New Mac-Mini Lab!! Suggestions on Apps/Utilities ??

I'm setting up a new MacMini lab this summer at my school site.
Was wondering if the kind folk here could make some suggestions on software I should include on the computers.
Looking for freeware, or add-ons, or ultilies, or cheap software I could load on muliple computers.

I suggest you specify what curricula will be taught using the lab. That way, we can make relevant suggestions. The software should support the courses that will be taught. You don't simply want to "load up" the computers in the lab with a collection of freeware or shareware that doesn't support the learning to be accomplished or how the courses will be taught.
Likewise, you should specify how the lab will be managed. For example, will the computers be using Network-based accounts loaded from a server, or will accounts be defined on the computers themselves?
There's a good bit of thinking and planning that goes into setting-up and running an educational computer lab. Otherwise, you're likely to simply get a "wish list" that has nothing to do with the educational objectives of the lab.
For example:
• Take a look at Bombich Software. Mike Bombich offers some tips on maintaining computer lab environments. He also has a forum for computer lab managers .
• Another site to review is MacEnterprise.orf, in particular the "macosxlabs archives", from when the site was dedicated to eductional lab management.
• Don't forget to check the Apple Education site.
• You may find other solutions by searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker.

Yesterday I received a new mac mini (actually, a refurbished one that was originally released in July, sold from Apple). It downloaded a bunch of stuff when I did the software update, including an EFI Firmware update for the mac mini.
As far as I can tell everything ran just fine. However, I noticed in my applications folder (possibly under "utilities" though I may be wrong), an item with the circle/slash through it. It was the firmware update. I tried to open it and I received a message that the application could not be opened because of a problem when downloading it.
I deleted the file, hoping the software update would catch it again, no luck.
This is a new system and I'm hesitant to start deleting receipts, library files, etc., on my own.
I did unplug it and re-boot. No change.
I checked for firmware updates and looked at my system info and it looks like I have the current version.
I tried to manually download the latest firmware update for my system and it told me that this software wasn't for my system, although I'm sure I downloaded the right file for my system.
Why would that app have the circle/slash through it but looked like it may have run based on my system info?
Should I do anything else at this point or just leave it alone?
Thanks.I have a Mac Mini (mid-2011) with that same app circled out. I just left it as is in Utilities since I have no idea what it is and it's not hurting anything. Unfortunately, it won't show up in Installed Software.
You said you deleted the app file from Utilities. Is the Mac mini EFI Firmware Update.app still in your Trash? If so, why not just put it back and not worry about it?
As far as I know the firmware is installed. Check your System info by clicking -> About This Mac -> More Info....-> System Report. Check the Hardware Overview and the Boot ROM Version:. It should be the same as my Mac Mini below if the EFI 1.3 firmware was installed.

I just purchased a new mac mini and would like to use my old dell monitor. I tried a HD to VGA adapter converter,it plugs in, but nothing shows on the monitor. Any suggestions?
What do you mean by "HD to VGA adapter converter"?
Do you mean have an HDMI to VGA adapter connected the the Mini's HDMI port?
Or maybe you plugged n the the included HDMI to DVI adapter and then connected a DVI to DVI adapter?
In either case that will not work since VGA is analog and the Mini's HDMI port is digital only.
You need to purchase a mini displayport to VGA adapter. It plugs into the Mini's Thunderbolt port.

I'm sorry if this question has previously been posted. I tried searching the forums but was unsuccessful. I just purchased a new Mac mini 1.83 Ghz with Leopard.
*How can I transfer my files and applications from my powerbook G4 to the new mac mini.*
I'd like to transfer all my files and folders except for Tiger OS, and then reformat my PB G4 and sell it.
In the past I used CCC Carbon Copy Cloner, however I'm assuming that won't work in this situation.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.If your new mini is an Intel based system, then for the most part you really don't want to transfer your applications from the G4 PB to it, because at least some of your applications are going to be PPC software which is not native on the Intel system and therefore will run very slowly. Ideally, you would reinstall your software from disk or download, ensuring that were possible you replace non-native versions with fully Intel native (often described as 'Universal').
However, to answer your question, put the G4 PB into firewire target disk mode if it is capable of it (hold the T key down while booting it - a firewire symbol will appear on-screen if it can do this). Then connect it to the mini with a standard 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. Then on the mini, run the Migration Assistant (in Applications>Utilities) and follow the prompts. The system will then be able to see the PB as an external drive and allow you to migrate files, applications and settings.
Beware though that there can be issues because not only are you migrating from a G4 system to an Intel one, but also from Tiger to Leopard, meaning that you might find some software doesn't run correctly, or settings may cause instabilities.
Typically the best bet is to migrate your files using the migration assistant, but manually install software and set all the various configurations.
You're certainly right that you can't use CCC in this situation!! -
New Mac Mini - How do i reinstall my copy of Mountain LIon from App Store?

