New Library, re-imported photos: How to salvage album data etc?

Hi,
I had that problem that seems quite widespread, with iPhoto that wouldn't load anymore (the endlessly rotating loading symbol and, ages later, the "unexpectedly quit" message).
I really wanted to see my new photos, so I moved the iPhoto Library to the desktop and created a new library. My new photos loaded fine from my camera, and I was up and running again.
Since, I have tried reimporting photos from my old library (to do this I clicked and dragged the folders for 2005 and 2006 onto the library in iPhoto under "Source".)
The good news is that it seems that all my photos have loaded without any problem. I did get a message that a number of files (all of them "thumbs") were unreadable, but when I checked them in the new Library folder, they seem to be there...)
Now the problem I face is that, of course, I have lost all my filing information, i.e. albums and photobooks. I have not created any new ones since.
Any chance I can just copy them in ? If so, can you tell me which file(s) I should copy from the old library to the new one ? I don't dare copy them all in case I get back to where I started, i.e. iPhoto won't load...
This is what is in my new Library:
AlbumData.xml
Dir.data
iPhoto.db
iPhoto.ipspot
iPhotoLock.data
Library.iPhoto
Thumb32.data
Thumb64.data
ThumbJPG.data
My old Library has the same list, but also has iPhoto Cache in it, with a lot of folders inside. My new Library has iPhoto Cache alongside it rather than inside it, and it is empty.
Thanks for your patience!

Thanks Lori,
Actually, I found the answer in one of your other posts - I downloaded and used iPhoto Library Manager and rebuilt the original corrupt library. I lost my photobooks but I got all my albums back. And I have now created backups so that I'll be safe in the future!

I moved LR5 catalog (Irdata & Ircat) to a new hard drive and photos. Lost all meta data - How do I move meta data along with catalog?
The meta data for each image is missing.
I have over 2,000 images. I don't want to go back through each image and add meta data.
Is there some way to move everything?

No, do not re-import your images. I assume you can see the thumbnails in the library module, just cannot access the full images, right? If this is the case there should be an exclamation mark in the top right corner of every one of your pictures and you only have to tell LR where the images are now.
Click the exclamation mark of one of the images and a dialog window should pop-up, telling you that LR cannot find the file, but with an option to locate it. Press "Locate" and navigate to the folder on your new HD where the file is. If in the new external HD you kept the same folder structure that you had on the internal disk, LR will be able to find all your images and re-link them to the database without further intervention.

  • Confused...how do I import photos into a particular album?

I'm trying to import a bunch of Hubble Space Telescope photos into iPhoto. They are in a folder on my hard drive. I'd like them to go into an album I created titled "Astro photos for iPad".
Is there any way of picking selected photos and importing them directly into that album?
I rarely use iPhoto, but every time I do, it's a major head-scratcher. I don't know why, but I simply do not understand the interface or organization (folders, albums, events, etc.). The PDF help manual doesn't cover importing photos from the hard drive. I'm sure iPhoto works wonderfully for regular users. I know it's me, not you!
Where do the imported photos go? Are they in the aether until you, somehow, find them and then drag them into an album? How do you find them?
It seems that the strategy is to give an import an event name as the way to group them, but then I can't find the event. (It's usually mixed in with a bunch of dated events.)
Here's the complication in this case. I have dozens of images in that Hubble folder. I'm in iPhoto. I'd like to import selected ones. I have to import them one at a time because I'm checking on which image is which. Then they get lost as they were taken, and saved/dated, at different times. I suppose my only recourse is to create the iPad Hubble folder first outside of iPhoto and then import them in one fell swoop.
I know this will all sound ridiculous to those who use iPhoto regularly or simply just get it, but I'm lost in space--literally!
Any suggestions on making my way back to Earth would be greatly appreciated!

I have read through the explanation provided but unfortunately you just explained iPhoto.  I believe the original question was how do you import photos directly into an album and bypass "EVENTS" and "PHOTOS".
I know this an old thread but I need help in doing this.  I have my camera connected, and I have created an album specifically that I want these pictures to go into.  Any advise?  Thank you,
    You can't do it.
iPhoto works like iTunes. All the tracks are in the Library, each playlist contains references to the tracks in the Library. So a track can be in any number of playlists without using extra disk space.
In iPhoto, all the phoots are in the LIbrary. Each Album contains references to the photos in the Library. So a photo can be in any number of Albums without using extra disk space.
Events and Photos are views of the LIbrary. Two doors into the same room, as it were.

