New Mac mini w/2.0 processor 1gig of ram getting REALLY HOT

o I just picked up this mini on Saturday, and it seems to be running at an idle at 58c ... is that normal for a mini? I know my imac runs around 35-38c...
Fully loaded (two terminal windows with yes >/dev/null) I get up to 84c!!!!!!
It's the 2.0gig mac mini with 1gig ram and 120gig hard drive.
If I crank the fan speed up to 5501 RPM's, then at idle I can get 38c, and 67c under a load using SMC control..... Is this normal for a mini, to get this darned hot?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I would reiterate what Doug has said - that unless your system has shut down unexpectedly (it goes into protective shutdown if it overheats) then you don't have an overheating problem and you have no cause for concern.
The best advice is to stop monitoring system parameters that are of relatively little merit to monitor and where the results you see are both poorly understood and also easy to misinterpret out of context! Laptop systems typically run rather hotter than Mac minis and have less internal air space, smaller fans, less ventilation slots and thus lesser heat-dissipation capabilities than Mac minis - yet people have been using these sort of systems for years without heat-related failures.
As long as your mini is used in a well ventilated space, with a moderate ambient air temperature, the system has more than adequate capacity to cool itself sufficiently. The fan will run up to full speed under heavy CPU load and is certainly capable of shifting enough air.

I thought I had a defected newly purchased keyboard. I pulled out my older wireless keyboard, and the same thing happened. It must not be the keyboard if it happened to two different keyboards. I have a habit of restarting my computer, when things don't work, I find it helps, and sure enough, everything works. Today, it happened again. Does anyone know what is causing this to happen?

  • I cannot install Lion to a backup drive for my new Mac Mini

I just bought the new Mac Mini with an i7 processor last week. I wanted to format a backup drive for it. When I tried to use the Lion Recovery partition on the new Mac Mini, I keep getting an error message that says it's incompatoble with the current model.
I also tried to use the Lion thumbdrive I purchased from Apple to see if that can be used, but it also give me the incompatible message.
Is there a special version of Lion that's only for the new Mac Mini's?
    Any help is appreciated!

Mac mini (Mid 2011), MacBook Air (Mid 2011): Use Lion Recovery instead of OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive
    Last Modified: September 01, 2011
    Article: HT4905
    Summary
Learn about using Lion Recovery or the built-in OS X Lion recovery partition rather than OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive with computers released after OS X Lion.
    Products Affected
MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011), MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011), MacBook Air (Mid 2011), Mac mini (Mid 2011)
Use Lion Recovery to restore Mac computers released after OS X Lion. If you attempt to use the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, a message will appear stating that you cannot install this version of OS X on your computer. This is correct behavior to make sure you install only the correct and most up-to-date version of Mac OS X on your computer.
Note: You can also use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant on your Mac to create a bootable image to make sure you recover the correct version of OS X Lion. To use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, you need to have your own USB drive.
    Additional Information
If you have a network connection, you should receive the appropriate version of Mac OS X when using the built-in Recovery HD partition on Macs running Lion.

  • IPad sync fails on new Mac Mini

Im trying to get my iPad 1 to sync with a new Mac Mini, but whenever I choose "transfer purchases" it gets stuck at "waiting for sync to start." I've restarted all sorts of things and tried to sync both over wifi and USB.  It simply won't start, and I've tried for a couple days.  I even tried erase and sync, but it still wouldn't start the process.  Any ideas?

    No ideas on this one?

  • Problems playing dvds on my new mac mini

I'm trying to play a dvd on my new mac mini & whenever I hit the play button I get error: -70025. I've checked the disc for scratches etc... but all seems fine there. Does anyone know what that error is about or have any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

All i can think of is running a cleaning disk in your Mini's drive. I'd be surprised if the mini needed cleaning since it's so new but you never know. Another question that comes to mind is if that particular DVD has some copy protection that prevents it from being played in computers. Some music CDs have that type of protection.

