New Mac Importing Problem

I just followed the directions for transferring my files and applications from my old Macbook, PowerPC G4, to a new iMac super duper something (one day old from the Apple Store).
The new computer said, "You're done transferring, now go and enjoy!" or something like that. I clicked "continue" the screen turned blue for a while. So I turned off the laptop. Then the new computer said that something had been removed incorrectly.
Now, all I see is my old content and appearance from my laptop on the new computer. This does not look like the interface I saw at the store, the one with the applications all nicely lined up on the dock. I basically have my old computer in a new box.
What have I done wrong and how can I get my new computer back?
Thanks

You have your new computer... Migration Assistant just did its job and transferred you user account from your old Mac to the new one. It may look like your old G4, but it will be much faster.
For now, if you want to have the "new computer" look, you can create a new admin user account.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. The new account will use all the default settings, so it should have that +new Mac+ look. You can log out and log in to the other account too (and go back and forth). If you want to use the new account, you can use the /Users/Shared/ folder to manually move your data that got transferred into the new Mac.
You can also set your existing account to have the new look. It would be very easy to change the Desktop background or Dock (or whatever). What specifically do you not like about how it looks (versus how it looks when new )?

  • Imovie Mac importing problem or Camcorder problem?

I run a small business for kids parties. I video the kids dancing along to a track they have recorded (played on a cd player). Then i import the video, turn off the camcorder sound and import the finished mixed track of their singing and sync the picture and audio together. This has been working perfectly for over a year. But unfortunately in the last month when i try to sync up the audio track with the video, it starts off synced up perfectly, but gradually as the video goes on the video and audio become out of sync and by the end the video is either too fast or too slow. this is a huge problem! I thought it may the tapes in the video camera so i changed them and it's still doing it. Is this a video camera problem or computer importing problem. Can anyone help as it's ruining the kids DVDs!

I am surprised it has ever worked. That can normally only be done with synched professional equipment. Maybe they changed the CD player at the performance and the old one happened to play at the same rate as your Mac when it imports? (There is a slight difference between the playback speed between different players)
Or perhaps your video camera has become slightly worn, so it pulls the tape slower?
There are endless possibilities for problems with your setup.
I think you should take a look at the "add scaled" tip at the bottom here:
    http://danslagle.dvmix.com/mac/iMovie/audio/1001.shtml
(Instead of adding the extracted audio from iMovie, you should add the CD audio.)

  • New Mac Pro problems

I got a new Mac Pro today from Apple and have been having major problems with it.
The OSX installs ok and i get through to normal screens etc.
the problem arises with the installation of the Apple Intel Security patch. on restart I get the "your need to start your computer" etc. Which normally means a kernal problem.
Every time ive booted or restarted the computer I get the same.
Ive tried booting it from cd no good. Ive tried safe boot - No good. Apple help desk - Useless.
Have done a disk utility check off the CDcd, all ok so it could be software related. Or it could be some hardware problem

  • New mac user problems

So I'm a new mac convert - purchased my first macbook this summer - loved it... till recently. Basic setup, just using Parallels5 to run Win7 from bootcamp partition- everything fine. Then recently I noticed major slow down on bootup/shutdown, hanging on a blank blue screen at startup, not shutting down/restarting (get a message that I have to force it manually) and recently, the keyboard is unresponsive at login (seems to return after coming out of sleep). I thought that maybe it was software as I had updated to Parallels6, so I tried uninstalling it - no fix. Tried reinstalling/repairing the OS - no fix. So like any former Windows user, I figured I should wipe and start over. Booted from Mac OS startup DVD - took forever to load and also hung on a blue screen, but eventually was able to use Disk Utility to erase/format the Mac partition. I should mention that I ran the usual disk and hardware checks first and no problems were found. Then I tried reinstalling OSX6.3 - took about 40 minutes. However, when finished it gave me some installation failure message, asked me to restart and try again. I happened to restart without the DVD just to see and after a while it eventually booted OS, but again keyboard was unresponsive.
So I've very perplexed! Now it seems like it might be a hardware issue? Maybe a firmware problem? Anybody out there that could help - I'd be grateful.

One odd thing though is that the keyboard works fine at initial startup to choose to boot from the Win7 bootcamp partition. Once loaded, Win7 also works just fine - no errors or anything. Only with the "Mac side" does it seem to have an issue - mind you I haven't tried booting Win7 multiple times to be sure.

