New LaCie external DVD player/writer

I recently purchase an external LaCie writemaster DVD unit at an Apple store. However, when I try to watch a movie, the icon doesn't appear on my desktop. I believe I've downloaded the software directly from the LaCie site and installed
What am I doing wrong?

The drive won't show up in Disk Utility without a disk in it, but it should show up in System Profiler, either under "Firewire" or "Disc Burning." Is it? If so, what does it say?
In iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Burning, is the DVD drive recognized?
Check System Preferences -> CD's & DVD's. What is the system set to do when you insert a video DVD?
Does other media, like you Powerbook's installer disk or a data CD, show up on the Desktop or in Finder windows when inserted into the drive? If not, are Finder preferences set to display CD's & DVD's on the Desktop and/or in the Finder Sidebar?
If the drive has an external power supply, is it connected to a known live (has power present) electrical outlet & to the drive, & is the drive switched on?

  • How do I burn a DVD on my new iMac to play on external DVD player

I have a new iMac at work (3.5 GHz Intel Core i7), running on OS X Yosemite, and I'm trying to figure out how to burn a DVD that can be played on an external DVD player. I have a disc burner connected, but just noticed that iDVD (the way I used to burn video files) is no longer part of my installed applications.
    Thanks for any help.
    JC

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Softwareor eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
If you're creating a slideshow in iPhoto and want to add it to an iDVD project export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

I have a Samsung external player/writer but it will not play movies.

I must have spent ten hours researching this.

VLC plays anything you throw at it.  At least 99.999999%.  What type of file (suffix) is this movie file?  Where did you get the movie from?

  • Looking for compatible external dvd-r writer

have a late 2009 27" imac, running osx 10.6.8; internal optic drive is not working (have been trying to burn dvd-r of photos/music for siblings), altho can still burn CD's.  have gotten "medium write error."  have repaired permissions on HD.  have tried memorex, staples brand dvd's.  actually purchased a samsung model thru amazon; it crashed my computer.  then i bought a GE lens cleaning disc which screwed up my itunes because it was an "audio" disc.  my most recent decision to buy a "superdrive" was also nixed because my imac (having originally come w/optical reader) is not supported w/superdrive.  i'm resigned to buying an external dvd-r writer/reader but am overwhelmed with all the info out there; i just need one that is compatible w/my imac.  if someone could just tell me which model to buy, i would greatly appreciate it; if you need further info, other than what i've supplied, would be happy to provide.  thanks to all ...

have tried memorex, staples brand dvd's.
Macs are notoriously finicky about the media you use. I only use Verbatim, never an off brand or store brand. So, that may be one problem. The other problem is that the Superdrives are super slim drives installed vertically where the media can shift 1/100th of an inch and cause a problem - in other words, they are not very reliable. I've had two replaced under warranty even though I have used an external DVD burner most of the time for years. I had a LaCie for about 14 years before it malfunctioned and just bought a new one from OWC. It is doing great - I've burned about 10 DVDs so far.

  • LaCie External DVD R/RW - can it play regular video dvds on my iBook?

So I've got this LaCie external DVD R/RW drive (designed by Porshe - but who cares?) and I can wiret and re-write dvds of data okay. I use it for backing up my files sometimes, and just extra storage space... But I don't seem to be able to watch a regular DVD movie on my iBook using this external drive (and the disc drive in the iBook is just a CD-ROM that's it.)
So, I'm just wondering if the Apple iBook G3 is even capable of playing a regular DVD video? I have this suspicion that this iBook's Graphics hardware just might not be up to the DVD movie playing requirements?
Is that my problem? Or is there something I can do? Thanks in advance.

Nevermind I just got VLC and that seems to play the DVD alright.
I've had this drive for a little over a year now, and I had basically writen off my iBooks ability to play DVDs because "DVD Player" the application that comes with the O/S said it wasn't possible, well, VLC proved DVD Player wrong.

  • External DVD Re-writer.