Did you delete the receipts before reinstalling?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

Thanks @ KiltedTim, but losing "only" any data is really not acceptable and, in this case, the phone had not been backed up, but thanks for taking the time. Also, yes, fungible means what I think it means. An iphone is a completely substitutible commodity, unlike my data, so instructions that inform me as to how to fix a phone I could replace for a small sum of money while failing to address the more important issue of the data are almost useless - they potentially save me the $99 it would cost me to replace the phone if I were so inclined to trust another apple product. Not worth the hour it took to find them or the 35 minutes on the phone to confirm my suspicions about the data.

I'm new to the LabView. How do I pass data from VI configured using Serial (CMTS using CLI commands to set Parameters ) to VI configured using GPIB(vector signal analyzer ) to measure such as RF frequency or power on the instrument?
I just want to set something on the front panel that will execute the Serial parameters first and then pass these settings to vector signal analyzer
    Thanks
    Phong

    You transfer data with wires.
Frankly, I'm a little confused by your question. I can't think of any reason why you would want to pass serial parameters (i.e. baud rate, parity) to a GPIB instrument. Please explain with further detail and attach the code.

No. Only those Apps that are not installed on the new will migrate over.

  • IPhoto '11 refusing to detect ANY new faces in imported photos

I've been using iPhoto forever.  It's always "just worked."  I just got back from vacation and imported all of my photos.  After deleting half of them and doing only some very minor "tweaks" (adjusting levels, etc.) to a few of them, I wanted to name the faces.
I noticed that iPhoto didn't identify a single face in the 150 or so just-imported pics.
Also, the button to manually add a face is grayed out!
Tried "Detect Missing Faces" but it does nothing.
Any ideas?  Anybody seen this before?  This is a new one to me and I did browse the Discussions and haven't seen this one.
Thanks in advance for your help.

iPhoto 11 seems extremely buggy. I think I'm going to downgrade back to the prior version. Anyone have suggestions before I take this action?
Not really - have you upgraded to version 9.1.1?
    Problems:
    1) When ever I import new photos they no longer show up in new events or the "photos" grouping of all photos. They did get imported though and I can access them by selecting "last 12 months".
This can be a sort issue - they are there but not where you expect - look at the view menu ==> sore events
    2) If I manually try and split an existing event and all photos in the new event disappear from all listings.
How do you "manually" split an event?

  • Is there a way to select an Aperture library to import photo's?

Hi, I use multiple libraries in both Aperture and iMovie to keep size and speed under control.
The problem is that when importing photo's, iMovie won't allow selection of an Aperure library for browsing and import.
Instead, it automatically adds a library for browsing, but not the right one!
I tried opening Aperture with the library I want to import from, hoping to change the default, but it doesn't change anything in iMovie.

Ok, but does this set it for FUTURE additions? In other words, if I select all the current podcasts I have and right click, get info, set EQ preset to spoken word, then say next week I add a new podcast will it automatically set it to EQ spoken word or will I have to do the same thing all over again?

  • How do I move imported photos into an existing album in photos

I have a large collection of photos in iPhoto, arranged into events and albums.
If I now import from my camera i open up photos, not iPhoto.
After importing images how do I add specific images to one, or more, of my existing albums.
If I close photos and open iPhoto I can still import to iPhoto but the images do not appear in photos.

Enable the Sidebar if it isn't showing (View menu > Show Sidebar), then drag the photos into the album icon on the sidebar.

  • Placement of new events and imported photos

With iPhoto 09 it seems that when importing new pictures that the new event now falls at the end of the window so that I must scroll down to look at my most recent photos. It seems that they used to appear at the top of the main iPhoto window. Can I reverse this for events and also the imported photos themselves so that all new photos and events are at the top rather than at the bottom?

Yes just change the Sort Order for Events, it is in the VIew menu.

