New layers from line sections?

If I have an outline on a transparent background, perhaps like a bunny, with the outer line and internal lines defining sections. I want to make new layers out of those sections filled in, different layers for each section. The way I've been doing it so far is to create a new layer, then either fill over the area and erase what isn't in the section I want, or else draw over the outline of the section and flood fill it in. Either way this takes a long time. I tried filling in the section with flood fill, using magic selection, and make new layer from copy, but the problem becomes that the edges of the inner section aren't right to the edge of the line and this is visible with what I'm filling with (often solid colors), which is why I drew over the edges on another layer because I can place the outline on top and the underside isn't seen.
Is there a faster way to do this?

Outline starts like this:
Goes to this, with each color on a separate layer:
The yellow layer looks like this:
The whole thing looks like this when finished, colors still on separate layers:

  • How do I create a new event from a section of a long video clip

When I try to select a section of a long clip and drag it to a new event in the iMovie event library, the whole clip moves into the new event.  Isn't there a way to just select and move a section to the new event?

This does work, but the process is crushingly difficult for my mother. (Try to explain to a 60 year old that you need to reveal the clip in finder. Trim it, save it, trim it, save it, etc for each part of the video. Then re-import those clips into iMovie and delete the original large file from your events). This could have been accomplished with one keyboard shortcut or menu command.
I'm opposed to creating projects to organize events because it doesn't make sense when creating a Christmas montage to open a project and look for a clip then find it in the events when you could otherwise just look through Christmas 1984 and pull the clip you want. It creates a dual paradigm.
More than anything I want to attract Apple to this glaring flaw in their product. I can't see the downside of in-app splitting of events which was a feature of iMovie v9. Why remove it entirely? I know it's a rarely used feature, it could have been suitably hidden to avoid accidents. It wouldn't frustrate the average user, but it has confused the ever-living **** out of my mother.

  • How do I copy parts of layers from one AI doc into a new AI doc and keep/create same layer names?

How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers,  with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains  400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then  paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to  create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need, so please don't suggest that as the solution.

No Monica, nothing in Plug-ins other than the standard installed items (extensions, filters, formats, etc.). No 3rd-part clipboard extension on my computer that I'm aware of, either. All frustratingly basic. And my other CS5 Adobe programs appear to work well, at least to the extent that I am familiar with them.
So, from what I can tell of the various comments (thanks to all of you), am I correct in thinking that it seems I can't, in fact, do what all of you can do (that is, copy some objects from some layers in one doc and paste into another doc preserving those same layers by name and organization, and each containing the correct objects from each original layer)?
If so, that solves half my issue - "is it supposed to be possible to do it"; leaving just the other half - "why can't I do it too".
I'll get those screenshots made and posted later just in case I haven't adequately described the issue, or y'all haven't understood it.

  • Does duplicating layers from an 8-bit PSD reduce the color depth of a new 16-bit edit?

I have been using several versions of Photoshop over the years starting with CS3, then CS6, and finally CC. Through 2012, all my RAW files were converted using 16-bit color depth in ACR. However, in examining my files recently, I noticed all were in 8-bit color-depth, which likely happened once I upgraded to CS6 and ACR left 8-bit as the default. As such, I now have hundreds of images that I wanted to edit in 16-bits that have been converted to 8-bit starting with my ACR export. The files are all RAWs from cameras like the Canon 5D, 5D Mark III, Olympus OMD EM5, and Sony RX100.
I have 8-bit PSDs of my edits of these files which contains multiple layers. I use features from the Nik and Topaz collections for noise reduction, contrast enhancement, black and white conversion, and sharpening. I also use layered Photoshop features like Selective Color. I want to know if I can simply duplicate the layers from the 8-bit PSD files onto a new 16-bit RAW converted background layer rather than re-edit each and every file. There would be no change in the crop of other reasons why the layers would not match up, but I am concerned that duplicating those layers might throw away the benefit of moving to 16-bit since they were created in an 8-bit color-depth.
As a test, I looked at a few files where I had pushed the shadows and colors to an extent and duplicated the layers from an 8-bit conversion to a 16-bit conversion and could see no difference. I am not sure if this is because Photoshop has become very good at reducing color-depth without a perceptible difference or if I am throwing away information in moving the layers.
I work off of a fairly modern computer and a top-end Eizo CG276 self-calibrating monitor and good video card. I am extremely sensitive to color and shade changes as well.
Thanks for any help, I am a bit stressed at the thought of re-editing hundreds of files from step 1, but it is important to me that I not throw away color information and it is better I start re-editing now rather than years from now.

