New LaCie d2 Quadra and New MBP - Prompts to install Rosetta??

New MBP running Snow Leopard (2 weeks old) + new LaCie d2 Quadra 1 TB (2 days old). Just ran into a curious issue. I need some guru help. Plugged everything in and intended to do my first Time Machine backup. The LaCie set-up assistant causes this message to appear: "To open LaCie Setup Assistant, you need to install Rosetta. Would you like to install it now?" No I don't want to install Rosetta. Does this mean I need to format the LaCie external drive? I never had to do this on my old MBP or with countless other (older) LaCie drives. If I HAVE TO reformat the LaCie drive...ummm...could someone talk me through that process? Or point me to a page that gives a step by step guide? This should be easier. Thanks.

I concur with Roger... I have 3 d2 Quadras...
“...simply erase the d2 formatting it in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using Disk Utility. Once done you have totally wiped it clean and reformatted... “
Have Never Used any Proprietary Software on any of my External Drives... and as a consequence have had NO Issues...
Cheers,

Are they daisy chained? Have you tried them one at a time? Have you tried a different FireWire cable? Do they show up in either system profiler or Disk Utility? Have you reset the SMC? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • Stupid, why download itunes and get a prompt to install a new version once running?

Why not put the new version to download on the site?
Why does it not install quicktime anymore? so stupid to have to do stuff over and over again and get all this stuff to work.
    KISS
    Keep It Simple Stupid!
Stop mucking stuff up and making it harder for us IT guys.

Plenty of non-IT guys and girls have no problem selecting Help/Check for Updates in iTunes and following any prompts they see. Whenever I've done this, or when iTunes has informed me that there is an update, I am given a choice to download, or not, everything I need, including Quicktime. I simply don't un-check the Quicktime download.
Since this is done in iTunes, there is no need to "download from the site".
Personally, I think it is simple. Mind you, I am an ex-IT guy.

  • Lacie Biggest Quadra and Airport Extreme

Is there some secret to getting the Biggest Quadra to work as a USB drive with the Airport Extreme? I can get the drive to show in the Airport Utility, and I can even get it to mount on the desktop, but I can't get it to write (and yes permissions are set to read/write). When I try to write a file, the finder turns into a spinning beachball until I unplug the drive. If I change the sharing properties and the base station restarts, then the Airport Utility won't see the unit again.
I've tried two airport extremes, both N, one gigabit and one fast, and I get the same results.
Unit works just fine when plugged into USB on iMac and MacBook Pro. Crazy results that are driving me crazy.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi All,
I have a Lacie 3 TB drive connected to the airport, and appears as a drive on the network, although I need to mount it every time I turn on the computer. It does not recognize it automatically. Here is how I set it up, and how it's accessed every time:
    - To set up the Lacie, it must be connected to the computer directly.
    - Open disk utilities, and in my case, I set it up as: MAC OS extended - the next option RAID Mirrored (because I have (2) 1.5 hard drives on my Lacie, and wanted one to back up the other. Basically, I followed LACIE's instructions to set it up, but directly connected to the computer as I mentioned.
    - After the disc was set up on the computer I connected to the USB port of the Airport. Make sure the you check the Airport Utility (in the Utilities folder), and setup the sharing settings for airport disks.
    - Every time when I turn on the computer I click on the GO tap, then NETWORK, click on the airport icon, and then on the LACIE icon. This way the computer connects with it. I haven't been able to find an automatic way to do this as when is connected directly to the computer.
    I hope this helps!!!
On the flip side I been having problems when dealing with lots of information, the Lacie gets disconnected and sometimes the network. In those cases I need to connect the Lacie directly to my computer. It's very annoying, and I'm posting about this issue today.
    Good luck.

  • The new mbp comes without instalation cd?

I just bought a MBP and it cames without any instalation cd or usb flash drive.  This is normal?
how can I reinstall the operating system without a cd or usb flash drive?
    thanks.