    Hi (again!) folks,
My iMac doesn't have a Superdrive, so I'm looking to add an external DVD re-writer to my set-up.
Can anyone recommend brands/models which work well with the iMac G5? I know that they're not split into PC ones and Mac ones, but I'd like to know which brands offer the best performance with the iMac before I splash out.
    Cheers.

    Thanks macthew,
In this months MacFormat, they received the new Lacie LightScribe d2 DVD writer. Specs are:
    Read: 40x(CD), 16x(DVD).
    Write: 40x(CD), 8x(DVD), 2.4x(DVD+R DL).
    Rewrite: 24x(CD), 4x(DVD+RW).
It got 3 out of 5, and it's a lovely looking drive.
    For:
    Great Optical Drive
    Dual Layer
    Nice Design
    Against:
    Slow to etch
    Pricey media
    Single colour
Not a great deal in the Pro/Cons to put you off either way, but since DVD writing is new to me, I'd appreciate if you could give me your thoughts on those specs I listed?
The drive retails for £129 which isn't too bad I think.
    Cheers.

  • How Do I Use my MacBook Pro to Watch a DVD From External DVD Player

    Hello Everyone!
While waiting for Apple TV to become available in my place of work, I want to use my MacBook Pro monitor for watching a DVD movie played on an external DVD player. The DVD player I have is an LPC-D1000, which is a new model. While Mac has its own DVD player, I'm trying to make use of my LG DVD player. If that's possible, please guide me on how to do it.
    Thank you.

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

  • How do I use iMac as monitor for external DVD player (HDMI to Mini DisplayPort)

iMac 27" (late 2009).  Internal DVD is region locked.  I would like to use an external DVD player to watch DVD's from other regions.
I can't use the new Apple SuperDrive because they say it's not compatible with iMac's before 2012. (Is it??)
My iMac doesn't have Thunderbolt.  It has mini displayport.
I have resigned to getting a generic DVD player and plugging it into the screen.
I have found this in Apple support pages...
Can I use the iMac in TDM as a display for my gaming console, DVD player, or other device?
The Mini DisplayPort port on a supported iMac can receive DisplayPort compliant video and audio signals. Converters not made by Apple may provide options to convert other electrical, video, and audio protocols to Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt compliant signals.
What is DisplayPort compliant video and audio signals?  Does HDMI fit into that signal type?
Is it possible to get an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort converter?
Will it work if I get a generic DVD player with HDMI output? (and connect it to the iMac through MiniDisplayPort)

    First try VLC.
    <http://www.videolan.org>
On many Macs, it will play DVDs even if the region codes don't match.
The Apple SuperDrive should work if you use the terminal (Utilities foldsr) command:
    sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1"
There are also non-Apple USB or FireWire external DVD (and Blu-ray) drives, such as:
    <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/>
Apple's DVD player may not work with external drives, but you can use VLC or Blu-ray™ Player
    <http://www.macblurayplayer.com>
There is a converter to connect HDMI to the iMac via TDM
    <http://www.kanexlive.com/xd>
but it will run at 720p (1280 x 720) and may have problems with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) on HDMI from Blu-ray or DVD players.

  • Hooking up external dvd player

I am trying to use an external dvd player ( memorex ) I have tried playing two dvd windows based games ( quake 2 and rage from 1998 ) my laptop only shows it as a music cd. IS there settings i can change to be able to play games?

    @mjg6300 ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  This is a good question you are posing.  In most cases when you put your cd in this dvd player can you go and open the cd up in file mode so you can see all the files.
If you can then your issue is with the formatting.  There are formatting changes that may not be seen from back then.  The file structure on the cd may be FAT 16 or FAT 32 and with the NTFS file structure in the newer version of windows may not be able to see this.
Have you tried it on other systems.  If you have what Operating System.  If you can read the disk at all on your computer it is not your external or your computer.
Please post back with any information you can.  Try other computers.  Try different Operating systems from back then.  Windows 95 and windows 98 where strong back then and this disk may not play on any thing higher than Windows XP.
Here is a link that may help you.

I bought the external DVD player/burner for my Macbook.  I tried using it with my Dell laptop but it will not work.  Is it not configured to work with anything but apple operating systems?