  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor on the new Mac Mini Server

Does the Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor on the new Mac Mini Server support 3D Monitors?
I'm in the process of purchasing a 3D LED Monitor (27" S27A950D Series 9 LED 3D Monitor) and would like to know if it will be fully compatible with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor that came with the Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011).
Will it be possible to play 3D Games and watch 3D movies with this graphics card?
Also, does the new Mac Mini Server come with 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Core Processor?

  • New Mac Mini thunderbolt to DVI adapter issues

    Hi there,
I'm working on a new studio installation. We have a new Mac Mini that we're trying to connect up to a 30-inch Cinema HD display with DVI input. We have a Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter that plugs into the Thunderbolt port and one of the USB ports (for power) on the back of the Mini, but despite our best efforts we aren't getting anything on the display. Going Mac - adapter - display results in about 7/8ths of the screen going white and displaying two green and misshapen Apple logos for about 5 seconds before it goes blank.
Ultimately we want to run it over quite a long DVI cable and currently have an Extron signal booster in place, which works perfectly from the Mac Mini's HDMI output through an HDMI to DVI adapter. However we're already using the HDMI output to feed another monitor.
    So two questions really:
    1. Can the Mac Mini feed two separate displays of different sizes? The 30-inch over Thunderbolt to DVI and another Apple 24 inch display over HDMI to DVI.
    2. Does anybody have any experience with the Kanex or can you recommend an adapter that will work for us?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This whole process has been a very long headache!
    Many thanks,
    Josh

  • New Mac Mini and iMovie6, & iDVD

    Hi
I was wondering if someone can answer these questions for me. I have a 12" powerbook and iMac 800mhz power pc G4 (lampshade kind), and I have been editing movies in iMovie and creating DVD with iDVD. But it's getting a bit slow.
I was thinking about getting the new Mac Duo core mini 1.83 GHZ with 2 gig of Ram to use as editing bay (iMovie) and to create DVD using iDVD.
Is the new Mac Mini good enough for that? Has anyone encounter any problem with previous mac mini using iLife? I don't edit a lot, maybe twice a year, 1 1/2 hour or 2 hour project. I already have external monitor (viewsonic) and apple keyboard and mouse.
or is it entirely better to go with iMac 24 inch.?
    Any thoughts?
    Alex

In context, the current $799 Mac mini has very similar overall performance to my G5 2.0 dual processor power mac, bought in October 2003, so while the drive is slower (not all that critical in video editing work since 5400rpm is certainly sufficient) a mini will perform notably better in iMovie, and render to iDVD much faster than your present 800MHz PB. Certainly, comparing the performance of my 800MHz TiBook in iMovie and Final Cut Express against even the older 1.5GHz G4 mini with IGb RAM, the mini was far smoother and more responsive to use.
There's no doubt that a 24" iMac would provide a faster, richer, environment in which to work, and if your budget would extent to that system it would seem a poor choice not to opt for that, but as has been said many, many times in these discussions, it's also worth bearing in mind that the mini's performance and capabilities are not defined by it's size. A Mac mini is far more powerful than merely for basic computing needs!

  • New Mac Mini+Superdrive+windows 7 - Will it work?

Looking at updating my father to the Apple world, thought I would get him a Mac Mini, and use Bootcamp to install Windows.  As the new Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive (I have a MacBook Air Superdrive), if I use the external one to install Windows, will it install properly?  Does the Mac Mini have the drivers for the SUperdrive?  Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

  • New Mac Mini, iMac, or old Mac Pro for Pro Tools?

I asked this in another thread, but just want to get more input from older Mac Pro users from different years (2008-2010..)
I need to upgrade my Mac and am wondering what experiences everyone has had with different options for running Pro Tools and other professional audio applications.
The FW800 port on my iMac recently broke, and rather than spend a lot on getting it fixed I've decided to just sell it to someone who doesn't need firewire and upgrade.
I'm trying to decide between a newer iMac (3.1 or 3.4 GHz) with thunderbolt and USB 3 (but no FW), a new Mac Mini, also with thunderbolt and USB 3, or a somewhat older Mac Pro (2008-2010) with at least a 2.8GHz processor. Any thoughts from those of you who have used any of these, or who know more about computers in general than I do? Thanks.
Another option a friend recommended was looking for a 2011 iMac as they have both Firewire and Thunderbolt, since my audio interface runs via FW.
    Thanks!