Lion Recovery is relatively easy to use. You can reinstall the Mac OS X via Wi-Fi in about 35 minutes with a high speed internet connection. And you can restore from a TimeMachine backup.
All very true, but I recommend people make a bootable Lion install DVD.
There is no guarantee that In the future you will be able to restore the operating system online.  Also, I can perceive many instances where the Internet is not available.  By creating a Lion install DVD you can protect yourself against future unknown situations.

  • New user prompt when installing recovery image

I'm deploying an Oobe image of Windows 7 home prem. and also a recovery partition with the same Oobe image.
When re-installing windows from the recovery partition (starting the recovery from windows) i get promtped to input a name for a new user. This does not happen when applying the image manually from WinPE.
I know this is not much infomation, but I am not sure what infomations is needed så please ask and I will add it to this post.

If your image has a staged answer file from sysprep from prior to capture, the reason would be because setup.exe ignores it. In order to get Setup.exe to install an image using an answer file, you'll need to customize windowsRE. See the following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744576%28WS.10%29.aspx
You can add your custom tool to run setup.exe with the /unattend switch.

  • Battery detoriates very fast in new MBP with Leopard installed

My just obtained MBP (3 days old) seems to have a peculiar problem. I started 3 days ago with the calibration cycle as advised by Apple. Now 4 cycles later only 87% of battery capacity is left. The battery drains during normal operation within 1.5 hours which i think is rather short. Furtheron since today the keyboard started to disfunction, not all the time but once a while, quite frustrating.
What can be the reason behind these strange behavior manners?

Try resetting the System Management Controller…

  • New MBP and installed wrong administrator

    Please help,
Yesterday I bought me a new MBP (lion) and wanted to transfer all the information from my previous MBP (died on me) from TimeCapsule.
First I could not get access with my administrator password which I use for years, so I reset the password. After that I let me access and did the transfer.
Problem is that there are 2 MBP's backed up on the TimeCapsule. Mine and my partner's.
When the transfer was finished, I freaked out as all the information from my partner's MBP was transfered to my new MBP instead of my data. Whatever I try, I cannot seem to be able to get my information. How can I erase my partners information and start all over again (clean start as if I just got it from the store ) and try to get my information from the TimeCapsule instead of my partners. I do not have a disc as it did not come with my new MBP (was already installed).
Is there a posibility to see what you are actually transferring from the TimeCapsule? It shows applications, documents which you can tick but not What information.
Bit annoyed as I am afraid that all my information is lost. I hope it is still in the TimeCapsule. I once did it before and everything went well in the past. Now I'm stuck with info from the wrong laptop.
    Thanks in advance!

You'll need to boot to the recovery HD, included on the internal HD, by holding down Command+r key combo or the Option key.
Once booted to the recovery HD you can wipe the Macintosh HD section of the internal drive and then reinstall Lion from the Apple online server. You'll need to have the computer connected to the internat to do the re-install.

  • How do I move my QT Pro from my old Powerbook to my new MBP?

I am replacing my PB with a MBP. How do I move/load my paid QT Pro from the PB to MBP?
    Thanks, 0-0bill

You can just type your registration code in the Quicktime preferences of your new MBP. The installed Quicktime Player application holds all the pro functions. It just needs to be unlocked.
To find your registration code open system preferences, click on quicktime and then click on the register tab
I think that you should then disable the Quicktime Pro function on your old computer as the licence is for one machine at a time.

  • I tried to install the new itunes but didnt install correctly

I tried to install the new version of itunes. it didnt download correctly. i uninstalled itunes and tried to download it again but I keep getting a message that the "apple device support " didnt download correctly and keeps showing me "windows error code 1114.

