New Mac.....migration transfer

I got a Mac Book Pro. I turned it on and started the migration process via wifi. However the process was halted. I cancelled the transfer on my other laptop but the screen on the mac has said 'transferring information' for ages now. How do I stop it?

Do I use Migration Assistant OR use my Time Machine Backup to load my new MacBook. Which is best??
That's not an either/or question.
You can use +Setup Assistant+ OR +Migration Assistant+ to set it up; either can be used directly from your old Mac; or from a Time Machine backup of it; or from a "clone" of it's internal HD.
I'd recommend using +Setup Assistant+ directly from the old Mac; it's quickest, simplest, and most reliable. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a detailed explanation of both.
As dbsneddon says, and as noted there, you may want to reinstall complex 3rd party apps, especially if you're coming from a PPC Mac.

  • Bought a new Mac, migrated data, now CS4 doesn't work. Why?

I bought a new Mac, had the Apple guys migrate my data and apps to it. Now CS4 doesn't work.
I researched a bit and found that I SHOULD have deactivated and uninstalled CS4 from my old Mac. I've now done that.
But do I have to uninstall CS4 files from my new Mac now--and reinstall? Will that work?

    Hi,
I have a question related to one you answered above: "bought a new Mac, migrated data, now CS4 doesn't work."
My situation is a little different. I am hoping you can help me with it. I hope I am not violating any protocols by asking you specifically?  A year ago I reinstalled my Mac's operating system. My CS4 is on my computer under "Previous System." I am unable to open it from there and I do not want to attempt migrating it for reasons noted above. I did try to reinstall it as you suggested to hbrady67 by dowloading from CS4 products with my serial number but I got this message: "Upgrade Check  We looked in the default location for qualifying products installed on the machine, but none were found. You may verify upgrade eligibility now by completing the fields to the right. 1) Select a product you already own. 2) Enter a serial number for this product.  CS4 wasn't in the list of selections. The protocol suggested won't work for me since I am not doing an upgrade but trying to reinstall what I already have. Can you direct me on where to go/what to do?  Thank you very much.      Bergi.
I found the solution to this problem. I was able to download the trial version of what I have and enter the serial number from there. However, it still asked for a serial number from previous software: "your setup is for an upgrade version of Adobe Creative Suite 4." (I entered the serial number that I have for CS2. And it was accepted.  Thank you.  Bergi

  • New Mac - Migration Assistantat not working...metadata?

    Hi there,
Got myself a new Mac and Migration Assistant just didn't play ball. Not sure why - could have been me upgrading fro a 10.4 PPC G5 to Intel 10.5...
Anyway, ended up dragging and dropping across the network. Got all my music, but no metadata - playcounts etc. The old Mac is still in operation so I can access file son it etc.
Any ideas on how I can get the metadata appended to the songs on my new Mac?
    Thanks,

Here's how to get the metadata accross. On the new Mac, you're going to have to start over with movin your library. Go to Home-> Music-> iTunes and delete everything there.
On the old Mac, go to Home-> Music-> iTunes. Copy everything in that folder to the same location on the new Mac. This will put all your music (that was in your iTunes music folder; you'll have to copy files that are in other places separately) into iTunes, and keep all your metadata, games, artwork, etc.

  • New Mac migration - CC 2014

Has anyone used the Mac migration assistant to flawlessly move CC 2014 apps to a new Mac?
I've read some older threads where people ran into problems and had to completely re-install CC. I ordered a new iMac and am just wondering the best way to set it up. I could start from scratch, but I have so many other files, apps, system settings that I'd rather take my chances with the migration assistant. Or is there a way to use the migration assistant but leave out Adobe apps?

I solved it. i just moved all the adobe application folders into the wastebasket. started the creative cloud application download again. signed up my old mac from the creative cloud by using the cc app. then started the applications download again and it worked.

  • About to purchase new mac: Migrating Logic

    Hi,
I'm about to purchase a new mac and I don't have my original Logic disks. I've got the studio upgrade disks and obviously the serial from original logic.
    I'll have to migrate.
From peoples experience, will I have any problems migrating Logic from my Macbook Pro Snow Leopard to Imac Lion?
    Thanks.
    Spot.

I upgraded from Logic Pro to Logic Studio.
So, yes the upgrade pack does have the disks needed.
Sometimes I'm a little slow, and need to sort of say things out loud...
    Thanks for your patience.
    Spotty.

  • New Mac - Data Transfer

    Hi,
I have a mid-2007 Intel iMac running Mavericks with both an external Time Machine and SuperDuper (clone) backup.  I've read through several posts suggesting you can use Migration/Setup assistant or Time Machine backup.  I'll assume it's a bad idea to run SuperDuper from my external to clone the new hard drive but can I use this clone as the source to pull the user folders over through the Setup Assistant?  Or do I have to connect my new iMac to my old one?  If you recommend I go computer to computer, do I use an Ethernet cable (this was unclear to me)?
    I appreciate the clarification.
    Thanks.
    Sully

Thanks to you both for responding.  I finally received my new machine yesterday.   I followed Pondini using Setup Assistant with the clone and it worked flawlessly.  I can't believe how easy it was.   It took several hours to copy over the 400GB or so.  I was able to inherit the time machine which also resides on a separate partition on the external drive.  Wow!
And man does this machine make my old one look very tired...:)
    Thanks again.

