New look for Arch website?

Just noticed the Arch site has a new look, and the title graphic is now a link
Nice work!  Still nice and clean, just like Arch.
My only (admittedly small) gripe is that it looks quite blue on my monitor here at work.
I think I prefer the #f9f9f9 background of the forums to the new #eeeeff, but otherwise -- LOVE IT!

Is there a reason package search box is so big?  Header needs same padding as body on L and R, logo too small, looks like a wiki page.
Meh old one was perfect IMO
While I agree the old one was fine; MANY MANY people just couldn't/wouldn't see it.  You could direct them to the main page and say search for a package there and WAYYYY to many ppl would come back and say "I can't find it"
Just my guess as to the reason for different size/bg color of the search box

You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.

  • Possible new section for the website.

At the top right of the Arch website, you have the sevral tabs, e.g. "home", "forums", "wiki" etc. I personally think that a clincher for allot of brand new linux users is a "media" section.
When i first started using Linux, I used to browse round sevral diffrent sites for diffrent distro's and check out their screenshots, of course now ~3 years down the pipeline I know this means nothing, but for new users its a nice thing to see.
Last friday whilst I was at college, I was trying to "convert" one of my friends to Linux, explaining all the advantages of a package manager and a customisable init system, when all he cared about was distro screenshots, when he found none on the main page of the arch site, he quickly moved on to Fedora/PCLinuxOS etc.
The addition of an extra media section, listing community and stock backgrounds/screenshots I think would be a great addition to help attract some more attention to the site.
I think there was a screenshot section like 1.5 years ago (I saw a fluxbox screenshot I really liked ), but im not sure where thats gone,  think it was art.archlinux.org, but that has since died.
A range of screenshots would demonstrate Arch's flexibility and userbase, aswell as community and offical wallpapers.
Just my $0.02, what you reckon?

I see excatly where you are coming from, but Im talking about drawing more attention to arch, mainly through the people who troll distrowatch/linux sites all day, when new users are doing resarch they look at pcitures and what is possible not features, so im simply suggesting a page that shows what is possible with arch linux. Maybe a few diffrent images, updated each month from sevral shots from the Screenshot thread (chosen by whoever updates the site).
I've been thinking about like minded thoughts lately, and I think this is a good place to let them go.
1st. I understand the so called need for screenshots.
2nd. I understand it's not really arch, when were talking about screenshots.
What I actually was _just_ thinking about, say 30 minutes ago, were the wiki pages and the step by step tutorials the wiki provides. Now wouldn't it be nice to have a cool looking desktop screenshot and then have a wiki to walk you through the installation of all the cool stuff you'd need for such a thing? I think, that would not only be a learning experience with pacman, but also a true guided tour for someone "from the ground up" with linux. A learning experience with the basics of what happens when you boot up the machine and end up in that vc/1 wondering "Whattaaa???".. and then beyond 'till one finds him/herself staring at the desktop _picture_ s/he saw a couple days back..
Aghh.. I hate when this happens, my fingers are not keeping up with my head!!
Now this would (in my head atleast) mean a few basic "arch setups" (one "arch setup" per each of the most used dm's, kde, gnome, xfce?) which would have an "official" screenshots in arch's site, and if someone would like one of them pictures, there'd be a tutorial how to achieve it. And once these so called official screenshots had been introduced, it'd mean basically almost any of us with the same dm could help in a way or another the new archer to achieve her/his goal, (..I think xorg.conf would propably be the first squared tire) and then the fresh archer could _instantly_ help the next one with like minded problems.
I can of course speak for myself only, but the easiest way for me to learn is by doing things. This is one of the main reasons I'm still sticking with arch, I love it when you have to add stuff manually to a file to make things happen automatically from now on. Not just ..install ..and ....done ...and.. wtf?! why am I running out of memory ?!..
I got fed up tweaking msconfig and the registry after every install I made, so I jumped

