Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Whenever you install new software, you MUST backup your data. No ifs, ands or buts. Here's how to backup your data*:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
The iPod is not a backup. The way music is stored on the iPod does not allow for easy recovery from the iPod, as it is designed to prevent piracy of music. All the software which I've tried to use to recover from the iPod data has failed in one way or another. You'd have better luck trying to use one of the data recovery techniques listed in my backup FAQ from your existing computer.

  • Itunes and new Leopard install

Ok, I really wish I could go back a few days and not spend the time or money on Leopard until the powers that be get it running LOL.
Anyway, I started my Leopard install 4 days ago and just got it going (every problem listed).
I just tried to open my Itunes and get the error-
"The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I'm getting beyond frustrated with this thing.
    Annette

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • HT204074 A new Windows install of iTunes 11.01.12 will not pick up the past purchases of Apps from my account

There's a number of free and a few purchased iPhone apps that were downloaded to an iPod Touch in the last couple of years, none of which will show up in a new Windows installation of iTunes. The goal of them showing up on a computer is the ability to delete many of them no longer used.
Here's a sequence of actions in an effort to get them to show up on a new Windows iTunes 11.01.12 installaton:
    1) Purchase of an iPad, where all the purchased past store apps display correctly under the "Purchased" tab
    2) Installed the latest iTunes on a Windows 8 computer in order to display, then delete all unwanted app store "purchases," whether free or paid.
    3) Had five defunct authorized past installs of iTunes which needed to be wiped out in order to authorize a new install. Did that.
    4) Successfully authorized the new Windows installation of iTunes 11.01.12 with one and only ID ever made, and it shows that, as well as the new iPad as both authorized with the same ID.
    5) Under the "Preferences" menu, then Store and Advanced, checked Apps under Automatic Downloads. Always check for available downloads and Download pre-orders when available are also checked.
    6) Went to Store menu item, then chose "Check for available downloads" from there. No legacy apps are available and it says: "All purchases have been downloaded for this Apple ID."
The result of all this is that there's still about 30 apps that had been downloaded for an iPod Touch device which don't display in the Windows iTunes installation and thus are still not available for removal.

It also says that "Over-the-air sync settings can be changed on your iPhone", but the only setting I can find is to disable the iCloud notes altogether.
You can change the Default Notes account with which your iPhone syncs by going to Settings > Notes and then tapping "Default Account" from there you can choose iCloud, On My iPhone, and possibly Outlook.
Also, a workaround for the issue is using third-party apps designed to backup your iPhone notes.
Thanks for the tip regarding the third party product (CopyTrans).  This does look like a good workaround
Unfortunately your suggestion re setting the "default account" is inaccurate.
This sets which account new notes will go into, not which account iTunes syncs to.
My default notes account is already set to "On My iPhone", but iTunes refuses to sync it if the iCloud notes account is also activated
My original problem remains.  I still cannot sync to PC while iCloud is one of the active accounts.
Given that notes and mail and calendar all allow for multiple accounts, it seems crazy to me that you can only sync the iColud account if it is activated as one of the multiple accounts.  Any other accounts are ignored by iTunes !!!!

  • I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. After a few weeks the HDD failed. New Leopard install reports: "insufficient memory". I need Tiger install disks so I can install

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • Can we use new Leopard Install Disk on an old Macbook?

I recently purchased a new Macbook which came with pre-installed Leopard. I also have an old Macbook which has Tiger running on it. I tried to upgrade my old machine to the new Leopard using the new disks that came with the new system. But it gives an error "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer". Does apple prevent such installation or is there something I need to do to avoid this error?

The Leopard which shipped with a MacBook Pro can only install on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The Tiger that shipped with a MacBook Pro can only be installed on a MacBook Pro of the same age.
The retail Leopard which looks like * will only install on a MacBook Pro older than the release of Leopard labeled on the disk (i.e. if the MacBook Pro shipped before 10.5.1 was released and 10.5.1 is on the label of a disk of that label imaged above, then it will work).
The retail release of Tiger which looks like will not install on ANY MacBook Pro.
If you lost your original installation discs which came with a Tiger pre-installed MacBook Pro call Applecare for replacement discs as they are critical for repairing the MacBook Pro if it should need repair. AppleCare's number is here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If you are in that scenario having purchased from a non-authorized seller, ask the seller for the disc or to call AppleCare for the discs if they lost them as they must be always sold with the MacBook Pro they shipped with.

