New mac does not inherit old time machine backups

I used Setup Assistant to move files from my Time Machine backup to a new Mac.  However, when I started Time Machine on the new Mac, it started creating an entirely new backup rather than inheriting the old one.  Any help?

Because Time Machine said the Oldest Backup was "none" and the Newest Backup was "none".  Also, the initial backup size was far too big for any changes to files I might have made. I also checked the data folder on the Time Capsule, and a new backup file was being created.

  • New Computer doesn't read old time machine backups

I just purchased a new iMac and everything is great, but it didn't copy over my time machine indexing to my new computer so I have to go back through the old fashion way to fix the problem, which is to go into the hard drive and drag and drop. How can I re-index my Time Machine on my new computer? Thanks

  • Migration Assistant Does not see my Time Machine Backup disk

I have a TM backup disk connected via Firewire that I have several months of backup on. I did a clean install of SL. When I went to restore using Migration Assistant, the MI does not show the TM backup disk. The disk is mounted and visible through the finder. Time Machine itself sees the disk just fine. But when I run MI, the only drive it shows me is the one where the new SL is installed.
I found another post describing the same situation and the solution there said to make sure that the TM disk is formatted the same way, ie GUID. I check with Disk Utility and both the SL volume and the TM volume are formatted GUID.
    HELP!

sorry, i don't know what else it could be then. if you have another external drive you can try doing a full system restore from the TM backups onto that drive and see if MA will recognize that drive and migrate from it. other than this there is always manual migration. slow and tedious but it can be done. see this link for help with that

  • Getting new Mac to find Logic sounds Time Machine backup

    Hi folks,
I recently replaced my 2009 iMac with a brand new one.  I used Time Machine to bring my stuff over to the new machine and everything's rosy, apart from Logic, which is basically what I use the computer for.
I'm having trouble with some of Logic's instruments, which aren't appearing.  Just one example:
    "EXS24 instrument "Roland TR-606 Kit.exs" not found."
Yet if I go to Spotlight I can find that kit immediately.
So my question is - how can I get Logic to "find" those instruments so it doesn't come up with the error message?
    Thanks in advance
    Ben

    Hey there Ben4646,
It sounds like you have the loops stored on your hard drive yet you cannot use them in Logic. It seems like you may need to re index the loops, and depending on the version of your program the instructions are different so choose the correct article:

  • WiFi does not connect whilst Time Machine backup occurs at startup

This is a problem I've had since the beta test session and does not seem to have been fixed.
If I shut down the computer in the middle of a backup or a backup strats immediately on opening the lid of my computer (MBA late 2010), the WiFi does not connect. If I am patient, eventually the backup will terminate and I can then connect. My router is a Time Capsule, and all software is up to date.
I don't recall having this problem with Snow Leopard.

  • Accessing Old Time Machine Backup From a New Account

I have had problems with my old Account and decided to create a new Account. I can "see" the old Time Machine backup lists from the new Account, but can't open or restore them to the new Account. I get the message that I do not have sufficient privileges although I set the new Account up with Administrator privleges.

You should have used Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant, to transfer your data. I suggest you start over by booting into Recovery, erasing the startup volume, and installing OS X. When you reboot, Setup Assistant will start automatically. Follow the prompt to import data from a Time Machine snapshot. The backup history will then be inherited. The first backup will still be a full one; that can't be avoided.

Yes, it will do a full backup.
and if so, do I really need all the old backups on my smaller external drive?
Only if you want to be able to go back in time to those previous Time Machine backups.  When you plug in the new larger external drive, you will only be able to go back as far as the first day you plugged it in and ran the first Time Machine backup on it.

Transferring does not work, you need to install using installation files. Downloadable versions can be found at the following linked pages...

  • New install, old time machine backup?

I have a 2009 Mac Pro, original HD still inside, Mavericks installed. I just installed Yosemite on a new internal drive. The Mavs time machine backup is on a 3rd internal drive.
My question: how can I get the new Yosemite installation to utilize my estalbished Time Machine backup, and carry forward?
    thank you!
    ray

There is a way to force the backup history to be inherited, but I consider it too complicated for most users to carry out, and it won't do any good if you've already started using Time Machine with the new setup. If you're familiar with the shell and want to try it, search the tmutil(8) manual page for the terms "inheritbackup" and "associatedisk."
Otherwise I suggest you set the backup drive aside and stop using it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then erase it and start over. Meanwhile, start a new backup on another drive. You need more than one backup to be safe anyway.

