New LCD monitor resolution

My new Viewsonic LCD wants a resolution of 1680x1050. How do I set this in xorg.config or is it not possible.

Normally, this should work like A.I. BOT said. However, I had to fight with exact the same problem yesterday for about 3 hours until I got an solution. If you connect your monitor via D-SUB (analog) then you might have to set a modeline for the monitor. A correct modeline you get from
gtf 1680 1050 60
and you should modify your xorg.conf like
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Monitor Model"
Modeline "1680x1050" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync +Vsync
EndSection
If you connect it through DVI you might get the problem, that all settings in xorg.conf seem to be ignored and the only resolution you get is 1280x1024. The you should do
grep -i pixel /var.log/Xorg.0.log
and perhaps get something about a maximum pixelclock of 135.0 MHz. The you need in xorg.conf
Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck"
ind the Device Section. The you should get native resolution on DVI without any modeline just the way A.I. BOT said.

LCD Monitor Resolutions

Having a slight problem with a Viewsonic VX2235wm LCD Monitor installed approx 3 weeks ago.
Installed on a Windows XP Home OEM computer with a MSI NVIDIA GEFORCE NX6600-TD 256MB PCIE TVO DVI card installed
I have been using same setup only as Digital with a Digital DVI-D cable connected to the graphics card [Please Note! = I had not connected the monitor with the “Analog” cable]
Now!
Came home tonight, started up the computer and I found the screen resolutions were all out of plumb.
Had lost the required 1680 x 1050 which was not listed [All I had showing were 3 only = 1680x 2100 , 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600 =]
I was advised to try to overcome this by updating the drivers for the card as I was only using NVIDIA v7.212(MSIVersion) so I updated same using NVIDIAv8419(MSIVersion) and then again used the “MSI Live Update“ to update same with NIVIDAv162-18 (MSIVersion)
The above drivers updating did not help?
I gave some thought and removed the digital cable and I connected the monitor only with the VGA Analog setup and found I had a functional monitor as Analog with all resolutions below! All looks OK and screen presentation crisp and excellent

1280 x 1024
1280 x 960
1152 x 864
1024 x 768
Now the question is do I have a faulty graphics card or a faulty monitor?

Try with the latest NVIDIA ForceWare drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Uninstall old drivers > Reboot to safe mode > Use Guru3D Driver Sweeper > reboot into normal mode install new drivers > reboot.

New LCD Monitor Blinks On and Off

I just purchased a new 22" Visionmaster LCD monitor, connected via digital cable to my ATI Radeon 128Mb video card.
However, it tends to switch OFF to a black screen, and after about 5 seconds it comes back on. The screen displays the word DIGITAL in the upper right hand corner.
Why is this happening, and what can I do to avoid it?
It doesn't seem to like using the digital cable. It works fine using the standard VGA cable, however.
Can anyone comment on this? Is this particular card not compatible?

Hello! Look in your system prefs under the screen saver and see if a "hot corner" is set. It sounds like the mouse is trying to trigger a screen saver or the "display slep" is set to only a few seconds. I've seen this type of behavior with my Dell screen and it's something I'm triggering with the mouse. Tom

Problems with two new LCD monitors and my G5 Power Mac

I bought two of these Westinghouse Digital LCD monitors:

When I plugged in the first one, my Mac's power-on light was on, but the Power Mac G5 (1.6 ghz, 1.25 gb RAM) wouldn't boot and the light wouldn't go off. No problems once I unplugged the first LCD monitor. I plugged it into the second one and the Mac turned on once it was plugged in, but at least I had an image. But the computer was frozen; I unplugged and re-plugged it into the first LCD and had an image, but again, it was frozen.
Any ideas why this is happening? I'm going VGA into the DVI via Apple's adaptor.

Okay, well this is interesting. If I take the brightness down too much, I see "ghosting" on EVERYTHING, including text. Also, when I shut down the Mac with monitor 2 plugged in, the one that when I plug in the LCD it turns the Mac on, it restarts the computer. I did this twice to insure I wasn't just hitting restart by accident. I'm calling tech support Monday (Westinghouse) and I think I'm taking these "good on paper" 16x9 LCDs back to Best Buy for a full refund. Then, I'll buy something different. I'm bummed out...

