New Mac old settings

Hi! I just placed an order for a new iMac on the Apple store. Currently I sync my iPhone, iPad and iPods with my PowerBook G4. Once the new Mac arrives I plan to sync my iOS devices with it, I understand that there is a migration or setup assistant that will transfer all my settings from the old Mac to the new one.
Are there any tips or special precautions I must take? Should I use a USB cable, Firewire or use wi-fi?
Thanks,
Cesar

  • New Mac - old programs cant run due to unsupported PPC.

Just bought my Mac10.7 and notice that all of my old programs such as Office, Photoshop, etc aren't readable.  I get a 'program not supported for ppc'.  Is there anything I can do to make these programs work on my new mac? Thanks.

Office 2008, and 2011 are able to run in Lion.
Neo Office, OpenOffice, iWork, and Google Docs are also all alternatives that work as well.
Photoshop CS4 and later work with Lion with some limitations.
For a full listing of compatible applications, and what options you have, read my two tips:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
    - at the end discusses if you have a dual-boot Snow Leopard compatible Mac, as well as Snow Leopard compatibility.

  • New Mac/Old Mac/Phone/Ipad

I just bought a new apple mac.  I want to transfer my itunes apps, ring tones, music.  Will I lose the purchased information on my phone if I sync it with the new mac?

You should first copy your iTunes library from the old Mac to the new Mac. Then you won't lose anything. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you have other data to move from the old to the new computer you should use the Migration Assistant: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5872
And finally, if you have a Time Machine backup of the old Mac you can use it to restore everything from the old Mac to the new Mac.

  • New Mac, Old Mac, Time Capsule, Old Airport express

    Hi,
I have a couple of questions which I should be grateful if someone could answer:
I currently have an "old" mac (latest version of 10.4) and an "old" airport express (latest updates) connected to a modem which forms a basic wireless network with my mac connecting @ 802.11g speed. I also use airtunes.
I am looking at getting a new mac and a time capsule. My intention is to set up a new network with the time capsule as the main base connected to the modem. I only intend to use the backup facility with the new mac.
1.) Can I add the "old" airport express as a client to this network?
2.) If the answer is yes, then clearly the network will have to allow "g" and "n" devices to connect. will doing so mean that the new mac cannot take advantage of the greater speed available with the "n" standard? That is to say will the new mac only ever connect at the g speed?
Also is there the option to "zero" the time capsule hard drive?
    Thanks

1.) Can I add the "old" airport express as a client to this network?
Certainly as long as the new Time Capsule is operating in an 802.11g compatible mode. The AirPort Express (AX) will connect wirelessly just like any other client.
2.) If the answer is yes, then clearly the network will have to allow "g" and "n" devices to connect. will doing so mean that the new mac cannot take advantage of the greater speed available with the "n" standard? That is to say will the new mac only ever connect at the g speed?
The 802.11n connection with the new Mac will take a speed hit whenever the old AX or old Mac are connected via 802.11g. The amount of the hit will depend on the amount of 802.11g activity.

  • New Mac =Old Mac

I hope I am not way out of topic, but I think is the only place where I can get a fair answer.
Yesterday I bought my macbook pro from a dealer in Copenhagen. The store online was not working so I asked if there is a new release that I should now about and maybe I should wait until it gets back online. They said they do not think so, I believed they know better and I bought it, just to get home and see the new model was released. Maybe is crazy but I feel pretty bad knowing my brand new one day mac is already an old model. I think the online store was closed especially to prevent things like this, and I would like to know if its any chance to get the new model instead.
Maybe it sounds crazy, but I said its worth asking:)
    Thank you

Thank you guys for the advice, I went down to the store and they offer me either money back since the price dropped down or to wait for the new mac.
After some discussions I decided is better to keep the machine since is already a good one, thinking the new ones are not reviewed and tested so issues can appear.
Well, unluckily for me now I have a dead pixel on my screen, I am going from angry to sad and from sad to irritated and so on
Just hope the will change it tomorrow, I have to go again there and hope for a change, I really cannot accept the dead pixel thing... is very annoying.

  • How do I fix a New Mac/Old iPhone WiFi conflict?