    Many thanks.
If it's saying it can't find the iTunes.msi or iTunes64.msi, we should try the following procedure.
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page).
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
Here's a screenshot showing the particular links on the page that you should be clicking:
After clicking one of the circled links, you should be taken to another page, and after a few seconds you should see a download dialog appear for the msicuu2.exe file. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like for me in Firefox:
Choose to Save the file. If the dialog box does not appear for you, click the link on the page that says "CLICK HERE IF IT DOES NOT". Here's a screenshot of the page with the relevant link circled:
When the dialog appears, choose to save the file.
    (2) Go to the Downloads area for your Web browser. Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • NEW iTUNES REFUSES TO INSTALL

i have tried everything and nothing works. when i installed itunes i saved it in a folder under tools. after i downloads a windows installer box appears saying "preparing to install." after that box disappears, nothing happens. the only time the itunes installation window appears is when my computer is shuting down. but i can't finish it because my computer is already in the middle of shutting down. it says that there is some sort of error, but i can't read it because the window only appears for less than a second. i've repeated this process several times, sometimes opting to "open" instead of "Save."
i tried installing an older version of itunes and it gave me error number 0x80040707. but it still managed to install successfully. but since it's an older version, it's not compatible with my ipod.
i've looked through the site and the forum, and nobody seems to have this particular problem with the installation.
i'm completely desparate and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • A New MBP (and one for the road: any highly-recommended external drive for.

If I order a new MBP 17" for architecture and planning grad program, will SL come installed on the machine? Is SL considered a whole new OS or jut an update to Leopard? I am not even sure I am wording the questions correctly, so I apologize if I am not. I stopped at Tiger because the Leopard OS looked a bit too intimidating for me back then but I think I can deal with it now. Is it a big set-back that I did not learn how to use Leopard and now I am getting SL?
thanks for any help in this area.
I will throw this out there. I also need a decent but very heavy duty external hard drive to use for the work done with CAD. Any recommendations on a top-of-the-line heavy duty external hard drive? I guess the case is the main thing but the drive should be able to take some extra abuse because I baby the MacBook Pros but sometime the external drives get the abuse. I think USB2.0 is good enough for what I need.
    Thanks Again

I would imagine that you could turn up good and bad reports on any drive. I have been highly satisfied with my 3 LaCies, two dating back to 2004. And, LaCie has very good phone support.
I use only clones and drag and drop for data changes between clonings. If I had to choose one method of backing up, then I definitely would use this process. Still, one can take a dual approach other than mine. The idea is to have a clone, which is updated fairly recently, to serve as a fail-safe, system backup, and restoration device. And, one could still use TM for day-to-day backups because of the flexibility it allows in moving backwards in time to retrieve data and because it updates automatically frequently. I want to experiment more with TM. So, I will move to this sort of dual system in the near future--as soon as I figure out which partition on my main external I can do without.
For cloning, I like SuperDuper because it has the ability to make incremental clones--thus, shortening the recloning process significantly. CCC is good, but I have never used it. Actully, Disk Utility is a highly respectable cloner, but it does not have as many options as the others, including not having the ability to make incremental clones.

  • Firewire 800 port on new MBP not mounting Lacie rugged 500GB drive

    Hi all
I've just purchased the new MBP 17" and my Lacie Rugged 500GB drive will not mount.
It will mount over USB though.
I've tried three different FW800 cables and no result.
There are some posts around 10.5.7 update issues, but I've tried everything listed and no dice.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had a Western Digital My Passport Studio model like that. It has nothing to do with cables or your laptop. It has to do with manufacturers who fail to adhere to the proper power standards for the interface. Basically, if the drive demands more power then the port will give, it is never going to work.
I returned my WD to Apple for a refund, and instead tried a SeaGate FreeAgent Go firewire 800 drive. It has worked flawlessly over Firewire on my MacBook Pro, and it even came with both a Fire 800 cable, a firewire 800-to-400 cable, a USB cable, and a special USB power cable so you could draw additional power off the USB ports if a firewire 800 port wasn't putting out sufficient power. That's why I bought it - figured one way or another it had to be able to work on bus power (even if it had taken both the firewire and USB bus in combo to do it).
Another option I've had good luck with in the past is OWC Mercury on the Go drives (eshop.macsales.com). These have always worked fine on bus power for me, but they also have an optional external power supply too, just in case.
