New Mac Mini Wireless Internet - Slow, Disconnects frequently

Hi all,
I've been doing some research and have read related posts about this, but I thought I'd share my specific situation to see if I could have any light shed on it.
As a long-time happy Mac Mini user, I was excited when I picked up one of the new 2009 mac mini models and ditched my old G4 mini.
My wireless connection on the old mini was never very fast, and I was extremely pleased when I first started up the computer and my internet FLEW! I thought, 'Finally!! I have fast internet!'
It was as fast as it had ever been, just as if it were plugged directly into an ethernet cable.
Well, that lasted only a couple of days. For several months since then, I have frequently been having connection issues. It is consistently slower than it ever was during those first several days, and at times, it is continuously disconnecting and reconnecting.
Needless to say all of this is very frustrating. My connection is to a D-link wireless router with a standard WEP key.
I haven't changed any settings since the internet was blazing fast those first couple of days, and I'm using my Macbook wired to ethernet at the moment, and it is perfectly fine.
Thanks for any insight or to anyone for pointing me in the right direction on this.

Very close to the same thing happened to me:
-- I also stepped up from a G4 (iMac) to a 2009 Mini.
-- I also saw a big improvement in my wireless connection.
-- I also saw a big drop in speed, reliability, etc. (Software Update seems to hang, etc.).
-- I am also very frustrated.
Slight differences:
-- Drop in speed happened between the first and second time I booted up -- just a few hours!
-- I'm on an Airport Extreme network (old domed UFO-style base station)... WEP key, etc.
-- My iMac is still a-ok... just a few feet from the Mini, so I don't see how it could be a location-related problem.
Have tried usual tricks (rebooting computer and router, etc) and a couple of things found on similar threads. Not a bit of difference yet.
So advanced thanks for any forthcoming help from me, too...

Just bought a new mac mini, wireless keyboard, and track pad. My track pad will not synch. All advise I have been given is to change items in the setting menu, but I cant because I still have to get through the setup!!

The power button for the Trackpad is on the right hand end of the battery case. Press that button to initiate the pairing process. On the top of the Trackpad just above the power button is a tiny green light (you probably cannot see it unless it is lighted). That light will indicate ehther or not the Trackpad is discoverable. If the Trackpad has discoverable the green light will blink on and off. If it does not pair within 3 minutes you will have to press the power button again to re-initiate the pairing process. Once your Trackpad has paired, you can just leave it on and it will pair automatically when you reboot your Mac.
If you are having problems pairing, try turning off any other Bluetooth devices within 30 or so feet of your Mac mini. That includes other Computers, iPhones, iPads, etc. that may be in the area. Once your Trackpad has pairedwith your mini, you don't have to be concerned about other Bluetooth devices.
One other hint, I find that although the Wireless Trackpad does not eat batteries as fast as the Magic Mouse it still uses more than the Wireless Keyboard. It is a good idea to keep a supply of AA batteries around. I have used Apple's Rechargable batteries, but found they did not last that long before needing to be recharged. I have had the best battery life from Duracell Quantum batteries.

  • My brand new mac mini is super slow

Dear Apple people of the world,
I just bought a new entry-level Mac Mini to supplement by 2010 Apple Air. It's the basic model (2.5 GHZ Dual Core Intel core i5, 4gb memory, 500 gb hard drive, intel hd graphics 4000, os x mavericks). As soon as I got it I upgraded to os X 10.9.5 and migrated data from my Apple Air onto the Mac Mini, so that the hard drive is about half full with word and pdf documents. I also installed Chrome, Evernote, Dropbox and a few other apps.
Problem: The Mac Mini is absurdly slow. Even if I have all apps and windows closed except for one or two, it takes forever to open new apps, sometimes iTunes takes a minute or two to launch, sometimes things freeze, and so on. I can't figure out why it's so slow. Loading emails, reading emails, composing emails, all takes place with significant lag. And if I have more than a few apps open, forget about it, I may as well make a coffee while I try to open a new program.
Any idea why this might be the case? Anything I can do to fix it? The problem is complicated by the fact that I bought it last week in the USA and am now in Gwrmany, so I can't easily exchange or return or upgrade it.

