New Leopard Disk Arrived, Failed Disk Integrity

I just wanted to post my recent experience with my Leopard install attempt. I bought my iMac back in about June, so it's relatively new.
Received Leopard today, 01/19/08 and put the DVD in. I removed all USB connections besides mouse and keyboard prior to install. During the install, I chose the optional Archive and Install, keep user preferences.
The next step was the disk integrity check. This checked failed about 70% of the way through, and prompted me to restart to try install again after verifying the disk was clean of debris/scratches. I did notice a scratch, but it didn't look that bad. I restarted the install, this time skipping the disk integrity check, and attempted to continue installation. With 23 minutes left of install, install failed on "EpsonPrinterDrivers" package, and asked me to restart install again. I cleaned the disk this time, though the scratch remained. I attempted the install again, and still got the same Epson error with 23 minutes remaining.
I contacted Apple Customer Care, and was on hold for about 10 minutes. I explained to support that I initially received the Disk Integrity failed message. He immediately said it is a bad disk. He said to please hold while he prepares to dispatch a new disk to me.
He returned from hold, and said the new disk is on the way and to allow 5 business days. I asked if I could just go to my local Apple Store Retail to exchange it, but he said that once I arrived at the store, they would just put me on the phone with Apple Customer Care, and have to wait for the arrival of the replacement like I am now.
I asked what I was to do with this non-working disk, and he said to just keep it, as they don't want them back.
Just thought I would share my experience for those who might encounter a similar issue.

  • Re Install Illustrator on a new Leopard Disk

    I have two hard drives one with Tiger which I use every day and one, which I have just installed Leopard on, and which I didn't transfer the apps to but just my personal settings. I use Photoshop Illustrator, Bridge and After Effects. The disks are both on the same computer Tiger in bay 1 and Leopard in Bay 4.
    I tried to re-install Illustrator but it comes up with an error. It advises calling Adobe customer support but I thought I'd ask here.
    Do I have to de activate it on the Tiger disk before I re install on the Leopard disc or have some install files come over when I migrated that are messing up a re install.
    I do like to have both disks on the go as I test out Leopard and find out whether it's ok to move to full time. It's not as if I am using them on other computers, it's the same machine.
    I do have a G5 with the apps installed on there. This is my second installation allowed in the license agreement
    Any help would be greatly appreciated

    I guess you could look at it that way. But it's on the same machine, I can't use the Tiger disc at the same time as I use the Leopard disc can I. All I am trying to do is upgrade my Tiger disc to Leopard and my way of doing it is to duplicate my system so if things go pear shaped I can always go back. Adobe doesn't allow me to do this and I am cross about it. With the money I pay and have paid over the years, I expect a little more respect, rather than the contempt Adobe dishes out to their customers.
    So I assume the only way to do this is to uninstall on the Tiger disc and then re install to the Leopard one.

    i just bought a used macbook pro. the man i bought it from didnt have his leopard disk. i installed vista 32 last night succesfuly but none of the features work because i dont have the leopard disk to download the oppropriate drivers. does anybody know where i can download the bootcamp drivers for vista 32 without having to buy the leopard disk?

    Hopefully, he gave you a $130 discount off the price, since you're going to have to buy a new Leopard disk. You should never have a machine without a system disk for it, since you'd be unable to recover without one if something went wrong. I don't know if you'll need it for those bootcamp drivers, but you will need it sooner or later.
    (Technically, what he did is illegal... if he didn't give you the disk, he should not have given you a machine with the system installed. You're also in a bad legal position, by using a system that you do not own a copy of.)

    It's a common problem.
    Press the eject key. It's a key on the top row of keys that has a solid triangle on it with a line below.
    Right click on the cd image then select eject.
    Drag the disk icon to the trash can which will change to the eject symbol.
    You can hold down the left mouse button when you boot up your machine.

  • Can we use new Leopard Install Disk on an old Macbook?

    I recently purchased a new Macbook which came with pre-installed Leopard. I also have an old Macbook which has Tiger running on it. I tried to upgrade my old machine to the new Leopard using the new disks that came with the new system. But it gives an error "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". Does apple prevent such installation or is there something I need to do to avoid this error?

