New laptop, library is gone

So i got a new laptop and my library is just gone, how do i get it back?

*If i hook up my ipod to this comupter and sync it will all my songs that are on my ipod disappear?*
Yes they will.
Before you connect your iPod open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. In manual mode you can drag and drop new content to the iPod from iTunes without erasing what's currently on it: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
If you want to recover the music from the iPod and transfer it to your new computer there are a few things you can do. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Once you have recovered everything from the iPod and your iTunes library has been rebuilt it will be safe to sync again.
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • ITunes wants to replace IPod contents with New Laptop Library

Help please guys. Please bear with me while I will try and explain what my problem is.
Purchased new laptop, loaded ITunes, authorised laptop as the 3rd of my 5 allowable computers, then finally transferred all purchased content to my Laptop via my IPod. I have since purchased various TV shows and songs off ITunes to my Laptop ITunes library. I have only now tried to sync my IPod for the first time with my Laptop and noticed that ITunes did not sync this new content. I then discovered that the reason for this may have been due to all the sync options were unchecked for all the media types which would explain why nothing happened.
Simple, I thought. I would check all the media types for sync and end of. No such luck. Each time I checked the option to sync any of the media type; a message would appear to warn me that the contents of my IPod would be replaced by the contents of my ITunes library. This I do not want. I wish to keep all my purchased content held on both my laptop and my IPod. Isn’t the point of synchronisation to update both the computer and IPod making sure both devices contain the same up-to date media irrespective to the contents of either.
Am I missing something really simple here or are these things made deliberately difficult?
    Any advice would be appreciated
    Thanks –tred3

  • I have a new laptop and have transfered 'all purchases' yet the only things i have is whatever is on my ipod at the time, nothing from the other iTunes accounts. What do i do to get everything back?

so my old laptop was a HP pavilion Vista. And my new laptop is a samsung windows 7. I pluged my ipod in as usual, transfered all purchases, yet all that got moved into my library was just what was stored on my ipod at the time, I had authorised my new laptop yet i still dont know how to get everything grouped into my new laptops library... Anyone know how i can do this?

    How do you do what?
Copy everything that you included in your regular backup to your computer.
Copy contact back to the computer, copy calendars, copy documents, etc.
You can type "move itunes library" into the Google search bar for itunes instructions.

  • IP issue on wireless with WRT54G and new laptop

    Hello,
I just got a new laptop after having gone over a year without one on my home network and I have an issue...
The laptop sees the WRT54G wireless router, says it connects to said router, and then tells me it can't obtain an IP from the router. I vaguely remember when my desktop PC used windows XP and I had this little tool that worked with the WRT54G when I last had a laptop on my home network, and I had the same issue until I 'authorized' it. That tool doesn't seem to exist anymore online and my desktop has had a fresh install of Windows 7 for what seems like ages... Nothing I change in settings seems to get the laptop an IP wirelessly, anyone have any suggestions...?

Oddly, I found a strange, but far easier solution... plugging it in through a wired connection then removing said wire after using the network gave the laptop an IP address and let it work perfectly wirelessly... Though I'm not sure why that should be... It only makes sense if the router doesn't give out IP's to wireless connections for some odd reason...
Oh and I created and manually recreated the connection at least 3 times... With no effect... I even switched from WPA to WEP to wide open while trying to get it to work (it's back on WPA again now) when trying to find a solution... None got me more than limited connectivity as it wasn't getting an IP address from the router, even though it was connecting...

  • I have an iPod Touch on IOS 5.1.1 - I uploaded its music library to my new laptop, using Tunejack. However, I now cannot download music from my laptop to the iPod (but can download to my iPad2 and iPhone 4S). I have gone under 'music' tab. Any ideas?

I have got an iPod Touch on IOS 5.1.1, which contained my music library, including uploaded CDs and purchases. I have a new laptop (using Windows 7) and upIoaded my music library from the iPod, using Tunejack, onto the laptop. I then made a few purchases but these weren't showing up on my iPod, so in frustration, thinking this would rectify the problem, I then re-booted the iPod, with the result that my entire music library disappeared from it.  I then went to sync with my lap top and went in under the 'Music' tab and clicked on download 'entire music library' but nothing happens. I have also tried 'selected playlists, artists, albums and genres' but this has not worked as well. The same issue dows not apply with eitehr my iPad 2 or my iPhone 4S.  As mentioned, this music library did come from my iPod so there is no space issue. If anyone has any suggestions i would be grateful.

    Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • My itunes library has gone following a laptop rebuild.  I do have my iPod which is up to date - can I transfer from the iPod to the library or will the iPod lose all its data if I snyc?

My itunes library has gone and is empty following a laptop rebuild.  I do have my iPod which is up to date with music, photos, apps etc - can I transfer from the iPod Touch to the library or will the iPod lose all its data if I sync to the laptop?  PLEASE HELP!

