  • New Camera RAW Tutorial Series

John Nack has just blogged about a new Camera RAW tutorial series by George Jardine.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2013/12/25-new-video-tutorials-on-camera-raw.html
It cost $30 which does not sound much, but I'd love to hear feedback from anyone who has seen it.
You can read more details at
    http://mulita.com/blog/?page_id=6934
Including a link to a 17 minute free chapter.

    Thank you, Trevor.
I've been waiting and hoping that George would do a series on the latest Camera Raw to match his tutorials on Lightroom, which he always does first.
I purchased his series on ACR 6 and they were excellent, so I have every faith that his new series on ACR 8.3 in CC (which also covers ACR 8.3 and ACR 7.x in CS6) will be just as good.
So far I have watched the first 6 tutorials (ending with the one on the Basic Tab) and they are pretty good.
One of the bonuses is that along the way he gives you links to further in-depth totorials on his Website regarding particular topics: eg, the interaction of, and different ways of manipulating, the Highlights/Shadows and Whites/Blacks sliders for particular types of images. Looking forward to viewing those.

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.
Additional Box Shots of the N670GTX PE OC
    MSI Series Comparison Table
New Power Edition Series which is a notch higher than the basic Twin Frozr Series.
Below are some other basic specs of the card which not been mentioned above.

  • ThinkPad X201 vs new model X series??

    Hi,
could you please give me your opinion.
if you buy new thinkpad, would you go for X201 or new model X series? almost same price.
as i am classic ThinkPad fanatic i love x201 but price is high considering it is old model.
    what would be your idea?
    thanks

Depends what you're looking for in a laptop.
    Screen:
    X201 has a 16:10 screen. X220 and later have 16:9 screens.
X201 can retrofit a ddecent AFFS screen. X220 and later have an okay IPS screen from factory.
    Performance:
X201 through X230 have decently clocked full power CPUs. X240 has a bit weaker but still okay CPU. Everything afterwards is low-power.
X201 to X220 also significantly increased integrated GPU performance. X220 to X230 to X240 are modest increases.
    Storage:
X201 can only take a primary drive. X220 and later can take a primary plus mSATA/NGFF SSD.
    Wifi Card:
X201 and X220 can have the BIOS whitelist removed for wifi cards. X230 and later cannot.
    Battery Life:
X201 to X220 is the biggest jump in battery life. X220 to X230 to X240 are relatively minor increases. X220 and later can take a battery slice too.
    Keyboard:
X201 and X220 have classic keyboards. X230 and later have chiclet keyboards.

  • Jeff + Michael 'New Video Tutorial' ?????

Did I read a while back that Jeff and Michael had (were) producing a new video tutorial concerning LR called something along the lines of 'From Shoot to Print'? Have I got this all wrong, and if not, anyone else heard about it and when/if we can expect it? Perhaps Jeff will be so kind as to jump in here. :-)

    Ian
Thanks for that. I raised it here due to the many problems people appear to be having with their prints - especially with Epsom printers. Whether or not this is due to incorrect profiles, a fault with several Epsom printers, failing to set up LR correctly or a combination of each is anyones guess, but as Jeff appears to be using Epsom printers it would be nice to know whether the tutorial video will go into detail (visually) of how he sets the entire thing up.
It might just give those having current printing problems something to look forward to, and others (like me) who are considering upgrading their current printers a better reason not to shun Epsoms. :-)

  • Heads up! A new video tutorial

The inimitable Izzy has just issued a new video tutorial on the Travel Matte Alpha. He demonstrates its utility to place video within text, but obviously it has other uses.
    The tutorial is free.
Under the agreement terms of this Forum, I cannot provide a link, but Izzy Video is not hard to find.
I do not stand to benefit from this post.
    Have fun.
    Allosaurus

    Allosaurus,
Someone must have looked at your post and clicked the "Report this post" button, perhaps accidentally. Or maybe they knew that Izzy Video is a membership site that charges a membership fee, but not knowing that Izzy also provides +high quality, free tutorials!+ Either way, I wouldn't worry about or be offended about being contacted by Apple on this.
Your participation is great, you have no financial interest in Izzy Video that I know of, and if you provided a link to Izzy Video's website you are certainly not the first to have done so! I think the email was unwarranted.

