New Library - Erase and Sync??!!

OK, I've searched this site and found a lot of opinions, it seems, but I'm looking for a definitive answer, please.
My girlfriend has an iPhone that was once registered to her ex-husband's computer/iTunes.  She still has the iPhone, but she has a new computer.
She has NEVER synched the iPhone to this new computer and she has absolutely no music on the iPhone - just Contacts & Apps.
We connected the iPhone to her Mac the other day and it did a full backup when we chose to "sync".
Then, when we went to add Music on her computer to be synced to the iPhone, this message popped up (which we cancelled):
The iPhone 'My iPhone' is synced with another iTunes library.  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time.
Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
Now, again, this ONLY comes up when we try to set up syncing Music to this iPhone.  That is the only change we're trying to Apply at this time.
So, will only all the music once (actually never) stored on the iPhone be erased and replaced?
Or, will other things get caught up in the "erase" action of this process?
And, if other things -- what "other" things, specifically??  Apps??

You seem to have issues understanding what I said. I didn't ask for help because clearly, no one on here has the answers I need. You seem to be wanting to kick me out because YOU thought you were all knowing and I stepped in to let you know you are not? I am not thread jacking. This post came up when I was looking up how to do the solution I said. I was reading through and saw your post. I am just notifying you so that you can know a little more and be less of a jerk when you are helping people out. You can't say "you didn't just update your iTunes because that doesn't happen when you update iTunes" because it happened to me JUST updating iTunes and you can't say "there's no way around it." I have downloaded itunes in new computers without having to resync my iPhone so there IS a way around it (on a pc, idk about a mac. On a pc you can make itunes think you have synce that phone before.) Just because you don't know, doesn't mean those things don't happen or aren't possible. You are NOT all knowing. Don't bash me because I said you were wrong. How about you say "leave this thread and come back when you come with a solution." See? That's a jerk-y response but would've gotten me to leave.

    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.

  • HT1414 having bought a new MacBook, I wanted to Sync my iPhone4 to it, but it insists the only method to do so is to "Erase and Sync" or "Cancel" which leaves no option to just use iTunes on the new MacBook Pro - how annoying is that???

I have had the iphone4 for 2 years now and I bought a new MacBook Pro, opened iTunes and it knew I already had other machines with iTunes sync'ed with it but it still insisted on offering one option or sync'ing with new MacBook - "Erase and Sync", which means deleting EVERYTHING on the iphone. What if I want my iPhone to dictate and get iTunes on the Macbook to match up with the iPhone??? Or at least get iTunes to relate to what my iTunes account obviously has on it and update that way. Come on Apple, as per usual, very pretty but not very practical!!!

You can only sync everything with your one syncing computer/iTunes library. Yu can:
    - Make this your syncing computer by:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
    - Use the manual method to copy music and videos from any computer/iTunes library to the iPod. See the manual method included here:

No, it will sync the ipod to the content of the MBA which presumably has nothing on it (= erasing content of iPod and replacing it with nothing).

  • I want to be able to sync my iPhone 5 to my new iTunes library (new computer) and erase old music. When I connect my iPhone I have no option to "erase and sync."

So I have the iPhone 5. My old computer crashed so I ended up purchasing a new computer and re-installing and downloading all my old music and new music.
When I connect my iPhone to my new computer I can sync music but the old music still remains on my iPhone as well as the new music.
There's a lot on the phone that I don't want anymore but I can't seem to figure out how to erase it.
I don't want to restore the iPhone so I don't lose all my old messages and so forth.
I have all of the latest updates for the iPhone and well as iTunes.
If anyone has any answers to help that would be awesome!
    Thanks.

    Hey there,
It sounds like you are not getting the prompt to erase and sync your device. This indicates to me that Manual Syncing was enabled on the original iTunes Library, and becuase of that it is also now enabled on your new computer.
This is changable in the Summary tab of iTunes when you have your device selected, and this article will help you do that:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
Configure iPhone, iPad, or iPod for manual management
To manually manage the content, follow these instructions:
Connect the device to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. If your device isn't visible in the upper right corner of the screen, choose Library.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos."
    Click Apply.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

Yes. I have no personal experience with this, but it is possible to recover your music from an iPod. See this link: http://guides.macrumors.com/Recovering_Songs_from_an_iPod

I just bought a new computer, if I erase and sync my iphone to sync it to my new library, will I lose my apps?

    Hey cjacket13,
When you purchase applications on your iOS device, they are tied to your Apple ID so even if you lose them, you can re-download them from your purchase history.
That said, when you first sync your iPhone to your new computer you'll want to transfer purchases from your iOS device to the computer by following these directions here:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

  • HT1202 If I Erase and Sync my iPhone to my new library will I lose old data?