  • New Look for the HP Support Forum - FAQ

    Welcome to the HP Community!
You may notice that we have changed our look.
We designed the new layout to make it easier for people to find what they are looking for.
While the look of the community has changed, the foundation of the community has not. All of the features you liked are still here.
Here are some of the highlights:
The community pages are less complex and easier to navigate
Buttons are now easier to find because they are brightly colored.
A new modular approach gives us greater freedom to launch improvements more quickly.
Below is a guide that walks you through the new design. We would love to have your feedback.
Where is information for new users located?
Information for new users can be found by expanding the “Quick Links” menu on the right-hand side of any community page.  Once this menu is expanded, links such as Community FAQ, 1st Time Here, Rules of Participation, and more are listed.
You may also navigate directly to the “Welcome!” area by following this link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/First-Time-Here-Learn-How-to/bd-p/Hello
How do I search the community for an answer to my issue?
To search the community, navigate to the search box on the top-right of any community page.  Here you may type in some keywords or a question and click the Go button to see your search results.
On the search results page, you will also be able to select from more advanced options such as narrowing results by location, by author, by accepted solution, and more.
    What happened to my settings?
Click the More Resources drop down menu on the right-hand side of any community page.  Once this menu is expanded, click User Settings to access your personal settings.
In this area you can set a signature to use in the community which will be automatically applied to all of your posts, change your avatar, and more.
How do I see my profile?
To access your profile, please click the Quick Links drop down menu on the right-hand side of any community page.  Once this menu is expanded, click the Profile link.  Alternately, you may also click your username in the top-right My Community area of any community page to access your profile.
    What is the Community Alert?
Occasionally we have some important information about the community to share with all of our community members.
Whenever we have important information to convey, the orange Community Alert link will become visible to all users at the top of every community page.  Please click this link when it’s available to read our update.
How do I upload a picture to the HP Consumer Support Community?
To upload a picture to the community, navigate to the Upload menu on the right-hand side of any community page and select Image Gallery:
On the Image Upload page, you can click the Browse button to choose a file to upload.
Where can I find my Private Messages?
Your private messages can be accessed by clicking the envelope icon in the My Community area to the right of any community page.
Alternately, you can select the “Messages” options in the Quick Links menu on the right side of any community page.
What happened to the “Send this user a private message” link?  I can’t find it.
To send a user a private message, navigate to the right-hand side of the user’s profile.  The “Send this user a private message” link is located in the Contact area below the My Community section.
You will also find options to add a community member to your list of friends, or ignore a community member in the Contact area of their profile.
What happened to the Best of the Community blog?
The Best of the Community blog can be accessed by clicking the Blogs dropdown at the top of any community page:
Where to I find the Top Contributors and Top Kudos posts now?
You can find the community’s Top Contributors, Top Kudos posts, and more in the Discussion Boards in the area at the bottom of the community homepage.
To see the Top Contributors or Top Kudos Posts for a specific category, navigate the bottom of any category page after selecting a category link on the community homepage.
How do I find my Subscriptions & Bookmarks?
You can navigate to your subscriptions and bookmarks by clicking the More Resources dropdown box on the right side of any community page and selecting My Subscriptions.
Doing so will take you to the Subscriptions & Bookmarks area of your User Settings.
What is the Me Too button?
The “Me Too” button is a way for you to let us know that you’re experiencing the same issue as another community member.  If you are experiencing an issue identical to the one you see described in a post by another user, click the Me Too button to let us know!

    Hi,
    Try the following
First of all, see if you can uninstall your current version of HP Support Assistant by using the Microsoft 'Fixit' on the following link - this is particularly useful in correcting issues that may prevent reinstallation on machines running a 64bit OS.
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
If this completes, restart the PC.
Next download and install the latest version of HP Support Assistant from the page on the link below - the download links are towards the bottom of the page.
    http://h18021.www1.hp.com/helpandsupport/hp-support-assistant.html
After the installation, restart the PC again.

  • New look for site; please comment

    Hi there.
    My question concerns (new look)
    http://www.sincro.co.za/new-test.php
    and
    http://www.sincro.co.za
I have changed the background from white to gray and also
    changed the
    colour of the text.
My wife says the new look is very dull. Ignore the menu and
    other graphics,
but just teel me what you think about the general look &
    feel. You are
    welcome to make suggestions.
    Regards,
    Deon

    Hello there,
Now, I know it's not always easy accepting peoples feedback
but the thing you must remember is that there must be a reason for
saying it - it's also a lot to personal preference.
Personaly, I wouldn't use the grey, stick with bold colors,
for example, black or white. The menu doesn't really go with any
other colors on the page - try to stick with different shades of
the same color or perhaps similar colors. One thing which I really
am not very convinced with is the gradients in the menu (when
open), they make it look very amaturish. Also, try to combine the
three images at the top of the page.
I'd be more than willing to help you in whatever way (graphic
    editing, etc).
    All the best,
    Kristopher (UK).