  • Idvd with new Leopard install

    Hello,
I just upgraded & installed Leopard on my G5, but now when I try to use iDVD i can not get any of the themes to appear in the main screen, all I get is a black screen with the titles of the themes, but not the actual backgrounds.
Has anyone any idea how to correct this?
Any help would be greatly received.
    Thanks in advance
    Mark

I have the same problem as Mark Taylor3 in that Leopard has been installed on my G5 that was originally built for Tiger, and trying to use iDVD I am faced with a black screen as described above. I have downloaded two support updates for iDVD from the Support page of Apple, namely iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.2 which are aimed to make iDVD work with Leopard. When I try to install the updates (first I tried the 6.0.4 and then the 7.0.2) the installer loads up but then it tells me this: "An eligible iDVD application was not found in the location /Applications" and then I am forced to close the installer and go back to square 1. I am sure I do not have a bootleg version of iDVD (if that is what the error message implies) as it came with the Mac from the Apple Store.
What does the error message actually mean? iDVD is in the applications folder and I am sure I have not moved it from its location or renamed it at all.
Another reason to regret installing Leopard, but saying that the transition on my Macbook has been seamless and iDVD works fine on that - it's just the movie is on the G5 and I cannot transfer the file to the Macbook, I wish I could, but I've tried.

  • New leopard install

I installed leopard on a macbook that used to have Tiger on it. I erased the hard drive before the new install. I have a 80gb hard drive. After the new install it says I only have 41gb left. I should have quite a bit more left in my opinion what gives? I had to do the install twice the first didnt take. I am not sure what I did wrong. What is taking up so much space? I cant seem to find anything wrong on the HD. Any help would be appreciated .

having same issues with g4 867 one gig of upgraded ram...
no install have tried every other solution, nothing...
    must be the ram...
the ram checks out fine when i do a hardware test, quality vendor...
so in actuality why does it not work, if it works after install does not make sense, i have wondered about ram period, i saw no diffrance from 256 to over a gig?
any way trying now to find suitable ram which sure seems like apple should take back my copy of lepard with no hessitation and give me at least a copy of tiger...

  • 2 different mail programs on 2 macs? New Leopard  Install

I bought the family 5 pack of Leopard. i installed it on my MBP and on my iMac. The mail program is different.. On my MBP it has the "check Mail" icon to the right/Center with other icons and new stuff..
On my iMAc the check mail icon is alone, far to the left and there is a "Mail Activity" box in the bottom left??
Anyone know why? They both appear to be version 3.0 (912.1/912)
    Thanks

When upgrading to Leopard, did you do a clean install or the Archive and Save?
If you did the last one, then it kept the previous settings that you had on Tiger.
You can rearrange theses icons under View>Customize Toolbar.
I hope this will help you.

  • After Leopard install, all three Airport Expresses will not work...

I have three Airport Express' that worked completely fine before I installed Leopard. After the installation, the Airport Utility will not even detect them. No matter how many times I try to reset them, unplug them, or yell at them, they will not be recognized by the Airport Utility. Currently, all three units are completely useless and just flashing amber. I have tried to look through the topics to see if anyone else has the same issue but, I could not find one that seem to be a duplicate of this problem.
    Please help.
    -F.

My guess - are you trying to connect to them wirelessly?
If so, the only solution I found was to hook them up with an ethernet cable to the Mac.
Airport then finds them OK and you can upgrade the firmware / software to latest versions.
    Hope that helps

