New Laptop - Big Problems

...or rather, prob not. I'm just being a bit useless.
My problem is this - I hope that you can help.
My old powerbook died a death a few weeks ago, but thankfully my music was stored on an external drive.
I've just invested in a new macbook air (woo!) and am trying to set up iTunes to recognise the external drive as the source of all my music files - rather than copying them to the laptop's hard drive.
I know I must be being bloody daft, there must be a simple way of doing this - but I just can't work it out.
Please - can anyone help?

in iTunes, go preferences > advanced and disable +*copy files to ... when adding to library+*.
next, choose +add to library+ from the file menu and select the folder containing your media files.
when done, you might want to point +*iTunes media folder location+* to the external drive and re-enable the +*copy files to ... when adding to library+* option. that will ensure iTunes is putting any newly added content there.
be sure the external is mounted on your desktop before you launch iTunes from now on.

  • New laptop, sync problem! HELP!

Hello!! A few weeks ago, my old laptop suddenly got a virus, and it was quickly corrupted and destroyed. I had no time to back up my songs on iTunes! I now have a new laptop, but when I plugged my iPod touch into it, it only transferred the PURCHASED songs!! I really need to know if there is any possible way to transfer ALL the songs onto iTunes. If not, will the songs get deleted from my iPod touch if I sync it to my laptop? I really hope not, since I no longer have the CDs that I imported the music from years ago. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

The purpose of a backup is to ALWAYS have a copy of your important info/pics/music/docs/etc in case something unexpected happens.
You do not begin to backup when you are having problems. Computers/hard drives do not always announce their pending failure. This why you maintain a backup.
You can try a search for a third party program at your risk (this is not supported nor endorsed by Apple).

  • New laptop has problems already

My new i72630QM showed up with problems out of the box. The WMP12 and windows media center are not recognizing new music. Troubleshooting indicates corrupted library. What and how?? Tech support tells me to reformat....this is incomprehensible. Before they told me to reformat they suggest I call Microsoft since its the OS guess what Microsoft said......pay me 60 bucks .  Since this laptop is less the 30 days old can I please give it back to you???

can you please have some dignity to reply to this thread ?
I am unhappy with the way HP support working !!!

  • New Laptop Battery problem

Hello, I just bought a new HP laptop MODEL: 2000-219DX  last week Friday from best buy but apparently the battery never took charge. I contacted the HP technical support and after some troubleshooting and testing the battery they advised me to take it in for service. I live in the Bahamas and the laptop is still under warranty, therefore I'm not able to bring it back there. What can I do to resolve this situation?

    Hello Ruvane,
Sorry to hear that you have an issue with your battery.  If you have done troubleshooting with HP and it was determined that the battery is defective, HP will normally send a replacement battery.  I am confused by your statement that you were advised to take to a service center.  Additionally, I am concerned that the you are having an issue with a new notebook.   I will send you a private email in which I will request additional information.
    Regards,

  • Berry 9360 - new and big problems...

    Hi
I recently got my new blackberry 9360, very excited about my new phone, only to find numerous problems with it.. I set up email, social networks, bbm and tried some new stuff, but a few days ago the phone was heating up after charging. I took it back o the service provider and the manager reset the lighting and the network to 2GB, but still found that the phone was getting really hot after charging it.  Also every time I updated the profile picture on bbm nobody else could see it... Has anyone else experienced these problems?

no problem! glad you're up and running again.

  • New iTunes: Big Problems

I bit the bullet this week and downloaded Mountain Lion and the new iTunes. Mountain Lion was a piece of cake, but iTunes is causing me no end of problems; in fact I have been swearing at my computer for a couple of days in frustration. I'll detail my concerns:
    1. I use iTunes most days to compile playlists for a radio station. I burn the playlists to CD and copy the written info to a Pages document to use as a script. In the new iTunes I can no longer Command A, Command C and Command V to paste the data into Pages. It just won't do it. When I Select All and drag the data, it now drags the actual files into Pages rather than the data. To work around this issue, I had to copy each file to Pages individually which took about 15 mins instead of the usual 10 seconds. How is this an improvement?
How can I just copy the written data info into a document?
    2. I can no longer drag individual items from a play list into a new playlist or an existing playlist. Yes, I know this is a NEW iTunes but did they have to change everything? And for what reason?
For the first time in 12 years as an Apple customer, I have come across a product that doesn't make it in the intuitive stakes. This new model reminds me of a Windows product; nothing works logically.
Please tell me is isn't just me having these issues and if you can help with the above problems I would be very grateful.

