New logic board, still boot problems with Turbo Fans

I bought a 2Ghz dual G5 from a guy on craigslist and he told me that the Geniuses at the Apple Store said it had a bad logic board. So I bought a brand new logic board from DVwarehouse.com, and installed it along with a new set of matched RAM from Crucial, a new HD, new PRAM battery, new video card and a new superdrive. The only thing original are the processors and power supply (and fans, of course).
When I start it up, after the chime it quickly goes into "turbo-fan mode", which I have read that means the Op Sys didn't load correctly. Many restarts later, I was able to reset the nvram in the Open Firmware, but that didn't seem to help at all. I also pressed the SMU button (according to Apple's directions), but that didn't help much either.
I've had a few successful boots, but always with the fans going full blast. I though that once I got Leopard loaded onto the HD, then it would calm down with a software update. But before I ever get that far, the G5 hangs. Sometimes the G5 will boot and access the HD but hangs soon after. Sometimes I can get it to boot off the Leopard DVD. But most of the time it just boots and sits there slowly spinning up the fans into turbo mode.
The few times it has booted to access the HD or DVD, the fans go turbo right away. Other times it will boot with a chime, but then it won't access the HD or DVD and I get noting on the display.
I should say that this behavior is almost identical to how it was acting before I replaced the logic board. But how can that be? It should be a new computer, unless the problem is in the CPUs. Is that very likely? How would I find out if the CPUs are bad?
I've been reading alot about the problems I'm having with this G5 and what I've been having seems to be very common. But I've run out of fixes. Is there anything I can do to fix this machine or is it just money down the drain?

my iMac 20" G5 experience since December 2004, even though I love this machine,it has gone through 3 power supply (661-3350) replacements and 3 logic board replacement since late 2004. Pretty crazy for a single machine but I still love it. The last logic board replacement did NOT fix my boot up problem, as I expected, and the genius finally agreed to replace the power supply and that fixed it. SO: My recommendation to you is "replaced the power supply" here is one place you can get one: http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Power-supply-180W-for-iMac-G5-20--100v-661-3350---614 -0353-----NEW-p-25613.html

  • Can the newer logic boards still read the mac pro 1.1 2.66ghz duo core proc

i just bought a G5 and i am looking to upgrade it. I just bought the 2.66 ghz processors, and I am looking to buy a new logic board and was wondering if i bought a 2009 logic board would it still be compatible with the 2006 processors?

Unlike PCs (that stayed with one Hardware manufacturer year after year, and therefore did not change much of anything for decades) Mac hardware has been allowed to evolve over time. Macs have gone through several different processors from different manufacturers over the years.
It is a tribute to the superior engineering of the Mac Operating System that Apple has been able to extend and migrate Mac OS to accommodate wildly different hardware. Enormous incompatibilities tend not to appear all-at-once.
But change must eventually come. If you fancy running Mac OS X 10.6, it runs only on Intel Processors. The G5 is the last of the Motorola/IBM PowerPC processor series. The first was released about 1994 (PowerPC 601 in the 6100 series) and the last G5 was discontinued about 2006. There are a great number of people still running G4 and G5 Macs, generally using Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5. There are still a number of fairly vibrant forums on this Hardware and Software.
But if you want to end up with a working Mac Pro, you need to start with a Mac Pro chassis, not a G5 chassis. As Kappy points out the Processors, drives, peripheral interfaces, chassis cut-outs, Power Supply and most importantly Airflow/Cooling (with processor-controlled fans) are completely different, and there is no sensible way to adapt a G5 chassis to intel processors.
Starting with a Mac Pro chassis, the upgrades will only be difficult instead of impossible.

  • New Logic Board - now audio problem?

    Hi,
My macbook went in for repair the other day, they said it had a faulty logicboard so have inserted a new one. Now my sound seems to be very tinny and not very loud. This is a computer-wide thing so it's the same with itunes, on the net etc.
Is there anything I can do to try and get the audio back to normal or should I get in touch with the guys that repaired it again?
    Cheers,
    Tom

Yeah that's what I thought. I'll get back in touch with them at the start of next week. At least the machine is staying on now!
Just wondered if there were any settings that could have been altered.

  • Help! I have had my iMac G5 fitted with new Logic Board but it doesn't work

Help! I have had my iMac G5 fitted with new Logic Board but it doesn't work
I have just had my iMac G5 First Gen 1.8Ghz fitted with a new Logic Board under the Apple Repair Extension Programme for iMacs.
I got the iMac home from the repairers and switched it on and everything was working fine for about 2 hours and then all of a sudden the Error Page came up on the Screen (with a big On/Off Switch Logo) and it said I had to shut down.
So I shut it down waited a few minutes and then tried to re-boot it but nothing happened. All that happended was the Power Light in the Right hand corner came on..but nothing else....
Help! Any ideas what to do please?

