New laptop config and Aperture

Hello all
I've just acquired one of the new MacBook Pros (a gigantic leap from my previous 15" PowerBook 1.67) and I am now fully up-to-date with Aperture once again. Photography is just a hobby and my Aperture library is only 9.8 GB (no previews, referenced files on external).
I have just removed the optical bay and replaced it with a 120GB SSD plus the original HDD. I have configured it so OS and apps are on the SSD while my home folder is on the HDD. But I'm wondering if this is the best configuration.
As my Aperture library is small and there is still plenty of room on my SSD, would it be better to have it there in a separate folder (outside home folder if that's possible) or should I put my home folder back on the SSD for current projects, but using separate folders on the HDD for longer term storage?
Thanks for any suggestions
Ross

The AP Library should be on the SSD. IMO the SSD should preferentially be used for the OS, apps, the referenced Aperture Library and for Photoshop Scratch.
And do not be afraid to have Previews, they are very useful and your new MBP can handle them just fine. Set Preview size to be the pixel dimensions of your MBP display, and build Previews manually when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture. Initially let the box run overnight or as needed to build the Previews.

I have a new laptop/pc, and I am trying to set up iTunes on it; but I want to keep content on an external drive (lots of movies/books/etc.).   I know I will not be able to see when not hooked up to that drive, or sync with out it.  What is the best way to go about setting this up.

    Hi drnels,
Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.
    Hopefully this helps!

    Go into your Applications folder
Find the app named Install Mac OS X Lion.app
Move that app to the trash
    relaunch The App Store
    go to your Purchased list
Click on install next to Lion
    It will re-download the installer

  • New MacBook trackpads and Aperture

    Howdy,
Is anyone having as much of an issue with the new trackpads and their being super sensitive in Aperture? I have been using a lot of other apps and they are not so sensitive. I have my thumb on the trackpad to click, out of habit, and my fingers roaming the trackpad, but depending on what screen I am in or what I have selected, I end up rotating or resizing or something I don't want, instead of the app just ignoring my thumb, like it seems to be ignored in other apps.
I am up to date on Leopard, Aperture, trackpad firmware, etc.
Anybody else having this issue or is it my imagination?

    Gary,
I've been having zero trouble with the trackpad and Aperture on my unibody MBP. FWIW, I ran software update as soon as I got it, which installed the trackpad firmware update. I've been using Aperture almost daily on it and never once accidentally rotated a image, etc. I suspect that habits that didn't cause a problem with earlier trackpads cause all sort of havoc with the new multitouch ones.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?

  • New MacBook Pro and Aperture 2

I just bought a new computer and have Aperture 2. Is there anyway to get it to work with the Snow Leopard? I really don't want to buy the new Aperture if I don't have to. Any advice would be great!
    Thanks All!

Yes, Install it and run Software Update to bring it up to 2.1.4 and it will run.

  • New to Mac and Aperture

Hi I have worked with Photoshop since '98. I have a Mac and downloaded the trial of Aperture 3. Is there a way(like in photoshop) to change the resolution of the photo? Where? I clicked on my photo, went to Metadata. Not familiar with this. Is there a way to adjust the resolution so I can post to the web at 72? Any answer is appreciated. Thank you!

The workflow in aperture follows a design principle that your master images are never altered. They are treated like negatives in your library, and you make "prints" (versions) that are altered.
You then Export the versions you want to the file size and file type you want.
So highlight the image, and go to file->export version, and choose or customize your presets there. Make sure to change it to sRGB if you are posting to the web, and choose the pixel size you want. (72 dpi doesn't mean anything in regards to how big the image is, it just means that if you were to print it, one inch would contain 72x72 pixels.)

  • My laptop was stolen a few months ago, I have all of my music and photos saved to my iphone. I just got a new laptop today, and downloaded itunes and signed into my old account. How can I transfer my stuff from my iphone to my laptop?

Please help, I don't want to lose my pictures or music!

Music purchased from the iTuens store can be transferred using iTunes.  However, music from other sources can only be transferred from your phone using 3rd party software such as PhoneView (mac) or Touch Copy (pc or mac).  These articles will show you how to start syncing with your new computer with minimal or no data loss:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • I've recently bought a new laptop (win7) and I can't edit any songs on my iTunes.

I've done all the advice I've seen online, such as change the security permissions on my iTunes folder AND my music folder, as I keep everything stored on my external harddrive, but NOTHING IS WORKING!!!
I keep going back to see if it's changed back to its original settings and it seems to keep doing that, every time I un check the read only box on both iTunes and my music files, I apply the changes but it just checks the bloody box again.
I really have no idea what to do, can anyone help?

    It doesn't help?
It's a big article, with pointers to others. You can recover iTunes purchases directly from the devices, you may be able to recover other iTunes purchases from the iTunes Store, depending on your region. For any other media on the devices you will need the assistance of third party tools, or use the manual extraction techniques.
Note each device can hold protected content from up to five different accounts. Perhaps someone in the family has loaded up media from a friend's library.

My itunes is on an old computer.  So old that I can't update it and so Haven't used it in two years.  How can I move it to my new laptop and make sure this doesn't happen again?  Very frustrated that I've spend $$ but can't get my music.
I want so set up itunes on my laptop and make sure that I get all of my old music and any music shared from my sons' itunes accounts.  Do I have to set up itunes on my new laptop first and then use the same logins?  Really concerned about losing any music, etc.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • What Firefox version choices do I have for using Firefox on new laptop running Win 7 64-bit, and how do I move bookmarks from current laptop running Firefox 3.5.13 to new laptop?