New LCD Monitor

Well, I finally got out of the stoneage, and replaced my broken crt with a samsung 22" widescreen, and so far I love it! Small problem though. I'm using DVI cables, and whenever my computer leaves my bios screen, it says something about "not perferred resolution" and i can't see the grub menu until I change it back to digital source. Also, I can't kill X, or start in init1, otherwise my screen turns black, and I have no output. Does anyone know what to do to let me view init1/grub?

My monitor seems to scale the default grub resolution up with no problems...
for cli you could try to add vga=795 on kernel boot options, that works for me atleast.
Got samsung 225bw and using fglrx drivers... although the drivers prolly dont kick in that early in the boot process

Dvi is always digital aint it? should be 60 Hz also, you've prolly noobed sumthin up

Dual Monitor Resolution Problems

I have the ATI 2400HD card in my iMac and I checked here on the Apple site and it says it supports resolution upto 1920x1200. Now when I connected a new LCD monitor with that resolution the max available is 1680x1050. Do I have to update the driver for the video card and add that resolution?

Are you using the DVI mini to DVI or VGA adaptor? What kind of LCD is it? brand/model/size=?
You are correct it should be able to go up to 1920x1200 according to the tech specs:

Flat screen LCD monitor

Has anybody got a flat screen running with a G3 desktop? I would like to run get an inexpensive one without replacing the video card. If you have a brand and model that worked with a VGA adaptor, please let me know, thanks.

Is the G3 running OSX? If so, drivers for non-ATI video cards are hard to find or nonexistent so you may not get any 3D acceleration. Still it might give you the connectivity you need. If the G3 is running OS9, I believe suitable ixMicro drivers are installed as part of the OS if you haven't removed them.
Bill W mentioned the "auto-sense" adaptor. If you don't want to invest in a video card, this is pretty important as the "set the switches yourself" adaptors tend to be old and may not support the resolutions a new LCD monitor offers.
You don't need a powerful video card for OSX support. If you could find an ATI Rage 128 Orion (retail) it would have a VGA connector and offer 16MB VRAM. I've used one on my Beige G3 with OSX and it does quite well with OSX's built-in video drivers. This page:

Most of those toward the bottom of the list should still work and it gives you an idea of what to look for on the used/pulled market.

LCD monitor recognized by X as CRT

I'm buy new LCD monitor and connect it to D-SUB on my GeForce4 MX 440.
But X and Nvidia drivers recognize the monitor as CRT.
I don't have DVI input on my video card. And only one monitor connected to computer.

LCD monitor and AirPort

my new LCD monitor seems to interfere wit airport. How can avoid such interferation in order to employ the monitor with mac mini?

Is the LCD (I would say LED if new as the backlight has changed to almost universally use LED).
located between the mini and the airport? I mean really close and able to stop the signals.. the LCD monitor.. is full of metal shielding.. and wifi will not get through. Move the mini or move the monitor or move the airport to a position where they are not blocked.. the wireless of the mini is on the plastic end with the ports as well as the underside plastic cover. (wireless doesn't get out of the metal). Ensure there is line of sight between the plastic area of the mini rear to the airport with nothing in the way.
Or does the monitor cause issues only when turned on.. ie if you turn off the monitor then the mini works ok.. hard to test that unless you have an old CRT monitor or something to test with.
Are you using USB3?
I doubt the monitor electronics is the problem.. (as opposed to its metallic nature) .. unless it has a USB3 hub in it. which is unlikely.
But USB3 happens to use a bus speed that is too close to the 2.4ghz band.
So one solution is to use 5ghz.
Another is to buy more heavily shielded cables for usb3 connections.

Could you be confusing USB3 problem for the Monitor causing wifi issues?
There is another more obscure problem that can happen though.. are you using DSL of any sort, adsl or vdsl or sdsl.. anything to do with phone lines??
Have you actually checked the link speed between the Mini and the airport when the LCD monitor is on or off? Does it change.. what if you move the monitor out of the way does the signal level change at all??

