New Mac Pro 2.8 vs. Refurbished Mac Pro 3.0?

I'm trying to decide between a new Mac Pro 2.8 and a refurbished Mac Pro 3.0. The refurbished 3.0 is roughly $375 less. I'll be using this for a graphic design business, so we'll be routinely using CS3. Help me decide.

I was faced with the same question at the end of 2007. I had even picked up a new Mac Pro 2.66 quad core, but did not open it. I decided to return it, and fortunately the next day, the 2008 Mac Pros came along. I went with the 8 core 2.8. The 3.0 from 2006/2007 is already dated, and there is no way you will make it faster without spending a ton of money. The refurb unit you are looking at is 2 years old in design. It first came out in August 2006. The expansion slots are all PCIe 1.1 if I recall. With the newer machines they have 2 slots that are PCIe 2.0.
You also have to factor in the upgraded graphics card. Barefeats.com did a little comparison of the video cards, and the 2600 XT fared very well against the 1900XT that is what most folks upgraded to with the 2006 3.0 GHz Mac Pro. The 1900 xt is not a bad car, however, there is no guarantee that you will ever be able to put newer cards in that older machine. There is conjecture that the 8800 GT card that was released for the Early 2008 Mac Pros may work in the older units, but that is not a done deal yet. The 2600 XT does fairly well with Motion.
The 3.0 also ships with 1 GB of RAM while the 2.8 8 core ships standard with 2 GB of RAM. Granted, you will want additional RAM, but you still come out ahead with the early 2008 8 core unit. You do not need to overspend on RAM. Otherworld Computing sells great RAM. I have Apple RAM, OWC RAM, and the Techworks RAM (sold by OWC) in my Mac Pro. I cannot tell the difference and I have had no crashes. 4 GB of RAM is about 219 bucks at OWC.
As for any video or graphics work that you may want to do, the 8 core unit is much more robust for crunching the compression. Compressor can take advantage of the multiple cores. Barefeats.com also did some benchmarking of the 2.8 octo core and the 3.0 octo core unit from 2007. The early 2008 unit was just about even because of the improved L2 Cache and the improved front side bus speed. Overall, the early 2008 units are great performers. The 2.8 quad core should be just about even with the 3.0 quad core in terms of speed. The 2.8 octo core is faster yet, and is about even with the older 3.0 octo core MP. The reason for this is that the 2008 Mac Pros have a faster front side bus and a bigger L2 cache.
I think you are wasting your money going with a discontinued unit, that has questionable upgradeability paths in regards to video cards, fewer cores, a slower bus speed, less RAM, slower RAM, and less L2 Cache memory. As an aside, the early 2008 Mac Pro features PCIe 2.0 slots, whereas the 2006 Mac Pro does not.
As for adding a second DVD drive, you can get the drives for about 30 dollars. They are not expensive like they used to be.
In regards to all of the stuff floating around about Leopard, I do a lot of graphics, including Final Cut Studio 1, and Creative Suite 3. I have had few issues. With the latest Leopard upgrade, and the recent updates with the other programs, Leopard runs every bit as good as Tiger did. The only recurring theme I have seen that has not been resolved with the newer systems and hardware has been the drivers for audio gear and recording. Otherwise, the new machines are very stable and speedy.
Other folks have went the refurb way and have been very happy. Some folks went with the newer machine, and they are happy. Only you can decide what makes the deal the best for you. Do not base everything on the higher priced Crucial RAM. Oh, one other thing that you get with the early 2008 Mac Pro is a nifty aluminum keyboard. After using this keyboard you will not want to use anything else.
Good luck with your decision. I know it is difficult.

  • Should I buy the 2013 13" macbook pro or 2012 15"(refurbished) macbook pro

Hey guys, so basically to start off, I've never bought a mac before however i have an iphone 5, ipad 3rd gen, and ipod nano 3rd gen. So im now looking for a new laptop as my windows desktop is pretty old and slow. I've been looking at buying either the 2013 13" retina display macbook pro or the 2012 15" refurbished macbook pro. Im at university studying civil engineering, so im mainly going to be using it for creating documents and using some subject specific programmes as well as the normal stuff such as social networking, photos, watching movies etc. The reason I am looking at getting the mid-2012 refurbished 15" is because of the larger screen, dvd drive, and i7 processor, and easier cababilities of upgrading and repairing, however ive also heard that the new mavericks system can slow down the performance of older macs. Obviously the retina display of the 2013 13" would be nice but not exactly necessary for me and also therefore, it feels as though i would be getting more for my money with the 2012 15". The cost of the 13" i5 2013 will be £945.60 (education pricing) and £1,189.00 for the 15" i7 2012 (I wouldnt want to be paying more than that). Any advice would be amazing as im really stuck between choosing these two!! Thanks

  • Refurbished Mac Pros (2007 models)?