  • Transferring iTunes to new Mac - several problems

I'm upgrading from an old MacPro, OS X version 10.6.8 to a new Mac Mini, version 10.10.2.  iTunes versions 11.2.2 to 12.1.0.   I updated iTunes on the New Mac, and registered the New Mac with the iTunes Store.  I then connected the two Macs and transferred the entire iTunes directory from Old Mac to New Mac.  But:
    (1)  I only see 39 of my 161 apps in the app view.  The missing apps aren't listed at all.
    (2)  My play lists are all messed up - like they're old versions of the playlists
    (3)  All my Apple Store purchased music is listed as "in the cloud" rather than being local and resident on the New Mac, even though all the files transferred
    (4)  My Audible-purchased audiobooks are also not present in the library list even though all the ".aa" files transferred
Thinking I screwed up, I trashed the entire iTunes directory on the New Mac and did the whole process over again.  And I checked in iTunes Preferences Advanced to ensure the library was pointing to the right directory.
Help!  I really shouldn't have to re-download all my songs, re-download all my audiobooks, re-download ~130 apps, and rebuild all my playlists.  Please tell me it is something simple.
    Many advanced thanks.

Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
When this is to a new computer put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
If you did the above and it did not work then sometime in the past you did something that changed the configuration of iTunes files on your computer.  We will not know for sure what to advise unless you tell us what it was you did.
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
2011 ilounge article: Transferring your iTunes library - http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive/  - An article with good background information (similar to the links above), particularly if you are not sure your media files are all grouped for quick answer above. Unfortunately under the single term "transferring library" it describes two very different moves; relocating just your media (not  really transferring your library and not recommended unless you really need this configuration), and relocating media+database (really your whole "library").  Make sure you understand the difference before electing to move only media.

  • New D810 Import Problem

Help, please?! Can't import images from new Nikon D810, cf card, into Lightroom v4.4.  Using Nikon supplied UPC cord into any and all upc ports on computer (windows 7). Thumbnails appear but upon import get the message, "files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom."  I uninstalled old ViewNX2 and installed new ViewNX2 supplied with D810.  Also downloaded and installed most current Adobe DNG converter (8.7.0.309).  Device (D810) is seen by ViewNX2 but thumbnails to choose and transfer (import) do not appear. Clicking on device button results in nothing but "unselecting"  the D810.  Can't get images onto hard drive to convert to DNG and import into Lightroom.  I would prefer to just use Lightroom as that's 2 less programs for me to screw up in.  Please help?!!!

Let me state that sometimes your language confuses me.
"OS programs"? Is that really your operating system, or programs that runs under your OS, like Lightroom and ViewNX2?
Can you use your operating system to copy the photos to your hard disk? I am confused by your statements so far, so can you state clearly YES or NO?
Your Lightroom 4.4 will not import the RAW photos from your D810. Period. Can't be done. However, Lightroom 4.4 can import the DNG files. So...
Did you specifically try to use the DNG Converter by selecting the FOLDER, not individual files? I don't see an answer to this question. If you did try this, what happened? Was there an error message? If so, what was it?
With regards to using a card reader, this will have no effect on this particular problem whatsoever. NONE. Once you fix this problem, then yes, a card reader will be faster, but not until you fix this problem.

  • New mac user - problem installing OS X on mac mini 2012

I have just purchased a 10 month old mac mini which the previous owner had erased all of his files from before he shipped it to me. I decided I would do a fresh install of Mavericks so as to be sure I was starting with a clean system. I read up on this and then booted with cmd-R, then used the disk utils to erase the Macintosh HD partition so as to start clean, then used the Install OS X option and agreed to the T&Cs. At this point it asks for my Apple ID and so I provide this, but I am then told that I cannot download Lion as it is not available to this Apple ID. Hmmm.
I actually want to put Mavericks on the mac (which I understood to be free now) rather than Lion but I seem to be stuck at this point. Can anybody help please - but remember that I am new to mac/osx so explain clearly. Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up Linc. I went back to the Internet Recovery and it accepted my Apple ID this time but interestingly downloaded and installed Mountain Lion! I expected it to install the original Lion version (as this is what I purchased) or perhaps take me straight to Mavericks as it is the latest version, but to install the intermediate version seems odd. Anyway, it worked and everything seems to run fine so I am now downloading Mavericks as I write this.
Thanks to all for the help.

  • New mac, importing questions

I have upgraded and have manually installed everything that I needed because of problems with the migration assistant and to keep from having trouble with other applications. I have all my music on an external drive so that will not be a problem. Here are my questions.
    1. I would like to be able to have all my playlists set up like on my older mac. how do i transfer these over?
    2. I like having my music on the external drive but would like to have my podcasts on my mbpros hard drive bc I listen to those when I am away from my house. Is it possible to set this up?
    Thanks in Advance!
    macbook pro cd_2.16   Mac OS X (10.3)

if you used migration assiatnt and the name of the external drive that contains all your music files has not changed and is mounted when you open iTunes - everything will work as expected.
    Hope that helped.

  • New Mac User - Problem connecting to Internet via work Ethernet cable.

