New Mac mini 2.5GHz i5 Temperature

Hi there, I got the new 2011 Mac mini 2.5GHz i5 model on Thursday and I have noticed that it seems to run reasonably hot. I have the iStat Pro widget installed (not sure if it accurate) and it reports a CPU temperature of around 55-60 C at idle (no user applications running) and I have seen it increase up to about 70 C when I was watching 1080p Flash YouTube video. I would just like to know if these temps are normal, so if any of you have this model could you please let me know your temps.
Also, I read that in 10.7 Lion, Adobe Flash does not use hardware acceleration so does mean this will increase the load on the CPU instead of using the GPU for acceleration?
Thanks

Thanks for posting your temps! I have just checked mine again and they are similar to yours. My ambient 1 & 2 are 47 C and the thermometer in my room says 23 C.

  • New Mac Mini and iMovie6, & iDVD

    Hi
I was wondering if someone can answer these questions for me. I have a 12" powerbook and iMac 800mhz power pc G4 (lampshade kind), and I have been editing movies in iMovie and creating DVD with iDVD. But it's getting a bit slow.
I was thinking about getting the new Mac Duo core mini 1.83 GHZ with 2 gig of Ram to use as editing bay (iMovie) and to create DVD using iDVD.
Is the new Mac Mini good enough for that? Has anyone encounter any problem with previous mac mini using iLife? I don't edit a lot, maybe twice a year, 1 1/2 hour or 2 hour project. I already have external monitor (viewsonic) and apple keyboard and mouse.
or is it entirely better to go with iMac 24 inch.?
    Any thoughts?
    Alex

In context, the current $799 Mac mini has very similar overall performance to my G5 2.0 dual processor power mac, bought in October 2003, so while the drive is slower (not all that critical in video editing work since 5400rpm is certainly sufficient) a mini will perform notably better in iMovie, and render to iDVD much faster than your present 800MHz PB. Certainly, comparing the performance of my 800MHz TiBook in iMovie and Final Cut Express against even the older 1.5GHz G4 mini with IGb RAM, the mini was far smoother and more responsive to use.
There's no doubt that a 24" iMac would provide a faster, richer, environment in which to work, and if your budget would extent to that system it would seem a poor choice not to opt for that, but as has been said many, many times in these discussions, it's also worth bearing in mind that the mini's performance and capabilities are not defined by it's size. A Mac mini is far more powerful than merely for basic computing needs!

  • HD Flash Video does not play smoothly on brand new Mac Mini

I just bought a new Apple Mac Mini (2.5GHz model with discrete 256Mb AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics card, OS X 10.7.3). One thing I bought it for was watching HD video on the BBC iPlayer site here in the UK, but I found that it won't play it smoothly. It drops frames, particularly noticable as the camera pans. I'm using Safari and the current 11.1 Flash Player, but I've tried the latest release candidate too (11,2,202,221). The videos are 720p 50Hz, H.264 encoded, 3.2 Mbps, and use 80% - 100% CPU, so it seems to me that I don't have hardware acceleration. Enabling or disabling hardware accleration doesn't seem to make a difference.
I'd like to test it with other HD H.264 Flash videos, but I can't find any. Can anyone point me to some?

Not all video will have full hardware acceleration (stage video) enabled.  Can you try the following link?
    http://youtu.be/SHZFsJKlsuA?hd=1
I just gave this a try with Chrome on my Macbook Pro (15", mid 2010) and Flash used between 8% - 25% cpu, the average being somewhere below 15%.

  • New Mac mini terribly noisy during iPhoto slideshow

    Hi everybody
I just bought a new Mac mini Core 2 Duo. In normal operation it runs silently as expected. But when I run a slide show in iPhoto the fan starts turning faster and faster and soon makes an awful lot of noise (sounds almost like a hairdryer). Very annoying! The same happens if one of the animated OS X screen savers is active. Is there a problem with my Mac mini or does anybody else experience the same problem with the new Core 2 Duo Mac minis? Thanks for any information!

I'm not sure that the algorithm for fan control is based solely on temperature - though my experience is with PPC minis rather than Intel models, so it may vary. However, on my PPC units, fan activity seems to derive from sustained CPU load, and iPhoto certainly seems to create that!
Which is not to say that your mini is not problematic, so I would be much inclined to contact Apple to discuss the problem. The absence of a local Apple store means that you'd have to do so by phone, but with a new C2D unit, I doubt you'd have any problem getting traction with that that issue, particularly if you ask for it to be escalated up from the first tier of support.
It would be interesting to know what Apple's comments are on the issue if you do discuss it with them, but if you manage to test out another C2D model and find it differs, I can see you might have more interest in simply having that unit replaced!

  • GOT MY NEW MAC MINI THIS MORNING

I love it, it's going to be so sweet. I"m installing updates now, and I checked the specs...i got a 1.5ghz ppc g4 processor!

