New line, just connected...

Hi all
You might have seen some of my posts in the past where I've been trying to squeeze out the most from a long rural line..
Just moved into a flat whilst working in Canary Wharf so have had new service activated (phone and bband). Was getting excited about the 5 to 12Mb estimate but also aware this area does struggle nearly as much as those living in the middle of no-where.
Anyway, here are the initial stats. One thing that stands out is it looks I'm not on ADSL2+ that is available at the exchange (Poplar)
Just thinking about my options..if I call BT I will obviouly get the 10 day training line, maybe thats right, but it don't look right to me. Actual DL speed is around 1.65Mb.

no that was the upgrade to 21cn but with your attenuation there will be no difference between adsl2 up to 12mb and adsl2+ up to 20mb as you will probably get about 6mb. the change from adsl2 992.3 and adsl2+ 992.5 is based mainly on line quality and is automatic and controlled by exchange equipment - there is no switch which gets flicked to go from to to the other - I have been there when I first came to the forum

First off .mac/,me has been having weird problems today... so might be temporary.
Unplug the iPhone.
Quit Mail.First I'd backup your whole Mail folder. Right click on it, choose Archive. Move the Mail.zip to a safe place.
Try dragging this file to the Desktop, (in case we need to put it back), first, then logout/in, reconfigure your account required on this one...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
/Users/YourUserNameLibrary/Mail
Move this folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail

New line connected today, someone else also gaven ...

Hi today my new line was connected, i then recieved a call from a random person telling me this was meant to be their number today, they say they got the letter saying the same numb as mine, now he says he has gaven this numb out to his patients as he is a doctor.
Can someone please explain to me how BT have managed to screw this new cnnection up so badly?
I called BT they say theres no record of them issuing this number to anyone else!!!
What a complete joke this is, can't even connect a line up without screwing up.
BT if your reading this, I demand an answer right now!

When a landline order is placed a temporary number is allocated, but it's never guaranteed as it can change once the service is "live", and I'm guessing the caller was allocated the number in question when they originally ordered the service.
Customers should never give out the temporary numbers as they cannot be guaranteed, but by the sound of this the caller wasn't advised of this.
For some reason the number must have become spare (possibly because there was a problem with the original order) and when your line was activated the number in question was then given to you (numbers are allocated from a general “pool”, and the first available is given).
I don’t have any way of knowing how the number became spare from the doctor’s order, however as the number would have been temporary against his order, then become spare and it's now live against your account we wouldn't have a way of tracing it back to the doctor's order.
This is also assuming the doctor ordered the service with BT. if they ordered with a different provider we wouldn't be able to access the account at all - even if we had their account number - as it would be on another service provider's database.

I know. I actually passed an OpenReach van 500 meteres from my house today. Stopped and asked if there was any way, at all, the guy could help me out or check on the status of the BT marked manhole cover outside my house (<1 min away). Was told 'Sorry, not my job, can't help you, I'm here to sort out another property and I'm lost'. I said I fully appreciated he had other work, but was there any chance he could take just 5 mins to help me out. I was told 'no way, not my area, sorry'. Said that OpenReach would need to commission a 'survey' of my property to sort this out. Frankly, he couldn't get out of there quick enough.
Sad thing is, my neighbour had an Engineer out (as I was promised by BT) and it was all sorted in a few minutes and was simply activating a connection in the exchange box (or whatever it is) outside my house.
Crazy thing, is they will just end up sending another OpenReach van out to sort this out. At some point. Maybe.
As you say . . . OpenReach just do what they want. I don't blame this guy specifically, but it would be nice if he took a second out to help everyone out.
BT call centre, meanwhile, just helplessly say that they can't tell me any more for 36 hours.

I have just connected my new apple tv, in the main menu I see only two icons; "computers" and "settings". Where do I find the icons for internet, movies etc. We do not live in the US..

The unit has full WiFi access with no problems, I can access ITunes on my laptop via home sharing no problem.

