New Mac Mini is Slow, Upgrade RAM?

I have a new Mac Mini.  Considering the cost, it is surprisingly slow.  It has 2GB of RAM and I think that may be the problem.  What sort of speed increase can I expect with an upgrade to 8GB?  The main problem seems to be swapping and switching between applications.
Is a RAM upgrade likely to fix this issue?

Wait, what?  Someone actually listened to advice from someone who has been developing software for 33 years!?
Yeah, RAM matters if you're doing something like video editing or 3D graphics or even some sort of heavy Photoshop.  Or if you are running numerous Chrome tabs at once or something like that.  But it would have to be heavy use indeed if you're running into slowdown with 8 gigs.
What filesharing apps do, basically, is this: they have a buffer in memory, which might be a few megs.  They fill that buffer up, then they write that buffer to disk.  This is so it's not thrashing your disk all the time with tiny writes, but on the other hand, you wouldn't want it to download a gig before writing to disk: what if the computer crashed and you had to download all that data again?
Once you have 8 gigs, the MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK BY FAR is an SSD drive.  In fact, I have a Windows gaming machine with 4 gigs from 2007 that still runs most of what I need just fine, and an SSD just drove the performance out the roof.  You want a second larger drive on the thing, which is where you store non-speed-critical apps and all your data, and then a 100-200 gig SSD is where you put your OS and speed-critical apps, and loading it from there is far far faster than off of a conventional hard disk.  This isn't something you'd want to install yourself on a Mac Mini though.
Cheers!

  • My new Mac Mini Server - what upgrades?

    Hi,
I have just purchased a base model Mac Mini, and a copy of Server.
It is my intention to store all of our media on an external USB3 drive  (with music, movies and other stuff it's 3TB)  I have also connected an iMac (months old) and a 17" MBP to the server via Ethernet. All of this is going through a brand new Airport Extreme. The iMac will write files to a second USB3 drive.
My questtion is - what to upgrade?
I just installed more memory, now 8GB. But is it worth upgrading the 5400 rpm drive to a 7200? Adding an SSD?  I am unsure whether I will see any benefit, as the files will not be written internally to the Mini. Make sense?
I would also like to ask about settings - should the Mini be set to never sleep, and allow drives to spin down? Any help is much appreciated.  :-)
    Hugh

As Simon Slavin writes: learn about your server and profile your activities, and find the bottlenecks.  You've got some initial setup for your network probably including local DNS and maybe VPNs and firewalls and related gizmos, and a whole host of other Server.app and system and networking-related details to become familiar with.
There are lots of ways to spend money.   Buying hardware piecemeal or upgrading incrementally and particularly without a plan or goal, or upgrading some component that isn't your bottleneck, can both get expensive.   Have a plan.
There are massive lists of device bandwidths around, but you need to learn about and find the performance bottlenecks first.
If you're on a budget, also consider where you're going with your general configuration.  Your plan.  Your 3 TB is comparatively small by current standards.  That's the capacity of one current-generation disk.  If you're planning on increasing aggregate storage past that 3 TB value, then you might decide to pick different storage hardware for an incremental upgrade, for instance.   You might look to use a USB 3 multiple-disk-bay storage or a Thunderbolt multiple-disk-bay rack for storage, for instance.  Also consider whether you're adding storage or servers over time, as if you're not likely adding servers, then direct-attached storage is usually cheaper.  If you're adding servers or serving a whole lot of data via the local network, then you're getting into networking speeds and feeds.
Given you're on top-end WiFi gear, as a guess GbE Ethernet and either direct-attached or network-attached storage are probably going to be on your upgrade plan, when you get to that.  An internal SSD will be screaming fast here if you're getting throttled by the internal HDD (again: know your bottleneck!), but you're going to spend far more for an equivalent capacity of SSD than with the "rotating rust" HDD storage.
But yes, buy your mom or your spouse or your significant other a gift, and then spend some time learning about your new gear, how it works, and where its limits are.

  • New mac mini running slow

    08/26/2011
I just bought a new max mini with Lion, it is SLOW, SLOW SLOW.  What is wrong?

Me too! I just posted about this. I bought mine 1 month ago. It's too slow for the lion features. Please let me know if you hear anything. I will too.

  • Will new Mac Mini match/outperform my '04 PowerMac Dual G5/1.8?

    Hello,
For the past couple of years I've run a small video editing business using Final Cut Studio and my trusty PowerMac G5 1.8. I'm about to get out of that business, but want to still be able to edit using Final Cut from time to time. I want to be able to do all of the consumerish word processing, web, photo (iPhoto or Aperture), etc. I also play Unreal Tournament sometimes, but I'm not a hard core gamer.
My G5 -- with 3 GB RAM and the ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB DDR SDRAM video card -- has been fine for all this. My question is: would a new Mac Mini let me down for any of the activities above, relative to my G5? Would I be able to run all of my Final Cut Studio apps? And, would UT run at least as well?
    Thanks!