  • ISight microphone not working on Brand New Leopard Install Solved

    Hi everybody,
I had this problems during last days, and after solving it I want to share it with everybody thinking it may be helpful.
I got ten brand new never used iSights and I wanna to use them on a few MacPro Intel 2xCpu QuadCore 2,8 OS X 10.5.4 to 10.5.7 for videoconferencing using Skype and iChat.
With the video everything was fine but there was any solution to make the built-in iSight microphone works.
After a week googling and talking around I found by myself that the problems was the camera firmware.
Mac OS X 10.5.x doesn't update the iSight firmware so the audio mic doesn't work.
If you connect the camera to an old OS X (I used 10.4.11), open iChat and log in, it will ask you to update the iSight firmware to the latest version.
After that, if you unplug the camera and put it back to OS X 10.5.x the audio mic magically works.
Hoping to help somebody else I give my best regards,
    Michele Eustacchi
    Rome, Italy

If you running 10.5.X the updater is found here, go to your hard drive\System\Library\CoreServices\iSight Updaters\iSight Updater
    For external iSights only.

  • Sync - FROM a full iPhone3Gs, TO a empty/clean/new install, of iTunes

I had problems with sync between iTunes-iPhone3Gs from day 1.
I have been using iTunes for the last 5-6 years, for my music-libery without any serious problem. The 1 day i connectet my iPhone, all seems to go/sync well. But allready the next day, i got problem with syncing the iPhone. I had to rename my iPhone, before i could sync again. I had this problem for some time(with 8-9 new names after all) and today i turned on my PC and everything in iTunes WAS: WIPED - EMPTY - CLEAN!!?
Well i cleaned out all "left-overs" of iTunes-Files, and made at new clean install(of iTunes - Last Version)
My problem is ....i cant find any ways to: sync my full iPhone over to empty iTunes( = load-off all my stuff FROM the iPhone TO iTunes on my PC)
and plz ..read what i ask for! - I KNOW, i can sync iTunes to my iPhone(but thats NOT what i ask for!) - the OTHER way arrround: FROM the iPhone, TO iTunes ...HOW is that done?!?
No matter how i try(to load all my: app's , programs, music, pictures, films ect. ect) ..it tell me, that it will copy all the stuff from iTunes(read that: Nothing) to my iPhone ..and I stop there ..because it really mean that it will wipe my iPhone too, if I proceed.
Since i had enough(when I lost all my music, thanks to a iTune-failure) i really dont wanna loose any more by making a "sync-wipe" to my iPhone!
For crying out loud... why do Apple make this so hard to work/figure out?? - this should be an easy task to save all my stuff and savings from my iPhone, into iTunes ...but NO ...it seem like the only thing it alows, is syncing FROM iTunes ..and since my iTunes is emty ..my iPhone will also end up emty, after a sync....!
Maan.. really, there should be names for making program that stupid(or hard to use/understand) - i like to eat apples, so i dont think that should be the word....!

So.. buttonline is - im ****** as long as i use an iPhone.
Thats sad - I really liked the phone ..the way it worked and the wide range of apps, that made it possible to tailoring the interface, to a degree beone my imagination.
But the fact, that because of "the potential" of someone maybe "stealing music", they throws the phone in chains ..and give this phone and an extra disadvantage compared to other mobiles?!?
To be honest - I'd rather lose the ability to listen to music on the iPhone than to end up with worse backup options.
This is primarily a phone - not an mp3(4)-player (apple has their ipod for that!) and it's grotesque to see how Apple choose to destroy the usability, just to ensure an unnecessary sideshow on the phone. That said - this is only a problem found on iPhone(Apple-product) - All other company has fully functioning solutions without it imposes restrictions on the phone usability - if Apple has a problem with this, they should prefer to remove music from the iphone, but to destroy the backup options with so many disabilities.
Music... That made me think alot!
I have(at home) more than 2000 CD's of music and those CD's, have ALL been bougth from legal stores/shops and should and should therefore be regarded as legal. I chose to copy all my music onto my private NAS Server, so everyone in my house can use it - Still fully legal(where I come from) because I own the music in CD's.
But because I did not buy music through itunes, itunes can not register or check if my music is legal. So I guess.. that itunes will probably judge me as a music thief, or what?!?
Sorry for doupllepost, but i could not edit my message

What happens when you try to redownload them ? What you can re-download (the types of content that you can redownload varies by country) will show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes, and the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your iPhone (and similarly for apps in the App Store app). If you still have your old phone then you should be able to copy your iTunes downloads from it over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
