New Mac convert...

I finally made the jump to Mac yesterday, and it was a very expensive jump, but I am so glad I did. Lightroom really does run better on my new MacBook Pro than it did on my HP Pavillion. I admit that I was having a lot of problems with the PC and Lr is not the only reason I changed by any means.
I was also one of the people who just could not get a good print from Lr with all the prints being too dark and muddy. Using the same printer I for some reason have more profile options than I had on PC and now I get great prints.
I'm a believer!

Yeah, Mac is great that way. Just messing with ya. Don't want to start an OS war.
However, if a place servers Pepsi, I always order a 7Up. Not nice when you ask for a Coke and they serve you Pepsi without telling you it aint the 'Real Thing' in advance.
THe odd ball thing was on my recent Holiday to Montreal many places served Pepsi, but mixed the brands and had Sprite instead of 7Up. Strange.
Actually Sprite is my second favorite. I do Shandies of Sprite with Welch's Red Grape Juice. It is my summer cooler of choice. (Not much of a beer drinker).

  • New Mac convert- iMac G5 Problem

I converted over to Mac just two months ago. I purchased an iMac G5 20" with 1gb ram and final cut express hd preinstalled from the factory. About a week ago after waking my iMac from sleep mode the computer froze. When I restarted it, it would not move from the gray screen with the spining wheel. I took it to the Genius bar and the guy there was able to fix the OS with disk warrior and then do an archive and install. He said that it should work ok, but that there was a chance it could freeze up again, not sure why though.
So after taking it home for one day the computer once again locked up at the startup. So I decided that since I have backed up my music files, i would do a erase and install and take it back to factory specs.
Heres the new problem. My iMac takes much much longer to boot up, sometimes 5 to 8 minutes. When I to to system preferrences and click on the .Mac icon my computer locks up and show the mulitcolor pinwheel cursor. It also does this on the iPod opitons when I click on the contacts and calendars sections. And at times safari and/or iTunes takes awhile to start up. Can anyone help?

I'd do a PRAM reset. Here's the instructions.

If that doesn't do it reset the PMU. Here's some more instructions.

  • Import Confusion-New Mac Convert

I have both iPhoto and Aperture (trial) loaded on my system. All of my photos (from my PC days) are on an external HD now connected to my Mac. I'm very confused about the import and storage process. Technically, all my photos are already stored, yet when I 'import' them into iPhoto as 'events' it appears they are being restored somewhere else- maybe just my own paranoia, but it's taking longer than I'd expect to just be storing thumbnails. Next issue, when I connect my camera, photos start to load into both iPhoto AND Aperture.
I'd like to keep my photos 'stored' on my external hard drive, not my internal mac drive. How do I control this in a way that isn't discouraging? In the PC world I considered myself an expert and things were very controllable and logical. Help! Thanks.

    psurgery
I considered myself an expert and things were very controllable and logical.
As they are on the Mac. And if you want to replicate the system you used on the PC then do that. A simple, logical system of folders in the File System (the Finder) will be something that any expert can understand
If, however, you want to use iPhoto (or Aperture) then you need to realise that these are not FILE organisers but PHOTO organisers. It's a key difference and the first one you need to grasp to make sense of the Applications.
The advantage of either application is simple: it offers vastly more organising, categorising and searching power than folders in the Finder. They integrate throughout the Operating System. They do other stuff too. I'll talk about iPhoto here, though anything iPhoto does Aperture does - and then a whole lot more.
By default, iPhoto copies the files to the iPhoto Library on import. It wants to manage the FILES so you can manage the PHOTOS. The idea is that you focus on the iPhoto Window and do all your work there - create Albums, Smart Albums, keywords and so forth.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, that can be easily done from the iPhoto Window.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Aperture has more robust tools for working with managed files than iPhoto.
Remember, you've changed OS, there's a learning curve and it takes a little time.
btw: The photos are not imported into either application unless you expressly tell the apps to import.
    Regards
    TD

