New Kernel upgrade

I Syu'd two days ago and after which, my battery started charging all the way to 100%. It also gave me the longest battery life since I've got this laptop. I've written about this before [https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=129597]. However, after an Syu yesterday, things returned to normal funny behavior. May I know what exactly you guys did to the kernel over the past few days?

I'm sorry, but that's all greek to me. What am I supposed to be looking for?

  • Ath5k probs after new kernel upgrade (/kernel26 2.6.34.3-1)

I just did a pacman -Syu and the new kernel /kernel26 2.6.34.3-1 causes issues with my ath based card. Ath5k is the kernel module I've used, and now I get a bunch of calibration errors in dmesg.  Is anyone else having this issue?
I'd rather not go back to madwifi...but I will if I have to...ath5k has been pretty solid since it's come out.

    See my post here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=102751
I had problems but I am using ath9k. I partially solved mine by getting the kernel out of testing. Not sure if the two issues are related.
    Good luck!!!

  • What is the best way to upgrade to a new kernel?

I would like to upgrade to the new kernel: kernel26-2.6.23.14-1 from the one from core (on the CD).
What is the best way to do this? Also, is there a way to find out what is new / has changed in the new kernel?
    Thanks for any insights.

Surely you have tried pacman -Syu?
Kernel changelogs are on kernel.org. Perhaps it's more interesting to read articles on kerneltrap.org though.
I have had a kernel panic one time I upgraded a kernel. I had to walk back step-by-step to backtrack what I did.
I basically uninstalled the nv kernel driver for xorg and installed the proprietary drivers from their website (which I shouldn't have uninstalled nv drivers, but nonetheless I learned from it). But, somehow I think one of the packages I installed automatically upgraded to the lastest kernel. When I reverted to the properietary drivers it somehow uninstalled the latest kernel. The key thing I learned was "install the right drivers the first time!" But, yes, I know about "Pacman -Syu" in general, but didn't know that was the appropriate way to do it. It's just my two cents.

  • After Kernel Upgrade, Not reflecing the new kernel patch no

    Hi All,
Our environment is ERP 6.0, Oracle 10.2 and HP-UX 11. We have upgraded the Kenel patch no 291 from 201.
When we tried the command disp+work its showing 291 but when we checked in SAP level in SM51 t-code its
showing 201. Please help to correct the issue.
    Thanks,
    Sreekanth

    Hello,
As you have 2 different machine types, then you should perform 2 kernel updates.
The kernel for IA64 is different from the one for PA-RISC.
In your configuration, you should have 2 physical /sapmnt/SID/exe directories. One for IA64 and the other one for PA-RISC.
In  "classical" configurations , all the CI and AS run on the same kind of processor architecture. The /sapmnt/SID directory is shared between all the application servers ( wether CI or AS ) . Then when you perform a kernel upgrade in these environments, you patch in /sapmnt/SID/exe and the files are copied to all the application servers on restart by sapcpe. Sapcpe copies files that have changed from /sapmnt/SID/exe to /usr/sap/SID/<INSTANCE_DIR>/exe.
If you have a CI and 2 dialog instances of the same bytecode, this means that files are copied, for example, from /sapmnt/SID/exe to
    /usr/sap/SID/DVEBMGS00/exe
    /usr/sap/SID/D10/exe
    /usr/sap/SID/D20/exe
In fact the disp+work processes are started from these last directories and not from /sapmnt/SID/exe. That's why you can have differences beetween what you have in /sapmnt/SID/exe and wht you see when you check in SAP through the System -> Status menu bar. This means something went wrong in the kernel update ( sapcpe not working or other things... ) .
When you use different bytecodes, then there should be 2 different physical /sapmnt/SID/exe directories ( one for eache bytecode ).
    Hope i'm clear enough
    Best regards,
    Steve.