I just bought a new Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. I want to clone an older system drive that had been running Snow Leopard onto my new Mini and then upgrade to Mountain Lion (I tried Migration Assistant first, but it didn't work correctly and I don't want to mess with it again).
My question: once I have a working Snow Leopard install on my Mini, is it possible to upgrade back to the Mountain Lion OS it came with without paying for a new copy? How do I do that?
Thanks!It isn't just the hard drive - there is firmware built in that will prevent you from booting wih Snow Leopard. If you do a search here, you'll find many threads trying to install an earlier OS than what the machine came with all with the same answer (unless the Mac was built right around the time of a new OS being introduced, then it is possible to be booted from both OS's). In this case, you'd be trying to go backwards by 2 versions. Also see here:

And yes, if you use internet recovery and first erase the drive (available in Disk Utility within the recovery partition) and then reinstall the OS, it'll reinstall the OS on a blank drive and you can start over. If the machine is new, then Command + R during restart should automatically boot into internet recovery (connecting you to Apple's servers by showing a spinning globe while connecting); if the machine is a bit older, then Command + Option + R will boot into internet recovery. -
Boot Camp bug with new Mac Mini?
OK, so I have used Boot Camp now for years, on a variety of Mac platforms, and I have always been able to set it up and run Windows, including Windows 7 64 bit. That is, until I purchased my new Mac Mini i7 (non server version) with the WD 750GB internal, with 8GB ram. As the new models no longer offer a built in SuperDrive, I purchased a Pioneer external Blu-ray drive and have it connected via FireWire 800.
I have a brand new retail Windows 7 64 bit installation disc and have downloaded and burned the Windows 7 drivers to a CD.
I followed the instructions implicitly, but always hang on the reboot that should go into Boot Camp and begin the Window 7 install. Instead, I get the dreaded "Boot disc not found. Please insert a bootable disc and press any key" error, from which there appears to be no return.
Anyone have any ideas or is this just a known bug?This same message was displayed in my MacBook Pro yesterday when I partitioned the HDD, however in my case I hit the "Quit & Install Later" Option as I planned to install win 7 later. When I rebooted my Mac to my surprise it had defaulted to my DVD drive and could not find the disc (obviously, since I wasn't planning to install it). I remember that in SL this issue was not present. Ultimately, I had to hit the option key to boot back into OSX Lion and reset my Macintosh HD as my start up disk via system prefs.
As for your case I would suggest hitting the "option" key during start up and see if your Mac can recognize your Windows 7 disc. If it recognized select it with the keyboard arrow keys and when it is selected hit the "return" key. Then the Win 7 DVD should boot and then follow the instructions of the Windows 7 Installer.

As far as I know Bootcamp 4.0 is extremely buggy, yet I do think that OSX Lion overall is a very stable and snappy OS, I noticed that my system performance has not been that much impacted by it very much. My boot times went up by 3-4 seconds longer than SL and shutdown times went up by 1 sec only, as for app launch time they have remained the same. Hopefully further updates to OSX lion will address these and other issues.