  • NEW Mac Mini i7 SUPER SLOW

I have been surfing the discussions for a while, and can not find a reason why. I have been using mac for about 10 years now, and I can not figure out why my new mac mini with the i7 chip is running deadly slow. I dont download anything that isnt on the iTunes library or the App store. It has loads of storage left.
    Here are my specs:
    OSx v 10.9.4
Proc: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    Mem: 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have 600GB left of storage
When I boot the computer it boots really slow. Like 4 or 5 minutes from the time i press the power button until I can log in.
After logging in, if I click to open a program I can literally sit 4 or 5 minutes before its open.
It has done this since I opened the box and fired it up for the first time.
Are mac mini's normally this poor of performance? It drives us nuts as our old iMac was WAY faster than this and it was nowhere near as "powerful" of a computer.
If someone out there can explain what I can do I would sure appreciate any help.

  • Connecting new mac mini to internet

I have just ordered a new mac mini to run alongside my PC which is connected to broadband at the moment. Do i need an external modem to connect my new mac to broadband?

You don't provide any information about how your other computer is connected to broadband. The connection could be via either cable or DSL, and depending on the type of "Modem", there may be either more than one ethernet outlet, or some "Modems" function as wireless routers as well. Broadband doesn't really need to be "MOdulated or DEModulated (hence the name for Modems) it is essentially digital signal to begin with, but the old term is still applied to the appliance that hooks to the cable. If you do not have a cable between the computer and the Modem, it is a sure sign that it has wireless router capabilities. If it does have a cable it still may have wireless capabilities, but you would have to check the literature that came with it. Some ISP's offer wireless capability as a "perk" to get you to sign up, but if you have just one computer they sometimes perform the easiest installation - which is an ethernet connection (Cable) between the Modem and the computer.

  • New Mac Mini - wireless keyboard issue

I bought a new mini and wireless keyboard and mouse. The mouse works but the keyboard is not being recognized. Any help? It is a new mini so I cannot get onto the preferences and I do not have another mac keyboard.

Scrounged a Microsoft USB mouse and plugged into Mac Mini. Allowed me to click through to new pane telling me I had no keyboard connected, please connect one. Well, that's progress.
Took a number of attempts. Eventually it saw and displayed my KB's Bluetooth ID, but then failed. It was almost "reluctant," like it was trying to get out of work. This is not behavior I am used to from non-sentient digital equipment. Unless... never mind.
With a functioning KB and mouse I finally was able to open Lion and System Preferences and discover the DEFAULT trackpad settings DISABLED clicks! I assume Apple has a method to what seems madness. Otherwise those Stuxnet saboteurs have been moonlighting in Cupertino to devise an out-of-the-box fail.
I didn't start out an Apple fanboy but since 2007 their products have turned me into one. Yet I was so disappointed today I planned to return the Mac Mini, KB and Magic Trackpad tomorrow. My Apple Store is nearby. I kinda knew that USB end run would work, but I was insulted they made me resort to such a kludge.
I cannot imagine why that initial Bluetooth pairing procedure hassle remains without some kind of service bulletin addressing known problems. So many people have commented on it over these boards. I flatter myself to conclude Apple does so many other things right that once in a while things get past them.
As usual, now that I command Lion OSX on an HDTV from the couch, I'll be keeping this Mac Mini as part of my home's Apple suite, crossing my fingers against Bluetooth issues.

  • My new Mac mini is very slow

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Mac Mini is running slow

I am not sure what is going on, my new mac mini runs pretty slow some times, and seems to struggle with simple tasks. Right now I only have 4gb or ram and even when I have no applications open it seems to be almost all used (>3.5Gb). Is this normal or is there something running sucking up my performance?
I can start going through the steps that Linc Davis has posted on other similar threads but I have no idea how to make any sense of what the output logs tell me.

  • New mac mini internet is DEATHLY slow.

Hi, so yesterday I unboxed my new mac mini and set everything up. I opened up safari and started surfing away (my350z.com, youtube.com, facebook.com). All the sites I tried going to taake an eternity and a half to open; some will not load at all. At first I thought it was Safari, so I let chrome and friefox download all day. The speed is just as slow on each browser. A pc in the house loads everything just fine. The mini is in a different room from the router but not far from it by any means, maybe 15 feet. Any help is appreciated.

Try connecting to your router with a cable instead of wireless to see if the issue is with the wireless or not.

  • New Mac Mini slows my internet down to dialup speeds?

