New Mac Mini or iMac (late 2012) for Logic Pro?

Between these two specifically, which would be better for Logic Pro, and why?
The new Mac Mini (mid-tier) has a 2.3gHz i7, and the low-end iMac which has a 2.7GHz i5.  Both are quad-core.  The i5 is faster in clock-speed, but the Mini sports the i7, which has hyperthreading.
Can anybody offer any insight on which of these two computers would be better for Logic?

While this is not quite the answer you be looking for...
The 2011 Mac Mini Server, is in many ways the better bet for use with Logic because...
It has a 2.0Ghz i7... so slightly slower than the 2012 models..but it is the i7 version with 8 Cores.. so it still flies..
It comes with 2 x 500GB 7200rpm Hard Drives built in (Compared to 5400rpm Drives in the 2012 model)
Memory easily upgraded to 16GB for about $90 via Amazon..
..and yoi get a free copy of OS X Server, if should wish to use it at some point in the future... (The MMS comes with the Standard OS X installed and you have to run the add on server program to install OS X server so if you don't need the server stuff, don't run the Server installation software and you'll be running standard OS X  as normal)
USB2 instead of USB3 is about the only other important difference that matters for AudioExt Drive use but using the FW800 and Thunderbolt ports, via Tbolt to FW adaptors on the 2011 MMS removes the need for USB3 I find..
Othert than that the 2011 and 2012 models are pretty much the same...
But.. the real kicker is that Apple are currently selling refurbished ones (with full warranty) at $759.....  down from $999 originally...so they are quite the bargain..
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC936LL/A/refurbished-mac-mini-with-lion-serve r-20ghz-quad-core-intel-core-i7
I bought two of these originally and have never regretted it.. So much so that i just picked up another as a spare...
Got to be worth consideration... and at that price.. You could buy two... and use Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 to sync them together..
A Basic Guide to VEP5 and Logic info that i wrote, can be found here...

...add a screen and still save money conpared to buying a mid level iMac.... and you would be getting one **** of a punchy system for your buck.
Other than that suggestion..
In regards to the original question... Always go for the i7 models as hyperthreading adds 4 more (virtual) cores and that can really make a difference in performance compared to the 4 cores of an i5...

    Hello,
    AirPlay Mirroring
Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)

  • New mac mini and imac vs powermac G5 running FCP studio

I want to compare running the FCP suite on the new max minis and imacs that came out today vs what I am currently using:
Currently I am running FCP Studio on a Powermac G5 dual 2GHz with one gig of ram. I believe the frontside bus is 1GHz. I believe the stock video card isan ATI Radeon 9600 Pro (AGP 8X Pro) video card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM.
With this being said, is it safe to assume that the new entry level mac mini would surpass my G5 in terms of performnce in both video (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with128MB or 256MB of shared DDR3) memory processing (intel core2 duo 2GHz)?
If not would the two low end Imacs (using NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB of shared DDR3 memory) and processing power handle FCP studio better than my current powermac G5 setup listed above?
I am wondering because I spoke to a apple sales person who transfered me to a system engineer that said I'd have a slow time rendering video on FCP with the mac minis as well as the 2 low end imacs. This may be but Im wondering if it is still better than what I am using
I appreciate your opinions, but please only answer if you really know,
    Thanks!

For FCP/FCS I would not save on anything but will get the max what my budget allow. You will be always doing more and the workflow in FCS will entice you to open almost all apps in FCS concurrently to make use of the advanced features. I think that the new iMac are powerful enough to handle FCS, but once again, the extra dollars will save you alot of pain. FCS is a pro app and is not to be underestimated. Good luck.

  • Mac mini 2014 or 2012 for logic pro x

    Hello Guyzzzz
I am a beginner in Logic pro ( But not for a long time ) and was wondering if i should get a 2012 mac mini with a quad core I7 or if the new mac mini dual core I 7 should be powerful enough for logic ?
And for sure with 16Gb ram and Fusion drive 1 tb.
I want to take the new mac mini for the only reason that it can handle 4k ... so maybe in few month if apple released a 4K display I will be able to plug it
Thank you very much for your time and your help !