While Lynda.com's least expensive option is their Online

    their video

  • New LabVIEW Instrument -Nugget

How to add "New LabVIEW Instrument" to the windows "New" context menu.  This is something I have meaning to try for a while, and I am sure I will find useful where very long paths are involved.  I thought I would share the process with you, even though its not really a LabVIEW thing.
Here is what I want to see in the NEW menu when i right click in a folder::
And here's how to do it.  First, be careful in the registry!
Use the registry editor and browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.VI
Add a new key called ShellNew
Create a string value "FileName" in this new key.  Give in a value of LabVIEWInst.vi.  This VI is the template that windows will use to create the new vi.
Close the registry editor when it looks like this:
Now create a new, blank VI and call it LabVIEWInst.vi
Save it in the folder Windows\ShellNew.  (I had to save it to the desktop first, then move it to the ShellNew folder as Win7 had issues saving to the Windows folder.)
    All Done!
Now log off and back on to refresh the ShellNew list.
I Hope this is of use to somebody.
    Michael.

The problem is, after stopping the simulation and restarting it again, some important parameters of the VI are not initialized again and therefore all my calculations in the Labview Instrument file are messed up.
Is there any option to set the params back to their default values after the simulation has been restarted?

  • Installing old VIs in newer LabVIEW folder: how to avoid conversion warnings?

We are offering a set of VIs to our users. We build our own installer which installs them into the LabVIEW program folder under vi.lib. A menu file is installed in the menus tor which collects the VIs in a palette.
For providing compatibility with LV 8.2 and up the VIs are in v8.2 format. When they are installed in a higher LV version and a LV program that contains some of the VIs is closed, LV issues the warning that the VIs have been recompiled and converted from an older format. How can we install the VIs so that LV ignores the format version?

    smercurio_fc wrote:
I did not mean to imply that setting the read-only flag would fix your problem. Only that it would prevent the file from being saved, if that's what you were intending to be done. You cannot change the behavior, as it is by design. You can deal with it by compiling the VIs when you install the software, as has been mentioned. Or, you can distribute pre-compiled versions in the LabVIEW versions of your choice.
You mean it is definitely not possible to have VIs in one, relatively old LabVIEW format and install them for newer LabVIEW versions without getting this (completely useless) warning? This is hard to believe. How do other companies distribute their LabVIEW programming interfaces? Do they really maintain a VI versions for every LV version (and possible sub-version) just to guarantee a good user experience?
Since the recompiled changes are dumped anyway, I would expect a VI or library flag I could set or a special way of installing the VIs that tells LabVIEW: ignore the changes when the VI is closed.
Recompiling everything during installation is not what we want since it would make the installation process too complicated, in which our LabVIEW API is just a small part. If nothing else works I would rather install the VIs writable so the user could just hit "save all" when he closes his program and get rid of the warnings, but this is not optimal.

  • New Hibernate Tutorial

There's a new Hibernate tutorial available.
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/javatools/jscreator/learning/tutorials/2/hibernate.html
This tutorial shows you how to build a web application in the Java Studio Creator IDE that uses Hibernate libraries and plain old Java objects (POJOs). This tutorial is for developers who have a solid working knowledge of Hibernate. To learn more about Hibernate, see the Hibernate reference documentation.
In this tutorial, you wrap a Person POJO (where Person is a mapping of the Person database table) with an array of com.sun.rave.web.ui.model.Option objects and bind a DropDown List component to the array. You then extend the ObjectListDataProvider class to build a TripDataProvider wrapper for the Trips POJO, and bind the Table component to an instance of the TripDataProvider class.
Note: since Hibernate is a third party product, this requires a separate download of the Hibernate libraries. This tutorial mentions where
and how to use the Hibernate libraries.