While raw file contain a 8Bit jpeg previews image in some color space. The RAW sensor data is not a color image and has no color space and the bit dept of pixels depend on the manufacturing.  Most sensor produce one value for each pixel  10 to 14 bit seems to be common.   Sensors only measure the light intensity not color.  If front of each pixel sensor is a color filter which lets Red or Green or Blue light be measured for intensity.
A RAW converter can convert your sensors RAW data into a color RGB image in any color work-space in 8 or 16 bit color depth.    No Adobe update went around and scanning your computer looking for 16bit color depth images and convert all of them to 8bit color.  Your ACR workflow settings may have been change from 16 bit color to 8 bit color by you or set to 8bit by some update or script used.  So you current ACR work-flow setting may be converint tou raw datya into 8bit RGB images. As long as you have you raw files you can reprocess these  to produce 16Bit color RGB Image by makinf the proper ACR work-flow settings.   You can also change your 8bit image to 16 bit image mode.  However this will not recover any color quality lost or posterization that has set in..  It will give you a bit more latitude using Photoshop filters which may help you not get banding posterization.

  • Why is "New Volume From Layers" Greyed Out? (PS CS5 Extended)

OK here's what I've tried, based on forum research:
    1. Make sure two layers are selected.
    2. Deleted PS CS5 preferences (using Shift+Ctrl+Alt method) - tried twice.
    3. Checked that my video card is supported (it is).
Yet this menu item continues to be greyed out - I'd appreciate any suggestions to get it working!
I cannot find out how this menu item is meant to be used as there seems to be no article in Adobe Help.
    Thanks in advance!

Is there an "unhelpful answer" button?
In that case how does this guy get it to work with TWO layers http://www.planetphotoshop.com/3d-light-beams.html and also the demo from MAX2010 - maybe he was bluffing?
And two vector paths is normally enough to interpolate a 3D volume in any 3D modeller I've ever used. So the "minimum of 3 paths" is simply not true.
So, I'm left with the question why is "New Volume" from layers greyed out?
    Thanks

P.S. It works with two layers on my OSX 10.6.7 machine.

  • Load a new URL from command line under Mac OS X 10.5

Under Mac OS X 1.05: if Firefox is already running and I type (in a Terminal):
    /Applications/Firefox.App/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin http://google.com
a pop-up comes out and complains that "Firefox is already running". The behavior under Linux is load the requested URL in a new tab|window.
I have also tried *documented* options such as "-new-tab" and "-remote", but I get the same error.
This only happens when Firefox is already running.
Is there a way to load a new URL from the command line if Firefox is already running, under Mac OS X? I have tried Mac's open(1), but it does not get along well with Tab Mix Plus, so it is useless for me.
I think that this difference in the behavior between Linux and Mac's version is very very very annoying for developers and users!

Over time, and with some different "incidents," the Preferences file can become corrupt. In PS, I have only had that happen once over decades, and it was when a program decided to update, while I was doing a Save of a very large PS image. In that case, the Ctrl+Alt+Del, while launching PS brought up the "Do you want to reset your Preferences to the default?" message, at which time I chose yes, and all was good, except for the work that I was doing the Save for, but I had a Save_As_a_Copy, so only lost about an hour's work. I figure that one "trashed Prefs" file since version 2.5, with almost daily use is not bad.
PrPro has the same "three-finger-salute," or you can go to your Preferences file and either Rename, or Delete that - just like PS. Just remember to hold down those keys during the entire launch cycle. I do not believe that PrPro has that dialog screen, asking if that is what you wish to do, but I believe that it just clears the Prefs, and resets to the default. Never had to trash my Prefs in PrPro, but several users have, and it has fixed some odd issues.
    Good luck,

  • 3D: Deleting a mesh, applying multiple materials, "New volume from Layers"

I am learning the 3D capabilities of Photoshop CS5 Extended and have some questions that do not appear to be covered in the help reference material:
    Can I remove a mesh from a 3D Layer / scene?
For instance, after having merged two 3D layers together.
Can I apply multiple materials to a single mesh?
I can see that more complex meshes have multiple materials applied to them. Does Photoshop have the capability to add/remove more than one materials to meshes?
What is "New volume from Layer" intended to do?
I couldn't find this specific menu item in the help reference material anywhere.
    Thanks,
    B.
PS: I sat waiting on hold for Adobe tech support for 2 hours and 17 minutes with no signs of life before giving up. When I explored callback options online, the website said that no options are available for Photoshop. This level/absence of support is mind-bogglingly awful for an enterprise like Adobe. I know me grousing about it here won't change anything, but I need to get my frustration out of my system and writing it down helps.