Currently running Firefox 3.5.13 on laptop using Windows XP pro sp3 and will want to move my bookmarks to a new laptop. New laptop uses Win 7 pro 64-bit OS. I have read too many conflicting reports about Firefox and Win 7 and understand that Firefox is working on a true 64-bit version. What are my choices for a stable web browser for new laptop and which particular version of Firefox is recommended and the pros and cons of that suggestion? (I believe one can run Firefox 32 bit version in the 64 bit environment, but is that the best choice?) I have not installed Firefox on new laptop yet and am eager to dump IE. This is being posted from my old laptop. Thanks ...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Details.aspx?type=Software&p=Mozilla%20Firefox&v=Mozilla&uid=3&l=en&pf=0&pi=0&c=Communication%20%26%20Internet&sc=Web%20Browsers%20%26%20Plug-Ins&os=64-bit
If you go to this link you will be assured by Microsoft and Win7 "new" app checking and making sure that all drivers and software you have is compatible with Win7 64 bit. And in this article it states that Firefox version 3 IS compatible and designed for 64 bit OS, hm mm well as you know that is incorrect!! As of today Mozilla Firefox is not designed for a 64 bit computer. Thank you for your honesty and it saved me a big headache By being upnt and honest. my books!! Great job!!

  • Moved library to new laptop, but it didn't take all playlists and apps

I got a new laptop recently and have been trying to phase out my old desktop. I followed the instructions for moving/importing your library. Things were made a bit simpler (I think) because my library was held on an external HD that I now have connected to teh laptop so there wasn't a lot of file moving involved. The trick now is that I open iTunes and it lists all of my playlists, but only the smart playlists still have all the associated songs. The "regular" playlists are all empty and the main window instructs me to add music by dragging it to the playlist, etc.. Also, when I connect my iPhone and attempt to sync, I can see that a large portion of the apps currently on my phone do not appear on iTunes. I get a message warning me that syncing will erase and overwrite what's currently on my phone so I've avoided syncing for several weeks now.
I still have my original desktop with iTunes installed and I only need to connect the original external drive to get back to where I was before the move. I haven't deleted anything so I could try it all again, but I would imagine the same results. Is there something I've missed? I tried asking at the apple store and was told the only solution was to create all of my playlists again "by hand" and then contact itunes to see if they would "allow" me to get credit for all the missing apps and then purchase them again from the store. There has to be another way.
Thanks for reading and any help you can offer

When you copied the music from your old computer you should have included the iTunes database (iTunes Library.itl) as well as your media files - this is the structure (normally in C:\Users\username\Music) that you should copy from old to new:
If you only copied the media, and not the database file, try doing so now (without iTunes running) - the files and folder structures should be the same on your new PC as on your old one.
Then hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes; you'll get this prompt:
Click on Choose Library..., then browse to and select the iTunes Library.itl file that you just copied.  Your library should now be in the state that it was on your old machine, including your playlists.

  • Best way to switch to new laptop?

Hi all. I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro that I'm experiencing a lot of lag with (iTunes stuttering, mouse delays, etc.). I've spent a fair amount of time troubleshooting and haven't come up with anything that has helped. I'm about due for a new laptop anyway and with the release of the new MacBooks I figure it's probably time to pull the trigger.
I've spent a good deal of time configuring my system and setting up Quicksilver and everything. I'd prefer to not have to do that all over again. I have a Time Machine backup and would like to use that, if possible, to move everything over to the new machine.
Given the issue with the lag, part of me thinks a clean operating system install would be best. However, unless I'm missing something, I think that would mean having to go in and install all my apps, re-config prefs, etc. I really want to avoid that.
My thought was to try to just move everything over from the Time Machine backup and see if the new hardware fixes things. Then if not, either spend more time trying to fix the issue or do a clean reinstall and bite the bullet on reconfiguring everything.
Does that sound like the best way to proceed?
P.S. Is it as easy as it seems like it might be to move all data, apps, prefs from one machine to another using Time Machine or is it more complicated?

The best way is to use Migration Assistant. When you start up your new machine you will be asked whether you want to migrate data from another machine. This involves connecting them by Firewire cable and starting the source machine in FireWire Target Disk Mode. (New updates may allow doing this via USB, but I don't know how this works).
You should do this before setting up any user accounts on the new Mac, and should choose to import the user(s) from the old one. You can choose whether to bring applications over: if it's the same version of Leopard this would probably be OK, but many people feel it's better to reinstall. In any event it won't over-write the included Apple applications such as Safari.
When you have done this you will find your Home Folder there intact, and registered programs will still be registered (unless the registration depends on the particular computer); all your data will be there, including bookmarks and contacts etc.

  • New laptop imap but iphone currently pop. Can I change without losing anything?

    Good Afternoon.
Apologies if this has been asked I have tried to search but didnt quite understand some of the answers.
My partner currently has his iphone set up using pop.
Yesterday we set his new laptop up and I set email up using imap.
I am not sure if there is going to be any conflict.
We simply want to be able to use either phone or latop and the other to respond to what he has done if that makes sense. If he puts an  email in a folder on his phone we want the same to happen on his laptop. If he deletes an email we want it to disappear from the other  device. In other words we want each to act like the other.
I believe he may need his phone to be set to imap for this.
How do I change it to imap as i am worried if I delete account before setting up an imap account on his phone he may lose all the emails currently on his phone.
Can you change from pop to imap without losing anything.
Thank you. If your answers could be kept as simple as possible I would appreciate it as not very technical with either iphone or laptop.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend.

If the account is an IMAP account, deleting the account on the phone will not affect any emails still on the server unless you delete these emails directly on the phone. So, first delete the account on the phone, the add the account back, this time setting it up as IMAP.
