 200 Mhz
    - CAS latency: 2.5
    - RAS# to CAS#: 3
    - Min RAS#: 8
    - Row precharge: 3
    Now the system seems to be stable.  Prime95 ran all night without problems.
    I could scan my entire system for virusses while running Prime95 without crashes.
    Only thing I still have to look at is the memory bandwith.  According to Sisoft Sandra, my memory is performing worse than PC2100 memory.  I'll try some other benchmarks this weekend to verify this...

  • K8N Neo Platinum killed my X800 Pro

    I installed my new K8N Neo Platinum.
    I had an existing BBA X800 Pro in my old Epox 8RDA which I moved to my new MB.
    After firing up the K8N Neo, my X800 Pro was dead.
    The X800 Pro was fine just before I put it in the K8N Neo Platinum MB.
    One can reasonably assume it was the K8N Neo that killed my X800 Pro - what else could kill it?
    One thing that I did wrong was to not attach the smaller MB PSU plug (the 4 pin CPU power supply plug - I attached the other wider one), however, that should not kill the video card !!!
    I thought the MB was dead because the CPU fan was not spinning but after attaching the power supply plug, the MB started and CPU fan was spinning, however, my beloved X800 Pro was dead.
    I tried my X800 Pro in another computer and even reinstalled my old Epox MB, but to no avail. My X800 Pro is officiially dead.
    I'll be sending a $400 bill to MSI for a replacement

    I know it's dead because it says something like this on bootup:
    YOUR VIDEO CARD POWER CABLE IS NOT CONNECTED, PLEASE RTFM
    It didn't use those exact words but that was the meaning.
    After that mesage, the computer will not continue with the boot process - it just sits there like big lump of expensive rock
    The power cable is connected to the video card so the message is erroneous.
    I've tried the video card in another computer and the results are the same with the same message.
    The video card is dead.
    I closely examined the video card and I see no signs of damage. I paid close attention to the power supply socket on the video card and I could not see any damange and the soldering looks intact.
    It might be simple to fix the video card but I wouldn't know how to do it.

  • Three K8N Neo Platinum Solutions

    Hi All,
    With the help of lots of good information from this forum, I just got my new K8N Neo Platinum running nice and stable (and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it continues) and I figured I'd share what I learned.  Maybe it will help you too.
    Maxtor 16 MB Cache Hard Drives - didn't work, no matter what I tried.  I returned them and purchased a pair of Western Digital 200 GB SATA drives with 8 MB caches and they're running in RAID 1 just fine.  The Maxtors were very fast, but that doesn't matter if they aren't reliable.
    PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse - bad news.  Just plugging the keyboard into the PS/2 keyboard port would shut down the machine and it would even pout for awhile before it would boot again.  Plugging the keyboard into the PS/2 mouse port worked, but I still had stability problems.  The solution was a Belkin PS/2-to-USB adapter from CompUSA.  I plugged both the keyboard and the mouse into the adapter and the adapter into a single USB port and everybody was happy.  Note - other PS/2-to-USB adapters didn't work, but the Belkin did.
    Antec Sonata Case - wiring problem.  The pin arrangement on the cable from the USB port on the front of the case doesn't match the pin arrangement on the USB headers on the motherboard.  Plug it in and both USB headers stop working, which means the USB ports on your D-Bracket don't work if you have it plugged into the other USB header.  The solution is to unplug pin 10 on the Sonata USB cable.  Just use a knife to lift the little black tab on the connector and pull the wire to pin 10 out.  Plug the cable back in and both USB headers will work.  Feel free to call Antec Tech Support to verify this.  They know all about it.
    Well, that's all.  Hope this helped.  Good luck.
    Cheers,
    Dave

    Hmmm.... they must have fixed it. There was lot lot of reports in different forums about Antec PSUs & 64 boards "not playing nice" together.  It had something to do with an incompatable "power good" signal that was unique to Antec PSUs. It had been going on for several months....
    Looks like Antec dealt with the issue.
    I hadn't heard a thing about that.  I just bought an Antec Sonata with a 380W PSU and plugged it into my K8N Neo.  Fortunately, it worked fine.