New Mac and Old iPhone wifi conflicts.
So just got the new mac. started it up, did all the auto-set up stuff, got my iPhone 4S connected and all my stuff iClouded onto the new mac, but all of a sudden, my partner's work iPhone is blocked from accessing the household wifi. The apps are there, one can click on them but then they are unopenable. His phone is an iPhone 4.
I really don't want to delete my iCloud and to turn it off, I have to delete it off my new mac.
Help! Does anyone have a solution or idea?

  • New Mac Old Iphone

Ok here it is - I have a new mac and have set up home sharing. Have downloaded new apps for iphone on new comp but when I go to import them to my iphone it says that all other apps will be wiped when I do! I am sure that I have set everything up properly. Anyone any ideas? Thanks.

You need to transfer your iTunes library from your PC to your Mac along with all other important data from your PC that you will need or want to access on your Mac such as photos, documents, etc., etc.
If at iTunes preferences below the Advanced tab on your PC you have "copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library" selected, you can copy the iTunes named folder located in your Music folder, which is located in your Documents folder on a PC. With iTunes quit on your Mac, place the copy of the iTunes named folder from your PC in your Music folder on your Mac. You will also need to authorize your Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so.
If you purchased your Mac at an Apple store, the Apple store will help you transferring the data from your PC that you will need or want to access on your Mac.

  • New Mac, old Virtual PC, transfer XP with Parallels?

Hi folks, I'm planning on getting an new Intel Mac and using the transfer option to upgrade from my G5 to get my identity on the new system. (What's that called anyway?) Here's the situation. I have Virtual PC and Windows XP on the current system. I don't want the virtual PC disk to transfer, or if it does, I want to delete it. I was told that if you install Parallels, it has an import option to allow you to transfer the old XP over. I assume you can do that with an ethernet connection to the old system?
Just need help in figuring out the steps...
    thanks
    Jeff

I assume you can do that with an ethernet connection to the old system?
As long as the virtual image is seen by the Parallels converter it probably doesn't matter how you do it.

Probably want to then post on the Parallels forums:

  • External drive not recognized by new mac, old still recognizes it

I have a portable external 1tb hdd. I just bought a new macbook pro and the old macbook pro currently recognizes the drive where the new one does not. Disk Utility shows no external drive connected. thoughts on why the new one won't connect with it?

I contacted Apple technical support. They had me run the Disk Utility to repair the external hard disk (no problems found) and then zap the PRAM, which is supposed to clear the power path to the firewire port (or something like that). After that I tried doing a backup, and it went to completion without losing contact with the external disk. I don’t know if the problem is permanently fixed, but progress is being made.

  • New mac, Old IPod, uknown error (-54)

    Hey guys,
I bought a macbook the other day and i've seemed to successfully transfer all my music files from my old PC to the mac and now I'm trying to sync my IPod to itunes but after about 930 songs transfer an "unknown error (-54) occurs" and the transferring stops.
I tried restoring the IPod but it didn't work. The same problem occurs.
    Any suggestions?

Just wanted to say that I solved my error -54 problem -- thanks to the user who suggested it was corrupted files.
I decided to sync my library in chunks, alphabetically, and then I looked a little bit more closely at the files surrounding the spot where the error message came up and transfer stopped. I found a "locked" file ("Get info" > the check box for "lock" was selected). After unchecking the box, the files transferred with no problem (I had two locked files within my 4100).
Hope that's helpful to anyone else with an error -54 message!

  • New Mac-old photoshop

Yesterday I bought a new iMac and downloaded my Photoshop CS3 from my CD/DVD and when I brought it up the first time and tried to register it, it said that I needed to download java 6 something or another which I did. Now it says I need to enable java in my browser which I have but it still cannot detect it. Whats to do??? Thank U

Please be specific about the terminology...  Are you trying to activate it or register it?  The former is necessary, but the latter is a good idea and not strictly necessary to be able to use the product.
Please be more descriptive about exactly what you're trying to do that's failing.

  • I have used Adobe Photoshop for some time and want to continue with it. Would I be wise to uninstall iphoto before installing adobe on my new Mac?