So, what are your plans for the new Mac mini?
I find that this machine is particularly good for cramped spaces. It makes an excellent RV computer, IMHO, because you can setup a miniature workstation hooked up to a telly. Kind fun.

  • Which new Mac Mini to buy?

I'm looking to buy the new mac mini. Please help me decide which one that I should buy based on my uses. I will use this computer for app development, internet browsing, some photo editing, and maybe even for games. I know that I will at least need the mac below:
    2.5GHz : 500GB
    2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    4GB memory
    500GB hard drive1
    AMD Radeon HD 6630M
    OS X Lion
But what upgrades should I invest in? With my uses will it be worth getting the 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 and the 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm??
If not just say so and tell me what your opinion is.
    Thanks in advance.

    >With my uses will it be worth getting the 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 and the 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm??
Yes and yes if you plan on doing photo editing and games. I would also get 8 gigs RAM, but by all means get it aftermarket.

  • Seeking new Mac Mini monitor advice

I'm about to purchase a new Mac Mini i5. Any advice on an alternative monitor to the Apple 27 inch Thunderbolt monitor? I'm replacing an old 2006 24" iMac. Mahalo!

Unfortunately, GKaya, I don't have any advice beyond what you might find in some of those posts. I received my Mac mini on 12/14/12, and the Mac mini EFI firmware update had just come out 12/10/12. So I never had any flickering issues with a 26" 1080p Vizio TV or now a 27" 1080p AOC monitor, each in turn connected via HDMI. And I have not had the "crushed whites" issue that a few folks still have. I'm not sure what the issue there is. I didn't do anything out of the ordinary to avoid it. I just plugged the TV and the monitor straight into the mini's HDMI port with an Amazon Basics HDMI cable and used the default monitor settings.
And the picture is great. I eventually calibrated the picture with the AOC, but in the end, it made a very subtle difference, a matter of preference in brightness and temperature, not quality.
There are reports that the beta off OS X 10.8.3 fixes the remaining HDMI graphics issues, so here's hoping that you'll be rescued soon.

  • SMC Reset Procedure on New Mac Mini

I received my new HDMI Mac Mini yesterday. The machine works fine, however, the fan runs constantly (and VERY loudly) from the moment it boots no matter what I am doing (all I have done is install iWork). I read that a SMC reset might be necessary to calm the fan down. I used the old Mac Mini reset procedure but it didn't change anything. Does anyone know if there is a new SMC reset procedure for the new Mac Mini? Or, does anyone know other reasons the fans would spin up immediately to full speed and never change?

So just to be clear, you unplugged the system from the AC feed, then held in the power button for about 5 seconds to bleed off any residual charge, and only THEN did you plug it back in?
But the fans can also go into high gear if the internal temperature is too hot. You can only cool a device to the ambient temperature of the environment it's in. So if you're down in the south of florida, or one of those places where it gets to around 100F in the shade, you can expect to hear the fans going so the system doesn't melt down.
Another possibility is that you have a bad temperature sensor cable, or it somehow didn't get connected. If the system can't get a reading from the temp sensors, it defaults to putting the fans into high gear, which is the safest option. That one you don't want to attempt on your own. Have someone at an apple store or local AASP check for that.

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • My brand new Mac Mini is heating up

Just bought a new Mac mini and whilst I'm setting up, after about 1-2 hour, not even start using but just updating the software, the surface already feel so hot that it could cook an egg! A child could burn his hand on it! Is this NORMAL?? Also the machine seems awfully quiet and seems the power supply was built into the main box, is there supposed to be a fan? I'm afraid to leave it overnight un attended, so I haven't started doing any migration from my TimeMachine yet. Wonder if anyone has the same experience or is it just me getting a faulty product (only got it for one week and only open the box today).

It can get pretty darn hot when doing something intensive, I've heard some up to 90 degress Celsius according to the temperature monitor inside. However, when it does, there is a very obvious fan noise. If you do not hear any fan noise, it could be it's defective.
When loading up a new mini, there are some processes that can take a long time to do, like, in the background, spotlight is indexing, etc. That can go on for many hours. That can definitley speed up the fan. But again, you can hear it. It's not hard if it is anywhere near you.
You can check your fan speed vis something called smcfancontrol (free download), I believe it shows temps also.

  • New Mac Mini running very hot?

I have just bought (few days ago) a new Mini 2.0GHz with standard 1GB RAM and 120GB HD and it's my first Intel Mini so I have no reference for this behaviour.
When I boot the system up it shows CPU at around 57-59 C temperature and 1-2% load, so basically idle state.
If I get it to do things, it will climb up to 78-80 C at 80% load. Did not run at 100% load yet, but 78 C feels pretty hot as it is.
The bottom of the unit is very hot and the sides and even top are warmer than what I'd expect the Mini to be.
Is this normal behaviour or should I return this unit and get a different one?