I recently purchased a new Mac Mini along with a new 27" Mac display.  As soon as I hooked it up and turned on WiFi, my in home interent connection (wired and unwired) slowed down to .019Mpbs!  I tried bypassing the router and hardwiring the Mac Mini directly to the modem, tried hardwiring to the Lynksys modem...still very slow.  As soon as I turn Wifi off on the Mac Mini, and remove the Mini from the network, all my other devices speed right back up to 2Mbps. I have several iOS devices in the home, a MacBook Air and a PC.
I have seen other's comments on other boards about bluetooth keyboard and trackpad.  I am using both of these, but manipulating these settings has not helped.
Would purchasing a new Apple AirPort AC 2 TB router/hardrive help?  Could my 2 year old Lynksys router (which works fine with everything else) be the problem?  Are there settings in the MacMini that need to be changed?
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jay

Ok, i was faced with this issue back in 2010 with my first Mac Mini. May i ask who your current internet service provider is? Mine was BT at the time and the router they provided was a 2wire! I am almost 100% sure that the router is at fault here! If it was your ISP that provided you with the router then call them to see if they can help. If you purchased it from a vendor then you will need to make contact with Linksys. What you need to ask for who ever it may be is a firmware update for your specific router in order for it to support a Macintosh. At the time of this this dilemma, BT could not help as my 2wire router did not have a firmware update available in order to support my Mac! I then made contact with Apple Support and they suggested i install a download manager. Please note that the DM manager i installed was tailored to fix this specific issue, other DM's most likely will not work! Was not the best solution but never the less this solved the problem! I wish i could tell you the name of this software but unfortunately i do not remember. However i am sure Apple Support can point you in the rite direction if you explain this scenario to them! I was on that network for a very short while, a couple of days i think so am not sure if this fix is a good longterm solution. However this may be the only solution you have unless you purchase a new router!
    Best of Luck!

  • Bluetooth lags on new Mac Mini w/ Wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a new mac mini (the basic model) and attached it via HDMI to a HD TV. I bought the mac wireless keyboard and magic trackpad to go with it. Everything works except that both the keyboard and mouse are consistently slow. Not quite to the point of un-useable, but very noticeable.
I've read that it might be radio interference with the bluetooth signal. To test this, I put my Macbook Pro right next to the new mac mini (while it and the screen were on) and paired the keyboard and mouse to the macbook pro. Everything was super fast, no lag - so that leads me to think the problem is with the Mac Mini. I've tried playing with all the bluetooth options, to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? I've also tried attaching a bluetooth magic mouse and had the same slowdown. Nothing seems to affect the lag, it's very consistent and probably around half a second between keystroke or mouse movement and it's reflection on the screen.
    Thanks,
    -Mike

    Hey All,
I've got the same issue with my Mac Book Pro and a new Samsung LED 3D TV. Its connected through a DVI out from the mac to a gold HDMI adaptor, then to HDMI into the TV. I've used this set-up with my last HDTV which was a Sharp LCD, and there was no lag and no issues.
I noticed that for me, the lag appeared on the TV, but not on the laptop, so I thought it might be the connection (If I went right to HDMI instead of an adaptor maybe it'd be better) but I don't think it is given that the last TV worked fine.
I then went to my display settings in the control panel on my mac and changed the refresh rate from 24 Hertz to 60 Hertz (NTSC) on the TV and the issue has pretty much completely dissappeared. Not sure why that was the default, but I imagine certain video and other media will play even smoother as well!
    Woo hoo!
Hope you all figure this out too!

  • Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?

Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

  • TS4456 New Mac mini and older wireless keyboard connect, but don't pair

In setting up my brand new Mac mini, the wireless mouse paired with no problem, but I'm having trouble with the keyboard. I am using an older mouse and keyboard from my previous mini, which is completely shut down. The keyboard shows as being connected to the computer, but when I enter the code and press Return, the code disappears and nothing else happens. After a while the code reappears and I repeat the process with the same results. After several attempts, nothing else happens. I've tried rebooting twice, checked the keyboard batteries, made sure the keyboard light is blinking to show it's discoverable, but I can't move past this screen. I don't know what else to try. Please help!

Hi, it isn't paired to another device is it?
    Might see this...

  • Connecting new mac mini and a pc to internet

I have ordered a new mac mini and airport express to connect it to my broadband connection. I have a none wireless pc already connected to the DSL. This is a usb connection to the pc.
Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port? Will this work and would the Mac then pick up the connected printer?

Can I connect the dsl to the airport express usb port and then connect my pc to the free ethernet port?
No, this will not work. To use an AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station, you will need a DSL modem that has an Ethernet port. The reason is that the USB connection requires a software driver to be installed on your computer. Since it's not possible to install drivers (Mac OS, Windows or otherwise) on the AirPort Express because it's not a computer, you'll need to use the Ethernet port. I would recommend you visit the AirPort Express forum. There are some knowledgeable people there who can help you find a new modem that has Ethernet and get everything configured for you.