    Hi all.
I am having problems connecting to the Internet through my work ethernet cable.
When I plug the cable in, Network settings tells me it's there and working, all of the ip numbers conform to what the IT dep say they should be, but safari won't connect to any site.
I can see the shared folders on the Exchange Server, and access the files no problem, but cannot get any connection to the internet.
Have called Apple Support and they seem to think the issue is with my work's Network which I am starting to agree with. We went through all of the settings together and they said it all looked ok. Then we tried deleting and re-installing the system configuration folder. Still no joy.
Airport works fine, (have tried it on three different routers), as long as the Ethernet cable is unplugged.
If I plug the Ethernet cable directly into a router, it works fine also.
I connect to my work network by running an ethernet cable from the wall socket to my Macbook. It's the same cable that I connect my PC with, and works fine on my PC.
    Anyone come across anything similar?
My Macbook is just over a day old and running OS X 10.5.5.
    Thanks

For some reason (and it's nothing to do with me) it's all working fine now.
    Thanks for your help nonetheless.
    Stu:-)

  • Music from new Mac to my iPhone

I have a new mac, the problem is that I cannot link my iPhone with my new Mac. I should synchronize my iPhone. But it still doesn't work.

    Please define "it doesn't work".
What happens when you check the box to sync music to your phone?
Did you bother setting this phone up as a new device for yourself? Or are you still trying to use it as it was activated for the previous owner?
Start by doing: Settings>General>Resets>Erase All Content and Settings. If it's still set up for the previous owner.
That will put it back to an 'as new' state so you can set it up correctly.

  • Lightroom 5.4 Canon partial import problem (CR2s)

    Hello,
I have Lightroom 5.4 on a Windows 8.1 system x64.  My camera is a Canon 50D that's several years old.( i.e. not a brand new camera import problem)
When I plug my camera into my computer via the USB cable and try to import images into a Lightroom catalog, Lightroom will recognize and import jpgs, but it does not even see CR2 files. No errors, no thumbnails. It's like they are not there.  If I capture a single image as both a jpg and CR2 simultaneously it will only see the jpg and not the CR2.
If I open the Canon EOS Utility it sees any and all images (CR2's included).
I've read a few posts so to help narrow it down:
    1) I have write access to the folder (b/c I can import the jpgs.).
    2) My Windows system does not recognize the CR2 files in an exporer window if they are still on the camera (to be specific, it sees that there are files, just not the type and no thumbnail. Not even a properties option with right click). I can't pull the files directly off the camera with my computer only with the Canon app. I have the latest camera codec pack put out by  Microsoft KB2899190 from 12/9/2013.
    3) Once the CR2's are on my computer via the Canon EOS app they are viewable in Expolorer (thumbnails) and can be imported into Lightroom.
    4) I have cleared and reformatted the flash card (more than once). Rebooted and powered down the PC and Camera multiple times (removed camera batt. and Unplugged PC).
    5) As of time of this post Lightroom is up to date.
I believe there is some communication issue with my camera and this particular PC setup. My wife's computer does not have this issue (she has Vista). When she plugs in the camera the thumbnails pop up in an explorer window for her right away.
    Thoughts?
Thank you very much for your help.

Yes, for many people. Recent versions of Lightroom in particular seem to be quite fickle when trying to import directly from camera, and the "fix" in virtually all cases is to use a card reader.

  • Can I avoid re-syncing my iPod once synced with an old Mac to a new Mac ?

So, I recently bought a new Mac, the problem is that I had my iPod synced with iTunes on my old Mac. I would like to know if there is a way to transfer the let's say ownership of iTunes (of my iPod) to my new Mac. Instead of having to sync my iPod with my new Mac. Because, as you know an iPhone, an iPod or even an iPad can only be synced with a computer at a time. I mean is there a way to avoid to have to re-sync my iPod with my new Mac.
    Thank you!
    -Pedro

Use Migration Assistant to copy all your user data (including iTunes Library) from old computer to new computer.
Then the iPod will sync as if connected to old computer.
I mean is there a way to avoid to have to re-sync my iPod with my new Mac
Never plug it into new Mac.
However, that's not really what you want.
You don't want to erase and reinstall everything.
    See my first paragraph.

  • How do I transfer non-purchased songs to a new mac?

I had a mid 2009 Macbook Pro and the hard drive in the computer got damaged. I was able to back up some stuff but because this unexpectedly happen I was not able to back up my itunes library. My other apple products are synced via icloud and i wouldnt have a problem transfering the itunes songs into a new mac. the problem is that i have non-purchased songs and I dont know how to transfer them into the new mac. Does anyone know how can i transfer non-purchased content into itunes? Thanks for the help

Unless you're able to restore them from the hard drive, you'll need to either do so from a backup or reload them from the original source.