  • ?s about restoring library, recovered 800+ photos with File Salvage

I made two errors that caused me to lose the photos I'd imported to my new internal hard drive. I was determined to start off right and stick to good rules of organization I've learned on this forum. The errors were that I deselected in advance preferences to have iPhoto import the original (thanks again Old Toad, for solving that mystery for me) AND then I emptied the trash and of course the originals got dumped. OT pointed me to File Salvage and I decided to pony up with the purchase. Last night I pulled out huge groups of jpegs onto my external hard drive.
There seemed to be no way in File Salvage to focus only on the jpegs in the already emptied trash. I think it was showing me all jpegs on my computer. I started finding a photo I wanted, hitting restore and then looking for my next photo. I quickly realized that each photo was then appearing on my ex HD in two layers of folders and each was called jpeg 1. There is no way I wanted to open all those individual folders to get to each photo. There is no apparent way to select some of the photos as you preview them in File Salvage to do a mass export of only the ones you selected. I decided I'd rather transfer huge bunches of them and use Preview to cull out all the backgrounds, and tons unwanted jpegs. This would not be an acceptable solution if I didn't have a brand new HD. I cannot imagine wading through years' worth of jpegs or larger libraries.
Now I have a few photos of hundreds of images. I have a few questions about when I get ready to re-import to iPhoto:
Is there anyway to reunite the photos with the PICT title assigned to it when taken? I want them to show the time and date they were taken too. I don't know how I'll sort them back into rolls without that aid. Right now they are a completely jumbled mess sorted by size so I could rule out the thousands of jpegs in the small KB size and zero in on the 1-4 MB size my camera produces. (Strangely I found a few in the 18-20 MB size???)
I will be putting the originals into folders to regroup them with the subjects or events they were taken from but that still leaves me hundreds of photos in each category in some cases. I'm so used to using iPhoto to sort by name, title, date and I don't know if all that gets masked with the recovery and makes it look like all these photos were taken on the same day.
I still have my thumbnail aliases neatly organized in iPhoto from when I thought I imported all the missing photos. When I reimport do I get more thumbnails? Should I empty my iPhoto library completely before I bring the originals in? Remember that I'm working with a brand new HD and these mistakes affected everything I have in iPhoto. Right now iPhoto only contains the thumbnails, metadata information, and the modified photos that were rotated in my camera.
I'm looking at hours of tedious work to restore my photos and any suggestions that will streamline my efforts would be welcome.

    MacLoyal:
I know of two ways you can rename them, temporarily, sequentially so you can get them into a single or a few folders.
1 - create a "container" folder and put all of the other folders into it.
2 - download and launch the iView MediaPro demo.
3 - in the new catalog window drag the "container" folder.
All of the files will be imported into the catalog. You can check to see if the capture date in the files has been preserved by selecting a photo and clicking on the Info button at the top. Then in the Photo EXIF section you can see if the capture date is intact. If so then you can sort on the capture date to get them in chronological order. (If needed click on the house button in the tool bar to see all photos in the catalog).
Now select all and go to the Action->Batch Rename menu item. There select Date and the number from 1. In the #### field put in 3. That will make the last part of the file name -001.jpg, -002.jpg, etc. so they will list correctly in the finder. The old and new names will show in the bottom like this. If you have more than 999 files to rename make that #### field = 4.
Once they have been renamed you can group them as desired and select and drag them to new folders on the desktop that you've created for that purpose. Of drag directly into an open iPhoto window to create a roll of those particular images. To indicate which ones you've moved hit the 1,2 ...9 keys to assign a color label to them after moving.
The other way is, after putting all of those folders into a container folder, open the container and type Command-F. Then in the Search window select the following criteria:
    File type = image
File size is greater than 100 KB
That will find all of the full sized image within all of those folders. Do a select all and drag into an open iPhoto window. The files will be copied and will be titled jpg 1.jpg, jpg 1_2.jpg, jpg 1_3.jpg, etc.
You can then do your arranging however you want, batch change the title, sort by date if the the capture date is still there. If you want to physically rename the files you'll have to export them to the desktop using the Use Title option. Then reimport to the library and delete the first set.

  • Incorrectly imported photos  - how to move?

I have all my photos organized at the file system level, and have Aperture catalogue reference these photos (not stored into the library).
    The structure is:
    My Picture (project)
    --- Folder 1 (folder)
    ------>Album 1 (album)
    --------->photos
    ------>Album 2
Recently I imported new set of photos under a new project at the root level (same level as My Pictures), by mistake.
I have already done all my editing of this new set of photos.
I would like to move these new photos in the same structure as illustated above (such as Album 3 and photos in there).
Tried moving but Aperture does not allow. How can I correct it?

Aha. I have figured out the problem. When I drag a version that is part of a stack to an album, the entire stack comes with it. What I want is only to drag the version. Once in the album, I can't delete the other versions in the stack and just keep the one I want. I can only keep or remove the whole stack.
So I guess my question would now be how to move one and only one of several versions of the same master to an album without having all the others come along with it.
Thanks for pointing out the Remove from Album command. I had not seen that before.

  • How to import photos into Folders or Albums from backuped CD-R

    I need you advice.
I made folders of photos in CD-R when I backuped. I would like to import them into each folders and album I made in i photo newly from the folders on CD-R. Even though I select "Add library" under "File" and drag& drop and copy from Finder window/ CD-R window, all are just imported into Library.
    Many thanks,
    Mac

    Hi Mac Ito,
Here is something I typed out a couple of days ago for a response to another person. It might help you also.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
    Hope this helps!
    Lori