On average, about how old are the refurbished Mac Pro's on Apple's web site? Also, for those folks that have purchased refurbished systems, are you happy with your purchase? Cosmetically, was it obvious that what you purchased was refurbished or did it look like a new Mac?

On average, about how old are the refurbished Mac Pro's on Apple's web site?
Most often, you see the previous generation models in the refurb listings, but it depends on which model. iMacs, for example, usually have listings for both the white and aluminum versions. And what's listed solely depends on what Apple has processed through on customer returns, warranty replacements, etc. It's a safe bet that you won't see systems that are more than a year old, though.

I'm pleased with mine. Apart from the packaging, it looked like a new machine. There may have been a few smudges on the aluminum, but I'll overlook that as part of the deal.

  • Refurbished mac book pro

I want to buy the refurbished mac book pro 13" i7
is refurbished bad or does apple make sure they are good to go?

when apple sells refurbished macbooks - they test it and wipe it out and sell it back like it's brand new.
when someone buys a macbook  and returns them - apple doesn't sell them as new - they repack them after testing then sell them as refurbished macbooks.  it can also be a display model that they can only sell as refurbished.
it's safe to buy them - warranty is the same as buying a new one.

  • Refurbished Mac Pro?

Hi, I've been seriously considering a refurbished Mac Pro and was just after a general opinion from others who have bought one as to their experience, were you happy with the condition of the unit etc?

I would like to start by saying thank you to "The hatter" for the suggestion the other day to look at the Refurbished Mac's, which I did and I am told that I should have my new refurbished Mac Pro, in about a weeks time. I saved a bundle of money, ( which I will now put towards some ram [Techworks] and a external backup[OWC]) it also comes with Tiger loaded and the Leopard CD.
If I may ask a somewhat off topic question, it appears that a number of you are suggesting that one should stay with Tiger for the time being, and let "Leo get its spots fixed".
Pardon my ignorance here but can I load Leo on a separate new hard drive, (is this a good way of doing the upgrade, in any case that way I still have Tiger on its own drive, in case anything goes wrong with Leo) just to see how things work on my system at this time.
I have checked and found that my printers don't have the drivers yet for Leo, plus some of the utilities that I am going to use haven't been upgraded for Leo either.

  • ALSO Just purchased a refurbished Mac Pro Quad 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon!

Hi All, I'm new to this forum but having a severe case of Extreme Buyer's Remorse / Best Bang For The Buck Syndrome...Yesterday I also purchased a Refurbished Mac Pro Quad 3.0GHz, 2GB, ATI 1900 from the Apple Store for $2299. Seemingly, the difference between the one I bought and Barry is that mine came with a second Superdrive. For the same price, I thought why not?
So, here's the nature of my anxiety: I'm not totally conversant in Mac Pro-speak and am having a hard time understanding exactly what I purchased, when it was originally manufactured, etc.. The receipt I was provided indicated I bought a machine with 2 dual-core processors along with a model number that apparently does not exist in any universe other than the Apple Store, FB052LLA.
I've made a number of phone calls today to the Apple Store and they said without the serial number (which I won't have until I receive the unit) they cannot tell me exactly what the base unit was before the config was made. I very much want to know:
-Is this a 5100 series Quad Core or 5300 Series Eight Core or something else?
-When was it likely originally released?
-Most importantly, was the $2299 money well spent when MacMall is now offering a Quad-Core 2.8Ghz, 2GB, ATI 2600 for $2214?
My anxiety level rose just typing all this out, so thanks in advance!!
    Larry

Apple Mac Pro Quad Xeon 3GHz Workstation, model no. MA052LL/A, with two SuperDrives and ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB video for $2,299 (was $3,349). This is your model with the "MA" in the Model No. replaced with an "FB". Presumable the FB = Refurbished.
I believe this model was released August 2006 and contained Intel Xeon 5100 series ("Woodcrest") processors. It was discontinued Jan 2008.
The Machine ID should be MacPro1,1
    Ref http://www.apple-history.com/
"Announced at WWDC in August 2006, the Mac Pro completed Apple's transition to Intel processors, replacing the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) as Apple's professional desktop Mac. The Mac Pro was based on two 64-bit, dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 "Woodcrest" processors, which included a 128-bit Vector Engine. The Mac Pro's case resembled its PowerMac predecessor's--with the exception of a second optical drive bay--but the interior of the case was completely redesigned. The Xeon processors required less heat-dissapation than G5 processors, allowing a smaller cooling system. The Mac Pro had four easily accessible hard drive bays (for a BTO maximum of 2 TB of storage) and easy access to its 8 RAM slots, which allowed for a Maximum of 16 GB of RAM.
With the Mac Pro, Apple decided to do something different in terms of configuration. Since the majority of Apple's professional customers tended to heavily-customize their Macs at purchase time, Apple offered a single, heavily customizable Mac Pro model. In effect, this shifted the decision-making for what configurations to sell to the resellers, leaving Apple with a streamlined manufacturing process. The single model sold for $2,499, and included two 2.66 GHz, dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 processors, 1 GB of RAM, a 250 MB hard disk, a SuperDrive, and an Nvidia GeForce 7300GT graphics card with 256MB of VRAM. BTO options included 2.0 and 3.0 GHz processors, up to 16 GB of RAM, up to 2 TB of storage, a second SuperDrive, a variety of graphics cards, and Airport Express and Bluetooth support."
Your MacPro has 4 cores (2 per processor) and not the Mac Pro (8 core) you mentioned.