If I erase and sync my iphone to my new itunes library on my new computer will it erase my photos, videos and contacts too?

It will erase your contacts if you choose to sync contacts on the Info tab of your iTunes sync settings and sync to an empty contacts client.  To avoid this you must enter at least one contact in Address Book, Outlook or whatever you're syncing contacts with prior to syncing.  This will generate a merge or replace prompt for contacts when you first sync, choose merge.
Syncing doesn't touch your photos and videos in your camera roll (other than to include them in the iPhone backup).  It will, however, remove any non-camera roll photos or videos synced to your phone from your computer.

Copy your iTunes Library from your Old computer, or it’s Backup, to your New computer...
    See Here for one way
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
    Or...
From your Old Computer... Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
An Added Bonus is that you will then have a Backup of iTunes...

  • New iPhone 6 - "erase and sync" to iTunes library to add non-iTunes music

I'm handy with technology, but not a tech head so bear with me.
My iPhone 5 16GB died so I bought a iPhone 6 64GB. Set it up and then "restored" my old iPhone 5 info from my iTunes backup onto it. So far, so good.
I want to manually add music from the iTunes library onto the new phone. The Music app on my new phone shows I can download from the Cloud any songs onto to it that I purchased thru iTunes. Fine. But I want to move over some of the many songs I added to iTunes over the years from CDs, other online services, etc.
When I click "Manually manage music and video" and try to sync music I get the infamous "The iPhone is synced with another library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync to this library?"
This sounds like what I should do without worry as I have the phone recently backed up to the Cloud AND my iTunes, and have done little with the new phone since buying it. I've put all the iPhone photos on a hard drives, too. So if i "erase and sync," will this just repopulate my phone with all the previous info backed up on iTunes (photos, contacts, calendar, apps, etc) PLUS the music I want to manually add from the iTunes library?
I know this may sound elementary to some of you, but honestly - I can't find any clear explanations online of what will be deleted and what will be added with the "erase and sync" in this situation.
    Thanks, all.

Hi, when you indicate that you have checked the songs in the box, where do you mean you have checked them? In your Music Library, or do you mean on the Music Tab that you can only see when you hook your device up to iTunes and select the device? (i.e., in the same place where you see the "Summary" page).
    Cheers,

  • I just bought a new computer, now itunes tells me I can only sync with one computer.  It only offers me the choice to erase and sync.  I do not want to erase my ipod, I just want my music on the new computer.  Can't I just transfer the songs from the ipod

I just bought a new computer.  Itunes only offers me the option of erase and sync, as I can only have it sync'd with one computer.  I want to move my music to this computer from my ipod.  Is this possible, or do I have to go back to my cds and upload everything from there?  I just want to be able to move my music from my ipod to the new computer.

You need to transfer your iTunes Library from the old computer to the new one - then you can carry on syncing as normal. You can't move non-purchased music from an iPod to iTunes using iTunes. For purchased music, choose iTunes > File > Transfer purchases...

  • How do I save songs from old version of iTunes that I have on my iPod, as new verson is asking me to erase and sync before I can do ANYTHNG, and I don't want to lose my music!

    Hi everyone,
    Can anyone help?! Pleeeeease
I have recently bought a new computer (new operating system Windows 7) and downloaded the new iTunes. When I tried to add a new song to my iPod shuffle, it said I had to ERASE and SYNC my iPod to the 'new' iTunes, and there seems to be no way around it. I DON'T repeat DON'T want to lose all my music on my iPod, as I no longer have that music/my old laptop with music on, and there are so many songs on it that it would take like forever to re-download EVRYTHING.
I tried saving playlist on in iTunes, but it only saves it as a Read only file, there are no MP3's in there.
I'm tearing my hair out over this!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kitty

How you delete content from your iPod depends on how it is set up to sync with your iTunes library whether that be automatically or manually.
If it's automatically, you must reconfigure your settings so that the album you wish to remove is no longer configured to sync to your iPod.  For example, if the Sync only checked songs and videos option is enabled from under the iPod's Summary tab, make sure all the tracks for this album do NOT have a tick mark next to them in your iPod.  Then resync your iPod with iTunes.
Otherwise, if you manually manage your iPod's contents, you must manually remove content from it.  You can do this by plugging your iPod in and clicking the small black triangle next to your iPod from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes.  This will open up a submenu of content, so go ahead and click on Music. Locate the track or tracks you wish to delete. Highlight them and hit the Delete key or choose Edit -> Delete.