  • Old Time Machine Backup

OK this is complex so hope u can bear with me...
I backed up my computer with Time Machine running lion, or maybe snow leapord.
Now I have a new computer and the old one is gone, and it's running Mountain Lion.
I'm just trying to get my old data back, but when I go to "browse other time machine backups" my old backup does not appear in the list.
I've taken this disk to other computers before and accessed my old TM backup, I dunno why it's not working now.
Migration Assistant I learned does work, however there are a few problems with that...
First: Migration assistant did not copy my old iWeb site domain file to my new computer, so I'm hoping its still in there somewhere, becuase iCloud deleted my mobile me site by now.
I also clicked every option therefore now I have two accounts. I DO NOT WANT TWO ACCOUNTS. I have now one with the old time machine backup restore, and one with the new computer account. I want one account, I don't want to have to relogin to have to check my old email box. Not only that the directories of one account are locked an not accessible by another... not good.
Finnaly Time Machine just popped-up a window asking if I should "integrate" old time machine backups into this computer backup, saying that if I did this the old computer would not be synced with this new time machine backup. Since I don't have the old comptuter that should be fine. However I'm still hoping to find my old website on that disk somewhere, perhaps in a earlier version of the TM backup.
If I do this "integration" will I be able to now browse my old time machine disk as I was able to before and on other computer's which run lion?
    Thanks.

OK it's actually called "inherit" it says:
Would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from "XX" on "X" backup disk?
    3 options
don't back up now,     Create new backup,    Inherit backup history
If I click inherit backup history... it will backup my new disk... and hopefully allow me to accesss the older one like i've been trying to do all along...

  • Privilege problem with old Time Machine backup

There are all kinds of posts about privilage problems, but I can't find my answer.  I did a clean install of Snow Leopard, and now I want to only drag my iTunes library and iPad backup files from my time machine backup onto the computer.  I can access all the files on the backup drive, including MobileSync and my iTunes folder, but when I try to pull them off the drive I get the terrible message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “MobileSync”."  The sharing & permissions for the folder say "read & write" for my user, and the "Locked" box isn't checked in the Get Info window.  When I click on the settings gear in the Sharing & Permissions window, the "Make me the owner" option is grayed out even after I unlock the options.  I tried resolution for issue 1 here.  And I also tried those terminal commands to no avail.  When I access Time Machine from the dock, all the backups prior to my reinstall are listed, but I can't access them.  Anyone have any other ideas?  This is extremely frustrating.  Note: I am able to copy over files from the backups created after I reinstalled Snow Leopard.
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
    sudo chmod -N /Volumes/Volumename

I personally think that Time Machine is a magical process run by unicorns.
I just moved from a MacBook Pro to a brand spanking new iMac 27". My iPad just does everything that I need a laptop to do, and an iMac is so much more powerful than a MBP.
Anyways, I setup my new iMac with the MBP Time Machine backup, as I usually do with new Macs. As I was going to sell my MBP, I was just going to use my 3TB Time Machine drive on my new iMac, thinking that I'd lose 9 months of backups, as I usually do with a new Mac. Except, apparently with Mountain Lion, the unicorns and wizards have decided that the old Time Machine backups are now transferred to the new iMac. So, even though my iMac is only 15 days old, it shows 9 months of backups. Which was a lifesaver, because an important photo got corrupted in the restore process, and I found it in the Wayback Machine.
    Cool stuff.

  • Migration Assistant Mav.: not showing ML Time Machine backup

    Hi Mac community,
    my own MBP mid 2010:
    clean install of Mavericks
connected FireWire 800 external hard disk with recent Time Machine backup done in Mountain Lion
started Migration Assistant, selected the Time Machine disk, and transferred all user data
everything worked absolutely PERFECTLY and now Mavericks runs smoothly with all my old user data
So I wanted to do the same thing with a relative's late 2009 iMac:
still in Mountain Lion, doing Time Machine backups to TWO different USB 2.0 hard disks
browsing the Time Machine disks manually to check whether all the files are there -- they are, including the (hidden) ~/Library folder
clean install worked fine, Mavericks runs OK
starting Migration Assistant in Mavericks ⇒ and - OH HORROR - the connected external Time Machine hard disk does not show up as a source - in fact, NOTHING shows up
So I copied over the data manually, for which I had to enable the root account (how else would one delete/replace a whole ~/Library folder??)
Then I tried to fix permissions manually (because other users could now read the files in the home folder).
All the old data (mails, contacts, calendars) is still there, but the whole thing doesn't really run smoothly; each time one logs into the account, keychain asks weird questions and dock icons pointing to programs show questions marks again. Later today, I'll try to fix permissions for the home folder as a whole (Recovery Boot ⇒ Terminal ⇒ resetpassword ⇒ Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs), but I'd rather do another clean install and somehow get Migration Assistant to offer me the Time Machine backup as a source for user data transfer - AS IT SHOULD in an OS that 'just works' ...
Anything I could do to convince Mavericks to use my old Time Machine backup??
This is a real nightmare for me ⇒ I f*cked up a relative's system -- really hope I can fix it again.
    Cheers, folks!

sorry, i don't know what else it could be then. if you have another external drive you can try doing a full system restore from the TM backups onto that drive and see if MA will recognize that drive and migrate from it. other than this there is always manual migration. slow and tedious but it can be done. see this link for help with that