Might want to ask this on a ProTools forum as well.
    fwiw I have a 4 core MacMini Server w 8GB RAM and a 2008 MacPro 8 core w 16GB.
The Mini is used as a general file and A/V server when not specificially tasked with Final Cut Suite efforts.
Unless I have serious Compressor processes running (e.g. converting h.264 to an editable format) that draws on the full cores, the mini can do a good job keeping up with the MacPro.
What the mini won't do is take 3rd party cards or drive multiple large monitors but for digital audio it ought to be fine with thunderbolt drives.
    Good luck.

  • New Mac Mini Server, two Hard drives, Can I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,

    My mac mini is damaged?

I'm seeing same problem - new mini mac dropping internet randomly during the day.
I bought the 1-year Mac program where I can go in for classes.  I'll schedule one to talk through this.
I'll also do all the software upgrades.
Seems like a pretty general problem.  Maybe it'll get some attention.
My wife hates the mac as a result of these problem.
Most of the time we end up cycling power on the router downstairs, which is a 2-5 minute fix, that's a pain 3 times daily.

  • GOT MY NEW MAC MINI THIS MORNING

I love it, it's going to be so sweet. I"m installing updates now, and I checked the specs...i got a 1.5ghz ppc g4 processor!

So, what are your plans for the new Mac mini?
I find that this machine is particularly good for cramped spaces. It makes an excellent RV computer, IMHO, because you can setup a miniature workstation hooked up to a telly. Kind fun.

  • Brand New Mac Mini (Intel 2.53 320HD 4gb - January 2010 - new Airpot Extrem

I purchased a new Mac Mini Intel Duo 2.53 320HD 4gb and a new Airport Extreme, new iWorks, wireless Mouse and keyboard, ipod touch 8gig and have a iphone 3gs 16g already few months old. My Mac Mini keeps trying to install something in System/Library/CoreServices and halts permission check until Disk Utility saying that it has been altered and will not repair. I did notice in that directory everything about Apple Remote Desktop, including ARDAgent / AppleVNCServer.bundle which contains curtainlock, kickstart, remote desktop.incs, RemoteDeskoptAgent, lock.jpg, networkUser.tiff, Lockscreen, lockscreekLeopard386, VNC Gues, sshHelper, writesettings, VNC PrivilageProxy, AppleVNCServer, Screensharing, Upgrade User, UserAccountUpdate, WorkflowServerRunner, Ticket Viewer and so on. My new Apple Extreme Dual Band, paid $179 for it, shows another base station when trying to re-set to factory settings that doesnt match mine, and I have no other apple stuff in my apartment. Also, before I can even enter the password and set it up, the Amber solid light turns green, and thanks me at the end for setting up my wireless with a usb printer. I don't have, nor ever setup a printer, no in my sharing, and under Airport at the top of my screen listing all the networks in my area also has a second section listed Devices - and it shows a hpsetup under my computer's airport.
Would buying techtools deluxe help fix this problem? Or norton Security for mac? or use the PGP Corporation Whole Desktop security Apple recommends to encrypt everything and re-install my operating system after I do a full erase with a one zero clean on both empty and disk02 - Machintosh HD?
Also my iphone 3gs is acting strange. It says the AT&T firmware is 5.11.7 and 3.1.2 (7D11) but the actual model number has changed from whatever M..L/A to now just M...LL (no /A).
    Thanks for any help.

Actually, he has 2GB of RAM and a 2.26 GHz processor.
I'd suggest trying it. Worst thing that could happen is your system is too sluggish to use, in which case you reformat the partition (or remove if you want) and install a different, more compatible version of Windows. But personally, I could see it working well for you. However, if you're using an Apple Wireless keyboard and Mighty/Magic Mouse, you may run into some problems with pairing, however, this is a Boot Camp driver problem and can be fixed fairly easily.
I can't see it creating any problems, I'm running Windows 7 32 bit on my Mac mini with only 1GB Ram and a 1.66 GHz processor. And it's running really smooth. I should also note that Windows 7 uses far less resources than Vista, thus it runs a little better on slower machines than Vista did.