I have loaded about 100 pictures into iPhoto on my new Mac (old PC user) but now am certain that I want to continue with Adobe Photoshop which I have used for quite some time. Should I uninstall iPhoto completely as well as removing the IPhoto Library? Please tell me how best to proceed so as to avoid conflicts.
    Thanks,
    Jerry

I currently have Elements 9, but as I said I am a complete novice on the Mac.
When I bought the Mac, I had all of my photos already on an external hd for securitiy purposes, and have since moved them onto the Mac hard drive. I have not yet imported them into iPhoto, although, as I mentioned above I have loaded some pix into iPhoto from a camera just to see how it works. Also I have not yet installed Elements 9 on the Mac.
If I use IPhoto as the program to upload from the camera, do the photos go directly into iPhoto Library?
Does the library function the same as my storing them in My Pictures/My Documents, etc on a pc? Can I move pictures about within the iPhoto Library?
What is the advantage of using both programs simultaneously? If, as TeenTitan mentions above, I could put iPhoto back into the applications folder and not use it at all, and then use Elements 9 as the total package, what features, etc., would I lose?
If I choose to move iPhoto into the app folder, is it a simple matter or dragging it back? If not, how should I do it?
Thanks for your patience. I just want to get off to a clean start with my pictures.

  • New mac 5 days old daughter accessed a movie website and now keep being redirected to this site. Have erased her as user and tried to restore factory settings. Now computer running Internet recovery and I am lost. Please help

New Mac only 5 days old. Daughter accessed a movie website and now popups keep appearing and unable to access any other Internet sites without being redirected. Have deleted her as a user and then tried to restore to factory settings. I did something wrong and it is now doing an Internet recovery. Help I am completly lost and don't know what I am doing.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

Change your settings in Sharing preferences, for one, and remove the server out of the Finder's sidebar. Obviously, this is the result of transfering all your other computer's preferences to your new computer.

  • I lost my home folder all my settings are gone. like i have a new Mac.

I was cleaning up the icons on the left side of the screen under the bar. My Rheta/Home icon was not there, nor was the Desktop, even the Computer icon was gone. In moving Pictures, Movies, Documents, Desktop and Rheta/Home back in the order I thought they should be I found Iphoto6 in the column and thought...this is an alias not needed here. Rather to access my Pictures I should choose the Pictures Icon. I had moved it also.
I had recently started dragging image files after importing and burning DVD backups of my SLR camera imports. Once files were off camera media and into computer and burned. I had read to drag them to External Drive and then delete from my primary startup drive. The reason. I have only 14 GB left on hard drive and need to download Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 before April 30.
I suddenly was presented with a welcome screen to IPHOTO 6 and would I like to watch Quictime educational material...like I had a new upgrade of IPHOTO.
Then I noted I had no images in my IPHOTO library.Great. I went to Rheta/Home and a whole new desktop is there with large Icons, none of my settings, and no email...wants me to set up like I bought a new computer. The only thing left is Safari works and has my Bookmarks. My address book is gone. I guess I could say like another person just wrote...Help I have a new computer..where did my home folder go and how do I get back to my settings? i am very much confused, frustrated/ my last experience bringing a consultant here because my hard drive is full cost $300. Only thing accomplished is he set me up on a new external hard drive with Super Duper. But i have had a messed up system of lost IPHOTO library and all my original files I kept in a file under Pictures in same heirachy as Music, Pictures, i had a folder called Pictures_notIPHOTO. This folder is my whole original and edited Photoshop files. Most of which I had dragged to my partitioned external drive as they were older and I needed space. But alas, all the dragging ended up in me inadvertently dragging the IPHOTO library there and then deleting the Trash as anything in the trash added to my full hard drive. I had only 2 GB at one point and warnings from Apple to delete files, etc.
So I have one external with .Mac Backup which I stopped using after the consultant and I can't get it to mount. It is a LaCie 160. I read others lost their LaCies after upgrading Tiger to 4.9.
Today...after my long explanation....How do I get my own settings back instead of this blank desktop? Please I know this is a lot of information. But the biggest deal is losing my desktop or Home folder settings I guess.Thanksing anyone in advance. I cannot afford another wasted $300. I could buy a new mac. I hope switching isn't result in having to buy a new computer because tech suport is so expensive. I have horror stories about Apple store help/genius bar non help/ Apple Care it is online dude.PS my G5 is four years old. I just successfully added a second 500 GB internal drive and got it initialized and ready to use for either more backup or file storeage off my primary. It is not yet partitioned.