If your laptop LCD do not display a yellow tinge, then the most likely the vga adapter on your laptop probably have a bad connection or have dirt in it. There is the option of getting a port replicator, which i believe have a vga out port, or a cheap
usb2vga converter box, which can be bought for a cheap price over the net.

Tecra A2: Cannot use the 1680x1050 resolution on external LCD monitor

Hi All,
I need to make my Tecra A2 run at 1680x1050 at 60Hz for my new external VW222U LCD monitor which is connected to my port replicator.
I know the card (which is 82852/82855) can run at this resolution as when using the Intel Embedded drivers it works, just one has to give up all the little nice things when using the standard drivers, like monitor switching etc....
I have been discussing on many forums over at Intel's site why this resolution is not available by default, it appears that it is not a resolution enabled in the video BIOS which the display drivers read by default, so the vendor need to add it, the reason that the embedded drivers work, is that they don't read this directly from the video BIOS....

I know that issue, but we have to live with it because it seems that the graphics card vendors are giving some really "default" drivers to the notebook manufacturers.
I have an Satellite Pro S200 and I also use the Intel drivers from the Intel homepage. But my monitorswitching, etc.. works like a charm so maybe if you install the tools like the "FN-F5" etc.. it would probably work.
I would give it a try, otherwise: it is like it is.. :/

For unsupported resolutions, one may need to see if there are any software
solutions; maybe the minimum specs of the display are not met by an 8-bit
color specification of the video card in the computer.
Does the display support two kinds of connections, another one, plus VGA?
Could be the display needs some other support for it to work. Drivers?
VRAM? A different control panel and (third-party) software?
The limits may vary due to the VRAM on the card. With enough there, and
with a VGA connection (or supported converter to/from older Mac DB-15)
and the video graphics card with minimal supported specs will show that.
Been several years since I've run any PowerMac, & only used a variety of
Apple CRT color displays with them. Most times, they were very adequate.
A wider array of original choices appeared in the Displays control panel...
So I suspect the lack of video support in the graphics card or VRAM, to be
a player in this resolution limit you see in the control panel. A later CPU/GPU
and better hardware, later Mac OS, offered greater support for newer driver
along with better results.
There may not be a workable upgrade to a different graphic video card for
that old a vintage computer; or if there was one, to locate that now may be
a next-to-impossible mission. Was there any hints in the web site for older
Macs, the LowEndMac site, or others? Some are no longer current sites.

32" LCD Monitor - Best Resolution???

Hello all -
I just bought an Olevia LT32HVE LCD monitor to use with my G5. I'm wanting to find the best resolution setting so that it won't be horizontally whacky, yet still a good amount of real estate on the screen. At the recommendation of a friend who has a 42" monitor, I downloaded Display ConfigX so that I could change the default settings. After registering and installing, I changed the resolution from 1280x1024 to 1280x720 as my friend suggested. The resolution now LOOKs OK, but it's a bit large for my taste. I'd like to get a bit more real estate on the screen by making the overall image more condensed. The LCD manual says that it's highest resolution is 1366x768, but when I tried that, the monitor blanks out (to blue) and says the rate is not supported. Probably has something to do with the refresh rate as well? I then have to hook up a second monitor just to get the large one to come back (viewing-wise).
Any suggestions on some resolutions that this LCD monitor will be able to use? Or am I missing a key factor?

I was able to get the monitor to work at 1360x768 @ 60hz, but it looked a little rough around edges. Looks better at 1280x720 in terms of clarity and sharpness. But it's still the exact same size (at least, viewing-wise) as 1280x720.
Is there any way to get more real estate happening? Even though it's not horizontally crazy now, it's overall still very large.

LCD Monitor for Video Editing: Resolution Concern

I am trying to select an LCD monitor for my newly built computer. I have zeroed in on the DELL SP2309W, 23" Full HD Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor with Webcam. The optical resolution is Higher than Full HD at 2048 x 1152.
It is my understanding that Higher than HD Resolution is good for multi-tasking (but DVD movies get stretched and therefore the quality of your videos goes down.), but is it good for video editing with Premiere Elements 7 or 8? Should I be looking at monitors with 1920 x 1080 resolution?

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.