If you purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive, it will only work with select Apple devices. It won't work, for example, on my Late 2011 model that has a SuperDrive built-in, but it will work with an Air, Retina model, new 'drive-less' iMacs, etc.
As far as I know, though, you can only hack the drive to work with some other Apple devices, but not with Windows PCs. Which is a shame as other, less expensive DVD/CD devices will work with just about any machine.

  • ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0??

Hi, one of the largest online selling and buying website in New Zealand, trademe, has listed via a buyer a ThinkPad External DVD Reader / Writer USB 2.0. One of my friend bought it and found that it is shown on the computer hard drve as a Philips DVD RAM SDVD 8821 HUSB. The buyer claimed that it is a genuine product bought from IBM shop. I am asking if there is a possibility for that to happen? If it is a fake product of IBM, is my friend liable to buying fake stuff. I think she was duped to think it is a genuine product. I asked this question via the IBM Australia. The respondent told me the model number was "Part Number - 43N3264". I had a search on google and the part number of the leveno external drive is not similar to the one I bought from the online shop. Mine one has got the logo of "thinkpad" on the bottom right hand corner. Whereas the external drive with the part number 43N3264 had the logo of leveno on the bottom left hand side. That's why I need to ask you in this inquiry. Intuitively, I don't think "thinkpad" has manufactured external drive. It has only been used as laptop models. Thanks for your attention.

there are several fake ones on the market, some are well made while others are not.
AFAIK the genuine one don't have a thinkpad logo, but rather a Lenovo logo.

  • Imaging from external DVD player or an external usb hard drive

    Hey,
At the High School i work at we are running Netware 6.0 SP5 and Zenworks
4.01 ir6. We have Zen Partitions installed on most computers to store a
local image in case the the computer needs to be re-imaged.
However, we have a dilemma. Every now and then a hard drive will go in a
    computer.
When we replace the hard drive with a new one, we install the Zen
Partition, do the config and then our last step is to bring down an image.
Unfortunately our only means of dropping down an image is from the network
either through normal imaging or through multicast sessions.
When we drop an image down from the network which takes up network
bandwidth, it causes slow downs on the users computers and they start
complaining. Our network is running at 100mb.
Is there any way possible to image from an external DVD player or an
external usb hard drive when dropping down an image to a new hard drive in
the computer? Currently I have all my Zen Images on the external USB
Maxtor 160gb hard drive and I also have Zen Images burnt to DVD's.
If so, how do I go about doing this and is there documents on doing this?
    Thanks!!!

  • HP Pavilion HDX9000 Connect to External DVD Player

Our older HP Pavilion HDX9000 DVD died and we wanted to use an external DVD player to drive the monitor on the HDX9000.   It does not seem possible to do this despite the HDMI and many other ports.  The PC is running Vista.   Any suggestions?

    Hi,
What is your external DVD player ? There are many USB DVD players for under $50 and you can use it as internal DVD player. You can't use DVD player from your home Hi Fi system because no available port on your computer to plug it in.

I am trying to turn my Sony 8mm Handicam video into DVD through my MACBOOK PRO.  Unfortunately my DVD function no longer works.  Apple won't repair, no longer carries the parts.  Referred to Apple repair shop.  Gentleman there said it cost the same to purchase an external DVD player as repair the MACBOOK.  So far, I have purchased two, including Apple's.  Neither works with my MACBOOK.  Any ideas or suggestions?

    Hi rgneil:
Yeah, keeping an older machine running has it's challenges.
Have you tried one of the DVD burners from Other World Computing?  Their sales support can probably guide you to one that should work.  The OWC burner that I use with my 2009 17-inch MacBook Pro has FireWire and USB2 connectors.
Are you using iMovie/iDVD or Final Cut Pro/DVD Studio Pro?  And, do you have Roxio Toast?
If all else fails, you could try a stand alone DVD-Recorder.  You'd want to pick a model that supports external video input.  I have a LiteON DVD-Recorder that I patch VHS, Regular8 and Hi8 decks to now and again just to get stuff off tape to DVD-R.
Report back on what works (or continues to not work) for you.
    Burn on!