When you get these error messages, you need to try using The Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility to clean up your installer files.
    Here is a method:
    == uninstall with cleanup ==
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program. The installer doesn't give any message to confirm the installation.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
(To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install)
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes.

  • New Ipod, Big problems

I just got a new ipod shipped to me due to my other one overheating, I was wondering how do i install my ipod on my comp i am using Windows Xp Pro and ecerytime i plug in my ipod itunes doesnt read it. I lost the cd software that came with my original one wat should i do

    Marco,
From the link Bryan provided, you need to download the updater, install to your computer, run the updater program, connect the iPod when prompted (not before), and format it for Windows use.
From your posts, it's not clear (at least to me) that you are doing this.

  • Bought new ram BIG PROBLEM

i bought a 1GB stick of ram to replace my 512. it meets all the standards
    184pin
    400mhz
    pc3200
no more than 16 ram modules
    unbuffered
i put it in....ect.....turned it on, got a beep noise and that was it
    any ideas ?

I think it might be best to take your question along with the original one in the 'Apps closing themselves' thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=251471&tstart=0 simply because this does not sound like a 'normal' faulty RAM issue as being discussed here.
Generally speaking, faulty RAM will cause unpredictable crashes, usually of the entire system, sometimes by a kernel panic (where the screen goes grey and you see a message to restart the system in several languages). Thus, rather than risk you getting multiple responses that may become difficult to keep track of, I'd suggest focussing on the other thread where your problem and that of the OP sound very similar.

  • To format or not to format - New computer: big problem

I bought a new PC, installed IPod+ITunes but it prompts to format my IPod when I plug it in. Although I have all my music in my hard drive, ITunes did not load neither my playlists nor my ratings, so I need to synchronize to avoid losing that information. So, I´m stuck here as I guess that formatting my IPod will erase all data in it. Any suggestions, please??!!

    Thanx BD.
As an additional question to the masses: Any pet favorites for HD's? as regards reliability, speed, price? looking at 500GB.
I have an Acomdata I've been happy with, had a Maxtor fail..Thanx in adavnce to any and all input. Keep in mind this drive will travel a little, the two other external drives I've owned lived on my desk...It doesn't need to have a small form factor, just looking for reliability

  • I cant get itunes on my new laptop.  My laptop says I have to remove itunes from another computer as I can only have it on 5.  Problem is that apart from my ipad, I no longer have the others as they were either broken beyond repair or lost.  Any ideas?

I am not good with computers.  I am trying to get my iTunes onto this new laptop but it says I am only allowed to have it on 5 computers and I must take it off one to ut it on this new laptop.  Problem is, apart from my iPad, I have lost one laptop and two have been broken beyond repair so I am unable to take it off!  Anyone any ideas?  I have tried to get iTunes support but cant get past the "date of purchase" as I can only guess when I bought my ipod (2009)

    Hang on...
You can only authorise the songs you purchase from the iTunes Store to play on five computers.
You can download and install iTunes (the iTunes programme) onto as many computers as you wish.
    Two different things.
Assuming therefore, that your problem is that you have authorised five computers, but now no longer have some of them, you need to de-authorise all your computers and then re-authorise the computers you still have.
To de-authorise your computers, go to your account in the iTunes Store and look for the Deauthorise All button.

  • New laptop not charge battery

I just bought Pro book 440 g1 for 2 day, and now i can not charge the battery.
    1. when the laptop power off, the battery led is not light, and not charge ( i see the battery 97% in windows, after 30 minutes, it's still 97%).
    2. when i am in windows, the power manage said that "it's pluged in but not charging", and my laptop use AC power not battery.
    I've tried:
    1. unistall microsoft battery driver and re install the driver but it's not work.
    2. try to remove the battery then press power button in 1 minutes, and put the battery in, when i put battery in see the battery led light only once, then plugin in adapter but it's not work.
    3. The adapter is woking well.
Please help me! Why the new laptop have problem.

