New mac mini 2009 from box problems

Hi, i am from Ukraine, my English is not good. It's bad. Smile
But, i have problems whith my Mac Mini.
My friend bought me a mac in USA and post it to me. When i unpack it and try to connect to my monitor i had a problem.
Mini tunr on and LED turn on and cooler turn on. Smile, but no power on USB (mouse and keyboard) and no video signal. When it's turn on LED is white in 5 sec., then it's turn off for a 1 sec. ant again turn on. Cooler work very silent. CD drive is not working. Sad
I try to connect mini to my ASUS PW201 monitor and Samsung SM 932b via MINI DVI to DVI connector. Can i connect via miniDVD-DVI+DVI-VGA(no Apple) connector?
Reset the System Management Controlle, PMU, SMU, PRAM and NVRAM did't help me.
Sorry for my English.

Hi,I'm using an older Intel Mac mini. I've used it with three different displays. When I use a "DVI to HDMI" cable the mini will boot, I get the Gray Screen, the Spinning Wheel, then everything goes BLACK for a second then the Desktop appears. With a "DVI to VGA" cable it boots fine without the monitor going BLACK for a second. You might try using a different cable combination.
You can easily (easy is relative) drop in a different Hard Drive. You will need to reformat the drive so it will be compatible with your Mac. You can use your install disc to reformat the new dhttp://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/Mac-mini-1-TB-Upgrade-Kit/IFrive, then you can install Leopard from that disc.

  • Problem migrating to new Mac mini Server from Time Machine Backup

I sell my old Mac mini Server and after I purchase the new one (unibody). I had the Time Machine Backup but I'm not able to restore it to the new mac mini. I started it with the Server Install DVD into it and I went to Utility menu to choose "*Restore from Time Machine backup*" but it said that *it was not possible to restore the backup to this machine because its a different hardware, and suggested to use Migration*. So I restarted it and when it asked me to choose between "setting up a new server" or "transfer information from an existing server" I chose this last. In the next menu didn't appear any Time Machine backups so I mounted the time machine backup and copied the Latest hd backup to an external firewire hd and I connected it to the new one. In the migration menu list appeared my backup but there was a *yellow triangle icon* over it and the message "*Migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. Configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again*". But how can I config a static address into my backup if I can't restore it into a machine? I don't have anymore the old mac mini to restore the backup and make any change in the configuration!
Any one can please help or give me suggestions?
    Many thanks

    I solved it!
I changed the network settings by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
So I successfully restored my SL server installation, but now I have an issue with Ethernet and SD reader. See this post if you are interested:

  • New Mac Mini with Lion Video Problem With Dell E228WFP monitor

Just purchased a new mini Mac 2.3 with Lion pre installed.  I connected to my old Dell E228WFPI monitor via the Mini Display to VGA adapter.  The mini mac worked fine for an hour until I put it to sleep.  It would not rewake.  After rebute the gray screen and apple logo appear with clock, but after clock screen to black and monitor goes to power saver mode.  Took unit to apple store twice and could not resolve problem by changing resolution or other methiods.  Finally, we learned that the system works fine using Belkin HDMI to DVI cable.  This Dell Monitor had DVI connector.  Hope this helps...

How can a computer that's been turned off (and I mean completely OFF) get a network request? Only a sleeping computer should react to such a request. If you're sure you shut down (Apple Menu, Shut Down), then only an internal power supply or logic board problem should cause this. The only way it could be software is if Lion is not shutting down the computer but is instead putting it to sleep. Is it a new Mac Mini? If so, you should have it replaced or repaired.

  • Voltage of new Mac Mini (2009) Power Adapter

I want to take my new my new Mac Mini overseas, but when I received it I was surprised to see the power adapter rated at 100v-120v only. The tech specs on Apple's website list the line voltage as 100v-240v and I assumed the power adapter would follow suit. Both my iMac and the power adapter for my macbook are dual voltage.
Can anyone confirm that the new adapter is rated only up to 120v? Apple Support seemed as miffed by the discrepancy as I was. Additionally, Apple does not seem to have a special dual-voltage power adapter for sale. I would like to be able to plug the mini into a 220v grid, but will not do so unless I can find a definitive answer to the question above.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the information, but I think we are talking about slightly different things. The watts are equal to volts * amps. I believe the power brick ensures that the mini is powered by 110W, but the the brick itself has to be appropriately rated for the local voltage or else it will not function correctly.
For instance, if my mini power brick is truly rated for 100v-120v and I plug it into a 240v outlet, then I would expect to hear a pop and smell some burnt electronics. It might spare the mini, but the adapter could fry. I speak from experience--I was careless with a treadmill in the past.
I believe that you mean you use 240v power and your adapter works fine. Could you do me a favor? Could you look at the small print on your mini adapter and see if it says 100v-240v or something else? If it says 100v-120v and it still works in the UK, then mine might be ok for 240v as well.
    Thanks again.

