New library and vault?

Hi i have been storing my aperture library on an external 1TB HD.
I have kept a vault on an identical drive.
both are nearly full now, so i was wondering.....
what should i do?
im all ready to but a couple of new drives to continue, but do i have to create a new library on the new drive and new vault on the other?
if i do this, does it mean i cannot access the old library?
im at a bit of a loss, so any advice is much appreciated!

I think you should be looking at referenced files at this point. See below

No, but you would have to switch back and forth between libraries- an easy task in A3 but IMHO unnecessary

Here's what I would do in your situation.
Let's say you now have four drives: one with your library, one with a vault you can't connect to (per your other thread) and two that are new, empty and formatted OSX.
1. Create a new vault on one of the new drives.
2. reformat the drive with the vault you can't connect to
Now you have a library drive, a vault drive and two blank drives
3. begin using referenced files for new projects and maybe some existing projects (By relocating masters) on one of the blank drives.
4. Use the other blank drive as a back up for your new referenced drive. You could use Time Machine for this if it's not already in use elsewhere- which it should be- but SuperDuper would be ideal.
So you have four drives:
A3library (on site)
A3vault (off site)
A3referennced (on site)
A3referenncedBU (off site)
Make sure you fully understand Managed Files and Referenced Files, and how they are backed up. When setting up the file structure on your referenced drive, remember that "failing to plan is planning to fail".

  • Problem with library and vault

I would like to know how to take all photos out of Aperture and start over.
When I upgraded to V.3, I think I set things up incorrectly. I had a vault but now there is no vault and I now have folders that appear under Projects & Albums that indicate Aperture Vault, Aperture Vault (1) and Aperture Vault (2). I did not make these folders. There are duplicates of photos in "Aperture Vault and Aperture Vault (1)" folders. I had used an external drive for the vault with V2 and now there is a Aperture Vault on the external drive and also on the internal drive and also an Aperture Library on both the internal and external drives. In the Vault and Vault (1) folders there are folders with the same names but different numbers of photos in the projects. I just would really like to start over and import my photos again; I don't really care about adjustments at this point, only the masters.
    Vault
    Vault(1)

    Linda,
You did not post the entire screenshot of your Library Inspector, but I suspect I know what's going on.  Is the "Vault" a blue folder, as well as the "Vault(1)"?
I also have a top-level folder called "SimpleDrive Vault", which was the name of an Aperture 2 vault which I had to restore. (I had the unfortunately coincidence of a hard drive going bad the day I was intended to install Aperture 3.  I got a new hard drive, installed Ap 3, and then restored the Ap 2 library to start.)  When restoring your vault, Aperture may just create a new top-level folder with your vault name underneath it.  There is nothing wrong with it.  It is not your vault.  It is a folder with your vault name.  You can choose to restructure everything (I.e., drag and drop stuff wherever you want), although you may have duplicates.
I imagine that the duplicates are part of the problem you are trying to solve.  However, there is no way around it.  To "start over", as you asked, you will necessary have to send every photo outside of Aperture, duplicates included, and them import them.  I.e., you will have duplicates no matter what.
To answer your question specifically, the best way to "start over" in your case is probably to "relocate Masters" for every photo in your library to a location of your choosing, trash your library (which would then contain only your project structure, and not any photos), and then create a new library and reimport your photos.  Keep in mind what I stated above, though.  You will just end up with a new library with the same structure as the old library.

  • Help! I accidentally added a new library and can't get into my old one!