Certainly. Assuming you have being using this PowerBook for some time, I would recommend first backing up any important files to CD, DVD, or external drive, as you will be completely erasing the contents of the hard drive using my method.
The discs that came with your PowerBook should include one labelled something like "PowerBook G4 15-inch and 17-inch Mac OS X Install Disc 1". If you insert this disc into your PowerBook, you will see an application on the disc entitled "Install Mac OS X" (or similar). If you run this program, it will restart your PowerBook and enter the OS X installer.
During the process of going through this installer, at some stage (I can't remember exactly when) a button entitled "Customize" or "Options" will appear. If you click on this, it will give you several options for your new install of OS X - "Upgrade and Install", "Archive and Install", and "Erase and Install".
I don't personally know if the other two would have any effect on your battery issues, as I haven't tried them myself in regard to this particular program. Again, I must stress that if you follow this method you will erase all data from your hard drive during the process, and lose any of your documents etc. I would recommend backing up all of your data prior to trying this as a method. The Apple Store or AppleCare may also be able to offer more information on the Erase & Install method or backing up your data.
I hope that's of some use to you,
    Tim Whitmore

  • I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything to the new laptop.  BUT I'm having some real problems--e.g., wg from my older one to the new one.  Both use the same latest version of Snow Leopard.  My new laptop has the newer track pad.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro.  I managed to transfer everything from my older MacBook Pro to the new one.  Both use Snow Leopard, the latest update.
My new one has the newest trackpad, the old one, no.
I'm have big problems using Text Edit on the new laptop--the curser does not go where I want it to go for editing, I cannot get the text to be a clear or as large
as with the older Laptop.  Similarly, I cannot find a way to enlarge the menu bar.  But the text edit is my biggest problem right now.  I have reviewed all the preferences, particularly those in Universal Access, to no avail.
I finally gave up, used dropbox to send the text edit document to my old laptop, and continued with ease.  But this is not the way it should work.  I bought the
new laptop because the old one is showing signs of age.....
Is there something wrong with Text Edit while using the new trackpad?

    Thanks, Sig.
The old computer is a 2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
The new one is a 2.3 GHz intel core i7
In going over this, thanks to "tallking it out" with you, I did discover the Text Edit problem.  Because I've still been unable to get the new computer text size (fonts or whatever) to match the old computer, I did not notice that the curser is now different--the line midway down the curser has to be placed on the line I am working upon, otherwise the edits go elsewhere on the page.  Now, with a bit of difficulty, I am able to get Text Edit to work correctly.
If you have any ideas as to why my menu bar and Text Edit type are still so slow, I'd love to have them.
(I went through the process you suggested earlier, re my Trackpad preferences, and found no improvement.)

  • Please help meeee!! Problems with library and syncing on new laptop

Hi I've bought a new laptop and want to start using itunes on the new one, however:
Problem 1- Even though I've enabled both devices and have clicked on the home sharing, only the songs I have purchased from itunes show in my library and playlists (I managed to import my playlist titles by copying the file and emailing it to myself but it won't show songs other than those purchased from itunes) How can I get the library to show the 500 odd songs I've painstakingly spent importing to itunes on my old, slow laptop? If I have to do them all again I may just have a breakdown!!!
Problem 2- Have imported a CD into itunes library using my new laptop but it won't show on my ipod after syncing it. I think I have enough space cos the bottom bar says 3.26 GB free!
I'm really not very techie and don't use itunes much so there may be something glaringly obvious that I'm doing wrong. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it
    Thanks
    Cheryl

Home Sharing doesn't really matter, if you plan to stop using the old computer for iTunes.
    Apple has this document
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
You should use the method titled External drive. If you use this method, you can ignore the rest of the document.
The details are in the document, but to summarize this process (so that you have the "big picture" before reading the details)...
You are copying your iTunes folder from the old laptop to the external drive, and then copying that iTunes folder from the external drive to the new laptop.  When you copy the iTunes folder to the new laptop, you are replacing the existing iTunes folder.  The next time you start up iTunes on the new laptop, it will use the iTunes folder from the old laptop, and it should look like iTunes running on the old laptop.
When you read through the document, it may be easier to understand if you keep my "overview" in mind. Please ask any questions you may have about the "details" in the document.
NOTE:  If you have new songs on the new laptop that are not in your old laptop's iTunes library, you need to keep the existing iTunes folder on the new laptop.  After you have successfully transfered your iTunes folder from the old laptop to the new laptop, and everything is OK when you run iTunes on the new laptop, THEN add the new songs.  This is in the document.
You should put Problem 2 aside until the above is completed.
