New Laptop, Old Hard Drive

I recently purchased a new laptop because the motherboard on my old laptop died. My old hard drive was fine however, and I have transferred all of my old files onto my new laptop. However, when I attempt to listen to one of the songs I purchased from iTunes, I get a message that says, "The song 'X' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I am then required to go through the process of locating the file in my iTunes folder and double-cliking on it. This is time-consuming and every single song is marked with a "!" thus indicating that the file cannot be located. Please help me!

What that means about "song cannot be found" is the folder where u had that song has been moved. You have to find it & it should be in "My documents" if u already have successfully transferred it from your old computer. If not, then its lost. Thats the one thing I really hate about it.

  • New Computer, Old Hard Drive?

Hello. I just upgraded my desktop and in doing so installed my old hard drive as well. My old drive is where my i tunes resided.
Well, I installed i tunes onto my new computer, essentially creating a new account (I did not copy the old file over) now when I try to synch my i pod I get the following message:
"The i pod is synched with another i tunes library. An Ipod can be synched with only one library at a time." Then I am given the choice to "erase and synch" or to "transfer purchases"
What I want to accomplish is to have all of my old music (from previous library) to move to my newly created account along with some new purchases I just made.
    How can I accomplish this?
    Thanks,

There are a couple of different ways this transfer could be handled.
    1. Backup all your data and files to a different hard drive. When your new MacBook arrives, copy your data from that drive manually. (This may not be an option since you don't have a working computer to backup from.)
    2. Put your current hard drive in an external case and use the Migration Assistant to copy the bits and pieces you choose to the new computer. Or manually drag and drop your files over. The Migration Assistant is normally used if you have an older Mac and you're upgrading and you want to copy all your files over to the new Mac (this can be done from an external hard drive and not just a working Mac). The assistant will ask you what you want to transfer over, users and their files, network settings and/or applications. You can pick and choose between those options and even pick and choose in between different users on the same hard drive (if you have more than one).
    3. Put your current hard drive into the new MacBook. It won't startup correctly, but you could then boot from your Mac OS X install disk that comes with the new MacBook, install Mac OS X as a simple "update" or an "archive and install". Obviously, you don't want to chosoe an "erase and install". And then continue to use your original drive in the new MacBook. This option is probably the most risky. While I've done something similar in the past, I haven't always had the best luck with an "update" over the top of a different build of Mac OS X. An "archive and install" will move your current System folder to a "previous" System folder and install a new System folder. You have the option to keep your user files and network settings if you choose to. Bear in mind, this path does not leave you with a backup of all your files in case something does go wrong and you must erase & install.

  • New MBP, old hard drive

I recently replaced my two-year-old MacBook Pro with a new one. I took the old hard drive (which was not stock -- 320 GB, 7200 rpm) out of the old machine and into the new. Ever since then, random operations result in the spinning beach ball. It can take 15-25 seconds to do simple things like scroll up a page in Safari, open an email preview in Mail, or switch applications.
I'm wondering if I've created a Frankenstein's monster, where the old hard drive doesn't know how to communicate with the new hardware? Disk Utility reports the drive is fine, so I'm thinking it might be an OS issue. I ran the 10.5.8 combo updater again, and my build went from 9L30 to 9L31a, but the slowness persists.
I'm figuring I have three options:
    - Reinstall Leopard from the original disc;
    - Put the new MBP's original hard drive in an external case, boot from that, and use File Migration to copy the files from my old internal drive; or
    - Upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Do any of these sound like they'll be effective and practical? What other solutions can you recommend?

As you stated, your problem is likely due to hardware drivers internal to the OS - your old HD and OS is using drivers not designed for the new machine.
I don't know of a miniprep type utility for OS X (in case you are not familiar with, miniprep is a Windows utility that strips machine specific drivers and other configuration info from the OS, and forces discovery and installation)
I would perform a backup, clean install the OS, then use migration assistant to move data, accounts, and programs. I would be careful with "machines settings" as that may or may not move an old driver.

  • New MacBook, old hard drive and unsynced iPhone.

Here's the situation. Old MacBook pro died (logic board gave up). I've removed the hard drive and bought an enclosure so that I can plug it in via USB to my new MacBook pro. I am NOT a fan of Migration Assistant. I'm discouraged by the thought of copying unnecessary files. I'd rather drag and drop what I need, and then install applications from scratch. There are so many things I no longer need, anyway. It's spring clean time, after six years. What confuses me is that my iPhone hasn't been synced since my old mac died a month ago. There are new photos and apps on there that I want. I also missed out on updating to iOS 5. I don't want to plug my phone in and get a warning about syncing to a new computer and erasing everything on my phone.
So what's the tidiest way to go about this? Do I first copy my iTunes library over before syncing my phone? What files do I need exactly? Do I copy my old iphoto library over too? Where are my old apps kept? I would love to plug in my phone and it assumes it's just updating as normal. But the most important thing is that I don't lose my new photos. That trip to Iceland is very important to me!
    Please talk me through this!

  • Moving iTunes Library from iPod mini to new computer (old hard drive dead)

Hi all, I own a 2nd gen (I believe) iPod mini with all of my music from my iTunes library on it. Last weekend, my computer began freezing/crashing while loading my desktop, and a diagnostic confirmed that the read/write head on my hard drive was bad. I don't currently have the spare cash to send it away to a recovery lab, so I am starting from scratch with a new computer I will be ordering today.
My question is this--is it going to be possible to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer? Many of the songs on my iPod are from other sources, during the years that I was not using iTunes, and from what I have read I will only be able to transfer my purchased music. I know there is a way to make my iPod into a hard drive in order to transfer the music to my new computer, but as I said, I cannot even boot up my old machine, and thus cannot access my iTunes library on my HD.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and advice you may have.

I've had to do this in the past (4 years ago). Try this page for a list of programs that can help you:

Copy the entire iTunes folder from \Users\<User>\Music on the old drive into your music folder on the new computer.
Or see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Moving my iTunes library from old hard drive to new laptop

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but, just today I punched my laptop screen and shattered it (the laptop has been asking for it lately, it's been acting up and I was planning on buying a new one anyhow). I removed the hard drive and it's perfectly fine, no damage. I bought a new laptop a few hours after breaking the old one and I was wondering how, if possible, I can move my iTunes library from my old hard drive to my new laptop. I read about a hard drive case that comes with a USB cable and one of those things that plugs into my hard drive that I can then plug into my new laptop and my old hard drive will show up.
Sorry, it was a bit of a mouthful. Anything anyone can suggest is greatly appreciated.

If you simply copy the iTUnes folder to /Music/ and launch iTUnes, everythign will be there. No need to import anything.
This will work the same with iPhoto.
Simply copy the Photo library to /Pictures/ folder and launch iPhoto.

My old PC crashed and I ended up buying a new one.  I was able to recover all my music from the old hard drive and restore it in itunes.  I purchased a new album online thru itunes and added it to my library.  When I tried to add the album to my 6th nano it wouldn't download.  All the tracks are check marked and I can listen to the album on my pc but it won't sync onto the ipod.  The new pc is authorized, any ideas?

You can only sysc with one iTunes library. The new computer is a new library. You have to restore your iPod on the new conputer and then sync.