    The Leopard which shipped with a MacBook Pro can only install on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
    The Tiger that shipped with a MacBook Pro can only be installed on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
    The retail Leopard which looks like * will only install on a MacBook Pro older than the release of Leopard labeled on the disk (i.e. if the MacBook Pro shipped before 10.5.1 was released and 10.5.1 is on the label of a disk of that label imaged above, then it will work).
    The retail release of Tiger which looks like will not install on ANY MacBook Pro.
    If you lost your original installation discs which came with a Tiger pre-installed MacBook Pro call Applecare for replacement discs as they are critical for repairing the MacBook Pro if it should need repair. AppleCare's number is here:

    If you are in that scenario having purchased from a non-authorized seller, ask the seller for the disc or to call AppleCare for the discs if they lost them as they must be always sold with the MacBook Pro they shipped with.

    Guys, I want to install SL in some hard disk. It's the native OS, the one came with the MBP. But after having installed Lion, my MBP doesn't allow me to install from the original dvd of Snow Leopard, telling me "impossible because you have Mac OS X” 23.1.1. istaller".

    hey thank you for your answers. I've written that I want to install snow leopard in a new hard disk, not over the lion. In other words, I want a hard disk with the faster snow leopard, that was the native OSX of my MBP mid 2010. But using the last procedure you suggested me, the dvd doesn't appear. I repeat, there's something changed in the firmware that blocks snow leopard.
    the comunication that appears when I insert the original dvd of SL is something like "impossible to install snow leopard because you have Mac OS X” 23.1.1. istaller".

    I am new to the forum and I have searched the topics for quite some time but have not quite found an answer so please forgive any redundancy.
    I have a 9 month old MacBook Pro which shipped with a Leopard upgrade disk. I have tried to do a clean install using the 10.4 disk and then the upgrade disk again but I keep getting an error on install saying the disk is corrupted. I think it may have been scratched.
    I am wondering if there is a way to get a Leopard restore disk without purchasing a retail Leopard? When I called Apple the lady said she did not know and they would call me back in 48 hrs. I have not heard yet and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Thank you very much!

    Sometimes a copy of a disk is "better" than a scratched or damaged original.
    You might copy the install disk. Copying reads and rereads marginal areas on disks and sometimes results in a disk that works when the original does not.
    It's worth a try.

  • Time Machine to new 4TB disk fails - disk scrubber?

    Is there a utility available so I can scrub this new 4TB disk drive?
    The RESTORE to this disk failed, as well all new attempts to create a Time Machine Backup to this disk.

    Thanks, that's a useful resource.
    I've been using Time Machine for years on several boxes.  Most recently the backup has been on a 3TB drive, but that's getting a bit tight.  Moving the image to the 4TB failed (using Disk Utility) and failing that, resorting to a brand new backup on the 4TB which has also failed during the copy on a few attempts.  Unfortunately each attempt takes about 24 hours (the Restore was 4 days before it failed).
    I'm not convinced the 4TB platters are clear.  Perhaps on next partition attempt I'll tell the server to erase the disk to see if there's a bad sector.

    I bought a new hard disk (500GB SATA, 2.5-inch, 5400RPM) and fitted it into my 2008 unibody MacBook. I have a retail copy of Leopard. After inserting the DVD, holding down C and powering up, I get a chime, a grey screen, and then a blank screen. Then I get another chime and a grey screen. This keeps repeating with no option to install leopard.
    I have tried resetting PRAM but this didn't help.
    Any ideas?

    There is additional Info HERE.
    If you call Apple Customer Supoort 0845 600 1683 and provide the serial number of the MacBook you may be able to purchase replacement original system discs.
    They will be for the version of OS that was pre-installed when manufactured and will contain the bundled software that is not included in a Full Retail Version of a newer OS X. The Apple Hardware Test specific to the Mac model will also be included.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

    My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
    I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
    What can i do?? where is the problem??

    Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

  • Leopard Disk Utility repair on disk with Tiger partition?

    I'm trying to repair a disk containing a bootable tiger partition using disk utility in Leopard and getting a "can't unmount disk error". Suggestions?

    After not being able to unmount the Tiger partition it went through and tried to fix my Time Machine partition and gave me this error:
    Invalid Index Key
    The volume Time Machine could not be repaired after 3 attempts
    Error filesystem verify or repair failed
    Should I restart and try repairing it again? Do you think I'm getting that error on the TM partition because it couldn't unmount the Tiger partition or is my brand new TM disk hosed?

