New Mac on the way - Best method of moving data and apps?

Is the Mac Migration Assistant the best way to move over my data and applications from my old 13" MBP to my new 15" MBP? Or is it best to reinstall my apps manually?
Thanks in advance.

Use the Migration Assistant. Their are specific files not in the application folder that contain preferences and the like. The Migration Assistant will move over those preferences as well as the applications themselves. Plus it takes WAY less time.

  • New Mac on the way - Time Machine questions

    Hi there,
My new Mac is now on its way from Apple and I just have a couple of questions regarding Time Machine:
    1. My new Mac is a MacBook Pro with retina display which is going to replace an early 2006 Intel iMac running Snow Leopard. I was hoping to use my latest Time Machine backup external hard disk to transfer the data using Setup Assistant as the USB port is the only common connection between the two Macs (other than WiFi which I suspect will be a bit slow when used with Setup Assistant). Will Time Machine use the lastest incremental backup to populate the new Mac, or will it only look to the last full backup (I am only looking to import my user settings, iTunes music and iPhotos)?
    2. Going forward, I'm trying to move to a more wireless setup. Previously my iMac used Time Machine on an external USB disk drive, however, I now want to use something like the Western Digital My Book Live connected to my wireless router via ethernet. From searching on the web, it seems this can be a bit hit and miss with both data transfer speed and reliability. I was therefore wondering if any of you guys have had any experience with using an external ethernet hard drive via a wireless router for use with Time Machine, and if so, whether you are able to recommend a particular model. My wireless router is a D-Link DSL-2740R which is ADSL2/2+ and 802.11n compatible.
    3. If I do go down the route of the external ethernet hard drive, would it be best to purchase the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet cable for the initial backup, as I suspect the first full backup would take a while over WiFi.
    4. If there are issues with using a network drive, I guess the only other option is to use a Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 drive and then manually force Time Machine to back up when I am at home and can connect the drive (which could mean a while between backups). Unless anyone can offer any other solutions.
Many thanks for any help you can offer.
    Steve

I have lost my harddrive which contains a vast amount of music I've been collecting for many years. I just purchased a new Mac, but I've reached my activation limit. And I only have access to 2 of the 5 activated computers. My old music can still be played on my iPod, but I need to set up another account on my new Mac. What will happen to my music if I were to deactivate all of activated computers?

Authorization determines to which computers material requiring authorization can be transferrred using the itunes interface.  If you want to re-download past purchases then a computer need to be authorized.
As for transferring music from the iPod, your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

Hello alltogether! I use PSE 7 on my PC with windows XP and now want to change to a new Mac with the newest version PSE . Is it possible to move all my albums and tags to that new version? Thank you very much for your kind answers! Candyapple111

    1. Install PSE 11 in windows, upgrade your catalog, then make a full backup  to a removable drive, like a usb drive, using the organizer's back up command. If you buy the boxed version you get discs for both platforms.
    2. Install PSE on the mac.
    3. Restore the backup to the mac. Point the restore to the .tly file in the folder, not the enclosing folder.

What is "Photoshop Elements Premier 12"? Do you mean Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements? Were your files copied over from a previous mac that had PSE installed on it?

The photos are on the ipod.  Photo sync will erase them.  I need a way to extract them from the ipod, or to.extract them from the ipod backup that is who knows where on my PC.
I've been searching for an app to do that with no luck.  They all seem to want a newer OS than is on my ipod yet I have the most recent update installed.

Does every backup require lots of indexing?  If so, the index may be damaged.
Try Repairing the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, see the pink box in #D2 of the same link.

  • Best Method for Saving Data to File?

    Hi,
We're using labVIEW 2009 to acquire data from our instrument.  In the past we have used the "write to labview measurement file" express configuration tool to save data to a file. However we had some issues with our VI - occasionally we would lose data or column headers somewhat erratically and were never able to sort out the problem. We would like to rewrite our VI with the best possible solution.
Here's a summary of what we would like to do:
Save 30 variables at a rate of roughly 1 Hz. We would like one set of column headers per file so that the data can be easily imported into labVIEW with the variable names intact. We will be collecting data continuously, so we would like to divide the data into 3-4 files per day. Ideally, the program to start new files at the same times from day to day and the filename could be configured to include the date and time/file number.
I am hoping that users can provide a little feedback about methods that were most successful and reliable. From what I have read there are a few different ways to do this (express VI, tdms, "write to text file"). Any thoughts or relevant examples would be quite useful for us!
    Thanks for your help!

Is it correct to say that in your method, the indexing results in building up the data into one large array of data before saving it to the file with the column headers and filenames appended?  If we are writing data at 1Hz for 6 hours of time, will we run into an issue being able to store all the data?
Yes the indexing will build up one large array.  If this is a problem due to array size and memory, you will have to write more often.  You can write every second, that should not be a problem.  You should still write the column names to the file first, and have the append input set to False (or nothing wired in since the default is false).  This will create a new file with the headers only.  Then the data write has a True wired in so that the append takes place.  If running for 6 hours and gathering data once per second, your array will contain 36,006 rows of data.  I'm not sure if that would cause a memory problem or not.
    Meg T wrote:
it also seems difficult to incorporate headers into express VI if you are writing the data continuously as a part of a loop with the "append" option.
If you write the headers before the loop as I have shown, and use append inside the loop, you will not have problems.

I want to give my old iphone 4 to my daughter and need to get all her info from her old iphone 3 onto a new computer.  The PC she synced with is dead and she does not want to loose all her contacts and music. How can I do this?

To effectively transfer ownership of the iPhone requires that it be "restored" as a new device.
...  The PC she synced with is dead
The iPhone is not a backup device. Your computer backs up the iPhone, not the other way around. What you use to back up your computer is up to you - Macs use Time Machine. I assume PCs use something similar.
If her PC backup is dead you will have difficulty extracting content from the iPhone since it is not designed to work that way.
All her Apple purchases can easily be transferred to another iPhone. However, her contacts will be gone, as will any music or other contact obtained from sources other than Apple.
There are a number of third party utilities that claim to be able to extract content from an iPhone. See wjosten's procedure here:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got OS X Mavericks installed (the Keynote, Pages and Numbers versions available in the Mac App Store are only compatible with OS X Mavericks).
You have got a Late 2013 MacBook Pro, which uses a special OS X Mavericks version that is not available in the Mac App Store. This is the reason why the Mac App Store is not compatible with OS X Mavericks even if you are using it. This will be fixed in OS X 10.9.1, when your Mac uses the same Mavericks version as all other Macs.
Until then, you can reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