Agreed the new macmini's especially with the new Nvidia cards blow the old macs out of the water when it comes to games!
"Even with just 1GB of RAM installed, the new Nvidia graphics performed much better than the Intel graphics of the previous Mac mini. The older Mac mini couldn’t even run our Call of Duty test, and struggled to get just 5.6 frames per second in our Quake 4 test. The new Mac minis, with 2GB of RAM installed, were able to push through nearly 7 times as many frames per second in that test.

Also here's a chart comparing just about every videocard ever made so you can see that the 9400 card is faster:

p.s. Just make sure you get yourself at least 2GB of ram with it

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

  • New Mac Mini Intel Duyo Core...soooo slow??

Hi - I just replaced my G4 tower (which had a 1Ghz upgrade) for a duo core 1.66 Ghz Mac Mini. Since I have had the G4 for 5 years I was expecting to be happily surprised at how fast the new Mac Mini is....
But, man this thing is sooo slow. It takes longer to launch applications, I get the spinning wheel all the time, and often I just have to hold and click on the menu items and wait fro the menu to drop down. Could it be because I simply did a migration from the G4 and it would be faster to install the applications separately to the new Intel system? I don't run anything intensive, just MSWord, GoLive, Entourage, and Safari mainly.
I ran an xbench (www.xbench.com) report and ended up with a 48.
Maybe I was expecting too much from an $800 computer, but it is slower than my 5 year old desktop. In fact I think if there is nothing obviously worng with it I'll be sending it back and hold out for a G5 instead.
    Anyone had similar issues?

Word, GoLive and Entourage are PowerPC applications. On a Macintel, they will run under Rosetta emulation, which means that they will be slower than on a comparable PPC Mac (given the fact that the Core Duo is faster than about any G4, performance should be somewhat similar with standard apps - maybe still a bit slower with more intensive apps). And apps running under emulation tend to have higher memory requirements. If you run both three apps (Word, Entourage & GoLive) simultaneously, then the slowness you experience isn't very surprising. Adding RAM would probably make things a bit faster.
While some people feel comfortable with installing additional RAM themselves, the Mini is not exactly made to be user-serviceable, and if you have any doubt you should have it installed by Apple or an Authorized Service Provider. Moreover, because Apple will charge you a lot for RAM, I would suggest going to an AASP that might offer better prices. Some will even install third-party RAM for you (for a fee, but considering how expensive RAM can be when purchased through Apple, it could very well be worth it). You can find RAM on websites such as Crucial.com, and Crucial also have a Memory Advisor Tool which will select the right RAM for your Mini (they actually guarantee it will work with the Mini), as well as a lifetime warranty.
Or, since all of the applications you mentioned (except Safari) are not, and will not be Universal before some time, you could return the Mini and get a PPC Mac, maybe a G5 tower or a refurbished iMac (G5) ...

  • New mac mini slow?

Hi, is it normal that the new mac mini (i5 gheepst model, uphradet to 8 gb ram) is slower than my macbook pro 13, 2010 modell (2.4ghz core 2 duo)? When i try to open programs from dock it is very slow on the mini.. My mbp runs snow leopard, and the mini lion.. Is this normal?

Cheesypoop, I have exactly the same problem. I was using an old Mac Book black version and my girlfriend is using the newest MacBook Pro with Leopard. I have the feeling that both of them perform better than my new Mac Mini, same model and memory than you. The only difference with my other laptops is the OS, so maybe that's the problem. Lion is very nice but doesn't perform as well as it should.
Last night I was feeling frustrated when I was using the iPhoto's sliding option. I noticed the slide wasn't as smooth as it is in the laptops. Also I tried to play a HD movie while I was unzipping a file. Almost impossible with the spinning ball every little moment showing up!
(and by the way... anyone else has problems with a loooong delay after pressing right click over one of the icons at the dock?) It tooks up to ten seconds to show the pop up window! It only happens the first time I do it. After that it works as it should, almost inmediatly.

  • NEW Mac Mini i7 SUPER SLOW

I have been surfing the discussions for a while, and can not find a reason why. I have been using mac for about 10 years now, and I can not figure out why my new mac mini with the i7 chip is running deadly slow. I dont download anything that isnt on the iTunes library or the App store. It has loads of storage left.
    Here are my specs:
    OSx v 10.9.4
Proc: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Mem: 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have 600GB left of storage
When I boot the computer it boots really slow. Like 4 or 5 minutes from the time i press the power button until I can log in.
After logging in, if I click to open a program I can literally sit 4 or 5 minutes before its open.
It has done this since I opened the box and fired it up for the first time.
Are mac mini's normally this poor of performance? It drives us nuts as our old iMac was WAY faster than this and it was nowhere near as "powerful" of a computer.
If someone out there can explain what I can do I would sure appreciate any help.

