New laptop purchase assurance

Question

I usually purchase all my electronics at the best buy on 86th street in Manhattan.  Over the past few years I spent close to 6K on laptops, desktops, ipads and TV's.....And up to this point (July 2015) I was always satisfied with the pricing and advice I would receive from the best buy staff. My last purchase was a Lenovo laptop I needed for on the go web browsing with a minimum of the bells and whistles.  When I arrived home I opened the "new" box with all security stickers in place  I noticed  a small scratch on the back of the machine.  This was a new laptop mind you...not refurbished, not "used" and not a demo model.  I paid full price for the machine. I really din't pay much attention to it thinking that perhaps it was a factory thing.  It worked, it was fine and all until I tried to fully charge the battery.  It never fully charges...only 99%.  It was then I thought the machine might have been returned by someone unsatisfied with the battery issue. What bothers me is if that is the case, best buy took the laptop in the back room after someone else returned it, cleaned it up as best as they could, placed a new security sticker on the box and resold it to me as new.  This makes no sense to me.  Why would best buy even contemplate this kind of behavior?  I never returned the machine.  It works fine for what I need it to do. The reason for my inquiry is I intend to purchase an expensive gaming laptop in the next few weeks from the Manhattan 86th Street store again.  The Asus ROG G751JYDB72.  Selling price of $2499.99 as of this writing.  What assurances would I have that I'm getting a new machine?  I was told by some that the best thing to do is buy it directly from Asus, this way I'm guarantied a new laptop.  I'd rather just go into the store, pay cash and take it home the same day without having to wait for it to be shipped.  I may not be home when it might be shipped anyway. What really happens to all the items that are returned for one reason or another?  Supposedly best buy returns them to the manufacturer. In my case they did not...they resold it.  Will best buy allow me to open up the new boxed machine in the store (after I purchased it of course)?