So we recieved this Passport (a hard drive, like a USB Mass Storage) with a TON of music on it. So I was going through the music, manually clicking-and-dragging each music file I wanted into a folder on the desktop. The folder was underneath iTunes.
As I was dragging a Justin Timberlake song, I accidentally dragged it into the iTunes icon. A window popped up and said something along the lines of: "This something cannot support something and iTunes will need to create a new library. Yes. No." So I pressed yes and continued dragging music files into the folder on my desktop.
Later, as I was transfering the music in the folder to iTunes, I finished and pressed sync. Yet, when I looked on my iPod after the sync, none of the music showed up. So I checked my library and it was a completely new library, with none of my old songs on it--- just the new ones!
So as I frantically fumbled around iTunes for a few hectic hours, all I accomplished was getting all of my old music into the new library, and finding my old library.
During that time, I had pressed iTunes help at one point and it had told me that if there are two libraries in iTunes, you can only view the other libraries songs and videos. So when I go to my old library, the songs (titles, album names, and artists) are faded out (grey-colored instead of black)!
So now I have all my new songs and old songs in the second library and also all the new songs and old songs in a playlist. The only way I can even VIEW my OLD library is by connecting my iPod and viewing the old library while it's faded.
How do I combine them? How do I get rid of the old library and just use the new one? HELP!!!

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Process of updating library and vaults?

Hi, I am wondering what the process is for updating the library and vaults? Does it require a substantial amount of time? I am also wondering about making a duplicate of the library prior to upgrading(power failure, bugs, etc.), to save having to rebuild from a vault in v.1.5 , and doing the V2 upgrade again?
Anybody already done this that can comment?
    thanks

Ah, that's bad. Wasn't the fw update released for you through FOTA?
Now that youre phone is "dead" due to a failed fw update you should see this guide by Psychomania in the "ppol of knowledge" section: /t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/Recovering-from-a-failed-firmware-update/td-p/398147
This will tell you what to do.

  • Can I remove a new library and go back to using my original library?

Our hard drive crashed and we now have a new hard drive on our original computer.  I downloaded iTunes on this new system and created a new library.  I didn't realize when I created a new one, that you could only have one and I'd have to sync it all again.  A pop up came up stating that I could erase all things on my iPod and sync with the new library.  I don't want to do that, I just want my original library to work. I did make some new purchases on this new library as well and want them to be in my original library.  How can I get rid of this "new" library and get my original one on this new system in our computer.  I don't want to lose all that I have saved.  Thanks so much.

The shuffle is not a backup device.
Was the media actually moved from the old computer to the new computer? If not, how did you magically make the content appear on the new system?
Use the backup of the old computer to put all the content on the new computer.

  • Paired HDs for Library and Vault?

When I did the T3 a few years back (A1.5), the instructor said that the Library and the Vault should be on exactly the same size, brand etc Hard Drives and that they should be the only things on those drives. I don't even remember the rationale now, but I think it was the idea that the vault is a mirror of the Library. In any case, I've had it that way for years.
I recently had problems with the vault drive and created a new vault on another drive that's not a match. My question is whether this ever mattered, and if it matters now.
I really don't see why it would considering that the vault really isn't an EXACT mirror of the library anyway. Also, that recommendation included the use of a fully managed library which I no longer do.
(However, I do still use dedicated drives. I think that matters.)

I've never done this, in 4 years of use of Aperture.
    I don't think it's necessary.

  • My iTunes randomly cuts off songs at the end. I've tried to create a new library and reimport my old library, but to no avail. Can anyone help? :)?

Hi, I am using a MacBook Pro, and downloaded the new iTunes update. I have OS X Lion 10.7.4. It all of sudden is randomly cutting off some songs before the very end of the song. I've tried to read past posts and create new libraries and re-import the old one, but it doesn't seem to help. It is not all of my purchased songs, nor is it all of my downloaded from CD songs, it's just a particularly random set of songs (I haven't checked them all, but it happens every 5 songs or so when I play the whole library on shuffle). This never happened to me before with other versions of iTunes, and when I called the support line the guy says he has never heard of this problem before... !
I have 3000 songs, so I don't want to manually bring each one in again. I am also not super technologically brilliant, so if you have had this problem too and have a simple answer, please help !!!

