New kernel(8/13/08) and hal notification

After yesterday's kernel/system upgrade I got message to remove hal from etc/rc.conf as it is deprecated, or being deprecated.  (Ubuntu 9.10-alpha release notes also gave similar info about hal)
If this is so what is replacing hal? --udev new version+?  How will that affect # 'pacman -S hal' step for automatic xorg setup during installation(August iso version); and what daemon, if any, will replace hal in the daemon array of /etc/rc.conf?
I want to thank the Archer's for the great wikis:)  KDE-4.3 is beautiful!

djszapi I am using standard 32-bit i686 version.  I was wondering about message during update of 8/13 that said hal is being deprecated(?) to remove it from daemon array of /etc/rc.conf. Unless I misunderstood. Hal  is still in my /etc/rc.conf.
Putting a !hal in the daemons list on reboot, got me to login window without mouse or keyboard activity.       Using Mandriva's root gedit I removed the !(from hal) and my system reboots with keyboard and mouse again functioning. Just to be sure I checked with pacman and xf86-input-keyboard and -mouse were missing.  They were re-installed.
I also have an /etc/rc.conf.pacnew which is like the fresh install file.  Wonder when that will take-over?

hallo arch mates is there any problem when installer a fresh install from ftp with the new kernel some of my friends need to edit grup after install is it a error or is the arch-0.7.2-ftp.iso not build to handle the new kernel ??
    Over And Out  :?:

Mh? I don't see a problem using 0.7.2 ftp install cd. Also not when editing grub file.
But if you get problems you might try this one http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=25236

  • New kernel, no boot

    Hello,
first things first, the standard supplied 2.6.32-ARCH x86_64 kernel boots fine, no udev problems and everything. So I took it's configuration for the new kernel (2.6.33-git4) made oldconfig and thinned out what I thought isn't needed. This resulted basically in a booting kernel, but when it came to running hooks I've got problems that resemble the ones in these threads, I get the message that udev already seems to be running afterwards root can't be found:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=81657
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=689678
with the difference that it doesn't boot further, it drops me to a ramfs shell because it can't find a root file system. I followed several hints in other threads like making sure the filesystems are compiled in-kernel and not as module but to no avail. What I found interesting that unlike in these threads it searches for a disk by UUID, not /dev/sdX. That the disks are still named via /dev/sdX in fstab shouldn't be the problem since it can't find  /, on which fstab lies. Or is it?
    mkinitcpio.conf, didn't change anything:
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes, into the CPIO image, and additional
    # binaries a given user may wish. This is run first, so may
    # be used to override the actual binaries used in a given hook.
    # (Existing files are NOT overwritten is already added)
    # BINARIES are dependancy parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in anyway. This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options,
    # like so:
    # FILES="/etc/modprobe.conf"
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'modload' may be used in place of 'udev', but is not recommended
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    # This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    # No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    # This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    # work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    # This is identical to the above, except the old ide subsystem is
    # used for IDE devices instead of the new pata subsystem.
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    # This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    # No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
    # This setup assembles an pata raid array with an encrypted root FS.
    # Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H raid' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev pata raid encrypt filesystems"
    # This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev usb lvm2 filesystems"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    # COMPRESSION
    # Use this to compress the initramfs image. With kernels earlier than
    # 2.6.30, only gzip is supported, which is also the default. Newer kernels
    # support gzip, bzip2 and lzma.
    #COMPRESSION="gzip"
    #COMPRESSION="bzip2"
    #COMPRESSION="lzma"
kernel .conf, on which I later changed the filesystems from module to in-kernel, which didn't work either and produced the same error:
    http://pastebin.com/me928e7d
Are there any other conf files I need to supply so that everyone can get a clue what's going on?

I tried compiling drivers and filesystems as modules and in-kernel, didn't work. Changed fstab to UUID scheme, didn't work. Started fresh and took the almost unmodified arch .config, didn't work either. In the it's still the same, first that udev error (which doesn't come up with the standard kernel) followed by two errors, can't find disk-by-uuid-blah, can't create --> ramfs shell.
    Latest .config: http://pastebin.com/m34f48589
Edit: redid the whole thing again and made sure that I have all modules together, which would be these, taken from the running arch kernel:

  • NEW KERNEL V47, and a new hope for 720p video play...