  • New mac user problems

So I'm a new mac convert - purchased my first macbook this summer - loved it... till recently. Basic setup, just using Parallels5 to run Win7 from bootcamp partition- everything fine. Then recently I noticed major slow down on bootup/shutdown, hanging on a blank blue screen at startup, not shutting down/restarting (get a message that I have to force it manually) and recently, the keyboard is unresponsive at login (seems to return after coming out of sleep). I thought that maybe it was software as I had updated to Parallels6, so I tried uninstalling it - no fix. Tried reinstalling/repairing the OS - no fix. So like any former Windows user, I figured I should wipe and start over. Booted from Mac OS startup DVD - took forever to load and also hung on a blue screen, but eventually was able to use Disk Utility to erase/format the Mac partition. I should mention that I ran the usual disk and hardware checks first and no problems were found. Then I tried reinstalling OSX6.3 - took about 40 minutes. However, when finished it gave me some installation failure message, asked me to restart and try again. I happened to restart without the DVD just to see and after a while it eventually booted OS, but again keyboard was unresponsive.
So I've very perplexed! Now it seems like it might be a hardware issue? Maybe a firmware problem? Anybody out there that could help - I'd be grateful.

One odd thing though is that the keyboard works fine at initial startup to choose to boot from the Win7 bootcamp partition. Once loaded, Win7 also works just fine - no errors or anything. Only with the "Mac side" does it seem to have an issue - mind you I haven't tried booting Win7 multiple times to be sure.

  • Installing an AirPort Extreme Card in a new Mac Pro 3

I am a brand new Mac convert. I just purchased a new Mac Pro 3.QX and have to install an Airport Extreme Card. I'll be damned if I can find out where it should be installed...

Ok, so this is pretty hard to explain without pictures but lets go through it step by step.
Before you ever handle the inside of your computer first make sure the computer is off and has had sufficient time to cool off. Also make sure that you have already discharged any static from your body. In addition make sure all cords are unplugged from the computer and you use all proper safety equipment.
-Lay the computer on it's side and take off the side panel.
-Connect the airport antenna wires to the antenna connectors on the card. (Make sure you connect the wires labeled "1" and "3", the other should be taped to the side.)
-Insert the card into the connector on the logic board at a slightly upward angle and then when it's in, lower the screw end of the card down.
-Install the two airport extreme card screws, replace the side of your computer, and you're done.

  • I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions? Thanks

I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

Make sure you get a name--brand one. I purchased some el cheapo, no-name ones and they did not work

  • I have a new Mac.  I installed my Bridge CS4 that I ran on my old mac.  When I import RAW photos from my Nikon d90 they come in with an .NEF extension.  I need to install a converter but cannot find one.

I have a new mac.  I installed my Bridge CS4 and Photoshop CS4 that I ran on my old mac.  When I import RAW pics from my Nikon D90 they come in with the extension of .NEF.  Apparently this is not a readable form for Bridge as the picture does not appear.  I believe I need a converter to convert .NEF to .dng but I can't find one.  Any ideas?

You do not need to convert to DNG.
The NEFs from your camera model have been supported since ACR 4.6 and 5.1.
What you need to do is update your ACR plug-in to version 5.7, the latest and last version for CS4.  Right now, you are probably on ACR 5.0, the version supplied with the original release of Photoshop CS4.
Be aware that the Adobe updater is extremely unreliable when it comes to CS5, so that you must do the update manually.  There are detailed instructions on the ACR 5.7 plug-in download page.  You MUST follow those instructions to the letter.

would like to convert my LPs to digital on my new mac book pro with retinal display
. How can i do this?

The new Mac's do not have analog audio in so you will have to go with a USB audio in device or else if you do not yet own a turntable (or are looking to upgrade) you could get a turntable that has USB out.
The Griffin Technology iMic USB Audio Device is a low cost consumer grade solution if you already have a turntable.
For recording I use Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder which does a good job and has the ability to run the audio signal through various filters.