  • New Mac Mini won't recognize passcode for wireless keyboard

Just unboxed my new Mac Mini and have started the install process.  Made it to the wireless mouse ok, then the keyboard.  It finds the keyboard, gives me the passcode, then I enter it and press enter as requested, and nothing happens.  It just spins through the process again and again.  I have installed new batteries, turned all things on and off at random, and turned off bluetooth on all other devices that might be interfering.  Any ideas?

Take the batteries out of the keyboard
    Turn off the computer
Put batteries back in keyboard and hit the power button on the side
    wait 5 seconds
    turn on mini
go back through the setup process
    works every time for me

  • Does 2012 mac mini get very hot when using logic pro

does 2012 mac mini get very hot when using logic pro

Are you saying that your machine does or is it an enquiry before buying ? I use a 2011 server model - well, it does get hot over a period of time, but I've very rarely heard the fan kick in, its a surprise when it does. As far as I know the casing has been specifically designed to conduct heat, rather than having any fancy grilles and so on, being so small in size. I haven't found it to be cause for concern, if that's any help.

You should be able to open the box, plug in the power cord, your Display, Keyboard and Mouse, push the power button and start using it.
If not, then you need to return it or exchange it for one that works properly.

  • New Kontact 5 player and plug-in for Logic Pro 9.

Any hints on how to get Logic to recognize it and install as AU plug-in ?

A redo of the upgrade installation, double checked the AU file format; no help... got mad and shut it down. It was there when I restarted and brought up Logic 9 fresh. The opening splash was longer and I could it it recognize and load the plug-in.

Where can I buy a 3.0 usb hub (2008 version 1 USB 3.0 specification) for my new Mac Mini?

I'd go for the > USB 3.0 4-Port Hub Belkin, mostly because Belkin has never let me down.
    Also the > D-Link | DUB-1340 4-Port Superspeed USB 3 Hub, looks like a good choice.

  • Just setting up new mac mini however system seems stuck on Bluetooth at startup and not seeing new trackpad or keyboard both wireless?

My new mac mini seems stuck whilst launching for the first time - looking for bluetooth peripherals - they are a new trackpad and wireless keyboard - both in pair mode so I can't see what the issue is..Do I really need to find wired mouse and keyboard to set this up?

Hehehe... Yes, a freshly-booting Mac from the factory can get confused with all that wireless traffic. In the past I've been able to get new Macs to pair with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad by switching the keyboard/mouse/whatever off and then on again while the computer is attempting to find something to pair with. The computer will attempt pairing with the newly-activated device and otherwise pretty much ignore all the other Bluetooth chatter is sees.
That said, whenever I set up a Mac for someone, I always bring a USB keyboard and mouse with me. It makes the process faster and easier. I then set up their Bluetooth input devices later, using System Preferences.

  • Loving my new Mac Mini ;)

So I struggled with the decision, and having had a new Apple laptop every couple of years, it was a difficult one to make. But, since my 2010 MacBook Pro was just sitting on my computer desk collecting dust and I had started using my iPad as a laptop of sorts (via the Bluetooth Keyboard).. I decided to sell my 2010 MBP, get a new Mac Mini (base model with 500 gb hd and 4 gb ram), and I am absolutely loving it! I thought the lack of an optical drive might be weird still for me having used them for the past 13 years. But I find that it's not all that difficult, as long as you have alot of stuff in the iCloud backed up from your past, it's very easy. I used the backup I made from Time Machine on my old laptop (full system backup), and in an hour and 10 minutes, my 16,000 songs in iTunes showed up and everything was there, docs photos etc. So fast! I just went to work and came back and there it was. So I would highly recommend this system, especially if you have an iOS device to wag around. I'm using mine with the Apple Wireless Keyboard (new one) that I use with my iPad, too (easy to throw in the bag) and my Magic Mouse (had to disable zoom, it was driving me nuts, but perfect for this.) You can even pair it up immediately when u boot up your Mini for the first time. Took me 3 tries but it worked. Super fast for my purposes as the base model (i'm a writer.) Who needs a huge iMac or a laptop to sit and collect dust? I am a new Mac Mini fan and thank you for these wonderful support forums, too. Apple still rocks. Even in such a tiny box

