New Mac - Does Migration Assistant Step On New iLife?

Greetings!
I'm fortunate to take delivery of a new iMac this afternoon. I plan on using the Migration Assistant to migrate from my old iMac. I have iLife '09, and was wondering if during the migration process if selecting Applications will overwrite the new iLife with the old?
Thanks much,
bE

Hi TD;
I just used MA and it didn't overwrite anything that was newer on the destination machine with the older versions on the source machine. So not to worry, MA is smart enough to keep the latest and greatest.

Look for them on your old computer, when found copy the files to a USB drive and move them to the new computer.

  • Does Migration Assistant Have "Drive Options"?

We're planning on acquiring a new iMac this upcoming week, one the has both the 256 GB SSD and the 2 TB HD.
We want to use Migration Assistant in association with our current iMac which only has a 1 TB drive.
Question: does Migration Assistant offer the user choices of where the files from the old iMac are migrated to on the new iMac?
More specifically, we want to put the applications on the 256 GB SSD and all other files on the 2 TB internal HD.
Will Migration Assistant allows us to do this?

  • Does migration assistant move files or copy them?

I'm running Yosemite on a separate partition. I want to copy some of my information from 10.6.8, but I want to leave 10.6.8 intact, as it is still (and will remain for quite some time) my primary operating system. Does migration assistant move the information, or copy it?

It will copy info and won't delete anything from the originating drive. If you are just looking to copy some files, log back into the 10.6.8 and copy them to the user desktop account of the other drive.
If you are looking to migrate a user account, be aware that the account name will need to be different than the one you are currently using in Yosemite.

  • Does Migration Assistant copies all iTunes/iPhoto data to the new Mac?

I currently placed all my iphoto and itunes data on an external harddrive in my current setup. I have a MacMini 2010. Im planning to upgrade its HARDDRIVE with a smaller capacity but faster SSD.
So here goes my question... (the fact is, i haven't tried Migration Assistant ever, hence these troubling questions..)
I would keep my old harddrive intact as it used to be. I would install the SSD on the MacMini and do a clean install of OSX Lion which is also the current version of my OS in the old HARDDRIVE. I'm planning to attach the OLD HARDDRIVE using an HD enclosure and connect it using USB/Firewire externally. If i use, Migration Assistant to copy my settings and files in the OLD HARDDRIVE, will it also copy all my itunes/iphoto data into the new SSD? (music and photo data that are stored in an EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE right now) - meaning itunes and iphoto data folders are in an external hard drive.
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit. Im hoping itunes and iphoto would just LINK all those files as it used to be on my EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE and NOT COPY it to my small capacity SSD.
Do you get it? Please ask me if you don't. I just want to make sure a smooth transition to the new SSD if i push thru.

You can restore your iPod to "New" which will erase every thing and install fresh iOS software or you can restore to a particular backup that you have previously created. In this case, your iPod Apps & data will appear as per the backup. Note that some content is not in a backup and will need to be synced back to the iPad from the iTunes music library or from, for example, the iPhoto photo library.

  • HT4889 Am I wrong or does Migration Assistant not work in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) when migrating from a PowerPC running Tiger (10.4.11)? Apple really needs to get on the ball or face losing people buying their new desktop products.

The title alone speaks to my frustration about this issue.
Used the process that was recommended by Apple to migrate from my "Lampshade" iMac (PPC running 10.4.11) to the new iMac (Intel running 10.8.2) and I got bupkiss...
Just a spinning wheel (not beachball) and no drive recognized using Migration Assistant for both nor when using Target Mode on the iMac running 10.4.11 and Migration Assistant on the iMac running 10.8.2. Which is ironic, or more accurately oxymoronic, since the iMac in Target Mode (10.4.11) is recognized on the desktop of the iMac running 10.8.2 but not in the Migration Assistant. And before you can misdiagnose..it is not the Thunderbolt connection since I have the Apple recommended Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter and also used the Firewire 400 to 800 cable to expedite the transfer.
    On a personal note...
I'm not bashing Apple for this...they are "head and shoulders" above the competition in what they do but I've been burned a few times so I feel I can share a small bit of loyal customer advice...I understand your iOS and mobile products hold huge sway in company focus and market-share but I find it a tad unwise to slack on the desktop applications. I don't recall any app for the iPhone/iPad family being made on the iPhone/iPad...only from desktop applications if I recall correctly. And how can I clearly "Move my Mac even further ahead"  as your marketing states when I can't even migrate my files from my old Mac to my new one in a simple fashion as per your instructions?
I thank anyone in advance with an answer or even a workaround for this issue and please have a great day.

Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger to OS X Lion
Migration from Mac OS X v10.4 computers to OS X Lion over your Wi-Fi or a wired network is not supported. However, if both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port, you can use Target Disk Mode to transfer your data:
Verify that both Macs are equipped with a FireWire port. Note that different model Macs may have different FireWire connectors, which will require an appropriate cable, such as FireWire 400 to FireWire 800.
On the Mac you want to transfer data from, Restart, and immediately hold the T key.
Wait for the FireWire logo to appear on the screen.  If it does not, restart and try again.
Connect both Macs via the FireWire cable.
On the Mac you want to transfer data to, Open the Migration Assistant application.
Select the option "From another Mac, PC, Time Machine backup, or other disk" and click Continue.
Select the option "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" and click Continue.
Select your other Mac's volume, such as "Macintosh HD", from the list, and click Cont
EDIT: Actually I realize you did follow these directions and if your drive is seen on the new Mac it should work. You're entitled to free Apple support with the new purchase, I'd give them a call.

  • Will windows os under parallels migrate to new mac using migration assistant

I have been using parallels 7 with windows 7 on a 2008 macbook pro. I have gotten a new 2012 macbook pro and plan to use migration assistant. Will windows install without my having to call Microsoft? I also have Office 2010 and wonder if I need to call Microsoft to allow me to use it on the new MacBook?
I have made a clone of my older computer. I have done Time Machine also

Migration Assistant only migrates - it does not delete anything from the 'other' machine.
    Good luck,

  • Does Migration Assistant move native apps like App Store, iTunes etc to a new MBP?

I want to replace my current 2010 13" MBP running Lion with a new 13" MBP 2.9 GHz (not Retina) running either Lion or Mountain Lion.  I want to make sure that Migration Assistant does not move the (recently) very buggy native apps on my current machine (App Store, iTunes, iPhoto) to the new machine.

  • New Mac Mini - Migration Assistant Problems, New Mac Mini - Migration Assistant Problems

Ok. So this is the scenario.
I have just bought a brand new Mac Mini and have jut disposed of a MacBook I had since late 2007.
I had been using time machine on the MB and thought this the best way to carry over the photos, music and everything else.
So. I did the last time machine back up prior to the sale and have just booted up the Mini. Admittedly I did skip the 'Transfer Files' box when setting up as I just wanted to get the MM up and running and then use Migration Assistant to bring the files over. After getting going I got MA open and clicked off the applications as I had only a dew from the Mac App Store and knew I could get back from the store afterwards.
So here's the situation. It did draw over the two accounts, mine and my fiancées. The folders which were on my desktop on the MB were just as they were. Claire's account shows too.
    But.
The external WD drive I used for my TM back ups is showing on the desktop as a normal yellow drive, not a green TM. I opened About This Mac and instead of seeing the 105gb that was my account before, it's only showing as a minimal 10 or so. I opened iPhoto and it told me that the current library needs updating.
I will do this if this is what I need to do, but am unsure due to the message saying once it's down it cannot be undone.
    So my Qs.
    Have I messed up somewhere?
Do I just need to update the iPhoto library and then the photos will show?
If I go into TM and tell the mac to use the drive, it will then do a back up but can I then open TM and go back in time to when I was backing up files from the MacBook?
I don't really want to restore the whole drive, but wanted some advice. I've read down thing about 'inheriting' old TM backups, is this roughly what I've been explaining?
    Thanks all!