I have a similar problem with Itunes - the funny thing is it only does it on my Mac and not my PC running Windows 7 - seems strange the Apple software runs better on a Windows computer.  There are other posts about this here on the forums that have been running for two years with no solution - and I was just about to buy a new Ipod - oh well.

  • Somehow my itunes started a new library and I lost my old library. Itunes will not allow me to sync new music to my ipod without deleting stored music from ipod. How can I start using this new library and sync the new music without losing existing music.

Somehow my Itunes started a new music library and I lost the old library.  Itunes will not allow me to sync new music from my computer to my Ipod because it is now in a different library. Itunes wants to delete all my Ipod music before sync any new music. How do I work around this. I think this happened during Itunes Upates.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • How do you create a new Library and populate it with folders & shortcuts?

is it possible to create a new Library, have it on the start menu and populate it with folders and shortcuts within GPO's?

  • I downloaded a picture from Adobe and in doing so created a new library and now cannot find my original library with all my pictures

What version of iPhoto and system are you running? Where is your library normally located, in the Pictures folder or on an external HD?  How and where did you download the photo to? Describe in detail.
Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and see if more than one library is displayed in this window:
If you see your origial library select it and open.
If you don't download and use  Find Any File to search for "Library6.iPhoto".  That's a file that's unique to iPhoto libraries.  FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders.  If there's a second library on your HD FAF will find it.
When you find it drag it into your Pictures folder.

  • My laptop (macbook air) asked me which library I wanted to open iphoto with but there were no options of libraries to open it with - I had to create a new library and all of my photos were gone.

My laptop said I was running out of space on my start up disk and then I opened iphoto and it asked which library I wanted to open it with. There were no options available so I had to create a new library for my iphoto. None of my photos were on iphoto when I opened it again. The same thing happened with my photobooth - all of my photos have disappeared.
I tried to do alt + command when opening iphoto but it didn't help, however I found some of my photos in the masters folder I found when I right clicked on the iphoto file.
Please help I have all of my photos from the last 3 years on my iphoto!

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
    what fixes have you tried?
have you found where is your original library is located? Is there both an Old Masters and Masters folder in it?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
how much free space on your boot drive? It's strongly recommended to maintain a minimum of 10-15 GB of free space for optimal system and application performance.

  • Aperture Library and Vault: Why the difference in size?

My Aperture Library is 226 GB and the Vault that's supposedly backing it up is only 144 GB?
I recently upgrade from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. The Library is intact but has something happened after I updated the vault? I can't remember if the vault size was so much smaller before I transferred all the date from my old Mac to my new one. Should I delete everything on the external hard drive containing the Vault and create a brand new vault?
    Advice welcome.

A bit late, but just thought I'd add to this. Tidysteve is right, the previews can use up a lot of space. If you're using hi-res previews, they're effectively a JPEG of the same dimensions as the original file, so they can be quite big. If I do hi-res previews for my DSLR they can be up to 4 or 5 MB each so it could definitely explain the big difference.
Try rebuilding your previous at a smaller size. BUT, do it when you've got nothing else to do and walk away for a while as it will take a loooong time.

  • My Ipod wont sync with my new library and I dont know why not. It will show that it is connected through home sharing, but it is only avalible when i am with my laptop! I dont know how to get this current library as mine on my ipod, help!

My ipod will not sync with my laptop. I have had previous Ipods in the past, but since then I have grown out of most of my music. Also about a year and a half ago I got a new laptop. I used the same Itunes name, but now on my new Ipod it has all of my old music and it refuses to download any of my new music. When I am using home sharing though, it says that I can turn on my "Library" but that my "music" is what is perminately on the computer. This only works though if I am near my laptop. When I try to transfer my library onto my ipod it wont let me. My music on my ipod is completely different than my normal itunes library on my computer and I have no idea how to transfer it. When I plug it in, it wont sync at all, or show that there is any device even plugged in. I am frustrated and tired of not having any  of my music, so someone please help!!!

You can only sync to one computer/iTunes library. To make this your syncing computer:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