  • Solution Manager 4.0- Kernel Upgrade(disp+work stops)

    Hi,
While doing Kernel Upgrade for Solution manger 4.0 , the disp+work stops.
I have taken the Packs as per my requisite for Windows server X64 bit - Unicode
The files that were taken are :
    SAPEXEDB_102-20001356.SAR
    SAPEXE_102-20001354.SAR
The services were stopped, the sap was stopped and the exe backup was taken.
Now after uncar of the SAR files, and while starting the services and SAP, the disp+work stops.
The trace file of disp+work has been shown below:

which pkg else should I remove?
your kernel. i'd recommend you to do that first:
    cp /boot/System.map26 /boot/System.map26.old
    cp /boot/vmlinuz26 /boot/vmlinuz26.old
in case of problem with your newly installed kernel, edit the grub entry at boot according to the new back-up names above.
    then simply:
    pacman -Uf kernel26-snapshot-2.6.31-rc6-git6-i686.pkg.tar.gz
also, why has mkinitcpio been removed? reinstall it before installing your new kernel.

  • "disp+work" process in not getting started after kernel upgradation

    Hello Experts,
    Good day…..,
I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741, but the “disp+work” process is not getting started after kernel upgrade.
    I have posted “dev_W0” log &
“disp+work” command result obtained in CMD prompt of respective server.
Please help me out in this. Thanks all in advance.

For this issue you need to set up SSFS.

I am new to SAP. I installed SAP ECC6 EHP4 with default kernel version 701 and it was working fine.
I have upgraded kernel version from 701 to 741
Are you sure kernel 741 is compatible with an EHP 4 system ?

  • Internet does not work after kernel upgrade...

I have been reading all of the other threads and have tried everything possible to downgrade my kernel to 2.6.26 rather then 2.6.27.  I have found a package for kernel 2.6.26.2-1 and nvidia 173.14.12-2 but they do not mix and wont let me start x when i downgrade both of them.  Is there some way i can get past this as not having internet is frustrating
    Edit:
    I have tried using this
    echo 0 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_sack
    echo 0 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_dsack
and it did not work, i have also tried downgrading dhcpcd and that didn't work so i'm assumin git is infact the kernel.
    Edit again:
When downgrading both the kernel and nvidia with those two packages i found, my computer boots up fine up untill i get to the command line to type "startx".  The i get this error message after typing "startx" :
Error: API mismatch: the nvidia kernel module has version 173.14.12, but thus nvidia driver component has version 177.80. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.
After i got this i went and reinstall kernel 2.6.27 and the latest nvidia to look at the nvidia package i had installed.  I extracted it and all the was in it was a hierarchy of folders "/lib/modules/2.6.26-ARCH/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko"  and that nvidia.ko file.  Is it possible that i'm not installing the driver jsut a kernel module?
    Once again... Edit lol:
Also i found a package for nvidia-utils and installed it with nvidia and the kernel and i can "startx", but it freezes everytime and i have to manually restart the computer with the reset button
    Last edited by opeth115 (2008-10-19 22:03:56)

I use nvidia96xx legacy drivers with no trouble, so I'm not sure I'll be of much help. I did read the announcment that nvidia no longer supports a certain card/cards, and there is a new legacy driver in the repo. Maybe you need to be using that one?
Also, I wasn't effected with any issues with the new kernel, but I did have a small issue with dhcpcd shortly after the kernel upgrade. It kept failing when trying to connect to the Internet. It was a simple fix though. I compared my  /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd with /etc/conf.d/dhcpcd.pacnew and there was a significant difference.
    I was using the string....
    DHCPCD_ARGS="-N -t 30 -h $HOSTNAME"
I just needed to change it to the string in dhcpcd.pacnew....
    DHCPCD_ARGS="-q -L -t 30 -h $HOSTNAME"
Anyway, sorry if this doesn't help.