If you have an external firewire drive (it has to be firewire, USB won't boot on a Rev A), plug it in to the firewire port and turn it on, then boot your iMac and see if it shows on the screen.
Have you tried to hit the eject (up arrow, the last button on the top row of the keyboard) button when you boot, perhaps the repairers left a disc in the drive? Then try and put your install disc in.

  • New logic board and network connection problems

My late 2007 MBP just had a new logic board installed. I have home and work wireless networks that are configured to connect automatically. This always worked flawlessly in the past. My MBP would find the network, connect and all was well. Since I've had the new logic board I'm having issues. The wireless network will be detected but an IP address is not assigned so I can't get on the network or internet. Both my home and work networks were set to assign a specific IP address to my computer. The MAC address detected by the router is correct, at least according to System Preferences.
The only way I can connect is to disable the firewall (Allow all incoming connections). When I do this I connect immediately to the network and everything works as normal. I can even turn the firewall back on and everything will be fine, that is until I leave work and turn the computer on at home. Then I have to go through this again. And then again when I go to work in the morning. I've tried deleting my router profile and resetting from scratch, deleting the network profiles in System Preferences and re-detecting. I don't know what else to try. It's an annoying problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Kevin

I think I have it fixed. One of the solutions I read about had to do with the 10.5.7 upgrade. I have always installed the smaller upgrades, not the larger "combo" upgrades. One tip suggested installing the full combo upgrade because, among other things, it re-creates two specific files that control how the computer interacts with the network. I installed the combo upgrade last Friday and connected without difficulty to the network at my office this morning. If I connect just as easily when I get home tonight I will consider the problem solved.
    Cheers!

  • Can applecare be extended with new logic board

My Imac is with apple having a new logic board fitted for the second time and before that they replaced the computer. Since my cover runs out in August 09 has apple been known to extend the cover when replacing the logic boards, if so how do you go about it.

If your iMac is still less than a year old, you can purchase the extended AppleCare out-of-pocket. If you already have an extended warranty, then you can no longer extend it any further.
Technically, replacement parts (such as a logic board) can have longer warranties than the rest of the computer. This is because replacement parts are covered by either a 90-day warranty, or the remainder of the limited/extended warranty, whichever is longer. This means that if you had a logic board installed on the last day of your warranty, the logic board would still be under warranty for another three months even after the computer's warranty had expired.

  • Just got my MBP back with a new logic board but...

    Hello all
I just got my laptop back yesterday. They did the logic replacement due to a bad graphics card (nvidia) I was not under warranty. I was having the Videocontroller error on the AHT. I just ran the AHT today via the apple disc. It came up with 4SNS/1/40000000:TGOD-86.500. I also noticed my superdrive does not accept blank disc media, it spits them out after a few seconds in. It still install and read programs off it. Burning discs is just the issue. I posted that issue here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12410595#12410595 But prior to the new logic board, it recognized the discs as "blank"
Please any help would be appreciated.
    Marc

I had an issue whereby only certain DVDs were usable.....some were, and some weren't.
My MBP went in for repair and the SuperDrive was replaced under my AppleCare extended warranty.
You'll likely need your SuperDrive replaced.
If I didn't have Applecare, I'd be up Shyte Creek by now with some very costly repairs on my September '08 MBP.
BTW, My MBP had two logic board failures in its second year of ownership which were replaced under my AppleCare warranty.

  • Kernel panic.. with new logic board

    Hi,
So I recently replaced my logic board after trying EVERYTHING to fix a somewhat frequently occuring kernel panic. Now however.. it has happened again.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I honestly feel like I've tried everything. Could it be bad RAM? I've changed the hard drive, done a fresh OS X install (perhaps its something in my settings from migrating my old stuff back over?), new logic board.. reset PRAM, every suggestion I could find.
Here is the old discussion before I changed the logic board. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3902490

Was it purchased from an official Apple Store, not a reseller?  Only Apple Stores sell official factory unlocked phones.  The others sell hacked to unlock phones, and the unlocking is unstable.
    Try these steps, as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and on/off buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    3. Replace SIM card (and reset network settings again)
    4. Restore Phone in iTunes using a backup
    5. Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

  • I am looking to upgrade my macbook pro 13". I have a new logic board and have searched for the spec on this i.e. hdd size and ram. will my 2009 screen work with a updated graphics card ??