thats right people, after matan's strange disappearing, we now have pali getting us new kernels, and his first kernel with loads of new awesome patches is in the extras devels ( v47 ) , you can try it out, same installation method as the old v46  (or v42 from the extras ), and same overclocking method too .
and now he is working on a 720p video playback patch, he already got the 720p media codecs (finally) and many users reported that they are able to play 720p mpeg4 videos on the n900 (this patch isn't in the extras devel version....yet ! ) so now we don't have a hardware problem to play 720p videos, the problem is in gstreamer (video player in the default media player) but thank god, we have MohamadAG to work on that openmedia player so we can finally get 720p video playback .
and if we can play 720p videos, we can shoot them too .
and i can say that after 40 minutes of hard usage of this new kernel my phone seems a lot smoother and abit faster than the old v46 or v42 with the same overclocking settings .
Use Hildon Application Manager or via apt-get
    Step 1 Installation:
In Hildon Application Manager install package: Linux Kernel for power user
    Or via apt-get package: kernel-power-flasher
    Step 2 Multiboot support:
    First see step 1.
Then in Hildon Application Manager install package: Linux Kernel for power user (boot image)
    Or via apt-get package: kernel-power-bootimg
this is not for noobs right now, but it will be soon, and it might become a part of the cssu .
and btw if you get a 400 degrees temprature in conky don't panic, its a false value, its 40

and for 720 p playback we are porbably going to use open medi pllayer, for anyone that wants to use it, search this forum for "open media player" , its a faster version of the original one, with more effects and smoothness .

  • What's the deal with Intel and the new kernel?

    Hi
I have trouble understanding the whole deal behind Intel's video drivers and the new kernel. What doesn't work and why? Could someone please try to explain what the problem is in a way so that a newbie like me can understand it?
    Thanks

Intel and Linux are transitioning to a new graphics system. We're in the middle of the transition, so everything's kinda suckish right now. Old kernel and drivers are better, development kernel and drivers are almost as good, and they will get much better soon.

I just updated to OSX and keep getting notifications to download new versions of Pages, Keynote and Numbers, would these be free?

Normally, that would be excellent advice. But in this case it is not thought to be necessary.
The new copies will be installed "loose" in the Applications folder. The originals are kept in the iWork folder in the Applications folder. If you do not like the new versions, they can be discarded and the original versions will be used again.
The new versions have many new  iCloud features, but some users have complained that key features they require are missing. It is thought that Apple will add them over time.

  • BELKIN F7D2101 and new kernel 4.x.x

After working with Arch for years and using for Internet connection
a wireless usb adaptor (BELKIN F7D2101) with netctl (static) profile,
I lost network and Internet connection after the 4.0 kernel upgrade.
The error message from booting 4.0 kernel (linux):
"WPA association/authentication failed for interface 'wlan0'
Failed to bring the network up for profile 'wlan0-conn-x193C79'
Failed to start A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection using a static IP"
The adaptor blinks while booting and stops blinking at the end of booting,
and wlan0 interface is down, although it is loading module r8712u and
rtlwifi/rtl871u.bin. Manually removing and loading module and seting up
wlan0 interface has no result for netctl (static) profile to work.
The new 4.0 kernel Arch installation cd can't set up working network
interface although it's loading the same module and firmware.
I managed to get network and internet connection with the old installation cd
and with chroot I downloaded the two other official kernels but in vain.
Especially the linux-lts kernel, which is 3.x.x series kernel never loads driver
and firmware not even manually with modprobe (fatal error) and gives error message:
"Timed out waiting for device sys-subsystem-net-devices-wlan0.device
Dependency failed for A simple WPA encrypted wireless connection using a static IP".
Finally I managed to download compile and install linux-mainline from AUR (many thanks
guys), and booting this kernel I had network and Internet connection working again.
As you see I have found a solution for my problem, but I would like to solve the problem
with more staight solutions like working linux (official) kernel and it may be help for
other users, or is it a kernel bug?
    I should appreciate any help.

You don't have to put the new names at all... that's the point behind grub2's update script.  Just delete the symlinks in /boot and regenerate your grub.cfg and you're done.

  • New kernel and problems installing nvidia-legacy drivers

I just compiled new kernel, and I can't install nvidia-legacy drivers properly. Pacman installs them, but the module (nvidia.ko) goes to /lib/modules/2.6.19-ARCH, and I want it to 2.6.19.2.. It doesn't work if I just copy the module..
I've compiled kernel many times without problems when I was still using Slackware.  So, what do I need to configure to use the new module directory? I Propably made some small/stupid mistake..
I tried legacy drivers from nvidia.com, but they didnt compile.. weird, gonna try that again too..