  • Can you transfer only a users account settings on a new mac?

I am wondering if you can get a new mac and transfer only the old macs user account settings without the applications or any folders of any other user. also can you transfer only that users music and pictures and everything?
    Thank you,
    Caleb

Migration assistant (it's an applications/Utilities) gives you an option to transfer individual accounts, applications and other data. you can choose to transfer a single account. This will transfer the whole home directory of that account. You can't pick and choose which folders in the home directory you want to migrate. if you want that kind of control - migrate by hand.

  • HT3258 after   transferring data from old mac to new mac, I can't see the transfer files and application on new mac.?

    Help.

    Thanks for your reply
    I did reboot the system.
    still can't see new user.
One thing though when the system finished transferring the files
at the end a message came up
" 2013-09-11 04:18:05 +0000 Paul Nirwan could not be created.
I did the transfer two times, same thing. first time I used the WiFi
and second time from my back up disk with USB connection, using Migration Assistant.
Second time also said that Paul'Mac already exist, Paul'Mac 2 created.
How can I get rid of first data trasnferred?
It will be using too much space on hard drive if Ileave it therre.

  • Transferring music from old PC to new mac

    Hey guys,
I recently sold my alienware to buy the new macbook pro. That being said, I never had both computers ar the same time - I sold one, then bought the other like a week after. Now, as I try to transfer all my iPhone's data into my new macbook, It seems that the only option for my music is to erase it. This has struck me as an enormous inconvenience; Is there a way-simply put-to plug in my iPhone to my new mac and transfer all its music to the mac's library?
    Thanks in advance,
    Omarjr50

    Welcome to the discussions,
Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your iphone, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data, pictures and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought music from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your iphone got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.
    Restoring: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • Deleted songs on my iPod by sync with new Mac - ups! Can I sync with iPad to get all song back?

deleted songs on my iPod when sync with new Mac - ups! However all songs are still on my iPad library. Can I sync with iPad to get all song back?

You can use the transfer purchases feature to put the songs back into iTunes from the iPad - as long as the songs were purchased from iTunes.
Connect the iPad, launch iTunes and then right click on the iPad name under devices and select Transfer Purchases. But ..... Before you do that - turn off auto sync first.
Launch iTunes and the go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing Automatically. Check the box at the bottom that says that. Then click OK. Then you can connect the iPad to the new Mac to transfer the purchases.
This will only work for music purchased from iTunes. If you have music ripped from CD's, you will need a third party app - like TouchCopy.
You can also download the songs again in iTunes as long as you use the same Apple ID. But read this about downloading past purchases as there are some restrictions based on where you live.

  • I used the migrator utility to transfer music and picture from my old PC and now I have 2 accounts on my new Mac, how can I get back to one account and still have the music and photos transfered ?

I used the migrator utility to transfer itunes and photos from my old PC to my new Mac and ended up with 2 accounts on my new computer. How do I transfer the music and photos and only have the 1 account on the new Mac ?

That's not easy.  The Windows migration tool makes a new user account, and you can't prevent it.
You may be able to transfer what you want manually, but it's not quick or easy.  See Transferring files from one User Account to another.

will microsoft office for mac 2004 transfer from my emac running 10.4.11 to the new iMac running mountain lion using migration assistant?

Microsoft Office 2004 will not work on any Mac running Lion or Mountain Lion. You will need to upgrade to Office 2011, buy the less expensive iWork apps from the App Store or use a free office clone like OpenOffice or NeoOffice.

When I go to migration assistant, and hit the continue button on the introductory screen, I get a message that says M Asst wants to make changes - type your password to allow this.   What is my password or how do I set one up for this?

When you set  up your Mac you had to enter a admin password to set up your user account.
If you did not enter one then try using the  "blank window" as your password. ie Just hit return with nothing entered.

  • HT2518 I USED THE MIGRATION ASSISTANT TO TRANSFER MY PHOTOS FROM A PC TO MY NEW MAC. HOWEVER, THE PHOTOS ARE NOT ORGANIZED AT ALL. DID I DO IT WRONG OR DO THEY JUST TRANSFER OVER IN A BIG BATCH INTO IPHOTO?

I used the migration assistant to transfer my photos from PC to mac. The photos were not organized at all. They were in the all files section in my finder. I just clicked and drug the pics file to iphoto and the are just in there in a big bunch. Was there a way I could have had them transferred over in there folders from PC?

Do you know where the actual photo files are located on your laptop? If so, you can transfer them to the Mac over a LAN or by saving them to an external HDD, thumb drive or burning them to a disk. Then you can import the photos to the iPhoto app that came on your new Mac.
It would be the same process for the videos, however, it would depend what type of video files they are, as to which Mac app might allow you to view them.
BTW, since your Mac is new you need to Accept the iLife apps; iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie into your Mac App Store/iTunes account. Open the MAS, sign into you account, go to the Purchased pane and accept the apps.
