New Lacie 16x DVD Burner.  Burns iDVD but not SP3!

DVDSPro3 doesn't seem to recognize the new Lacie DVD burner, but iDVD does and burns disk. Does anyone know why SPro3 isn't recognizing the new burner? Cheers.

Hi Mark,
With the Panther (Mac OS X 10.3.9), you need this PatchBurn. Read the FAQ at the website. You probably can also get profile driver from LaCie.

  • LaCie d2 DVD Burner Does Not Read Discs

Anyone experienced a similar problem or have a solution?
I've just bought a LaCie d2 16X DVD burner w/ Lightscribe and have it connected through firewire to my 1Ghz iBook G4 running OS 10.4.7
iTunes 6 and Toast Titanium 7 recognize the burner, but when I insert a blank CD or DVD the burner doesn't read it and I get a 'no disc' message in Toast.
Neither burner nor discs appear on the desktop.
I've tried installing the latest LaCie Update Tool firmware from their website, but I just get the following message when I run it: "LaCie DVD Update Tool found a DVD drive CD/DVDW SH-S162L but there is no update available. (The firmware is at vLC00)."
That doesn't sound right. I've tried with a USB 2 hook-up and it still doesn't work.
Anyone know of any way to get the burner to recognize blank media? (I've tried it with different brands, being very careful that the disc is positioned in the middle of the tray. Nothing works).
    Thanks.

    2. You wrote: "Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)."You might want to take a look at the items concerning "burn support" on this XLR8YourMac page. In situations like this, sometimes one can burn from the iApps (iTunes, iDVD, etc.) but not from Finder or Disk Utility. I've not found specific documentation on that value, but I believe it means that the device can burn discs (Yes) but the method is not one supported in Mac OS X, i.e. it's not listed as a supported device in the DiscReording Framework.
Many folks have had luck getting their unsuported external optical drives to working with Patchburn. I've not used it, but it has helped innumerable folks.

Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,

  • Any Experience with LaCie Slim DVD burner?

    Hi~
i'd like to buy this external Slim LaCie's dvd burner...
but while reading the techSpec lines, i realized that , apparently, it does not require an extra power source, though it is via FireWire...
so i'd like to know how it works on PowerBooks or any other older Macs...
    thanks for ur comments...

Whilst I do not have direct experience of the DVD burner you have mentioned, I use both external desktop and portable burners.
The portable variety, like the LaCie, can be host-powered when connecting via FireWire though the drive may also come with a power adapter. Usually they include a copy Roxio Toast to do the burning. Whilst portable burners are not going to be as quick as desktop models, it should still be reasonably quick.
If you want ultimatee speed at the lowest price then a desktop model is better - you can probably buy several desktop burners for the price of one portable equivalent.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • I can send video to IDVD but not audio...

I shot it on my video camera, imported with Imovie, sent it to garageband to add chapters (markers) and then sent it to IDVD for burning. Am I needing to check some audio button or something? The dvd burns fine but no audio.
    Thanks.

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

It identified write restrictions, but my goal was to write a playable DVD and it fails in both my SuperDrive and off-the-shelf DVD players.
Thanks for the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the issue in this case. Is there some basic compatibility issue with using DVD+R media as a playable DVD for most off-the-shelf players?

    Hi
FIRST OF ALL - THE MAJOR ADVICE in this forum EVER !
In iDVD - Before Burning the DVD DO !
    Save as a DiskImage
Double click on this .img icon
test the new Pseudo DVD (looks like a white hard disk) with DVD-tool
    THEN
    • DVD Brand - matters
    • DVD type used - matters
    • BURN SPEED - matters
    • Audio file format - matters
    WHAT did You use
    I only use
    - Verbatim
    - DVD-R SL
    - x2 max x4 - Best / High - IS NOT BEST
    - .aiff - NO .mp3, .wma etc alient formats - from iTune EXPORTED OUT as .aiff ONLY