  • New Mac Mini... airport problems

Hi, I have a problem with the wireless connection of my new mac mini (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz)... it's very slow and the signal strength is always up and down... what to do? I also have an iBook and a PC connected at the same router and they're working fine. Should I wait for a firmware upgrade or should I contact Apple for support? Thanks

+I think I placed the mini in the best place+
OK, but since it's not working for you, it might still be useful to know how everything is arranged, distances between computers and router, and anything between mini and router. And presence of nearby 2.4GHz cordless phones.
    To quote AndyO:
"The real problem is that unlike almost every other problem in system troubleshooting where symptoms can help one refine the possible causes until only one is left, variable wifi is something that is very difficult to deal with at a distance because there are many, many factors which can impact the quality and level of signal, and _much can hinge on small details that often get overlooked_.
"It should be noted however that the general consensus has typically been that Mac minis suffer poorer wifi reception than other systems, in part one suspects as a result of the antenna being up in the top-right corner of the enclosure where it is in part screened by the casing. Thus, make sure there is nothing directly above the mini itself, or immediately to the side of it which might hinder signal."

  • Adding new mac mini to network causing problems

    Hello,
I have a small home network that has been working great, and just bought a mac mini for media purposes. Unfortunately, adding the mini has ruined my network performance, and I don't understand why.
    Previous Setup:
    - airport extreme (firmware 7.4.2)
    - 2 macbook pros using wireless (leopard & snow leopard)
    - airport express only used to make a printer accessible wirelessly (6.3, "join a wireless network")
    - iPhone
that worked great, but one of the macbook pros was doing double duty as media and work computer. Also, there was no nice way to do time machine backups without physically plugging in a USB HD. I was using USB into airport extreme, but that is not supported and never worked well for me (though it seems to work for others).
So, I bought a mac mini in Oct' 2009 (immediately after small upgrades were announced).
    New setup:
    - airport extreme
    - mac mini using ethernet cable to airport extreme (USB HD shared for macbook pros to do wireless time machine backups) mac mini running snow leopard
    - 2 macbook pros as before
    - airport express serving printer as before
    - iPhone
    Problems:
    - very slow wireless (skype is unusable)
    - dropping wireless connections a lot (disassociating with XXX (reserve 2) message)
I tried turning off everything for a few min and trying again with the mac mini unplugged (eg. previous setup). Everything worked great, Skype 2 way video was fine. Then I plugged in the mini, and again I have the same problems.
It's frustrating because everything is made by Apple, and I bought the **** mac mini partially because the airport extreme-USB HD solution (eg. mimicking a time capsule) is not officially supported.
It seems like there is some weird interference being caused by the mini. It's not a wireless issue (b/c it's plugged in), but maybe it's a DHCP problem.
Also, I can't find where one sets the maximum number of DHCP leases that the airport extreme will offer. I seem to remember that setting, and thought that might be the problem, but I can't find it now.

For those that might find this thread:
    - moving the mini and the airport extreme about 18 inches apart helped some, will monitor this.
here's a couple useful articles about the interference issues in general:
    http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/hardware/optimizingairportconnectivity
    http://www.macworld.com/article/60801/2007/11/dec07mobilemac.html
I can't turn off bluetooth b/c that's the mini's keyboard and mouse. I tried to move to the 5GHz band for the wireless... which seems to work pretty well for the macbook pros, but the airport express I have (for printing) won't support that so it's a no-go solution for now (unless I spend even more money for one of the new ones).
Seems odd that the mini and airport extreme which look like they were designed to be stacked on top of each other, actually don't work well that way.

  • I have a new Mac mini and are using an Acer monitor. Unfortunately, the Acer will not show any image on a startup from cold. It does however work completely correctly when restarting from 'sleep' condition. Can anyone help? Thanks in anticipation.

I have a new Mac mini- changed from Windows XP. I have a peculiar problem. I use an Acer monitorwith the Mac which works fine when the Mac is 'un-sleeped'. But, if I have shutdown the Mac the Acer does  not recognisethe start up - at least it shows nothing on screen. When I have shut down - nowknowing the problem, I use an old Samsung monitor to cope with the start up -it does so fine - and then put the Mac to 'sleep', then change monitors andrestart the Mac - the Acer is now fine. I am using the same cables for theSamsung and the Acer. The Acer had no problems with my old Windows system -from sleep or shut down. I really do not think there is anything wrong with theAcer - could it be some sort of recognition problem? Please can anyone assist.Donald Picton

I posted the same question a day ago with no response. I'm using an Acer x193w. You actually don't have to switch monitors to get it to work. Just make sure you turn off the monitor after shutting down the Mac mini (actually push the power button on the monitor, not just let it go to sleep). If you turn on the monitor (push the power button on the monitor), then power up the Mac mini, the monitor is recognized. The issue didnt exist with Snow Leopard for me. It only started after I started using Lion. Hope this issue gets fixed In a future OS update.