  • K8N Neo Platinum: no video output, long beep and long wait, led 3 green

    I have a K8N Neo Platinum for about 4 years without big problems. Two days ago I dismounted teh pc to clean and put a new HD and when I mounted again it did not work.
    Problem:

    * Speaker keep making long beep followed by long rest;
    * D-Bracket LEDs are 3 green and 1, 2, 4 red meaning it hangs somewere near teh keyboard controller initialization;
    What I have tried:
    With no change:

    * Taken off everything from teh MB and put back only CPU, PSU, RAM, VGA and plugs for power and reset switch;
    * Turn on teh MB out of teh case;
    * Clear teh CMOS setting JBAT1 and by removing battery;
    * Tried all possible combinations of one and two RAM sticks and slots on MB;
    * Take out all of teh RAM;
    * Take out VGA;
    * Take out RAM and VGA;
    * Switched VGA;
    * Switched PSU;

    I have already had some problems like this before with power failures but magically things worked again. This time was teh same. I got things working some times at random (really random lol) by taking power cables, reseting bios and turning back on but teh problem reapeared when I put HDD back and did not work again when I removed it. Now I can't seem to get it to display anything.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks!
    Keyboard problem, you think? What do you have?
    Two things that are quite common:
    Do not attach PS2 keyboard when there is power in the system.
    Do attach USB keyboards when you are up and running in Windows.
    This is not it, but Logitech keyboard drivers often complicate things.
    I do use a PS2 kbd but never had problems with it (unlike teh PS2 mouse). I do not think it's kbd fault because it won't POST with or without it.

  • New Windows XP 64bit, but no drivers for K8N Neo Platinum

    Hello,
     I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum with an AMD 2800+. Just received the new Windows XP 64bit edition after attending a trade show in Houston. Used Partition Magic to make a separate partition on my SATA 400GB HD, knowing there was possibly going to be a problem. This is the final release, retail packaged, not the Beta.
    The only drivers found was for my MSI Nvidia 5600 AGp video card. No other audio, Nvidia chipset or board drivers are plug & play. Onboard LAN isn't even found.
    Any drivers out yet? I figure i'll have to wait. Can't get updates either bacause it won't detect onboard LAN or a Linksys or 3Com PCI card I tried also.
    Woodrow

    There most certainly are nVidia drivers.  The only thing that there aren't drivers for currently is the onboard sound.  This, combined with lack of driver support for my peripherals (webcam and printer) are why I haven't made the switch.

  • Good News For K8N Neo Platinum Users!!!

       Ok, after fiddling with my BIOS for almost 2 days now, and scanning the forums for a solution, I contacted MSI Technical Support in California, USA. They are sending me a new BIOS chip, free of charge, so anyone having a severe problem with BIOS revisions 1.8 and 1.9 on the K8N Neo Platinum (MS-7030) please give tech support a call, I let them know I would be posting this in the forum and they will be inandated with phone calls, but woohoo, they are sending a new chip pre-flashed with BIOS revision 1.7.
    Please refer to this thread for the reasons why:BIOS v1.9 Is Terrible

      What good news?  UK based MSI did not offer any such replacement bios after my problems updating to 1.8 bios.
    I purchased a new bios chip with 1.9 bios from a UK supplier.....after fitting the bios I returned to the same problems as before, failure to boot past post and freezing in bios menu. I then remembered another post on this sight and removed one stick of memory......everything back to normal    .I have just fitted a 1gb Corsair cas 2 memory and all seems well I will save my 2X 512 Corsair XL my next project which will not be a MSI Motherboard
    MSI UK  have not come out of this very well and from the posts that I have read there are quite a few people out there with problems. Many thanks to all those who posted on this,  it certainly helps to know that you are not the only one with problems.