  • Apple Certified Refurbished Mac Book Pro RAM

    Hello,
is it possible to buy an Apple Certified Refurbished Mac Book Pro listed with 1GB Ram, with 2GB of RAM?
    Thanks for help,
    lg
    Tina

Sounds like BTO. And ask Apple or look in the MBP forum.
Often times, and no guarantee, the Specials do come with more RAM and could have larger hard drive than what is listed.
Otherwise, might want to just place an order for new and configure yourself, or look at what Crucial, Ramjet etc offer in upgrades which may be easy DIY. There are manuals for all Macs from the "Manuals" link at the top.

I have a MAC Pro from 2011 currently running MAC OS 10.9.5.  This weekend I cloned the MAC HD drive to a new SSD drive for improved performance.  The clone was completed successfully with no errors.  After the clone completed I successfully restarted my system using the SSD as the boot device.  I then successfully tested all of my products, including Photoshop CS6 and all of its plug-ins.  I successfully tested the key features that I frequently use.  Today while attempting to launch Photoshop CS6 a message is being displayed indicating that a scratch disk cannot be found.  All drives are available on the system via the Finder and Disk Utility.  I can access all drives including the old MAC HD which is no longer the boot device.  I've even attempted to launch Photoshop from the old device yet the same error persist.  Is there a way to review/edit/change Photoshop preferences if Photoshop doesn't launch?  I've even restarted my system several times to see if that would resolve the issues.  Does anyone have any recommendations for this issue?  Have you previously address this issue?
    Thank you Gregg Williams

Can I load my current software on to a refurbished mac book pro

When you get the MBP, the first time you turn it on, the Setup Assistant will offer to migrate your data from an old computer to the new one. Take advantage of the offer, and elect to migrate your applications too. If your MS Office apps won't open after being moved over, it will likely be because Microsoft's registration and activation routines have locked the software to the first computer it was installed on. You'll need to consult Microsoft for advice on freeing it up for use on the new computer, which will probably entail deactivationg it on the old one first.

Im typing it in the QT control panel on my Windows XP workstation exactly as it appears on my MBP. Am I required to purchase a second license just to use it on a PC ?

thanks for your input. I did some hunting around and eventually discovered that one can buy a QTP for Windows license on the Apple Store $29.99 at the time of this writing. Its clear now that the license code for QTP/Mac will not work for QTP/Win or vice versa. Who woulda thunk it ?

  • I have bought a new Iphone 4S and also own a Mac pro, also IPad.        I did not install find my phone on the IPad, my IPad has either been misplaced (have tore the house up looking for it) or it has been stolen is there any way I can find where it is at

I resently purchased the New IPhone 4S, and I have a mac Pro, plus a IPad.  I have misplaced my IPad or it has been stolen is there any way by using Find My phone it can be located Thanks Look for My IPad

Unless you set up MobileMe / Find My iPad on it before it was lost/stolen, then no, there isn't any way to locate it. If you did set up MobileMe on it then you could try locating it either via me.com on a computer or Find My iPhone / Find My iPad on a another device - but that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or MobileMe disabled on it.
If you think that it was stolen then you should report it to the police. As a safety precaution you should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

I have a Seagate eSata External Drive which comes with an eSATA PCI card.
The http://www.cwol.com/serial-ata/esata-pci-express-1-ext-1-int.htm site recommends this card: eSATA PCI Express Card - 1 eSATA II and 1 Internal SATA II Port, but it doesn't specify whether it works on a Mac Pro - any suggestions?

    Hi
I think the Radeon 9800 is certainly the most powerful graphics card you could buy for your G4 and would do everything you need.
Just be aware there are at least 3 different Mac versions though.
There's a G5 version, the Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Edition, which is 8X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
There's an older Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 128MB VRAM.
Finally there's a newer Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition, which is 2X/4X AGP and has 256MB VRAM.
So long as you get one of the 2X/4X AGP versions, either with 128MB or 256MB VRAM, it should work fine.
It's perhaps also worthwhile mentioning they do require a separate internal power connection, although this can be taken from a hard drive molex power connector. Also they have a cooling fan which can be noisy.
    I hope this helps.