I'm guessing you've got iPod touch 2nd generation
iPod touch 2nd generation only goes up to 4.2.1, so you'll need a newer generation...
iPod touch 3rd generation only goes up to 5.1.1
4th and 5th generation both go up to iOS 6.1.3, wich is the current latest version.
    Hope this helps

  • Unable to xfer library from external hd to itunes 9 on new laptop

I am unable to access my externally stored library through iTunes 9. I was able to access the library on my previous computer with an older version of iTunes.
But on my new laptop with a new installation of iTunes 9 when I go to File->Library->Organize Library->Consolidate Files nothing happens. When I return to that dialogue box, the check mark is gone although the "Upgrade to iTunes media organization" has since been grayed out.
I've tried holding the shift key while opening iTunes but when I am directed to select my library, iTunes insists on opening up a .itl file, rather than simply letting me point to my folder which is full of media.
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks.

I wonder if it has anything to do with itunes 9 onwards storing the files in a differently-called folder than older versions.
The same thing happened to me while I was changing computers. However I managed to avoid your problem. I didn't follow your steps.
What is it that you want to do actually? Transfer the library to the computer? Or just use it externally like you've done until now?

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • 2-3 old ipod touch is no longer syncing to itunes library, which was recently moved to new laptop.

Recently moved my library of music, audiobooks, and podcasts to new laptop with Windows 8, at which time I upgraded my itunes software as well. My 2-3 year old ipod touch is no longer syncing properly. Audiobooks and podcasts are fine (after much effort), but all of two songs out of an extensive music library are the only ones syncing. I see them in my library on the new computer and have managed to sync them to my iphone 5 as well. Ipod touch appears to have ample file storage space left. What gives? Is the i-pod touch already useless with the latest Itunes software? Operator error? Hardware problem? I don't know what to think. Have been using ipods for years without this issue.

I just installed iTunes on my new laptop.  When I click on the desktop icon I receive a pop up that says "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  I have no idea what this means or what to do about it.  I can't even find a file on my computer like the one referred to in the pop up.  I am currently considering keeping my old laptop if it is the only way for me to continue to access iTunes.  What should I do to fix this?

What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future.

  • ITunes musical library located on a WD 2TB, ext. drv. Computer destroyed by virus; ED survived. Bought new laptop, connected ED. Not able to see library. ED shows as 'G:' 95% full. How can I reconnect my old library to new laptop?

I had my iTunes musical library on an ext. drv. WD 2TB, ‘MY BOOK ESSENTIAL'. Three weeks ago, my computer was infected by a virus that fried it. It did not affect the external drive. I bought a new computer: a laptop, Dell XPS, Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU, Windows 7 Home Premium. I have been able to connect the WD external drive; however, I am not able to see the musical library in my iTunes or Explorer. ‘My Computer’ shows the external drive as ‘G:’ 95% full. It reads, 32.1 GB free of 1.36 TB. When I click on the drive to see its contents, it shows nothing. The library in iTunes also shows nothing. Can anyone help, please? How can I reconnect my old musical library to my new laptop and iTunes? Many thanks.

Hmm, viruses don't generally "fry" drives. They can make bootable operating systems not bootable, hide data, and corrupt executable files. Software can potentially wipe all the data from the drive but it shouldn't be able to physically damage the drive. Bah! What's done is done.
As to unhiding your files assuming they are just hidden....
Hit Start > Run, type in CMD and press enter. Type the following at the prompt and then press enter:
    attrib -h -s -r g:\*.* /d /s
This tells windows to clear the hidden, read-only, and system flags from all files on the drive, assuming of course your profile has the power to "see" the files and change them.
If that doesn't work then you may need to take ownership of the drive first. The drive may have security settings that make it "belong" to an account on your old system. Right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer and click Properties. Click the Security tab, the Advanced button, the Owner tab, then the Edit tab. Make yourself the owner, then you can make any other changes to the security settings you want to back on the Permissions tab. (If you can't change the owner log out and log back in as Administrator). For iTunes your account (or everyone) and SYSTEM need full access to all files. Any changes you make should be applied to "This folder, subfolders and files", should be inheritable and you should also replace the permissions on all child objects.

This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year. Then see if you can connect to the store.

Hi!  I just bought a new laptop and have downloaded itunes and signed in.  When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs.  How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  Also, will itunes still recognize my ipod on my new computer when I plug it in?  I have a Dell with Windows 7 and an ipod nano, I think.  Why can't I just plug my ipod in and "sync" it?  Will that move my CD music into my library on itunes?  Thanks for any help!  Soooo confusing!!!

" When I did this, my library showed all the music I have "purchased" from itunes but did not have the music that I downloaded a long time ago through itunes from my old CDs."
    Correct.
" How can I get that music to show up in my library now on my new computer?  "
Copy it from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod.