It seems that every major release of OS X brings changes to the iPhoto Library. Update the library and your images should show up. Your external drive is not showing with a TM icon because you have not designated it as the TM drive in System Preferences > Time Machine. You should be able to inherit the old TM backups when you designate a TM drive.

  • Discrepancy between old/new mac using migration assistant

Replaced G4 Powerbook with new Macbook Pro. G4 was saying disk was full (80 Gb), Migration assistant showed it was copying only 41 Gb of contents. What did the other 39 Gb consist of? A mystery to me! Can this all be system files?

There are many things that are not copied by Migration Assistant such as swap and Trash.
Is it possible you have significant amounts of data in Trash?

  • Exactly what settings does migration assistant migrate?

I am using migration assistant to transfer information to a new mac. My question is this: At the "Select Items to Migrate" screen you have the options of selecting Users, Applications, Settings, etc... Under the Settings Section, you can select/deselect "Time Zone" "Machine" and "Network." Exactly what settings in the Mac OS is transfered when you select Machine and Network? I know Directory Binding settings and computer name is transfered when you check "Machine." What else does "Machine" transfer? What network related settings are imported when you select "Network?"

Hold everything. I found my answer here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11721764?messageID=11721764#11721764?messa geID=11721764
I used Google to search my terms and this one came up. It seems the search function on here is not as good as Google......as usual.

  • G5 iTunes to Mac Mini / Migration Assistant

I see suggestions indicating that the Migration Assistant is the way to go . The effort to back up the 72 G library has not been successful via Bombich cloning to a the new hard drive in the second slot .
My issue is resolved by this , I enjoy my ease of accessing the accumulation of data as I have organized it over these many years .
The over ten thousand audio files have been combed through once before to collate material by removing duplicates plus finding extensive missing and misplaced files into current values , or click and play . This took a dedicated effort of some few months of tedious file by file verification , of which the improvement of finding , selecting , removing , placing and replacing of errant files provided little enjoyment of that work , beyond the result .
I have tried many approaches of replacing , duplicating , the media folder . My understanding of the central filing apparatus has proven to be of little value as nothing has enabled me to open up a iTunes application on anything other than the "original" iTunes application in the G5 towers home folder resembling my preferred cataloguing .
I wish to make my entire 71 G file structure a candidate for the iCloud solution .
What is the key media file to organize the iTunes folder as it is found in the G5 Towers Home folder when transferring the iTunes Library to a new hard drive keeping the iTunes application in its familiar or G5 appearance .
Thanks in advance for patience in providing a slow person a trail of breadcrumbs .

I just bought a Mac Mini and have two years worth of Time Machine backups. Can I continue to use this drive
    Possibly.
will Lion create duplicate new backups of the files.
If you used Setup Assistant (preferred) or Migration Assistant to transfer from the G5's backups to the new Mini, you may get this prompt when the first backup starts:
See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.  If you do get the prompt, and select "inherit," TM will just do an incremental backup.   That will be fairly large, of course, for the new version of OSX and default Apple apps, plus whatever new apps you've installed.
However, in my testing, I was not able to get it to do that from Leopard backups.  I filed a Bug Report in June and have exchanged follow-ups with Apple but have no real answer yet, so can only assume it's supposed to work.  It may have been fixed in later versions of Lion.
the drive isnt big enought to have two full backups of both computers.
There wouldn't be a need for that;  at worst there'll be the existing G5 backups plus one new full backup of the Mini, not 4 full backups.  Besides, do you really need two years worth of backups?
Consider getting a new drive for the new Mac's backups.   You can still view and restore from the old backups, via the Browse... option, per #E2 in the Troubleshooting article.

  • Does Migration Assistant use the most recent time machine backup?

About to transfer my old macbook pro harddrive to my new imac..and when im in migration assistant it allows me to select ALL applications (not individual ones unfortuantely) to transfer from my time machine backup...curious, does it transfer all apps I have ever had on all my backups? - there is probably 20 different backups. I have cleared a ton of useless apps off my MBP and did a fresh backup hoping those would be the only ones to get transfered?
    Thanks

Only one version is transferred, the last saved one.