  • G-Skill Ram with new mac mini

    Hey guys,
Has anyone had any experience with G-skill ram in the new mac minis?
I want to upgrade and there is a good deal on it, but don't want to buy if it wont work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Decided to upgrade from an old PowerBook G4, mostly for eyesight issues. Bought a new Mac Mini and hooked it up to an Apple A1267 Cinema Monitor. I cannot even figure out how to turn them on. Help please.

I am exhausted just getting to the point of being allowed to ask my question.  I recently decided to upgrade from an old PowerBook G4 that we have used for years, and am using now.  I bought a new Mac Mini and a reconditioned Apple A1267 Monitor that was working beautifully when hooked to a slightly newer PowerBook in the store.  Both the Mini and the monitor are plugged in, and attached to each other but I feel light a dolt.  I cannot even figure out how to turn them on or even get a power light to come on. Can someone help me?

How is the Mini coonected to the momitor?
Does the power button n the mini not work?

  • Dropping WiFi Connections after new Mac Min and Upgrade

First of all does anyone know why this discussion was archived when there was never a solution posted?

Secondly (why I found that thread among many others addressing the same problem). I received a new Mac Mini for XMas (cool, I needed it) which worked fine with my other computer and devices (2 iPads, 2 iPhones, 2 Win7 Laptops and 2 Win7 desktops) for a couple days, so I thought. Now all these devices got along very well until Mr. Mini comes along. Then I note wireless drops occasionally, it seemed to come back so I wasn't too upset, yet and decided to deal with it later and enjoy my vacation.
Now, after I allowed Leopard to do its upgrade (I had deferred that) I now have all the above devices dropping wifi and physical LAN connections as long as this Mini is powered on. I shut it off, Internet is blazing, I turn it on, Internet falters and screeches to a halt.
Since all my other devices have worked cooperatively for several years and this device comes along and crashed the party im pretty convinced its not my router or computers. I am not interested in trial and error here. i have many better more important things to do and this is Apples responsability to figure out. I am a very savy IT dude (career professional) and want to get to the bottom of this for everyone.
Soooo.... What changed? Why does this device kill my network when it is turned on (note, no alterations from out-of-the box to any network protocol or config.) and why does a thread (one of many) without a solution get trumped on by Apple?

Is it possible to upgrade my G4 PowerBook to the latest OS 10.4 and iLife06 with the SW provided and installed on new Mac Mini's with the Intel duo core? That would make purchasing a new Mac Mini a sweeter deal.

    No.
The disks that come with new machines are specific to that machine.
You will need Tiger and iLife '06 if you want to upgrade your PowerBook.

  • New mac mini internet is DEATHLY slow.

Hi, so yesterday I unboxed my new mac mini and set everything up. I opened up safari and started surfing away (my350z.com, youtube.com, facebook.com). All the sites I tried going to taake an eternity and a half to open; some will not load at all. At first I thought it was Safari, so I let chrome and friefox download all day. The speed is just as slow on each browser. A pc in the house loads everything just fine. The mini is in a different room from the router but not far from it by any means, maybe 15 feet. Any help is appreciated.

Try connecting to your router with a cable instead of wireless to see if the issue is with the wireless or not.

  • New Mac Mini slows my internet down to dialup speeds?

I recently purchased a new Mac Mini along with a new 27" Mac display.  As soon as I hooked it up and turned on WiFi, my in home interent connection (wired and unwired) slowed down to .019Mpbs!  I tried bypassing the router and hardwiring the Mac Mini directly to the modem, tried hardwiring to the Lynksys modem...still very slow.  As soon as I turn Wifi off on the Mac Mini, and remove the Mini from the network, all my other devices speed right back up to 2Mbps. I have several iOS devices in the home, a MacBook Air and a PC.
I have seen other's comments on other boards about bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I am using both of these, but manipulating these settings has not helped.
Would purchasing a new Apple AirPort AC 2 TB router/hardrive help?  Could my 2 year old Lynksys router (which works fine with everything else) be the problem?  Are there settings in the MacMini that need to be changed?
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jay

Ok, i was faced with this issue back in 2010 with my first Mac Mini. May i ask who your current internet service provider is? Mine was BT at the time and the router they provided was a 2wire! I am almost 100% sure that the router is at fault here! If it was your ISP that provided you with the router then call them to see if they can help. If you purchased it from a vendor then you will need to make contact with Linksys. What you need to ask for who ever it may be is a firmware update for your specific router in order for it to support a Macintosh. At the time of this this dilemma, BT could not help as my 2wire router did not have a firmware update available in order to support my Mac! I then made contact with Apple Support and they suggested i install a download manager. Please note that the DM manager i installed was tailored to fix this specific issue, other DM's most likely will not work! Was not the best solution but never the less this solved the problem! I wish i could tell you the name of this software but unfortunately i do not remember. However i am sure Apple Support can point you in the rite direction if you explain this scenario to them! I was on that network for a very short while, a couple of days i think so am not sure if this fix is a good longterm solution. However this may be the only solution you have unless you purchase a new router!
    Best of Luck!