  • Running AppleWorks on new Mac Mini

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac Mini, only to learn that AppleWorks didn't ship with it because it has been discontinued. So, I was wondering if there's any way to get AppleWorks to run on Leopard. If there is, how would I go about obtaining a copy of AppleWorks that would work on it?
One more question. I used to use ClarisWorks and liked it a lot. I realize this may be a shot in the dark, but is there any way to find copies of ClarisWorks that would run on the latest operating system (on a Mac Mini) as well? Thanks for any info.
ETA: I do have an older Mac Mini as well from 2005. Would AppleWorks be installable from any of those older disks?
    Message was edited by: mitrailleuse

You won't be able to run any version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks 5 on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard because you would need Classic & neither Intel Macs or Leopard support Classic.
The AppleWorks included with the G4 Mac mini would be AppleWorks 6.2.9. That could be a problem if you have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files you want to open. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open these files but 6.2.9 will give an I/O error when you try to open about half of them. The rest will open without problems. There is no predicting which will open & which won't. If you run into this problem, you might consider getting a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 which will run very well on your new Mac mini & won't have problems with those files.

  • Brand new Mac Mini data transferred instore - what's my admin password?

Picked up my new Mac Mini today from Apple Store, data has been transferred from my windows laptop. They've set up a user account with the same password as my laptop.  I've tried to download Flash from Adobe - one of the main uses of the Mini will be for internet TV - and it's asking me for a password. My login & Apple ID  passwords aren't working. I don't know what the admin password is
I've since looked at a few other settings & I need the password there too.
I've only briefly used a Mac before, several years ago, so I'm very confuddled & frustrated.

  • Will my 30" apple display work on a new mac mini

I want to upgrade to an new mac mini and from my Powermac G5.. but I ave a 30" apple cinima.
Will it work on the new mac mini?
    Thanks
    Martin

Hi Martin, the Mini only has Thuberbolt for Displays...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface)
    Though that article says...
This makes the system backward compatible with existing DisplayPort hardware upstream of the driver. A single Thunderbolt port supports hubs as well as a daisy chain of up to seven Thunderbolt devices; up to two of these devices may be high-resolution displays using DisplayPort.[6] Existing Mini DisplayPort adapters for DVI, dual-link DVI, HDMI, and VGA are compatible with Thunderbolt, allowing backwards compatibility and no loss of functionality compared to Mini Displayport.
    I cant find any!

  • I can´t get @ to work at my new Mac mini

    Hi
I just bought and installed everything on my new Mac Mini 2012 from my old iMac and I chose Swedish as my language.
    My OS is Mavericks
I also connected my apple keyboard and everything works OK.
Except that when I try to write a e-mail.
I can´t write @ instead a get "TM" from holding down the alt-key and the other key (nr 2 key)
The keyboard works perfect with my old iMac.
Does anybody have a clue what I should do to get @ to work.
Maybe a Swede will know what happened ?
Any help would be much appreciated
    Cheers
    Hans
Ps. This was not written from my Mac mini  :-)

You need go to system prefs/keyboard/input sources and use the plus and add buttons to activate the Swedish Pro keyboard and then select that one in the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen.  Apple keyboards are printed with the Swedish Pro layout  (and not the "Swedish" one).

  • New Mac mini audio problem - beeping from audio output

    Hi Apple fans
Please help me. I recently purchased a new Mac mini from my local store. It's three-and-a-half weeks old as of today.
It's an i5 2.3 with 8 GB of corsair RAM.
I like to watch movies and TV on it and have the audio connected to an external amp and speakers via the headphone output.
After a reboot today I lost the sound through that output. All that I hear through it now is an electronic beeping, six notes, descending in pitch, repeating.
I have no idea what it is, other than annoying since this happened on a brand new computer. Not looking forward to the idea of losing my mini for a week as Apple figure it out, but it may be all that's left to do.
Maybe somebody here can help me out - anyone have an idea what's going on? I did an fsck -fy already, and there seems to be nothing wrong, based on that check. For completeness sake, I ran the sound over a USB sound card, and the beeping noise was not there, and sound worked fine. Ditto for the internal speaker - no weird noise there, this seems limited to the headphone out port. I've tried different cables, and even amps, and a set of small speakers without amp. The noise is there when using the headphone jack, and it's absent when using the wee internal speaker or USB-based sound. Please help?
I captured the sound on a video which I've uploaded. It's kind of jarring, so keep your hand on the volume button.

    Hi Pascal,
Certainly strange, but I have no ideas other than having it looked at by Apple.