Newbie first time Mac owner and I am loving mine too, long time windows user, made the switch to Apple a couple of weeks ago, mac mini i7 with 16GB ram, thunderbolt display, USB superdrive, I have found the transition to be fairly easy as I was dreading it at first!!!! now all set up as a media player and all working fine (no video problems either )
PS this forum is very helpful

  • Kernel Panics-Brand New Mac Mini

I am experiencing ongoing Kernel Panics on a new Mac Mini (purchased in July 2012). Running Mountain Lion, 8 gig RAM (Apple Branded). What I've tried to fix it:
Took to Apple Store, hardware test: Passed
    Reinstall of Mountain Lion
Uninstalled various 3rd party software including: LogMeIn, PS3 Media Server, Fuse, NTFS+ (don't recall exact name), DVD Fab.
Disconnected all external devices including External Hard Drives, DVD Drives, cameras etc.
They keep coming, pretty much daily (often 2 or 3 a day).

Big ole' me too here. Tried on 3 different Mac minis. First 2 were originally Mac mini servers that were reformatted and Base OSX 10.8.2 installed, no server. Lots of automatic reboots. Only app added was FM Server. These were installed from scratch, no user migration, no other apps installed. Last Mac mini was a straight non-server, brand new off the shelf, only FMServer installed (and FM Pro - not running). Getting reboots from kernel panic several times a day. All these Mac minis had SSD drives. I have Time Machine running, but its set to ignore the FM Server folder. FMS is set to back-up the DBs to a FW800 connected drive. Apple Display connected via Thunderbolt -not sure any of this matters. (Also repaired permissions, ran fsck, Safe Boot, etc...).
Don't know much about tracing the reason for a kernel panic but saw this near the top:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: java
It's been happening for months, been banging my head aginast the wall thinking it was something I've done...

  • Problem with USB speakers and new Mac Mini

I have a USB sound system consisting of a pair of Harman Kardon soundsticks and a woofer from probably 10 years ago (bought and used originally with a Mac). I have tried driving it my new Mac Mini. It works fine for about a minute; then the music stops. Here's what I've tried to diagnose the problem:
    1. The problem does not occur when these speakers are driven from my Macbook Air (about 3 years old).
    2. The OS and iTunes software is up to date on both machines (10.9.5 and 12.0.1.26).
    3. It does not depend on which USB port I use on the Mac Mini.
    4. Using a port on a USB extender on the Mac Mini does not solve the problem.
    5. The iTunes Preference settings are the same on both machines.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:

  • I have bought a new imac late 2012 and I want to wipe clean my 2008 mac and install Mountain Lion on the old computer for my kids to have

I have bought a new imac late 2012 and I want to wipe clean my 2008 mac and install Mountain Lion on the old computer for my kids to have.
What do I need to do?

Boot your Mac from the System Install DVD that came with it, and erase the HD using Disk Utility. Then, reinstall the OS from the disc. Give the disc to your kids since it must always accompany the Mac it came with.
After the OS installation is complete and the Mac restarts to begin its new owner setup procedure, just shut down the Mac. Your kids can take it from there.
If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store, you cannot transfer it. The Apple ID you used to purchase it is required to maintain and / or reinstall the OS. Unless you want to supply your own Apple ID to your children for their use, they must purchase their own copy of Mountain Lion using their own Apple ID.
If they do not already have an Apple ID and you want them to have Mountain Lion, you will need to create one on their behalf. This does not change the above procedure - just give them the Apple ID and password you create in addition to the Mac and its discs.

    8gb ram
    etc
witch of these two machines are better for a home studio?im looking mostly for better performance
im using mostly: logic, pro tools, many samples and virtual instruments simultaneously

    thank you

Always keep an eye on 'More like this', the column adjacent to your initial post.  You'll often find answers and positive leads to your questions there.
Otherwise, as few people have had the opportunity to really test the new iMac it becomes a question of looking at where the improvements are ... or conversely what facilities have been lost.   In fact this latter point will be of greatest help to you; things like the missing CD/DVD slot and some ports.
I shall go for the mini next time; far more flexible in terms of upgrading.
Lot of reading for you to do.