    Hi B.,
    Can I remove a mesh from a 3D Layer / scene?
For instance, after having merged two 3D layers together.
You can only hide meshes in the scene, not remove or delete them. You have to delete the whole 3D layer to remove meshes from a document.
Can I apply multiple materials to a single mesh?
I can see that more complex meshes have multiple materials applied to them. Does Photoshop have the capability to add/remove more than one materials to meshes.
With Photoshop you can't replace an existing single material with multiple materials. There's very limited ability to edit UV mapping and you'll want to do that in a full 3D modeling application. Repoussé meshes are created with 5 materials to a single mesh object so technically, yes to your question; But that's not really what I think you're asking.
What is "New volume from Layer" intended to do?
I couldn't find this specific menu item in the help reference material anywhere.
This has applications in scientific and medical imaging, but doesn't need to only be used there. An example would be to use a DICOM format, multi-sliced imaging scan and have the layers of the scan modeled into a volume. It is really just taking successive layers and placing them at equal distance in space. The Render Settings dialog offers a few options to vary the displayed volume after it's generated.
I'll see if I can get that model tomorrow and try to find out why the menu items are not working. You're talking about the group of 4 that includes 'Hide Nearest Surface', right?

    steve

  • 3D - New volume from layers

    Hi everybody,
For my current project I need to use the "New volume from layers" function in the 3D menu.
However, this functions seems to be disabled. I've searched for a solution, and found that the hardware could be the cause...
    My specs:
    RAM: 1GB
GPU: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD3850 - 512 MB GDDR3 (AGP)
Do I have insufficient hardware resources for this function?
If so, is there by any change another way to enable it? I really need this function.
Unfortunately there's no better computer around that I can use...
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards,
    Thomas.

If you need drivers there are no ATI certified drivers made for that card anymore and the card is no longer supported.
I do not know what your OS is as you didn't post it. However, there is a hotfix for the 10.2 driver set. Not even sure if the 10.2 drivers will work on your card or system. It is up to you if you wish to download the 10.2 drivers and then the 10.2 hotfix. A soht in the dark if you ask me.
Best bet is to upgrade. But if you have AGP that is old hardware and motherboard. Some cards are still made for AGP so doing a search for one is a good bet too.
Anyways here is the link for ATI and the hotfix. Like I said you will have to download the 10.2 drivers first. But they may not work.

  • No From line in New message window

I've just given my old MacBook (Snow Leopard) to my ex-wife. She can receive incoming mail, but there's a problem with outgoing mail. When she clicks the New Message button, there's no From line in the new message header. Consequently, she can't be sure that Mail is using the correct SMTP server. In any case, she can't send out any mail at all.

Thanks, Carolyn, for your suggestions. I'm communicating by phone with my ex-wife (who lives in a distant corner of France) in an attempt to solve her problem... which still exists. I'm sure we've indicated the correct output server name. Could it be the output port that's wrong? (I've suggested to my ex-wife that she should contact her ISP with this question.) The thing that surprises me most is that, in a new output mail window, no From line is displayed. I had imagined that every new output mail window contains systematically a From line. Or is there a choice somewhere about whether or not it should appear (like the Cc and Bcc lines, for example)?

I am getting this message when importing stills into photoshop CS6 Extended to make a time lapse video. I have watched many tutorials and follow them but always get stuck at this point. I have tried various formats and sizes TIFF JPEG etc. The files are numerical sequenced in one folder.

    Trevor,
Yes that is the one I watched and that's my workflow when I go to Layer, Video Layer, New Layer from file that,s when this message comes up. I had a thought but haven't tried it yet, my settings open images in 16 bit maybe I should change back to 8 bit, I'll let you know.