  • Where is the Taking an NI-DAQmx Measurment in LabVIEW tutorial

    Hello
I am new user to LabVIEW and I am using the LabVIEW 7 Express (
Evaluation Software) to learn more and see if we can use this in our
research group. However, when I got to section 4: Acquiring Data and
Communicating with Instruments, I got stuck.
    1) I can not find the Tutorial " Taking an NI-DAQmx Measurement in LabVIEW
    2) I can not find the DAQ Assitant in my output palette.
Can some one help me plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Hello kurt
Thank your for your quick reply to my question, However, it did not work and It seems like I have some other problems.
I have installed the LabVIEW 7 Express on my machine. as I mentioned it is a Evaluation version. ( v7.0)
I also installed the NI-DAQmx Base on this PC. My major question is
this: In order to run this tutorials, do I need to have my DAQ card
installed on this machine as well ???? or the tutorial is not related
    to the the DAQ card.
    1) you told me I should see the : "Go to help
drop down menu in either block diagram or front panel > Taking an
NI-DAQmx Measurement in LabVIEW: In this tutorial, you create a voltage
measurement task using the DAQ Assistant.
You can manually navigate to this on your system at C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\help"
When I open a new VI and go to help, I do not see this option under it. I do not see any turorial uner that.
    2) Also, I see foler with the name of lab view 7.1 but there is not
short cuts to that so I am not able to run that.( all I can run is the
    7.0 evaluation version).
    What am I doing worng??

  • ANN: Tutorial Series: Industrial-Strength BC4J

    Available 3/26/03
    http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/tutorials/bc4jvsm/bc4jvsmtoc.htm
This series of tutorials uses the Virtual Shopping Mall sample application to demonstrate programming techniques that take advantage of features of Business Components for Java (BC4J), Oracle's standards-based, server-side framework for creating scalable, high-performance J2EE applications. While describing parts of the larger application, each tutorial is self-contained, and each explains how to use a technique or perform a task.
The application enables vendors to set up online shops, customers to browse through the shops, and a system administrator to approve and reject requests for new shops and maintain lists of shop categories. OTN developers used Oracle9i JDeveloper and the Oracle Business Components for Java (BC4J) framework to build the application.

o.k i managed to get rid of the exceptions
you need to copy the contents of /jakata-struts/lib to
    vsm-bc4j/classes
and yes my struts-common path is set.
in your install instructions you could mention that errors go into:
    VSM-BC4J-oc4j-app.log
it will same us a load of time, for tracking errors.
also get them to re-write the scripts that you have to run, so that you do not have to keep typing in the paths, but instead the paths are set in the scripts.( we can modify them)
it will also show people new to the app. what you are talking about, and which paths
    moving right along:
    2 more questions.
    1. as an example how secure is this app.?
is it a good way to implement security for a web site.?
also you could mention what code is kept on the server and what is sent to the local client, perhaps in the code files, and for god sake get the programmers to comment their code more.
    2. O.K one more possible bug.( running from jdeveloper)
when i select "sign in" from the title screen, i get sent to the login screen.
when i enter the password & user name.
    i get redirected to :
    "/BC4JVSM/null", which does not exist
it appears to be in "login.jsp" in "vsmwebapp.jpr"
    request.getAttribute("Home") is returning null.
i have re-written the code to:
    String tail =(String)request.getAttribute("Home");
    String url = request.getContextPath()+"/"+tail;
    if((tail==null)||(tail.equalsIgnoreCase("null")))
    url = request.getContextPath()+"/"+UIController.getInstance().getUI("DEFAULT","LOGIN");
    session.invalidate();
    response.sendRedirect(url);
which traps the error but does not fix it.
where should i get redirected to?, and where does the "Home" variable get set?

  • Attempt to communicate to Newport MM4006 controllers via serial in new labview

I am attempting to communicate to a Newport MM4006 motion controller via labview, however the drivers built are for version LABVIEW 6i, and was worried about backward compatibility with the current version of Labview. Is there any support to show the best way of upgrading the VI systems to communicate and hence move three stages in parrallel.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Kind regards,
    Asiri

    Dear Asiri,
Thank you for your post to the forums.
I wanted to ask you a few questions in regards to the issue you are having:
    - You mention the drivers were built for LabVIEW 6. What version do you now have? What have you tried so far in regards to your application in the new version?
    - Are you looking for the equivalent functionality in the newer version, is that correct?
If you could provide me with more information on what exactly it is you are after that would be great!
In the meanwhile, from what I understood so far, I managed to find some relevant links for you to look at.
    - Upgrading from LabVIEW 8.6 or earlier
    - Converting VIs
    - Upgrading from LabVIEW 6
    - How to upgrade or revert a VI in a different version of LabVIEW
In case you haven't already got this downloaded, I have found the driver download for the MM4000 series motion controllers. This was on our 3rd party driver network.
    - Newport MM4000
    I hope this helps.
    Kind Regards,
    Dom C