  • New mac pro slow converting raw files any help?

    hallo everybody,
    can someone help?
my new mac pro 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 / 32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 is converting raw files in camera raw really too slowly, about twice the time took with an iMac 2,7 GHz.
I tryed all graphic processor options on PS preferences.
I also ran mac check up utility and hardware seems ok.

The normal suspect would be that you haven't rendered out the previews, but the low cpu value would indicate that the problem actually lies elsewhere. Even so, it would do no harm to run the Render Standard-sized preview command (Library module View menu)
Next thought is the operating mode. Lightroom 2.x can run as either a 32-bit or 64-bit application. With the amount of ram you have installed (very low for a box with this sort of power) you might find 32-bit is the best choice. You can change the mode by clicking on the Lightroom application icon then use the Get Info command (Cmd+I) to open the info panel
Tip: you would be well advised to increase your installed ram. Lr likes plenty of ram, especially in 64-bit mode. A good starting point would be 6GB or even 8GB

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I'm a new mac user-- how do i convert files?

I am so new at this mac thing. i love the MBP so far but i had a pc before and i wanted to get some files on my new mac but i need to convert them so that they open using my mac. the files are just some word files and some pics and some music.. thanks for any input in advance.

First of all, welcome to the bright side! ; )
Seriously, I am sure you will enjoy your new Mac experience.
About the files. Word documents can be open without any conversion using Word for Mac. The compatibility is close to 100%. You can also see some of those documents using the included TextEdit application that came included in the operating system. Pages also manages Word documents.
When you talk about music, what kind of files are you using? For MP3 you can use iTunes, no conversion needed. For WMA, you can first convert them to AAC in iTunes for PC and then import them to your library in the Mac. You can also download the Windows Media Player for Mac from www.mactopia.com to listen to your WMA using that player, but I would strongly recommend to use iTunes since that application works with the rest of the iLife suite (iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, iWeb and Garageband).
For pics, move your pictures to a folder and then import them or just drag and drop that folder in the iPhoto window. All the files require no conversion at all.
    Again, welcome!
    Gus

  • Old iMac numbers 08, new Mac Book pro won't let me open numbers without converting to Numbers 09

I bought a new Mac Book Pro and when moving my Numbers and Pages files to the new computer it will not allow me to open the files until I update them to Numbers 09 first.  On my iMac I was running Numbers 08.  Any suggestions how to tackle this issue?
    Thanks,

    Hi onnygirl,
Numbers 3 will not open Numbers '08 documents.
On your iMac, open and then export your Numbers '08 documents to Excel.
Transfer the Excel documents to your MacBook and they will open in Numbers 3.
Numbers is not an Excel clone, so there will be some glitches .
    Regards,
    Ian.

  • New Mac Mini and Analog TV

I just bought a new March 2009 Mac Mini. I am trying to hook it up to and old analog TV. The TV has SVIDEO and RCA jacks. I purchased the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter only to find out it will not work with the new model. It seems the new model only outputs DVI-D and not DVI-I.
I am trying to hook up the mini-dvi to SVIDEO on the back of my TV and then for the audio connect them to the TV with RCA jacks. Is there any way to get the new mac mini to work with an analog TV?
    Thanks

When you cite "VGA converter to RCA" do you mean a little box that actually converts the signal down to RCA/composite, like this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2
or simply an adaptor like this one:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040113&pid=2509&seq=1&format=2
The crucial thing I'm waiting to find out is whether the new Minis provide ANY analog video signal to either of the video ports at all (which would seem to be the case, since VGA is analog, right?), or if the analog roadblock is simply caused by the currently available adaptors.

  • New Mac Mini output to S-Video

I'm trying to output to S-Video using a new Mac Mini (2010).
If I use a Mini Display to DVI adapter and then the DVI to S-Video, will that work?
    Mini Display to DVI: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A
    DVI to S-Video: http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9267G/A
Looks like it'll "work", but will it "WORK"?
    Thanks

Adapters won't work. MDP to DVI is digital only and S-Video needs 480i (analog).
You would need an expensive converter like http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=5280