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • Still having problems with wireless connections with the new lions os

is anyone else still having problems with there wireless connections on the new lions os?  What a poor job apple did

    No.

  • Apple installed a new logic board and now iTunes music is all gone and I cannot log into store or authorize my Mac

I have an early  2011 i7 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.4. Earlier this week I had Geniuses at the Apple Store install a new logic board to replace a failed one. My hard drive was not touched. Anyway, when I got home and launched iTunes, I discovered that none of the tens of thousands of legally purchased songs in my iTunes library were listed, even though they actually still exist in my Music folder. Additionally, my attempts to login to the iTunes Store with my valid and correct and accurate and current Apple ID with the correct password, did not work. In fact,  no errors were generated. The logins simply erased my input after clicking SIGN IN and then the "Sign In" form came back empty.
As a developer and 28+ year user of the Mac, I was a little stunned to say the least. The Apple Store logic board replacement process should take into account iTunes authentication problems when replacing failed logic boards, but this issue was not discussed at all, in any form during the repair intake process. So, I now have a 'fixed' MacBook Pro that will not acknowledge my thousands of legally purchased songs and will not let me log into the iTunes Store with my valid credentials or authorize or de-authorize my Mac.
Indeed, iTunes Match is also disabled, which means $30 thrown away in paid subscription.
Does anyone know a workaround to this Apple flaw that can correct their mistake and re-enable my Mac for using my thousands of legally purchased songs?
Any feedback would be most appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Larry

Having your main logic board replaced wouldn't erase music from your hard drive, if it was actually stored on the drive. Your iTunes music resides in your user home folder in a folder called Music.
When you do get a logic board replaced, however, it is a good idea to have the computer first de-authorized from iTunes since you are only permitted to associate your iTunes Store account DRM purchases (movies, tv shows, and older digital-rights-managed music) with up to five computers. See Deauthorize your computer using iTunes.
When a new logic board is installed, you'll need to reauthorize the Mac again. It's not the end of the world, however, if this step wasn't initially taken. See Authorize your computer using iTunes.
...As for not seeing your music when you launch iTunes—try point iTunes to the correct location of your iTunes folder. To do this, quit iTunes. Press the option key and click the iTunes icon in the dock. It will then ask you to navigate to the location of your iTunes music (again usually located in the Music folder in your home folder).

  • Poll: Do you have cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatal1t

    Hi guys:
I have post a thread regarding the cold boot problem with SB X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream 600W SLI power supply combination. Apparently, no one has answer to that . In addition, I have recently RMA'd my psu and received a brand-new unit. The same problem still exists. If the problem is really with the power supply, doesn't matter what kind of the setup I have, I should still have the cold-boot problem. However, it doesn't seem like that. Doesn't matter what kind of cards I put on the motherboard, as long as the SB X-FI Fatalty card is there, there is cold boot problem (even with the setup of cpu, mother, ram, and the sound card only, WITHOUT video card and harddri've). And for other different setup without the SB X-FI Fatalty card, there is no cold boot. The cpu and memory are running at stock speed.
My post regarding the cold boot issue:

There is one user on the forum saying he has the same problem. Therefore, I think it might be the imcompatibility between the X-FI Fatalty and OCZ GameXStream PSU.
I would like to know how many people that has the same problem that I am having. So I can possibly narrow down the problem and contact OCZ tech support or creative tech support with more information. It would also be benefitical to those who have the same problem as I do.
Please post your system setup as well in the thread.
Greatly appreciate your opinions. Message Edited by White_Hair on 2-02-200604:58 AM

I would venture to say that it isn't your powersupply, but more likely the X-Fi. I had troubles with my system, until I pulled out my X-Fi and replaced it with a non Creative Labs sound card. One of my troubles, which I incorrectly blamed on my powersupply was the ASUS A8R-MVP motherboard I had and the X-Fi XtremeMusic card, was after gaming for 4 hours, was the?sudden reboot of my system. Powersupply before, was an Antec TrueControl 2 550watt PSU. As it stands right now, I no longer have the parts mentioned and have a decent 700watt powersupply in my system, along with an ABIT AT8 32X motherboard. As you have probably seen there are a lot of problems with the X-Fi soundcards, and I in my right mind can't blame the motherboard, powersupply, motherboard chipset, ram, or any other component in ones system, if one is having trouble other than the X-Fi itself. I'll be honest, there is something quite frankly wrong with the X-Fi, and exactly what that is, I'll probably never know like most people.