New Mac Mini Intel Duyo Core...soooo slow??
Hi - I just replaced my G4 tower (which had a 1Ghz upgrade) for a duo core 1.66 Ghz Mac Mini. Since I have had the G4 for 5 years I was expecting to be happily surprised at how fast the new Mac Mini is....
But, man this thing is sooo slow. It takes longer to launch applications, I get the spinning wheel all the time, and often I just have to hold and click on the menu items and wait fro the menu to drop down. Could it be because I simply did a migration from the G4 and it would be faster to install the applications separately to the new Intel system? I don't run anything intensive, just MSWord, GoLive, Entourage, and Safari mainly.
I ran an xbench (www.xbench.com) report and ended up with a 48.
Maybe I was expecting too much from an $800 computer, but it is slower than my 5 year old desktop. In fact I think if there is nothing obviously worng with it I'll be sending it back and hold out for a G5 instead.
Anyone had similar issues?Word, GoLive and Entourage are PowerPC applications. On a Macintel, they will run under Rosetta emulation, which means that they will be slower than on a comparable PPC Mac (given the fact that the Core Duo is faster than about any G4, performance should be somewhat similar with standard apps - maybe still a bit slower with more intensive apps). And apps running under emulation tend to have higher memory requirements. If you run both three apps (Word, Entourage & GoLive) simultaneously, then the slowness you experience isn't very surprising. Adding RAM would probably make things a bit faster.
While some people feel comfortable with installing additional RAM themselves, the Mini is not exactly made to be user-serviceable, and if you have any doubt you should have it installed by Apple or an Authorized Service Provider. Moreover, because Apple will charge you a lot for RAM, I would suggest going to an AASP that might offer better prices. Some will even install third-party RAM for you (for a fee, but considering how expensive RAM can be when purchased through Apple, it could very well be worth it). You can find RAM on websites such as Crucial.com, and Crucial also have a Memory Advisor Tool which will select the right RAM for your Mini (they actually guarantee it will work with the Mini), as well as a lifetime warranty.
Or, since all of the applications you mentioned (except Safari) are not, and will not be Universal before some time, you could return the Mini and get a PPC Mac, maybe a G5 tower or a refurbished iMac (G5) ... -
Just bought a new Mac Mini (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo; 512MB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM). Innitially it seemed to run really quickly and smoothly. Then I started loading software on it like MS Office, downloaded Stuffit (new version). Now it takes forever to switch between applications, internet seems slower (but this may just be subjective). Once an app. is up and running it seems to be appropriately fast and responsive, but if I pause for too long, or change between open apps, it takes forever to repond.
Also, and this may be a separate issue, dragging and clicking, one of the beautifully intuitive things about Macs, doesn't seem to be consistantly intuitive anymore. Seems more and more like a PC! Maybe I'm just getting old and stupid, but I'm particularly having troubles with this in iTunes. I'll likely post about this over there too. Thanks for any suggestions.
JohnPerformance issues are often highly subjective, so as much as the system may seem to be deteriorating, it's possible that the sense it is doing so is based more on the resultant frustration from small changes in perceived speed resulting from such things as running non-native applications such as MS Office.
The previous poster is right, I think, in suggesting that you might try Neo Office instead of MS Office, since this will get you out from under the poor performance issues inevitably related to the use of Rosetta. In addition however, I think you might take this opportunity to do a little maintenance to ensure that the system is running as efficiently as possible.
The telling comment you make is that the system appeared to run well at first, but deteriorated in performance as you installed additional software. While it's possible you are reacting to a small subjective change, it's also possible that in installing additional software you have impacted MacOS. I would suggest you download a general-purpose utility such as YASU from www.versiontracker.com, and once installed, run all tasks (except deleting cookies). Particularly important in this situation is the prebinding task. Prebinding is the process which links applications and their libraries and updating it will make sure that this is correct. If it is not, you would typically find that applications are slow to open and can suffer brief 'stall-outs' as they are running.
YASU will also do some routine tasks such as repairing permissions, clearing log files and caches etc that can all be negatively impacted by installing software and updating the system, so the tasks involved can be beneficial in dealing with deteriorating performance.
The reboot after running YASU will take a little longer than usual - this is not a problem. Afterwards, once the system has rebuilt the cache files, you should notice slightly smoother performance, if not a little faster. -
Spotlight is not working on brand new Mac mini

I got an issue with two brand new Mac minis running 10.7.3 (11D50d):
Spotlight is not working. I'm only getting the Wikipedia-Search.
Here's what I did:
Installation:
- took the stock Minis and set up two users, admin and user (limited account)
- updatet the System
- installed manually: Adobe Reader X, Office 2011, Firefox 12, Flip4Mac, Perian, Cyberduck, Google Earth 6.2 (the installer without the updater), VLC 2
- installed using AppStore: CalendarBar, TextWrangler, Unarchiever
- copied a few documents (Word and Excel files) from a PC to the Desktop
Troubleshooting:
- tried to restart Spotlight by adding the entire harddrive to privacy using »Spotlight« within the System Preferences
- that threw an error "no priviliges"
- started the System from the recovery system (on an USB-thumbdrive) and repaired permissions
- that did not help
- tried to restart Spotlight through the Terminal, running the command: sudo mdutil -E /
- that command returned: No index.
- the tried: sudo mdutil -i on /
- returned: Error: unable to perform operation. (-400) No index.
- went the hard way
- unloaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
- erased the Spotlight folder: sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100/
- loaded the daemon: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
That made everything work fine until I did a restart of the System. After the mini restarted I was back at square one...
Does anyone have an idea how to fix this issue?
Apple support suggested to reinstall the system. Something I can't do right now, as people need to work on those computers and cannot take a tow hour break...Hi Ray Land,

The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support. I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7. After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7. When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices. I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.
Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

New Mac Mini thunderbolt to DVI adapter issues
Hi there,
I'm working on a new studio installation. We have a new Mac Mini that we're trying to connect up to a 30-inch Cinema HD display with DVI input. We have a Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt port and one of the USB ports (for power) on the back of the Mini, but despite our best efforts we aren't getting anything on the display. Going Mac - adapter - display results in about 7/8ths of the screen going white and displaying two green and misshapen Apple logos for about 5 seconds before it goes blank.
Ultimately we want to run it over quite a long DVI cable and currently have an Extron signal booster in place, which works perfectly from the Mac Mini's HDMI output through an HDMI to DVI adapter. However we're already using the HDMI output to feed another monitor.
So two questions really:
1. Can the Mac Mini feed two separate displays of different sizes? The 30-inch over Thunderbolt to DVI and another Apple 24 inch display over HDMI to DVI.
2. Does anybody have any experience with the Kanex or can you recommend an adapter that will work for us?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This whole process has been a very long headache!

Crazy thing is when we boot the computer with a different monitor attached and then switch cables to my monitor, my monitor works!