You need to install the nvidia drivers, or any other non-kernel drivers, specifically for the kernel you are using. Arch packages the nvidia drivers to work with the Arch kernel packages, and the "Arch way" to deal with your situation is to modify the appropriate PKGBUILD to match your kernel, create a custom package with makepkg, and install it with pacman.
You can also use the nvidia installer, but in that case the nvidia files installed on your system will not be under pacman's control.

  • Grub2 and the new kernel (3.x.x)

    Hi,
It is recommended to adapt the bootloader to the new kernel. While with grub the procedure is easy, grub2 isn't just as obvious.
I use generated /boot/grub/grub.cfg, so the only editable file should be /etc/default/grub. I can't see where to put new names (vmlinuz-linux, etc.), though.

You don't have to put the new names at all... that's the point behind grub2's update script.  Just delete the symlinks in /boot and regenerate your grub.cfg and you're done.

  • New Z10 Random reboots and text notifications STILL

June 13th I upgraded from a Torch to the Z10. 3 days later, it was randomly rebooting about 4 times a day. I went through a wipe and reinstall and it seemed to work for about a week and then it started with the random rebooting as well as telling me I had texts when I didn't, and telling me every single day that there was a software upgrade available for the very same OS I already had on the phone!
I took it into Rogers and because it was past 2 weeks my options were dismal so I went with the free option. I had them send it in to be fixed. I just picked it up today and haven't even had it back 4 hours. I just got it back to where I wanted it preference wise and blammo! Random reboots and text notifications when there are none.
My options from here? Send it in AGAIN, or pay a $120 deductible through my protection plan for a 'new' phone (= refurbished - I was told they cannot guarantee me it would be brand new), or pay for the phone outright (in the neighborhood of $600) and then start a new plan for a different brand of phone (and yes, I will convert to the other side if this doesn't get resolved properly).
So frustrated because I feel it's extremely unfair to have to pay to own a device that doesn't even work just to get out of my contract (this is my provider but if they aren't able to get their money back from BB then why would they give me mine back?)... especially given that I received it just over a month ago and already had to send it out for a repair that didn't even work!
HELP!? I've tried everything... I'm SO disappointed and frustrated. I've been a loyal BB customer for over 5 years. This is about to end if there is no resolution. I need a phone I can rely on.
Thank you in advance to the powers that be - may they have mercy!

  • New kernel and GRUB configuration

I recently downloaded and installed from the AUR the maxim patch to fix the mon0 problem with aircrack-ng.
Both makepkg and pacman -U finish without any issues.
The problem comes in when I try to set my system up to use the 2.6.8 kernel which is created by the process.
When it first finished, the new kernel was created on my "/" partition. I got them moved "/boot" partition in order to get my system set up.
The current files in my "/boot" are:
    grub (folder)
    lost+found (folder)
    9a97750b-6285-42a6-9712-877d9ef12eca (uuid of the drive)
    kernel26-img
    kernel26-fallback.img
    vmlinuz26
    System.map26
    kernel26-nx.img
    kernel26-nx-fallback.img
    vmlinuz26-nx
    System.map26-nx
    My /grub/menu.lst says:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title         Arch Linux
    root         (hd0,0)
    kernel     /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/842288ba-e9a8-4a6e-8e60-4a54e4844dcd ro
    initrd       /kernel26-fallback.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title         Arch Linux Fallback
    root         (hd0,0)
    kernel     /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/842288ba-e9a8-4a6e-8e60-4a54e4844dcd ro
    initrd       /kernel26-fallback.img
Under this configuration is works fine. When I switch it to:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title         Arch Linux
    root         (hd0,0)
    kernel     /vmlinuz26-nx root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/842288ba-e9a8-4a6e-8e60-4a54e4844dcd ro
    initrd       /kernel26-nx-.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title         Arch Linux Fallback
    root         (hd0,0)
    kernel     /vmlinuz26-nx root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/842288ba-e9a8-4a6e-8e60-4a54e4844dcd ro
    initrd       /kernel26-nx-fallback.img
It boots to "Waiting 10 seconds for drive..." Then puts me in to the ramfs because the drive does not respond. I am sure I am doing something wrong, I just don't know what.

I changed the boot string to:
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26-nx root=/dev/sda3 ro
    initrd /kernel26-nx.img
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda3
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda3'
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
EDIT: I just tried with all of the drives, sda1,sda2,sda3,sda4 all with the same result.