Thanks for all replies, I guess I'll just have to settle that it runs this high.
Though some people have told me their Minis are cooler than 57 C idle, I tend to believe Apple does not take much care when applying thermal paste or seating the heatsink onto the CPU. I have read way too many reports supporting this to be the case when people opened their Minis and checked...
I have same problem that you with new Mac Mini 2GHz and 2GB of Ram and 160GB of HDD.
Yesterday I run aMule, and I can see CPU B was 79º and CPU A 68º with 50% or 60% of load and I was afraid of it.
Do you use your Mac Mini to full load and it works well? Did you try to apply a new thermal paste?
Thank you and sorry for my bad English

  • New Mac Mini & Dual 24" LED Displays - Possible ?

I would like to run 2 x 24" Apple LED Cinema displays from a new Mac Mini. Can this be done without any loss of resolution or speed ?

    Thanks woodmeister50 that's very useful.
I should clarify its the 2.5GHz Mini I'm considering with the i7 upgrade option. I already have a 24" LED Cinema display and was thinking of getting another (used) 24" LED display to match it. I'd buy the new Thunderbolt displays however 2 x 27" takes up a lot of desk space !! The alternative would to acquire 2 x HP ZR24 displays and use those instead ?

  • AMD Radeon 6750M or Intel Intel HD Graphics 4000 New Mac Mini

I currently have a MBP with the AMD Radeon 6750M 1gb dedicated graphics i7 quad with 8gb. Since I do not need a laptop any more, I was thinking of the new mini with 16gb. and the new fusion hd.
I also have a 27" cinema display.  Do you think I will see a difference in graphics performance since I do a ton of video and image editing. How does one compare the graphics
    thanks

I happy to see the Core i7 option in the non-server configuration, but very disappointed in the regression only having an integrated GPU.   I use a 27" Thunderbolt Display with the 2011 Mac Mini 2.5Ghz with 6670M discrete graphics.  It does "ok" for casual use, though it really struggles with full-screen HD video (there's a very noticeable choppiness), at least in Safari.  It's passable with Firefox or Chrome, though even there the computer's fan revs up at times.  Also, actions such as swiping Launchpad screens exhibits a noticable lag.
My usage includes casual desktop stuff like email & web browsing, but also full screen video, photo manipulations in Lightroom & Photoshop, and occasional video work in Premiere Elements.  In addition to the video issues I described above, I see what feel like "long" delays (compared to my Core i7 Windows 7 box) when doing things like opening a 16MP Nikon raw file in Photoshop from Lightroom.  It's usable since I'm not doing this for a living, but it's annoying.
I wonder with the 2.6Ghz quad-core CPU and Intel 4000 GPU configuration how overall performance would compare to my present setup...
I realize many will just say the Mini isn't the right box for what I am doing.  But the iMac or MBP don't allow me the flexibility to upgrade just the computer & keep my current display.  So I'm trying to discern whether upgrading to the best possible 2012 Mini configuraiton would provide a noticable improvement over the 2011 model or if the Intel 4000 vs 6670M would negatively offset the CPU upgrade.

  • New Mac Mini and Analog TV

I just bought a new March 2009 Mac Mini. I am trying to hook it up to and old analog TV. The TV has SVIDEO and RCA jacks. I purchased the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter only to find out it will not work with the new model. It seems the new model only outputs DVI-D and not DVI-I.
I am trying to hook up the mini-dvi to SVIDEO on the back of my TV and then for the audio connect them to the TV with RCA jacks. Is there any way to get the new mac mini to work with an analog TV?
    Thanks

When you cite "VGA converter to RCA" do you mean a little box that actually converts the signal down to RCA/composite, like this:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011407&pid=4724&seq=1&format=2
or simply an adaptor like this one:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040113&pid=2509&seq=1&format=2
The crucial thing I'm waiting to find out is whether the new Minis provide ANY analog video signal to either of the video ports at all (which would seem to be the case, since VGA is analog, right?), or if the analog roadblock is simply caused by the currently available adaptors.

  • Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

    Hi,
I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
    Here's what I did:
    Installation:
    - took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
    - updatet the System
    - installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
    - installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
    - copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
    Troubleshooting:
    - tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
    - that threw an error "no priviliges"
    - started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
    - that did not help
    - tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
    - that command returned: No index.
    - the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
    - returned: Error: unable to perform operation.  (-400) No index.
    - went the hard way
    - unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    - erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
    - loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...

    Hi Ray Land,
We can help narrow down the cause.  What operating system are you using on your new Mac Mini?
If you are running the Mountain Lion OS, you can download the latest driver here.  An important note is that the current print queue must be deleted before installing the new driver.  This will ensure proper communication.