  • New Look For the HP Support Forum!

On December 1st, we will launch a new layout for the community. The new layout will not change the underlying functionality of the community. All of the boards and features that you use will remain unchanged. The new layout was specifically created to incorporate community feedback about the navigation and display.
Here are some of the highlights:
The community pages are less complex and easier to navigate
Buttons are now easier to find because they are brightly colored.
A new modular approach gives us greater freedom to launch improvements more quickly.
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the updated community pages.
New, expandable category menus reduce home page clutter and give us more room to add information to assist and showcase the members of the HP Consumer Support community:
The Best of the Community blog is now located in an expandable menu the top of every community page:
Here is an FAQ thread that will guide you through many actions that have been slightly tweaked; processes like editing your user information and uploading images has been simplified.
There will also be a Temporary Feedback board created for you to post feedback about the layout. The layout change is the first step in an ongoing process to improve the community. We hope you enjoy the new layout and encourage your feedback.

  • [Solved] Looking for arch's original man page color codes

Hey everyone. I'm new to arch, and enjoying having everything begin to work out for me. One thing I was wondering though is what the color codes are that the man pages use before X is loaded or anything similar.
Per the archwiki, I'm using the following to provide myself with colored man pages in urxvt:
    From .Xresources:
! colored man pages on rxvt-unicode-256color
    URxvt.colorIT: #87af5f
    URxvt.colorBD: #d7d7d7
    URxvt.colorUL: #87afd7
This works, but it's not the same colorscheme as what arch starts out with initially. Anyone know what that colorscheme is? Or where I could look to find it?

ayekat, thanks for the warm welcome!
ayekat wrote:What article in the wiki?
Here's the section in the Wiki I was referring to:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ma … vt-unicode
karol wrote:Are you talking about using man pages before installing Arch or after installing but in the tty? Do you want to get the same colors in X?
(I think) I was talking about the colors that the man pages are in the TTY. Specifically, my processes is:
    Boot up arch
    Login (X yet not started)
Look at a man page - like the colors
Startx - boot to window manager (i3)
Look at a man page - want to change the colors
That said, I liked the colors the man pages had before installing Arch quite a bit, and wouldn't object to learning what those are.
ayekat wrote:Here you are changing how urxvt displays characters that are marked as underline, italic or bold; in particular you are changing their colours.
The thing is, it won't only affect man pages viewed in urxvt, but everything.
    Makes sense

    http://misc.flogisoft.com/bash/tip_colo … ng#colors2
And it looks like it covers what I need to know.
    Thanks for your help!
And honestly, at this point I think I can figure out what colorscheme I like given the info at hand. So I think we can call this one taken care of.
If it interests anyone, I found a .sh script at the above link to display all 256 colors, then modified it to show the colors bolded, italicized etc. Here's the script:

When I go on to some websites and click on certain things it wants to open a new window to display the information etc.
I.E. On an agency job search site I click to do a detailed job search which should open in a new window, but this will not happen now on my Firefox.
Firefox was working perfectly ok on Saturday 11th September but for some unknown reason has acted up since Sunday.
There have been no Windows updates which could effect this and the laptop is otherwise working perfectly ok.
Nothing has changed from Saturday Night to Sunday Night that I can see.
I have even tried to do a system restore to solve the problem but with no success.

I also have this problem. I cannot open links from a discussion board I frequent nor can I open links from my email. Also after opening my email, I cannot go to any other sites except my home page. I can then go no where else.
When I close Firefox and try to reopen it, it does nothing! I have to bring up the Task Manager and end the Firefox process before I can get back in.
To the best of my knowledge, this problem started with the new update to Ver. 3.6.9. I am running Windows XP Media Center 2005