  • Tiger and Leopard disk utilities/installer incompatible

    I have a MacBook2 that came with 10.4 Tiger pre-installed and a 10.5 Leopard upgrade disk that is labelled "CPU drop-in DVD".
    It also has a 10.4 Tiger "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" (and Disk 2) labelled "For Mac Computers" (not MacBook Specific?).
    The problem I am now faced with is that the Disk Utility (and disk mounting/recognition) systems are incompatible.
    I recently had my second 120 GB Fujitsu drive (first was an 80 GB) fail. The 80 GB was replaced by Apple warranty, and since there were no longer any drives that small then,  the 120 GB was substituted, by them, to repair it. They reinstalled Leopard 10.5 on the machine, off some disk of theirs.
    Since nobody makes drives this small anymore, the drive I bought to replace the failed 120 Gb is a 320 GB "WDC WD3200BPVT-00HXZT1".
    All went well usung the familiar 10.5 Leopard Disk Utility on the "CPU drop-in DVD" in formatting and partitioning the new 320Gb WD drive, but the "CPU drop-in DVD" requires that OS X 10.4 Tiger be pre-installed on the drive for it to then upgrade it. I have properly installed the drive, partitoned/erased and tested the 320 GB Western Digital drive. In Firewire target mode on the MacBook (from my IMac) the new drive and MacBook's Serial ATA I/O systems work perfectly.
    So I went to the originally supplied 10.4 Tiger "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" to re-install an old, basic Tiger system to it from, right?
    Wrong!
    The 10.4 Tiger "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" has a foreign and incompatible disk mounting system that totally fails to recognize the GUID partition, extended, journalled volume and correct drive hardware type. It fatally and mistakenly mis-identifies the new drive hardware as a "2.3 TB" media with the same WD product model number and shows it's volume as a grayed-out BSD "disk0s1" identifier that cannot be re-partitioned, repaired nor mounted. It first claims that "Disk Utility has lost it's connection the Disk Management Tool" - "relaunch Disk Utility" and/or thereafter just reports "Disk I/O Error".
    The Tiger Os X Installer disk's primitive Disk Management Tool (Information) holds the grossly mistaken and erroneous opinion that the new 320 GB WD drive is a 2.3 TB-capacity media that uses an "FDisk_partition_scheme", and thus, needless to say and regardless of any length of patience this drive never appears in the "Select a Destination" dialog.
    Since it's old "Tiger" Disk Utility cannot properly identify the drive, and I onlly use the teenie MacBook occasionally as a portable, miniature web-browser/email reader, MagicJack host or to play DVDs or listen to internat radio and have no Time Maxchine backup of the nothing of value I ever keep stored on it,  it is now impossible for me to reinstall OS X  of any flavor on my MacBook.
    Anyone have any idea of how to re-educate it?

    G5s can run specific versions of 10.4 depending on age.
    Read the serial number (do not post it here) to determine the age by going to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More info -> Hardware. The serial number consists of these initial components:
    2 alphanumeric characters for factory code.
    1 number for the year.
    2 numbers for the week of the year.
    Thus W80410 is the 10th week of 2004.
    Running any spreadsheet with consecutive date cells adding 7 to consecutive cells will give you the week of the year for any year, if you start with 01/01/year and give out the actual date of that year.
    As long as your G5 was made:
    Before April 8 2005, it can run any version of Tiger retail which looks like * and does not say Update, Dropin, or OEM.
    April 8 to April 28, 2005 it can run the Update installer as well to install 10.4
    April 29, to October 30, 2005 it can only run the retail installer which looks like above and has 10.4.3 or 10.4.6 on it, or the PowerMac G5 installer disc which came with it to install 10.4
    October 31, 2005 to April 2, 2006, it can only run the retail installer which looks like above and has 10.4.6 on it, or the PowerMac G5 installer disc which came with it to install 10.4.
    April 3, 2006 and later PowerMac G5s can only use the PowerMac G5 installer disc which came with them to install 10.4
    Given those limitations, yes, you can install 10.4 on one hard drive, and 10.5 on another. 10.5 also requires a minimum of 512 MB of RAM, and at least 9 GB of hard disk in addition to approximately 15% of the hard disc empty (based on arbitrary estimates). 10.4 will install with 5GB + 15% (based on arbitrary estimates) free. These amounts are unique to each hard drive.
    Note 10.5 has no Classic support.
    G5s can't boot Mac OS 9, but can use Classic from the original installer discs that shipped wtih them, when booted into 10.4.

    If you have the two allotted activations already and one was lost on the hard drive that failed then you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.