  • Adding a new CD or DVD Burner, need some help

The Sony CD-RW drive on my G4 DigAud 533 has died, so I tried to replace it with another Sony that I took out of a PC. The Model number and manufacture dates of the two units are very close, model # on both starts with CRX. But when I tried to burn a disc with the new one I got a message "unsupported device" or words to that effect. Is this just the comps way of telling me I need to install a driver? If so, can I download the driver over the 'net?
A related problem: I would like to add a DVD burner to a G3 B+W and have an NEC model ND-1300A, also out of a PC. The only drivers I have located for it refer to Windows, no Mac references. Is it possible to get this to work in a Mac, maybe wih 3rd party software like Toast ? Is there a listing of brand names that will definitely (or won't) work in a Mac? Both comps , by the way, are running OS 10.3.9. Thanx for any info. G-47

  • IDVD Burns Once, But Not Again

I think I might be adding to the whole "iDVD not burning in the last minutes after hours of waiting" theme. The trouble the last couple of days I have been having is I get the first disk to burn and everything looks good. When it asks if i want to burn a second one, I say yes and put in another DVD (Sony). Then it starts to burn and just before the end (a minute or so away) and the whole thing freezes. It ejects the disc unburned. So I am totally stumped. It has done this twice now. I will look for a cleaner, but is there another issue? Thanks everyone. - Carlyle

Can you save your iDVD project as a disk image file?
From within your iDVD project, go to File->Save as Disk Image
This process looks like the burning and will take just as long for the encoding, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. There are several advantages to saving your iDVD projects as disk image files.
It is more efficient and less stress on iDVD to burn your DVD disks from a disk image file.
You can save a disk image file and safely delete your iDVD project and all the media used in it since it is all encoded into the disk image file. This can save you drive space because usually a disk image file takes up less space than the project.
A disk image file can be transferred to an external drive or another computer.
It is a great backup for your project.
Many people have saved only the iDVD project and deleted the iMovie used in it and have been bitterly disappointed to discover that the iDVD project is useless without its media files available. An iDVD project should be thought of as a container with references to its media that iDVD pulls into the project just for the burn, but does not keep them there. The movies, photos and audio files remain where they are. If you move, change, rename or delete these, iDVD will not be able to locate them.
To create a disk image file:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6733.html
If the file is successfully created, you can test that it is ok by clicking on the file to mount it (you don't have to do anything with the files you see) then opening DVD Player (in Applications). The project should begin playing. If the project plays correctly, then you can burn your DVD disks from it using Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) following this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2087?viewlocale=en_US
If you are not able to create a disk image file that works, but you do already have a burned DVD-R disk that works, you can use it to create a disk image file and then use that file to burn more DVDs. See this for help with doing that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2059?viewlocale=en_US
    Other suggestions.....
Be sure you have enough free space for the burn. At least 20GB is recommended, but more is better
Use a recommended brand of DVD disk. Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden are the most recommended here. I use Verbatim DVD-R and have never had a burn issue with them. I have occasionally use Sonys and they seem ok, too.
Burn the DVD disks at a slow speed to get a more consistent burn...usually 4x or less.
Post back if you have more questions.

  • Burned iDVD, but audio won't playback on PC

On my Mac laptop, I used iDVD (version 7.0.4) to make a slideshow with music soundtrack (from iTunes playlist). I also added some short video clips to the DVD.
However, the burned DVD plays in our DVD player on TV just fine, but when I try to play it at work on my PC, there is no soundtrack or menu music.  The slideshow and videos are fine, just no sound for any of them!
When I play the DVD on my Mac laptop, it works just fine.
I have made these DVDs to send to family, so I am wondering if they'll only be able to play them on their TVs, and not their PC computers with sound??  Thanks for any help you can give!

I tried a commercial DVD in my computer's DVD player at work.  The sound worked fine playing it with the Power DVD player, but not with Windows Media Player.
I also tried the movie I burned with iDVD again with the same result...it plays with sound using Power DVD, but no sound with Windows Media Player.  Do you know what could be the problem with Windows Media Player? Thanks for your help.
(fyi...I can play music and CDs with WMP...)
