New Mac Book Pro... No DVD Drive... Really?

I know there are 50 excuses to leave it out, but a laptop top of this caliber lacking a blu-ray drive is bad enough but lacking a dvd drive all together is ridicoulous.

OzziesMAC, if you already have an external BD Drive then there is no need for a SuperDrive.
Unfortunately, there are pros and cons to having an internal drive. I think this is a natural progression. Just look at Floppy drives of yesteryear. If you can recall that far back, there was outrage when the floppy disk went away but look to today, we survived and we've changed our process and it has worked for the best.
If you NEED a drive, use an external SuperDrive, or better yet buy an external BluRay drive and you've satisfied two requirements, a drive to burn and ability to watch BluRay.
If you have clients that require video, why not export a high-res 1080p video onto 16-64GB USB drive and deliver it to them. Not only will they have higher quality video but they can burn their own discs afterward. You still have the option of giving them an .iso on usb flash.
Ok maybe you really need to give clients a "final" product on disc. Then why gripe about carrying around a small external SuperDrive when you're already accepting of the fact that you are going to carry around a spindle of DVD-Rs? By the way, upgraded MBP 13" & 15" did not go away.
Most media professionals will likely be carrying this with them on site and attaching it to a Thunderbolt NAS and editing in the field for dailies or quick turn around projects. This is the protable MacPro for professionals.
I will agree with one thing on the need for a drive however, that is when I purchase BluRay with digital copy, half the time I'm required to place the disc into my drive in order to obtain the copy, even from iTunes. But I think that is a business process that needs to change.
Did I mention that they upgraded the MBP 13" and 15" lines without retina? If you need an upgrade with the same requirements you had for a machine you're replacing Apple offers it still. If you requirements do not include retina display that is.

Buy an external USB hard drive and copy your data to it.  Either that or burn them all to single or double layer DVDs (depending on amount of data you have).  Or if it's really a small amount, consider putting it all on a USB memory stick.

  • How can i create dvds on my new mac book pro

I just purchased a new mac book pro retina and cant create dvds?

Apple decision to remove iDVD will deter me from recommending Mac to fellow Windows users.
Many other Mac users feel the same way.

Now that my newly bought Mac does not provided a avenue for me to burnt DVDs, I am
    really disappointed.
If you are still within your 15 day return period.  Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes.)
Nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

Is there a cd/dvd slot on the new Mac Book Pro?

...but the NON-Retina models DO have optical drives. You can also buy an external optical drive from Apple (or other vendors).

  • HT1751 How do I move my entire iTunes library from my iomega hard drive to my new Mac Book Pro?  I no longer want to keep my music on the external drive.

Because of a lack of enough memory on my old Mac Book, I put all my music on an external hard drive.  Now that I have a new Mac Book Pro with lots of memory, I want to move the music onto this new computer but I haven't been able to yet.  I tried the migration assistant but that didn't work.  Any suggestions?

I may sound like a real rookie here, but on my new MacBook Air there isn't a "Pictures" folder under "Users/kendallwilson" like there used to be on my old MacBook Pro (Early 2011). I'm still working out the new software on my MB Air, so where exactly should I open this new window to start following the steps you just provided me.
    Thanks again!

  • How to install Elements8 (on disc) on new Mac Book Pro with no disc drive?

How can I install Elements 8 (on disc) on my new Mac Book Pro with no disch drive?

Copy the contents of the Elements 8 in a pen drive(from a Mac that has the capability) and then copy the contents to your disk(on the new machine i.e. Mac book Pro) and run the installer. If this is not possible you can download the installer directly from here.

TVs don't support "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", so you will probably have to use FAT32. To format the external drive, follow the same steps as you did to format it with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but in the erasing screen, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". Note that FAT32 isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB. Also, you may have to format the external drive in a PC

MY new Mac book pro will not save any of teh bookmarks I make in safari. If I make a bookmark, it will not appear until I close safari and reopen it. Then, if I shut my computer down and reopen safari, all of the bookmarks are gone. This has happend multiple times and I don't know what is going on. I would really like to use my bookmarks.

  • HT4927 I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing

I have just downloaded iPhoto from the app store. The photo library from my old laptop was backed up on an external hard drive and I retrieved the photos from there.  Now when I open the photos on my new Mac Book Pro, they are small - am I missing something?
I am using 10.8.2 Mountain Lion btw

I dragged the Photo library icon from the backup drive on to iPhoto on the laptop
That means you imported one Library to another.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
So the reason you're seeing small photos is because you're seeing the iPhoto thumbnails from the back up library.
    So, what to do?
Do you still have the back up? If so, trash this bunged up library and restore from the back up again. HOw to restore will depend entirely on how you made the back up, but no version of restoring includes importing the library.

  • My new Mac Book Pro came with someone elses CD in already in the Drive

Just received my new Mac Book Pro just yesterday.
I purchased it online via the apple store.
When I was playing around with it just before, I tried inserting an installation disk for Office Mac when I realised the CD wouldn't go into the drive.
After a while I realise a CD was already in there - it was someone elses scratched up blank CD with a bunch of Asian songs on it.
How does this happen?? Makes me wonder if i've been given some second hand computer!!
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do or maybe this has happened before to someone??

    "MADE IN CHINA"
But what isn't these days. My Mac Pro 3,1 was constructed in Cupertino, but it cost 19k. I guess Apple thought they should put that one together, for some reason.
However, that being said, if you did get a Mac made in USA now... you might have found a Sex Pistols cd in the tray... LOLOL...

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

  • Brand new mac book pro very slow

I just purchased a brand new mac book pro 13" with and i5 processor, 2.3ghz, 4 gb ram, running osX Lion. I bought it to replace my 2008 mac book pro that had a failing hard drive and a bad logic board. So i bought this new mac book 2 days ago, set it up and everything was great until i went to surf the net. My internet is so slow, webpages take ages to load about 5 minutes or more, same with videos (like on youtube). So I tried my old mac book and the internet was running great on that one, same with my roomates old macbook, my boyfriends pc and numerous other devices connected to my wifi (a nook, a tablet, and an iphone). So i checked my network settings everything was good, its was functioning fine according to network diagnostics. After googling this I switched my dns to googles public dns which made no difference either. When plugged directly into the router via ethernet the internet surfs like a champ. If the wireless internet preforms like this my new macbook is somewhat useless to me .Help! What could be the problem? Or did apple just really screw up the airport on these new macs? My old mac was a beast speed wise, i firgure the new mac should put the older ones to shame. What gives?

I suggest use the ethernet cable. They're much faster to transfer. You only need to connect your imac and mbpr directly to each other using the cable.  There is no need for the wifi if you connect the ethernet cable.

Not if you have a slow internet connection. While I was on DSL it took me over 3 hours to reinstall.
Oh yeah, forgot about that, I would choose to get a faster internet connection before  I got a new computer so I rarely think that way, thanks.
Well honestly my internet was fast enough for me unit I got a MBP that you had to use the internet to reinstall the OS. Because it didn't come with a $.32 DVD disc.
I have a 50mbps connection, kinda skews my viewpoint regarding internet speed.

Buy an external optical drive such as the Apple USB SuperDrive that is made specifically for that model.
Use the optical drive of your old MBP to clone the DVDs to USB flash drives, then install from the flash drives.
Connect both computers to your local network and then share the optical drive to install the software.