  • SAP does not start after Kernel Upgrade

    Hi
We were carrying out the Kernel upgrade on our HPUX 11.23 and Oracle, R3 Quality System. From Kernel 196 to Kernel 221
After carrying taking a backup of the current exe folder we have copied the new exe ( after Uncar )
    We restarted the system
We then started the Lsnrctl and it started successfully.
After login in as SIDadm and issuing the startsap command it gives the following error message in the startup log

After this we have restored the backup....after restart etc...it still gives the same error
Can anyone exeperienced such a problem. Would appricate if you could share on how you resolved the same.
    Regards,
    Milind Karoor

    Hi Milind!
Just make sure that you have uncarred both OS dependent and independent files
And also make sure that you copy to the existing folder of RUN (make sure your folder name is RUN)after taking a backup.
As You copy it asks to overwrite, then you overwrite the existing ones.
By doing this some of the files which will not be present in the new Kernel will be present., sometimes this may be also one of the reason
As i have faced the same problem
    Thanks,

  • Kernel upgrade having ABAP+JAVA instance

    Hi team,
Can you provide the procedure how to kernel upgrade for our windows system having ABAP+JAVA instance releae version 700.
Provide the links, your replies are very helpful.
    Regards
    Bhaskar

    Hi Bhaskar,
You can use JSPM too in this case. Otherwise if you want to do it the old fashioned way:
    > Stop SAP, Database, Saprouter, listeners and all the
    related services.
    > The location of the kernel is /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
    > Take a backup of the files in this location and take a
print out of the ls -ltr (This is needed to give the new files the
    correct permissions)
    > Overwrite all the new files to the kernel location. The
purpose is to retain the old files for which the new version is not
    available.
    > The permissions of the file need to be changed as they
    were before.
    > Restart all the processes. The kernel upgrade is
    now done. System
    > status will give the newer version of the kernel.>
    >
    disp+work
    Will give the
    new Kernel version.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /

I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

  • Kernel Upgrade

    Hi Gurus,
I have questions regarding kernel upgarade. I have downloaded db dependent and independent .sar files and put it in new folder outside the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc. Now my questions:
    1. Is it ok to uncar .sar files in my own directory?
    2. After unpacking .sar files, do i need to transfer the files to the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc?
I need your expert opinion on this since this is the first time I do kernel upgrade. If anyone happens to have document on kernel upgrade in Windows, much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Eleazar

  • Kernel Upgrade : Few Doubts

    during kernel upgrade.
I renamed original kernel exe to exe.old > mv exe exe.XX
downloaded two SAR & uncarded files to a directory and renamed it to exe. > mv exe.YY exe
after found there were multiple files were missing in new kernel.
is that some thing happen ?

    Hi
As Nicholas said dont rename the exe folder, after extracting new kernel files just copy those files into your exe folder, because two files what you have download doesn't give all files which are necessary to start the SAP.
So you better extract files into new folder, copy those files into your exe folder using below command.
    >cp -rp <newfiles> /sapmnt/<SID>/exe
some times it may give warning saying that some files cann't be replaced because files are in use.
Then just note down that file names and rename that file in exe folder like below.
    >cd /sapmnt/<SID>/exe
    >mv <filename> <filename>.old
Again you copy new files to exe.
    >cp -rp <newfiles> /sapmnt/<SID>/exe

  • Unusual problem in kernel upgrade in grub UUID

FWIW ::grub wiki shows a forward slash in the grub line for UUID at the beginning of the UUID data.
The grub generated by the new kernel linux-3.0-1 inserts an equals sign.  This user is not aware if all downloads provide this difference.
With the equals sign, my UUID was not recognized for the root partition.
After inserting the forward slash, the system booted correctly into kde desktop.
This change was necessary for both arch linux boot and fallback boot.
I also had to change the grub menu.lst kernel line to make it permanent and the same for the fallback kernel line in grub menu.lst.
With the equals sign in the grub kernel line my boots produced an error message::::unable to determine major-minor number of root device.......
Perhaps this info will help others in upgrading .
    EDIT:  My system is x86_64

    Hi Shiva,
You may refer SAP Notes 19466 and 684106, which tells you procedure to download and implement latest Kernel patch levels.
You can check whether your kernel patch level is upgraded or not, following below procedure.
System--> status > other Kernel info> Patche level
    or
    Transaction SM50> Processes> Process info-->Patch Level.
Coming to next question, you  can find whether kernel is 32 bit or 64 bit, using the platform ID.
You  can find this platform ID in your system,
    system--> status.
Now relate this Platform to SAP Note 146289, where you can find the correct bit of your kernel.
If you need any other information, please reply me.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Pavan Kumar Gali.