Glad that this solved your problem but if you searh past threads there are a LOT of people with identical problems.
Reading through the threads my take is
There seems to be something awry with wifi chipset. Typical symptoms are initially being able to connect to connect to a Wifi network then the connection is dropped. Then you see just the 'computers' and 'settings' icons on screen
Power off, reset and factory restore doesnt seem to solve it
Occasionally its nearby antenna cables etc causing interference
One report with convincing evidence it was the HDMI cable, swapping to anotehr cable fixed the problem
Plugging in ethernet works, this is purely a wifi issue
Sometimes plugging in ethernet temporararily wakes up the wifi
Many people seem to have exchanged their units only for the same thing to happen to the new unit a few weeks later. Just wondering if its a fomponent fail or heat issue.

Photo Stream does not count towards your iCloud storage plan.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 Photos in the Photo Stream album. Only photos taken within the last thirty days and since Photo Stream was activated will be synced.

My mistake, it was nothing to do with format. It woldn't sync because my movies were HD. HD movies won't sync to an iopd classic 160 GB but when you purchase a HD movie, itunes gives you a SD vervsion of the movie which is compatible with the ipod. Just needed to go to store, click movies, click purchased and untick the HD box and there you have the SD versions. Download the SD versions and then sync your ipod and bobs you uncle, movies are on the ipod

Argh! New line not being connected, although BT Op...

New customer, new line ordered 03/08/11. Existing phone provide is VM. There is a BT Master socket in house but socket condition unknown.
BT Engineer due to come out 19/08. On 8:03 on 19/08, got a text to say they had cancelled the visit as socket & wiring exists and everything is active (phone & BB).
Except it's all dead. Master socket, behind faceplate gives no dial tone or power to phone. If I ring the line from a mobile, it rings, but nothing in the house. Tried different phones etc. There are 2 wires connected to the back of the master socket NTE5 plate.
So, 2 engineer callouts 19/08 and 20/08. 19/08 cancelled on day and 20/08 cancelled without notice. Bear in mind I had paid and ordered an engineer visit. Grrrrrr!

Slow connection, rural location - new line

I live in a pretty rural location and used to have a capped 500kbps connection (wich gave us about 350 speed wise)!
I recently moved to ADSL max with BT and the initial profile was giving us about 1meg speed with a little bit of instablility but not bad.
Anyway - we have had constant line problems as we have an old exposed, worn line hanging between trees - had numerous call outs and repairs after broadband dropped, had noise on line, then no line at al etc etc etc.
Anyway - FINALLY BTOZ came and replaced a long length of the line. The engineer banged on about what a big difference this would make, how speed and stability would be increased etc.
So - they 'appar' to have finished and it seems not to have made any difference. I have a download speed of about 750 and daily disconnections.

If all your line changes are very recent then your connection could be back in training mode for 10 days. your attenuation of 63.5 is as high as your router reports but the actual attenuation may be higher which would give a lower speed - see here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

your profile is correct for your speed so to increase your profile your need to get a faster speed.

Hi, Probably panicking but am going on holiday in two days and can't go off without iPod so need to buy a new one tomorrow night if I can find one and then upload over night, do I need to load the software again or is it just plug and play. Thanks for your help K

Just connect the new one and follow the on screen instructions, it will find your existing software and update from iTunes.

I Just Added A New Line For My Sister, new # isnt there?

Well, my family had added another line to our plan. We have ordered her phone already, and completed the whole transaction. Then I went to my verizon account, and I checked all our phone numbers, and the new line we added isn't there? Is the number supposed to show up later on? I have just ordered this morning.

The same thing just recently happened to me on my account, I received the phone and everything but I couldn't activate it via online or by phone so had to call customer service, they activated right then. Just keep checking your order status online to make sure everything processed fine because it may just be activation issue they are having.

Contacts are not part of the backup. Contacts, when using your phone as intended, are synched to your computer's Outlook, Address Book or with a cloud service. If you haven't been using your phone as intended, then your contacts are gone.

Why must you return it? The computer is still as good as when you purchased it.
Don't get caught up in the "I have to have the newest latest thing" trap. There is always something new coming out around the corner. If you keep trying to time your purchases you'll end up either frustrated because Apple does not conform to your schedule, or waiting too long to make a purchase when you really need a new computer.
Buy what you need when you need it. A computer is obsolete when it no longer meets your expectations of what it should do.
